The digital text of the 13 books of the "Confessiones" by Augustinus is taken from The Latin Library (http://www.thelatinlibrary.com/august.html). The original text was lemmatized and PoS tagged with the UDPipe tool (using the PROIEL trained model). The output of UDPipe was then checked manually at the CIRCSE Research Centre of the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, Milan, Italy. The linking of the text to the Lemma Bank of the LiLa Knowledge Base was performed at CIRCSE, too.

From the mid-sixteenth century, Italian Protomedico tribunals, Colleges of Physicians or Health Offices (jurisdiction varied from state to state) required ‘charlatans’ to submit their wares for inspection and, upon approval, pay a licence fee in order set up a stage from which to perform and sell them. As far as the medical magistracies were concerned, charlatans – or quacks, empirics, mountebanks, itinerant pedlars, whatever we wish to call them – had a definable identity. They constituted a specific trade or occupation. In this context, the Italian term <i>ciarlatano</i> lost some of its bite, becoming less a term of abuse and more a generic, bureaucratic label, identifying a category of healer. The word had a more precise meaning, fewer figurative connotations than it would acquire in English. More importantly, it was a label, the charlatans used themselves.<br> The licensing regime in place in early modern Italy allows us unparalleled opportunities when it comes to the investigation of suspect but generally tolerated categories like charlatans. It was the ongoing attempt to regulate the activity of charlatans which provides us with the raw material for this Database and for the book associated with it, David Gentilcore’s <i>Medical Charlatanism in Early Modern Italy</i> (Oxford University Press, 2006; ISBN 0199245355)<br>

Abstract: The Aurignacian is the first European technocomplex assigned to Homo sapiens identified across a wide geographic extent. Although archaeologists have identified marked chrono-cultural shifts within the Aurignacian mostly by examining the techno-typological variations of stone tools, unraveling the underlying processes driving these changes remains a significant scientific challenge. Scholars have, for instance, hypothesized that the Campanian Ignimbrite (CI) super-eruption and the climatic deterioration associated with the onset of Heinrich Event 4 had a substantial impact on European foraging groups. The technological shift from the Protoaurignacian to the Early Aurignacian is regarded as an archaeological manifestation of adaptation to changing environments. However, some of the most crucial regions and stratigraphic sequences for testing these scenarios have been overlooked. In this study, we delve into the high-resolution stratigraphic sequence of Grotta di Castelcivita in southern Italy. Here, the Uluzzian is followed by three Aurignacian layers, all sealed by the eruptive units of the CI. Employing a comprehensive range of quantitative methods—encompassing attribute analysis, 3D model analysis, and geometric morphometrics—we demonstrate that the technological features commonly associated with the Early Aurignacian developed well before the deposition of the CI tephra. Our study provides thus the first direct evidence that the volcanic eruption played no role in this cultural process. Furthermore, we show that local paleo-environmental proxies do not correlate with the identified patterns of cultural continuity and discontinuity. Consequently, we propose alternative research paths to explore the role of demography and regional trajectories in the development of the Upper Paleolithic. For ensuring reproducibility, the renv package (v. 1.0.3) was utilized, following the procedures detailed in its vignette. All analyses and visualizations in the paper were conducted using R 4.3.1 on Microsoft Windows 10.0.19045 (64-bit). The Observatory Knowledge Graph (OKG) is a knowledge graph with tweets on inequality in terms of the OBIO ontology (https://w3id.org/okg/obio-ontology/), which integrates social media metadata with various types of linguistic knowledge. The OKG can be used as the backbone of a social media observatory, to facilitate a deeper understanding of social media discourse on inequality. We retrieved tweets and retweets published from the end (30th) of May 2020 to the beginning (1st) of May 2023. In this version of the OKG, we use a sample of 85,247 tweets, published from May 30th to August 27th, 2020. To be compliant with Twitter's policies, we remove usernames and id's, as well as the tweet texts and sentences. We also replace user IRIs with skolem IRIs through skolemization.
