Abstract The sand connectivity in object- and pixel-based models is inevitably controlled by the proportion of sand present, and these methods seem unable to generate models that reproduce systems with low connectivity at high net:gross ratios. A new workflow is described which addresses this limitation and permits poorly connected facies models conditioned to well data to be built. The approach combines the compression algorithm with multiple-point statistics (MPS) modelling. Geometrically transformed wells and appropriately scaled training images provide the inputs to the MPS modelling. The inverse transformation is applied to the resultant MPS model, leading to the creation of reservoir geomodels with realistic, user-defined connectivity while also honouring well data. The approach is described and validated using a range of models. Considerations of other potential workflows using different types of training image suggest that application of the compression algorithm may be necessary in general to achieve models with realistic connectivity using the simplest and most widely-available pixel-based MPS method (the SNESIM algorithm).

Social media popularity and importance is on the increase due to people using it for various types of social interaction across multiple channels. This systematic review focuses on the evolving research area of Social Opinion Mining, tasked with the identification of multiple opinion dimensions, such as subjectivity, sentiment polarity, emotion, affect, sarcasm and irony, from user-generated content represented across multiple social media platforms and in various media formats, like text, image, video and audio. Through Social Opinion Mining, natural language can be understood in terms of the different opinion dimensions, as expressed by humans. This contributes towards the evolution of Artificial Intelligence which in turn helps the advancement of several real-world use cases, such as customer service and decision making. A thorough systematic review was carried out on Social Opinion Mining research which totals 485 published studies and spans a period of twelve years between 2007 and 2018. The in-depth analysis focuses on the social media platforms, techniques, social datasets, language, modality, tools and technologies, and other aspects derived. Social Opinion Mining can be utilised in many application areas, ranging from marketing, advertising and sales for product/service management, and in multiple domains and industries, such as politics, technology, finance, healthcare, sports and government. The latest developments in Social Opinion Mining beyond 2018 are also presented together with future research directions, with the aim of leaving a wider academic and societal impact in several real-world applications. Comment: 170 pages, 3 figures. This is a preprint of an article published in Artificial Intelligence Review (2021)

Abstract. Volcanic signatures archived in polar ice sheets provide important opportunities to date and correlate ice-core records as well as to investigate the environmental impacts of eruptions. Only the geochemical characterization of volcanic ash (tephra) embedded in the ice strata can confirm the source of the eruption, however, and is a requisite if historical eruption ages are to be used as valid chronological checks on annual ice layer counting. Here we report the investigation of ash particles in a Greenland ice core that are associated with a volcanic sulfuric acid layer previously attributed to the 79 CE eruption of Vesuvius. Major and trace element composition of the particles indicates that the tephra does not derive from Vesuvius but most likely originates from an unidentified eruption in the Aleutian arc. Using ash dispersal modelling, we find that only an eruption large enough to include stratospheric injection is likely to account for the sizeable (24–85 μm) ash particles observed in the Greenland ice at this time. Despite its likely explosivity, this event does not appear to have triggered significant climate perturbations, unlike some other large extra-tropical eruptions. In light of a recent re-evaluation of the Greenland ice-core chronologies, our findings further challenge the previous dating of this volcanic event to 79 CE. We highlight the need for the revised Common Era ice-core chronology to be formally accepted by the wider ice-core and climate modelling communities in order to ensure robust age linkages to precisely dated historical and paleoclimate proxy records.

AbstractThis paper presents results of the effect of different translation modalities on users when working with the Microsoft Word user interface. An experimental study was set up with 84 Japanese, German, Spanish, and English native speakers working with Microsoft Word in three modalities: the published translated version, a machine translated (MT) version (with unedited MT strings incorporated into the MS Word interface) and the published English version. An eye-tracker measured the cognitive load and usability according to the ISO/TR 16982 guidelines: i.e., effectiveness, efficiency, and satisfaction followed by retrospective think-aloud protocol. The results show that the users’ effectiveness (number of tasks completed) does not significantly differ due to the translation modality. However, their efficiency (time for task completion) and self-reported satisfaction are significantly higher when working with the released product as opposed to the unedited MT version, especially when participants are less experienced. The eye-tracking results show that users experience a higher cognitive load when working with MT and with the human-translated versions as opposed to the English original. The results suggest that language and translation modality play a significant role in the usability of software products whether users complete the given tasks or not and even if they are unaware that MT was used to translate the interface.

Abstract The kinematic interaction of thin salt layers during basin evolution has received little attention to date, despite there being several basins which contain multiple thin salt layers across NW Europe. This study utilises high-quality 3D seismic reflection data coupled with borehole data to investigate the evolution of the structure containing the Corrib gas field which is composed of two distinct salt structures. Located in the Slyne Basin offshore NW Ireland, the structure consists of a NE-SW oriented Permian salt anticline which folds the overlying Mesozoic stratigraphy. Upper Triassic salt acts as a second mechanical detachment and forms an elongate salt roller parallel to the crest of the Permian salt anticline. The Upper Triassic salt roller forms the footwall of a listric fault which downthrows the anticlinal crest of the folded Jurassic section to the SE. The Permian salt anticline began rising during the Late Triassic and Early Jurassic driven by low-strain regional extension. During the main phase of rifting, a combination of basement tilting, gravity gliding, and salt welding resulted in a steep increase in the amplitude of the Permian salt anticline. The relief on the salt-cored fold resulted in gravity gliding on the Triassic salt, forming the parallel salt roller and listric fault. The throw distribution on the listric fault is driven by the combined mechanisms of gravity sliding on the Triassic salt and by inflation of Triassic salt in the footwall of the fault. The listric fault is reactivated post-rift, suggesting modification of the Permian and Triassic salt structures. This study improves the understanding of the kinematic interaction of thin salt layers during syn-rift and post-rift deformation, with implications for hydrocarbon exploration on the Irish Atlantic margin and further afield.

AbstractObjectiveThe clinical features of epilepsy determine how it is defined, which in turn guides management. Therefore, consideration of the fundamental clinical entities that comprise an epilepsy is essential in the study of causes, trajectories, and treatment responses. The Human Phenotype Ontology (HPO) is used widely in clinical and research genetics for concise communication and modeling of clinical features, allowing extracted data to be harmonized using logical inference. We sought to redesign the HPO seizure subontology to improve its consistency with current epileptological concepts, supporting the use of large clinical data sets in high‐throughput clinical and research genomics.MethodsWe created a new HPO seizure subontology based on the 2017 International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE) Operational Classification of Seizure Types, and integrated concepts of status epilepticus, febrile, reflex, and neonatal seizures at different levels of detail. We compared the HPO seizure subontology prior to, and following, our revision, according to the information that could be inferred about the seizures of 791 individuals from three independent cohorts: 2 previously published and 150 newly recruited individuals. Each cohort's data were provided in a different format and harmonized using the two versions of the HPO.ResultsThe new seizure subontology increased the number of descriptive concepts for seizures 5‐fold. The number of seizure descriptors that could be annotated to the cohort increased by 40% and the total amount of information about individuals' seizures increased by 38%. The most important qualitative difference was the relationship of focal to bilateral tonic‐clonic seizure to generalized‐onset and focal‐onset seizures.SignificanceWe have generated a detailed contemporary conceptual map for harmonization of clinical seizure data, implemented in the official 2020‐12‐07 HPO release and freely available at hpo.jax.org. This will help to overcome the phenotypic bottleneck in genomics, facilitate reuse of valuable data, and ultimately improve diagnostics and precision treatment of the epilepsies.

Electric fields are involved in numerous physiological processes, including directional embryonic development and wound healing following injury. To study these processes in vitro and/or to harness electric field stimulation as a biophysical environmental cue for organised tissue engineering strategies various electric field stimulation systems have been developed. These systems are overall similar in design and have been shown to influence morphology, orientation, migration and phenotype of several different cell types. This review discusses different electric field stimulation setups and their effect on cell response. In digital agriculture, agronomists are required to make timely, profitable and more actionable precise decisions based on knowledge and experience. The input can be cultivated and related agricultural data, and one of them is text data, including news articles, business news, policy documents, or farming notes. To process this kind of data, identifying agricultural entities in the text is necessary to update news with agricultural orientation. This task is called Agriculture Entity Recognition (AGER - a kind of Named Entity Recognition task, NER, in the agriculture domain). However, there are very few approaches on AGER because of a lack of the consistent tagset and resources. In this study, we developed a new tagset for AGER to cover popular concepts in agriculture and we also propose a process for this task that consists of two stages: in the first stage, we use semantic-based approaches for detecting agricultural entities and semi-automatically build an annotated corpus of agricultural entities, while in the second stage, we identify the agricultural entities from the plain text using a deep learning approach, train on the annotated corpus. For the evaluation and validation, we build an annotated agriculture corpus and demonstrated the efficiency and robustness of our approach.

We describe the DCU-EPFL submission to the IWPT 2021 Shared Task on Parsing into Enhanced Universal Dependencies. The task involves parsing Enhanced UD graphs, which are an extension of the basic dependency trees designed to be more facilitative towards representing semantic structure. Evaluation is carried out on 29 treebanks in 17 languages and participants are required to parse the data from each language starting from raw strings. Our approach uses the Stanza pipeline to preprocess the text files, XLMRoBERTa to obtain contextualized token representations, and an edge-scoring and labeling model to predict the enhanced graph. Finally, we run a post-processing script to ensure all of our outputs are valid Enhanced UD graphs. Our system places 6th out of 9 participants with a coarse Enhanced Labeled Attachment Score (ELAS) of 83.57. We carry out additional post-deadline experiments which include using Trankit for pre-processing, XLM-RoBERTa-LARGE, treebank concatenation, and multitask learning between a basic and an enhanced dependency parser. All of these modifications improve our initial score and our final system has a coarse ELAS of 88.04. Submitted to the IWPT 2021 Shared Task: From Raw Text to Enhanced Universal Dependencies: the Parsing Shared Task at IWPT 2021

In this work, nitinol samples were produced via Laser Powder Bed Fusion (L-PBF) in the horizontal and vertical orientations with systematic variations in laser power, scan speed and hatch spacing parameters. Increased density was positively correlated with increased laser power, scan speed and hatch spacing for the horizontally built samples but not for the vertically built samples. A smaller difference in the average temperature within a printed layer, associated with the vertically built samples, was linked with reduced porosity and reduced porosity variability between samples. Control of the L-PBF parameters was found to allow control of the resulting part chemical composition which also directly affected phase transforma- tion temperatures, and related phase structures. The laser process parameters were found to have a sig- nificant effect (p < 0.01) on the martensite start/finish temperature, austenite start/finish temperatures, and the total temperature span. The volumetric energy density was also found to have a direct correlation with both the cooling (r = 0.52) and heating (r = 0.53) enthalpies, which was found to be due to increased nickel evaporation. Such control of phase change properties afforded from L-PBF is important for many of the end applications for nitinol components including within the energy and precision actuation sectors
