    Network structure is often considered one of the most important features of a network, and various models exist to generate graphs having one of the most studied types of structures, such as blocks/communities or spatial structures. In this article, we introduce a framework for the generation of random graphs with a controlled size -- number of nodes, edges -- and a customizable structure, beyond blocks and spatial ones, based on node-pair rank and a tunable probability function allowing to control the amount of randomness. We introduce a structure zoo -- a collection of original network structures -- and conduct experiments on the small-world properties of networks generated by those structures.     Bias detection in the computer vision field is a necessary task, to achieve fair models. These biases are usually due to undesirable correlations present in the data and learned by the model. Although explainability can be a way to gain insights into model behavior, reviewing explanations is not straightforward. This work proposes a methodology to analyze the model biases without using explainability. By doing so, we reduce the potential noise arising from explainability methods, and we minimize human noise during the analysis of explanations. The proposed methodology combines images of the original distribution with images of potential context biases and analyzes the effect produced in the model’s output. For this work, we first presented and released three new datasets generated by diffusion models. Next, we used the proposed methodology to analyze the context impact on the model’s prediction. Finally, we verified the reliability of the proposed methodology and the consistency of its results. We hope this tool will help practitioners to detect and mitigate potential biases, allowing them to obtain more reliable models.     AbstractNative language identification (NLI) is the task of training (via supervised machine learning) a classifier that guesses the native language of the author of a text. This task has been extensively researched in the last decade, and the performance of NLI systems has steadily improved over the years. We focus on a different facet of the NLI task, i.e. that of analysing the internals of an NLI classifier trained by an explainable machine learning (EML) algorithm, in order to obtain explanations of its classification decisions, with the ultimate goal of gaining insight into which linguistic phenomena ‘give a speaker’s native language away’. We use this perspective in order to tackle both NLI and a (much less researched) companion task, i.e. guessing whether a text has been written by a native or a non-native speaker. Using three datasets of different provenance (two datasets of English learners’ essays and a dataset of social media posts), we investigate which kind of linguistic traits (lexical, morphological, syntactic, and statistical) are most effective for solving our two tasks, namely, are most indicative of a speaker’s L1; our experiments indicate that the most discriminative features are the lexical ones, followed by the morphological, syntactic, and statistical features, in this order. We also present two case studies, one on Italian and one on Spanish learners of English, in which we analyse individual linguistic traits that the classifiers have singled out as most important for spotting these L1s; we show that the traits identified as most discriminative well align with our intuition, i.e. represent typical patterns of language misuse, underuse, or overuse, by speakers of the given L1. Overall, our study shows that the use of EML can be a valuable tool for the scholar who investigates interlanguage facts and language transfer.

    Human facial data hold tremendous potential to address a variety of classification problems, including face recognition, age estimation, gender identification, emotion analysis, and race classification. However, recent privacy regulations, such as the EU General Data Protection Regulation and others, have restricted the ways in which human images may be collected and used for research. As a result, several previously published data sets containing human faces have been removed from the internet due to inadequate data collection methods that failed to meet privacy regulations. Data sets consisting of synthetic data have been proposed as an alternative, but they fall short of accurately representing the real data distribution. On the other hand, most available data sets are labeled for just a single task, which limits their applicability. To address these issues, we present the Multi-Task Faces (MTF) image data set, a meticulously curated collection of face images designed for various classification tasks, including face recognition, as well as race, gender, and age classification. The MTF data set has been ethically gathered by leveraging publicly available images of celebrities and strictly adhering to copyright regulations. In this paper, we present this data set and provide detailed descriptions of the followed data collection and processing procedures. Furthermore, we evaluate the performance of five deep learning (DL) models on the MTF data set across the aforementioned classification tasks. Additionally, we compare the performance of DL models over the processed MTF data and over raw data crawled from the internet. The reported results constitute a baseline for further research employing these data.     The standard paradigm for fake news detection mainly utilizes text information to model the truthfulness of news. However, the discourse of online fake news is typically subtle and it requires expert knowledge to use textual information to debunk fake news. Recently, studies focusing on multimodal fake news detection have outperformed text-only methods. Recent approaches utilizing the pre-trained model to extract unimodal features, or fine-tuning the pre-trained model directly, have become a new paradigm for detecting fake news. Again, this paradigm either requires a large number of training instances, or updates the entire set of pre-trained model parameters, making real-world fake news detection impractical. Furthermore, traditional multimodal methods fuse the cross-modal features directly without considering that the uncorrelated semantic representation might inject noise into the multimodal features. This paper proposes a Similarity-Aware Multimodal Prompt Learning (SAMPLE) framework. First, we incorporate prompt learning into multimodal fake news detection. Prompt learning, which only tunes prompts with a frozen language model, can reduce memory usage significantly and achieve comparable performances, compared with fine-tuning. We analyse three prompt templates with a soft verbalizer to detect fake news. In addition, we introduce the similarity-aware fusing method to adaptively fuse the intensity of multimodal representation and mitigate the noise injection via uncorrelated cross-modal features. For evaluation, SAMPLE surpasses the F1 and the accuracies of previous works on two benchmark multimodal datasets, demonstrating the effectiveness of the proposed method in detecting fake news. In addition, SAMPLE also is superior to other approaches regardless of few-shot and data-rich settings.

    In recent years, it has been claimed that releasing accurate statistical information on a database is likely to allow its complete reconstruction. Differential privacy has been suggested as the appropriate methodology to prevent these attacks. These claims have recently been taken very seriously by the U.S. Census Bureau and led them to adopt differential privacy for releasing U.S. Census data. This in turn has caused consternation among users of the Census data due to the lack of accuracy of the protected outputs. It has also brought legal action against the U.S. Department of Commerce. In this paper, we trace the origins of the claim that releasing information on a database automatically makes it vulnerable to being exposed by reconstruction attacks and we show that this claim is, in fact, incorrect. We also show that reconstruction can be averted by properly using traditional statistical disclosure control (SDC) techniques. We further show that the geographic level at which exact counts are released is even more relevant to protection than the actual SDC method employed. Finally, we caution against confusing reconstruction and reidentification: using the quality of reconstruction as a metric of reidentification results in exaggerated reidentification risk figures.     We apply network science principles to analyze the coalitions formed by European Union (EU) nations and institutions during litigation proceedings at the European Court of Justice. By constructing Friends and Foes networks, we explore their characteristics and dynamics through the application of cluster detection, motif analysis, and duplex analysis. Our findings demonstrate that the Friends and Foes networks exhibit disassortative behavior, highlighting the inclination of nodes to connect with dissimilar nodes. Furthermore, there is a correlation among centrality measures, indicating that member states and institutions with a larger number of connections play a prominent role in bridging the network. An examination of the modularity of the networks reveals that coalitions tend to align along regional and institutional lines, rather than national government divisions. Additionally, an analysis of triadic binary motifs uncovers a greater level of reciprocity within the Foes network compared to the Friends network.     Funnelling(Fun) is a recently proposed method for cross-lingual text classification (CLTC) based on a two-tier learning ensemble for heterogeneous transfer learning (HTL). In this ensemble method, 1st-tier classifiers, each working on a different and language-dependent feature space, return a vector of calibrated posterior probabilities (with one dimension for each class) for each document, and the final classification decision is taken by a meta-classifier that uses this vector as its input. The meta-classifier can thus exploit class-class correlations, and this (among other things) givesFunan edge over CLTC systems in which these correlations cannot be brought to bear. In this article, we describeGeneralized Funnelling(gFun), a generalization ofFunconsisting of an HTL architecture in which 1st-tier components can be arbitraryview-generating functions, i.e., language-dependent functions that each produce a language-independent representation (“view”) of the (monolingual) document. We describe an instance ofgFunin which the meta-classifier receives as input a vector of calibrated posterior probabilities (as inFun) aggregated to other embedded representations that embody other types of correlations, such as word-class correlations (as encoded byWord-Class Embeddings), word-word correlations (as encoded byMultilingual Unsupervised or Supervised Embeddings), and word-context correlations (as encoded bymultilingual BERT). We show that this instance ofgFunsubstantially improves overFunand over state-of-the-art baselines by reporting experimental results obtained on two large, standard datasets for multilingual multilabel text classification. Our code that implementsgFunis publicly available.

    One direct application of explainable AI feature attribution methods is to be used for detecting unwanted biases. To do so, domain experts typically have to review explained inputs, checking for the presence of unwanted biases learnt by the model. However, the huge amount of samples the domain experts must review makes this task more challenging as the size of the dataset grows. In an ideal case, domain experts should be provided only with a small number of selected samples containing potential biases. The recently published Focus score seems a promising tool for the selection of samples containing potential unwanted biases. In this work, we conduct a first study in this direction, analyzing the behavior of the Focus score when applied to a biased model. First, we verified that Focus is indeed sensitive to an induced bias. This is assessed by forcing a spurious correlation, training a model using only cats-indoor and dogs-outdoor. We empirically prove that the model learnt to distinguish the contexts (outdoor vs indoor) instead of cat vs dog classes, so ensuring that the model learnt an unwanted bias. Afterwards, we apply the Focus on this biased model showing how the Focus score decreases when the input contains the aforementioned bias. This analysis sheds light on the Focus behavior when applied to a biased model, highlighting its strengths for its use for bias detection.     Figurative language is part of our everyday life where meaning is communicated indirectly. Metaphor is among the major figurative devices that are commonly encountered in interactions. The aim of this study is to investigate the use of metaphors to conceptualize abstract concepts namely that of anger in both English and Arabic. To this extent, a corpus consisting of metaphorical expressions denoting anger in both languages was utilized. These expressions were classified based on their metaphorical mappings and later on analysed using Kövecses’ (2002) framework. Results indicated that even though the two languages share a number of anger conceptualizations, they had certain differences. These differences were attributed to difference in language, in the sense that language genius and vocabulary repertoire often influence the conceptualization process. Culture, too, proved to be another source of as elements like climate and life style manipulate the conceptualization process. Note that the study of metaphorical conceptualization of emotions in general and anger specifically is underestimated in Arabic and further research is required

    Network structure is often considered one of the most important features of a network, and various models exist to generate graphs having one of the most studied types of structures, such as blocks/communities or spatial structures. In this article, we introduce a framework for the generation of random graphs with a controlled size -- number of nodes, edges -- and a customizable structure, beyond blocks and spatial ones, based on node-pair rank and a tunable probability function allowing to control the amount of randomness. We introduce a structure zoo -- a collection of original network structures -- and conduct experiments on the small-world properties of networks generated by those structures.     Bias detection in the computer vision field is a necessary task, to achieve fair models. These biases are usually due to undesirable correlations present in the data and learned by the model. Although explainability can be a way to gain insights into model behavior, reviewing explanations is not straightforward. This work proposes a methodology to analyze the model biases without using explainability. By doing so, we reduce the potential noise arising from explainability methods, and we minimize human noise during the analysis of explanations. The proposed methodology combines images of the original distribution with images of potential context biases and analyzes the effect produced in the model’s output. For this work, we first presented and released three new datasets generated by diffusion models. Next, we used the proposed methodology to analyze the context impact on the model’s prediction. Finally, we verified the reliability of the proposed methodology and the consistency of its results. We hope this tool will help practitioners to detect and mitigate potential biases, allowing them to obtain more reliable models.     AbstractNative language identification (NLI) is the task of training (via supervised machine learning) a classifier that guesses the native language of the author of a text. This task has been extensively researched in the last decade, and the performance of NLI systems has steadily improved over the years. We focus on a different facet of the NLI task, i.e. that of analysing the internals of an NLI classifier trained by an explainable machine learning (EML) algorithm, in order to obtain explanations of its classification decisions, with the ultimate goal of gaining insight into which linguistic phenomena ‘give a speaker’s native language away’. We use this perspective in order to tackle both NLI and a (much less researched) companion task, i.e. guessing whether a text has been written by a native or a non-native speaker. Using three datasets of different provenance (two datasets of English learners’ essays and a dataset of social media posts), we investigate which kind of linguistic traits (lexical, morphological, syntactic, and statistical) are most effective for solving our two tasks, namely, are most indicative of a speaker’s L1; our experiments indicate that the most discriminative features are the lexical ones, followed by the morphological, syntactic, and statistical features, in this order. We also present two case studies, one on Italian and one on Spanish learners of English, in which we analyse individual linguistic traits that the classifiers have singled out as most important for spotting these L1s; we show that the traits identified as most discriminative well align with our intuition, i.e. represent typical patterns of language misuse, underuse, or overuse, by speakers of the given L1. Overall, our study shows that the use of EML can be a valuable tool for the scholar who investigates interlanguage facts and language transfer.

    Human facial data hold tremendous potential to address a variety of classification problems, including face recognition, age estimation, gender identification, emotion analysis, and race classification. However, recent privacy regulations, such as the EU General Data Protection Regulation and others, have restricted the ways in which human images may be collected and used for research. As a result, several previously published data sets containing human faces have been removed from the internet due to inadequate data collection methods that failed to meet privacy regulations. Data sets consisting of synthetic data have been proposed as an alternative, but they fall short of accurately representing the real data distribution. On the other hand, most available data sets are labeled for just a single task, which limits their applicability. To address these issues, we present the Multi-Task Faces (MTF) image data set, a meticulously curated collection of face images designed for various classification tasks, including face recognition, as well as race, gender, and age classification. The MTF data set has been ethically gathered by leveraging publicly available images of celebrities and strictly adhering to copyright regulations. In this paper, we present this data set and provide detailed descriptions of the followed data collection and processing procedures. Furthermore, we evaluate the performance of five deep learning (DL) models on the MTF data set across the aforementioned classification tasks. Additionally, we compare the performance of DL models over the processed MTF data and over raw data crawled from the internet. The reported results constitute a baseline for further research employing these data.     The standard paradigm for fake news detection mainly utilizes text information to model the truthfulness of news. However, the discourse of online fake news is typically subtle and it requires expert knowledge to use textual information to debunk fake news. Recently, studies focusing on multimodal fake news detection have outperformed text-only methods. Recent approaches utilizing the pre-trained model to extract unimodal features, or fine-tuning the pre-trained model directly, have become a new paradigm for detecting fake news. Again, this paradigm either requires a large number of training instances, or updates the entire set of pre-trained model parameters, making real-world fake news detection impractical. Furthermore, traditional multimodal methods fuse the cross-modal features directly without considering that the uncorrelated semantic representation might inject noise into the multimodal features. This paper proposes a Similarity-Aware Multimodal Prompt Learning (SAMPLE) framework. First, we incorporate prompt learning into multimodal fake news detection. Prompt learning, which only tunes prompts with a frozen language model, can reduce memory usage significantly and achieve comparable performances, compared with fine-tuning. We analyse three prompt templates with a soft verbalizer to detect fake news. In addition, we introduce the similarity-aware fusing method to adaptively fuse the intensity of multimodal representation and mitigate the noise injection via uncorrelated cross-modal features. For evaluation, SAMPLE surpasses the F1 and the accuracies of previous works on two benchmark multimodal datasets, demonstrating the effectiveness of the proposed method in detecting fake news. In addition, SAMPLE also is superior to other approaches regardless of few-shot and data-rich settings.

    In recent years, it has been claimed that releasing accurate statistical information on a database is likely to allow its complete reconstruction. Differential privacy has been suggested as the appropriate methodology to prevent these attacks. These claims have recently been taken very seriously by the U.S. Census Bureau and led them to adopt differential privacy for releasing U.S. Census data. This in turn has caused consternation among users of the Census data due to the lack of accuracy of the protected outputs. It has also brought legal action against the U.S. Department of Commerce. In this paper, we trace the origins of the claim that releasing information on a database automatically makes it vulnerable to being exposed by reconstruction attacks and we show that this claim is, in fact, incorrect. We also show that reconstruction can be averted by properly using traditional statistical disclosure control (SDC) techniques. We further show that the geographic level at which exact counts are released is even more relevant to protection than the actual SDC method employed. Finally, we caution against confusing reconstruction and reidentification: using the quality of reconstruction as a metric of reidentification results in exaggerated reidentification risk figures.     We apply network science principles to analyze the coalitions formed by European Union (EU) nations and institutions during litigation proceedings at the European Court of Justice. By constructing Friends and Foes networks, we explore their characteristics and dynamics through the application of cluster detection, motif analysis, and duplex analysis. Our findings demonstrate that the Friends and Foes networks exhibit disassortative behavior, highlighting the inclination of nodes to connect with dissimilar nodes. Furthermore, there is a correlation among centrality measures, indicating that member states and institutions with a larger number of connections play a prominent role in bridging the network. An examination of the modularity of the networks reveals that coalitions tend to align along regional and institutional lines, rather than national government divisions. Additionally, an analysis of triadic binary motifs uncovers a greater level of reciprocity within the Foes network compared to the Friends network.     Funnelling(Fun) is a recently proposed method for cross-lingual text classification (CLTC) based on a two-tier learning ensemble for heterogeneous transfer learning (HTL). In this ensemble method, 1st-tier classifiers, each working on a different and language-dependent feature space, return a vector of calibrated posterior probabilities (with one dimension for each class) for each document, and the final classification decision is taken by a meta-classifier that uses this vector as its input. The meta-classifier can thus exploit class-class correlations, and this (among other things) givesFunan edge over CLTC systems in which these correlations cannot be brought to bear. In this article, we describeGeneralized Funnelling(gFun), a generalization ofFunconsisting of an HTL architecture in which 1st-tier components can be arbitraryview-generating functions, i.e., language-dependent functions that each produce a language-independent representation (“view”) of the (monolingual) document. We describe an instance ofgFunin which the meta-classifier receives as input a vector of calibrated posterior probabilities (as inFun) aggregated to other embedded representations that embody other types of correlations, such as word-class correlations (as encoded byWord-Class Embeddings), word-word correlations (as encoded byMultilingual Unsupervised or Supervised Embeddings), and word-context correlations (as encoded bymultilingual BERT). We show that this instance ofgFunsubstantially improves overFunand over state-of-the-art baselines by reporting experimental results obtained on two large, standard datasets for multilingual multilabel text classification. Our code that implementsgFunis publicly available.

    One direct application of explainable AI feature attribution methods is to be used for detecting unwanted biases. To do so, domain experts typically have to review explained inputs, checking for the presence of unwanted biases learnt by the model. However, the huge amount of samples the domain experts must review makes this task more challenging as the size of the dataset grows. In an ideal case, domain experts should be provided only with a small number of selected samples containing potential biases. The recently published Focus score seems a promising tool for the selection of samples containing potential unwanted biases. In this work, we conduct a first study in this direction, analyzing the behavior of the Focus score when applied to a biased model. First, we verified that Focus is indeed sensitive to an induced bias. This is assessed by forcing a spurious correlation, training a model using only cats-indoor and dogs-outdoor. We empirically prove that the model learnt to distinguish the contexts (outdoor vs indoor) instead of cat vs dog classes, so ensuring that the model learnt an unwanted bias. Afterwards, we apply the Focus on this biased model showing how the Focus score decreases when the input contains the aforementioned bias. This analysis sheds light on the Focus behavior when applied to a biased model, highlighting its strengths for its use for bias detection.     Figurative language is part of our everyday life where meaning is communicated indirectly. Metaphor is among the major figurative devices that are commonly encountered in interactions. The aim of this study is to investigate the use of metaphors to conceptualize abstract concepts namely that of anger in both English and Arabic. To this extent, a corpus consisting of metaphorical expressions denoting anger in both languages was utilized. These expressions were classified based on their metaphorical mappings and later on analysed using Kövecses’ (2002) framework. Results indicated that even though the two languages share a number of anger conceptualizations, they had certain differences. These differences were attributed to difference in language, in the sense that language genius and vocabulary repertoire often influence the conceptualization process. Culture, too, proved to be another source of as elements like climate and life style manipulate the conceptualization process. Note that the study of metaphorical conceptualization of emotions in general and anger specifically is underestimated in Arabic and further research is required
