    In January 1916 a party of journalists from seven Irish newspapers visited Irish regiments serving on the western front. Such a privilege came at a price. Organised by the department of recruiting for Ireland, it was made clear to the journalists that this embedded tour had an agenda: they were ‘to set down what they saw there for the benefit of recruiting in Ireland’. This article examines the extent to which the three national titles included on the tour accepted this role of communicating and legitimising recruitment policy. It sheds light on the involvement of two national newspaper editors in shaping recruitment policy in Ireland, illustrates how each of the three national titles reported the tour, and examines the effects such reportage had on recruiting in Ireland.

    In physics, the Doppler effect describes how the properties of waves - as in sound waves - change in frequency as an observer, or listener, moves in relation to their source. This study of the modalities of reporting and commenting on the events of 1916 in Dublin across both the Unionist and Nationalist newspapers in what was to become Northern Ireland after 1922 offers new perspectives on the way in which both physical distance and embedded political positions will influence the selection and the presentation of news. While it demonstrates – as might have been expected - that intra-communitarian and sectarian tensions are echoed in the reports concerned, it also reveals sometimes unexpected distortions and adds several layers of complexity to the study of both Unionist and Nationalist media in this period. It also indicates the weakness of the traditional Orange/Green dichotomy as an explanatory paradigm of the complexity of Northern Ireland at this time. The ways in which 1916 in Dublin is reported in Northern Ireland is, in this sense, therefore also a finely-tuned instrument for analysing the vagaries of the relationships there between Nationalists and Unionists, and within Nationalism, on the eve of one of the most profound shifts in Irish political history. Finally, it is a unique guide to how not only journalists but public figures, often with a confidence that was to be belied by subsequent events, interpreted or mis-interpreted the Rising and its potential consequences. It is worth remembering, especially by historians, that judging public figures by the effects of their actions sometimes ignores a possibly vital factor: these public figures – unlike the historians who comment on them - were not in a position to know what happened next. This is why the journalistic evidence of their mind-sets, properly understood, can and indeed should form a vital part of the interpretative framework.

    Cumann na mBan was formally inaugurated in April 1914. Discussion on an informal level about starting such an organisation had been taking place from November 1913. The name Cumann na mBan was translated at this time in the English language as The Irishwomen’s Council. An investigation of the Primary sources available on Cumann na mBan indicates that the histories previously written do not present a balanced picture of this organisation between the years' 1913-1926. The word balance is used here in the sense that previous histories of the organisation tend to be of unsubtle consensus. The sub title of this work is Redressing the Balance. This subtitle is the kernel of the findings of this thesis. The story of Cumann na mBan is complex. It required a comprehensive reading of available Primary source material and a study of the Secondary sources to read what has been previously written about the organisation.. Cumann na mBan like Sinn Fein, the Irish Volunteers and the IRA was an integral part of the Nationalist Republican movement from 1913 to 1926. The general history books tend to treat Cumann na mBan as a minor aspect of the activities during this period. Feminist history has isolated the story of Cumann na mBan from the events of their time. It has contributed to marginalising the history of this Nationalist Republican organisation. This has created in historic writing a simpilistic imbalance in the way Cumann na mBan is perceived. The women are viewed as either victims or icons. They were neither. The history of the rank and file of Cumann na mBan has not been written. Somewhere between these two types of study there is a way of redressing this imbalance. A reassessment of Cumann na mBan can be undertaken. This involves a through study of the Primary and Secondary Source material. This thesis will show precisely the results of the aforementioned method of study on this issue.

    The history of the Irish language in nineteenth-century Australia, and of its use among Irish immigrants, is not very clear. On the one hand, Patrick O’Farrell has maintained that the Irish were overwhelmingly anglophone on arrival or else assimilated linguistically with great rapidity; on the other hand, Dympna Lonergan has maintained that Irish did survive as a spoken language for some time. It is difficult to decide between these two positions. Historians rely principally on written documentation for evidence of past behaviour, but it is not necessarily a reliable guide to spoken language. peer-reviewed

    This article explores the mapping problem in parameter mapping sonification: the problem of how to map data to sound in a way that conveys meaning to the listener. We contend that this problem can be addressed by considering the implied conceptual framing of data?to?sound mapping strategies with a particular focus on how such frameworks may be informed by embodied cognition research and theories of conceptual metaphor. To this end, we discuss two examples of data-driven musical pieces which are informed by models from embodied cognition, followed by a more detailed case study of a sonic information design mapping strategy for a large-scale Internet of Things (IoT) network.

    The radical polychromy of the Museum Building at Trinity College Dublin did not emerge Minerva-like from the brow of Benajmin Woodward, but rather from an imbrication of architecture, geology and engineering (fig. 2.1). While much is known about developments within these disciplines in the early Victorian period, relatively little is known of their relationship. How did geology and engineering come to influence architectural design and production? Why was it that structural columns of polished, polychrome, local limestone first appeared in architecture in Dublin in the 1850s? What was the impact in Ireland of this avant-garde polychromy? Louise Caulfield has shown the wealth of Ireland?s coloured limestone and its burgeoning exploitation in the period: this essay seeks to discover connective tissue between contemporary science, industry, politics and aesthetics.

    With the increasing scale of online cultural heritage collections, the e?orts of manually adding annotations to their contents become a challenging and costly endeavour. Entity Linking is a process used to automatically apply such annotations to a text based collection, where the quality and coverage of the linking process is highly dependent on the knowledge base that informs it. In this paper, we present our ongoing e?orts to annotate a corpus of 17 th century Irish witness statements using Entity Linking methods that utilise Semantic Web techniques. We discuss problems faced in this process and attempts to remedy them.

    The growing interest in the impact assessment of cultural heritage has generated a diversity of approaches often focusing mainly on the economic dimension. However, if we consider the cultural heritage as a common and relational good, any activity aimed at promoting its educational, social and economic values needs to produce benefi ts for the community in which the good is located. Therefore, we must necessarily resort to other concepts and tools for measuring the impact of valorisation activities of cultural heritage on community well-being. We must also consider the value for community members. This article illustrates a qualitative research carried out through a case study with the direct involvement of local stakeholders (multi-stakeholder approach). This introductory study is part of a wider research program that the author is currently developing. In accordance with the Quality of Life studies, the main result of the research is the defi nition of elements useful to the impact assessment produced by the valorisation of cultural heritage, in terms of well-being of local communities. Il crescente interesse nella valutazione di impatto del patrimonio culturale ha generato una diversità di approcci, spesso incentrati sulla dimensione economica. Se però si considera il patrimonio culturale come bene comune e relazionale, qualsiasi attività volta a promuovere il suo valore educativo, sociale ed economico deve essere in grado di produrre benefi ci per la comunità in cui il bene si trova. È necessario, dunque, ricorrere a concetti e strumenti in grado di misurare l’impatto delle attività di valorizzazione del patrimonio sul benessere della comunità locale, considerando anche il valore attribuitogli dalla stessa. Questo articolo illustra una ricerca qualitativa realizzata attraverso un caso di studio con il coinvolgimento diretto degli attori locali (approccio multi-stakeholder). Si tratta di uno studio introduttivo ad un percorso di ricerca più ampio e articolato che l’autrice sta sviluppando.     In January 1916 a party of journalists from seven Irish newspapers visited Irish regiments serving on the western front. Such a privilege came at a price. Organised by the department of recruiting for Ireland, it was made clear to the journalists that this embedded tour had an agenda: they were ‘to set down what they saw there for the benefit of recruiting in Ireland’. This article examines the extent to which the three national titles included on the tour accepted this role of communicating and legitimising recruitment policy. It sheds light on the involvement of two national newspaper editors in shaping recruitment policy in Ireland, illustrates how each of the three national titles reported the tour, and examines the effects such reportage had on recruiting in Ireland.

    In physics, the Doppler effect describes how the properties of waves - as in sound waves - change in frequency as an observer, or listener, moves in relation to their source. This study of the modalities of reporting and commenting on the events of 1916 in Dublin across both the Unionist and Nationalist newspapers in what was to become Northern Ireland after 1922 offers new perspectives on the way in which both physical distance and embedded political positions will influence the selection and the presentation of news. While it demonstrates – as might have been expected - that intra-communitarian and sectarian tensions are echoed in the reports concerned, it also reveals sometimes unexpected distortions and adds several layers of complexity to the study of both Unionist and Nationalist media in this period. It also indicates the weakness of the traditional Orange/Green dichotomy as an explanatory paradigm of the complexity of Northern Ireland at this time. The ways in which 1916 in Dublin is reported in Northern Ireland is, in this sense, therefore also a finely-tuned instrument for analysing the vagaries of the relationships there between Nationalists and Unionists, and within Nationalism, on the eve of one of the most profound shifts in Irish political history. Finally, it is a unique guide to how not only journalists but public figures, often with a confidence that was to be belied by subsequent events, interpreted or mis-interpreted the Rising and its potential consequences. It is worth remembering, especially by historians, that judging public figures by the effects of their actions sometimes ignores a possibly vital factor: these public figures – unlike the historians who comment on them - were not in a position to know what happened next. This is why the journalistic evidence of their mind-sets, properly understood, can and indeed should form a vital part of the interpretative framework.

    Cumann na mBan was formally inaugurated in April 1914. Discussion on an informal level about starting such an organisation had been taking place from November 1913. The name Cumann na mBan was translated at this time in the English language as The Irishwomen’s Council. An investigation of the Primary sources available on Cumann na mBan indicates that the histories previously written do not present a balanced picture of this organisation between the years' 1913-1926. The word balance is used here in the sense that previous histories of the organisation tend to be of unsubtle consensus. The sub title of this work is Redressing the Balance. This subtitle is the kernel of the findings of this thesis. The story of Cumann na mBan is complex. It required a comprehensive reading of available Primary source material and a study of the Secondary sources to read what has been previously written about the organisation.. Cumann na mBan like Sinn Fein, the Irish Volunteers and the IRA was an integral part of the Nationalist Republican movement from 1913 to 1926. The general history books tend to treat Cumann na mBan as a minor aspect of the activities during this period. Feminist history has isolated the story of Cumann na mBan from the events of their time. It has contributed to marginalising the history of this Nationalist Republican organisation. This has created in historic writing a simpilistic imbalance in the way Cumann na mBan is perceived. The women are viewed as either victims or icons. They were neither. The history of the rank and file of Cumann na mBan has not been written. Somewhere between these two types of study there is a way of redressing this imbalance. A reassessment of Cumann na mBan can be undertaken. This involves a through study of the Primary and Secondary Source material. This thesis will show precisely the results of the aforementioned method of study on this issue.

    The history of the Irish language in nineteenth-century Australia, and of its use among Irish immigrants, is not very clear. On the one hand, Patrick O’Farrell has maintained that the Irish were overwhelmingly anglophone on arrival or else assimilated linguistically with great rapidity; on the other hand, Dympna Lonergan has maintained that Irish did survive as a spoken language for some time. It is difficult to decide between these two positions. Historians rely principally on written documentation for evidence of past behaviour, but it is not necessarily a reliable guide to spoken language. peer-reviewed

    This article explores the mapping problem in parameter mapping sonification: the problem of how to map data to sound in a way that conveys meaning to the listener. We contend that this problem can be addressed by considering the implied conceptual framing of data?to?sound mapping strategies with a particular focus on how such frameworks may be informed by embodied cognition research and theories of conceptual metaphor. To this end, we discuss two examples of data-driven musical pieces which are informed by models from embodied cognition, followed by a more detailed case study of a sonic information design mapping strategy for a large-scale Internet of Things (IoT) network.

    The radical polychromy of the Museum Building at Trinity College Dublin did not emerge Minerva-like from the brow of Benajmin Woodward, but rather from an imbrication of architecture, geology and engineering (fig. 2.1). While much is known about developments within these disciplines in the early Victorian period, relatively little is known of their relationship. How did geology and engineering come to influence architectural design and production? Why was it that structural columns of polished, polychrome, local limestone first appeared in architecture in Dublin in the 1850s? What was the impact in Ireland of this avant-garde polychromy? Louise Caulfield has shown the wealth of Ireland?s coloured limestone and its burgeoning exploitation in the period: this essay seeks to discover connective tissue between contemporary science, industry, politics and aesthetics.

    With the increasing scale of online cultural heritage collections, the e?orts of manually adding annotations to their contents become a challenging and costly endeavour. Entity Linking is a process used to automatically apply such annotations to a text based collection, where the quality and coverage of the linking process is highly dependent on the knowledge base that informs it. In this paper, we present our ongoing e?orts to annotate a corpus of 17 th century Irish witness statements using Entity Linking methods that utilise Semantic Web techniques. We discuss problems faced in this process and attempts to remedy them.
