    Mastering a colour—as such, its ‘domestication’—involves a weft of technological and symbolic relationships encompassed in the human ability to reproduce a visible colour using the techniques of textile dyeing. The Regimento dos panos or Regimento dos trapeiros (‘regulation of fabrics’ or ‘regulation of drapers’), published in 1573 and expanded in 1690, is a document made up of 107 chapters aiming to standardise the various stages of the production chain of woollen goods in Portugal. In the sections relating to the finishing of fabrics, the regulation carefully details the dyeing of the colour black. The main aim of this text is to discuss the four recipes presented in that document. The system presupposed a phase exogenous to the rules, since the fabrics had to be previously dyed blue (‘celestial blues’) by means of successive immersions of the cloth in a vat with indigo. The dyeing itself was achieved by mixing mordants and auxiliaries (alum, tartar, iron sulphate, and tannins) with a red dye (madder). The main conclusion is that the formulae presented do not constitute, in their general principles, a characteristic Portuguese methodology. In addition, the article includes an inventory of the raw materials used for dyeing in the Early Modern Age, produced, through a qualitative method, through cross-reference with other manuscript and printed sources, as well as an interpretation of their social and economic importance, and a systematisation of the types of Portuguese wools.     En Portugal, a diferencia de otros países, como España y Francia, las finanzas y los libros de cuentas municipales han presentado dificultades a la hora de afirmarse como objetos de estudio específicos y privilegiados dentro de la historia urbana y económica medieval. Esta situación se explica, en parte, por la escasez de fuentes para su estudio, lo que no es el caso de Loulé, una pequeña villa que cuenta con la serie de libros de contabilidad más antigua y la segunda mayor del país. Aprovechando esta circunstancia, a partir del caso de Loulé, se pretende contribuir a una mejor comprensión de los procesos de elaboración y control de los libros de contabilidad de los pequeños y medianos núcleos urbanos medievales portugueses. Para ello, se estudian los casos de funcionarios municipales vinculados a la gestión municipal; el proceso de elaboración, organización y control de los libros de cuentas; y los procedimientos de auditoría y sus responsables. Por último, se reflexiona sobre la conservación de los libros de cuentas y su influencia en la elaboración de otros registros contables.

    Las cuentas oculadas son uno de los tipos más característicos y reconocibles de cuentas de vidrio prerromanas en el Mediterráneo y más allá. Sin embargo, su diversidad, y su significado cultural y cronológico no siempre son debidamente reconocidos. Ello es resultado de la publicación somera e incompleta de muchos ejemplares, pero también de la adopción de sistemas clasificatorios que, a pesar de válidos, no dan cuenta del potencial informativo de estas piezas. Con base en el estudio de las cuentas oculadas de la Edad del Hierro del sur de Portugal, este trabajo propone un sistema de clasificación explícito y abierto. Los datos recopilados sugieren que los patrones decorativos de las cuentas oculadas en el área de estudio tienen un significado crono-cultural, que podría señalar cambios en las cadenas de suministro y los patrones de conectividad de las comunidades locales entre la I y la II Edad del Hierro.

    En el contexto del estudio de las finanzas de la Universidad, este artículo pretende comparar dos fuentes de distinta tipología, una de carácter cuantitativo y otra de carácter cualitativo. La primera corresponde a los libros de ingresos y gastos de la Universidad, un registro detallado de todos los flujos de caja de la institución. La segunda fuente corresponde a la Relação do Rector Francisco de Lemos, que proporciona un testimonio detallado sobre las finanzas de esta Universidad. La información contable se introdujo en una base de datos para categorizar los diferentes ingresos y gastos y calcular las sumas. La comparación entre estos dos tipos de fuentes buscará responder a nuestra pregunta central: ¿cuáles son las similitudes y diferencias entre las fuentes, en relación con la realidad financiera de la Universidad de Coimbra entre 1773 y 1777? Los libros de ingresos y gastos resultan ser mejores instrumentos para el análisis financiero. Las mayores diferencias entre las cuentas fueron la no inclusión de los créditos solicitados para la ejecución de obras por parte de la Universidad, así como la separación de las obras de los demás gastos, por parte de Don Francisco, con el fin de ocultar el endeudamiento real de la Universidad.

    The Future Museums Project Group was created under the Portuguese Ministry of Culture with the mission of proposing recommendations for a 10-year public policy for museums, palaces, and monuments, considering sustainability, accessibility, and innovation issues and their relevance in society. Against this background, museums were understood as agents of change with a role to play in achieving a more sustainable future, and culture as a fundamental pillar for democracy and sustainable development. This study discusses the findings of the project, focusing on three features that highlight the approach adopted to sustainability, which included collections management, participation, and mediation. Drawn from empirical research, a series of concrete recommendations, both for policy makers and museums, are discussed. The study concludes by arguing that cultural policies must place sustainability at the core of their strategy in order to function as a framework to drive and implement sustainable development practices in museums and heritage. Furthermore, within the scope of post-pandemic recovery plans, climate emergency, and the energy crisis, it is even more pressing that cultural policies provide support for museums and heritage and ensure that they have the conditions and resources to be able to move forward in a more integrated manner, thus contributing to a sustainable future.

    Antoine Janot and Paul Gout were 18th-century master dyers who specialised in the piece-dyeing of fine wool broadcloths manufactured in Languedoc (southern France) for exportation to the Levant. They wrote treatises, similarly entitled Mémoires de Teinture (Memoirs on Dyeing), illustrated with dozens of dyed textile samples. Janot’s is dated 1744, and Gout’s is dated 1763. These books are full of extremely valuable information, which is unique to its time: the books are composed of carefully described recipes for every colour, each originally preceded by a sample swatch. The yellows of both master dyers made from weld (Reseda luteola L.), belonging to recipes described as Jaune (yellow), were reproduced. The influence of the ingredients, in both the mordanting and dyeing baths, was assessed, and the timings for both baths, which in many recipes are not clear, were tested. This provided key knowledge on the technological processes for dyeing with weld from these 18th c. French masters. The resulting reference samples were preliminarily analysed by a multi-analytical approach. Their chromatic specifications, expressed in the CIEL*a*b*, were compared with those in the Mémoires. Moreover, the influence of the recipe on the percentages of the chromophores was assessed by HPLC-DAD. It was found that the bran and tartar in the mordanting bath influence the final obtained colour and that lime is essential to obtain a bright yellow. International audience

    From its origins in Asia, cultivation of Oryza sativa L. in Portugal has had to adapt to local agroecological conditions. Since the late eighteenth century, there has been significant human intervention in rice production, particularly through public policies aimed at increasing production to achieve national food self-sufficiency. Using national and regional statistics on rice production, this article analyses how public policies on rice cultivation over the last 160 years have impacted and interacted with territorial agroecological conditions and the genetic characteristics of the rice varieties being cultivated. We concluded that public policies led to increased production by favouring the geographical reorganisation of rice production based on the rice varieties used and changing territorial agroecological conditions.

    Museums housed in historical buildings combine the intrinsic value of the collections with the historical and architectural values of the building itself. Although usually made with thick elements with high thermal inertia, very effective in damping and delaying the heat flow, these buildings are usually characterized by elements with low thermal resistance, poor-quality windows and low area/volume ratio in the noblest buildings, which renders them ineffective at maintaining a stable indoor climate adequate for conservation, comfort and energy efficiency issues. In this paper, a simulation study was carried out to analyze the impact of the building location (weather), thermal envelope and climate control strategies by analyzing a generic room of the National Museum of Ancient Art of Lisbon. A simulation study was carried out for 15 European cities to verify the impossibility of standardizing the rehabilitation solutions in cultural heritage since energy needs depend on the location. It was concluded that the focus on climate control strategies has great potential for energy reduction and that in temperate climates of southern Europe, the improvement of thermal transmittance has a reduced effect on the building’s response.

    [ES] El Valle del Côa, inscrito en la Lista del Patrimonio Mundial desde 1998, presenta más de 1200 paneles rocosos grabados al aire libre. El Parque Arqueológico del Valle del Côa ha documentado meticulosamente estos motivos de arte rupestre, empleando diversas técnicas que incluyen procesos de trazado directo sobre las rocas, utilizando tanto iluminación natural como artificial. Sin embargo, este trabajo intensivo es muy exigente, sobre todo teniendo en cuenta que muchas de las rocas no son fácilmente accesibles. En el contexto del proyecto "Open Access Rock Art Repository" (RARAA), este artículo presenta una metodología para el estudio tridimensional (3D) de rocas con motivos de arte rupestre, así como la posterior producción de ortofotos a partir de los modelos 3D resultantes, realizada mediante fotogrametría. Estas ortofotos sirven de base para el dibujo vectorial de los motivos. Sorprendentemente, el nivel de detalle captado en estos registros ha demostrado que la mayoría de los motivos son visibles y pueden representarse con precisión a través de las ortofotos. Esto ha reducido significativamente el tiempo necesario a la hora de realizar las inspecciones sobre el terreno. Sin embargo, en algunos casos en los que pequeñas zonas específicas del panel se ven afectadas por condiciones de iluminación difíciles, sigue siendo necesario realizar más trabajo de campo, de forma análoga al proceso de trazado directo. Además, se introduce un sistema de información diseñado para integrar los gráficos vectoriales y los datos de caracterización de los motivos; ello es un apoyo a la investigación en el área y promueve un acceso abierto mejorado con el potencial de reutilización de las nuevas interpretaciones, o la integración en futuros proyectos. Mediante la creación de modelos 3D muy detallados, no sólo se complementa los dibujos bidimensionales de las superficies, sino que también se garantiza la conservación digital tanto de las rocas como de la iconografía asociada. Estos registros sirven como sustitutos digitales muy detallados que facilitan los esfuerzos de seguimiento de las rocas y los motivos, asegurando la disponibilidad de valiosos recursos en futuras investigaciones y análisis, incluso si se producen cambios naturales o deliberados. [EN] The Côa Valley, listed as a World Heritage site since 1998, presents over 1200 open-air engraved rock panels. TheArchaeological Park of the Côa Valley has meticulously documented these rock art motifs, employing various techniques including direct tracing processes on the rocks, using both natural and artificial lighting. However, this intensive work is highly demanding, especially considering that many of the rocks are not easily accessible. In the context of the "Open Access Rock Art Repository" (RARAA) project, this paper presents a methodology for the three-dimensional (3D) survey of rocks with rock art motifs, as well as the subsequent production of orthophotos from the resulting 3D models, accomplished through photogrammetry. These orthophotos serve as the foundation for the vector drawing of the motifs. Remarkably, the level of detail captured in these records has shown that most of the motifs are visible and can be accurately represented through the orthophotos. This has significantly reduced the time required for field surveys. However, in certain cases where specific small areas of the panel are affected by challenging lighting conditions, further fieldwork is still necessary, analogous to the direct tracing process. Additionally, this study introduces an information system designed to integrate the vector graphics and the motifs characterisation data; this supports enhanced research in the area and promotes improved open access for potential reuse in new interpretations or integration into future projects. By creating highly detailed 3D models, the authors complement the two-dimensional drawings of the surfaces and ensure the digital preservation of both the rocks and the associated iconography. These records serve as highly detailed digital surrogates that facilitate the monitoring efforts of the rocks and motifs; they also guarantee the availability of valuable resources for future research and analysis, even if natural or deliberate changes occur. Publisher Copyright: © 2023 The Author(s) The Palace of Knossos, located on the island of Crete, Greece, is one of Europe's most important archaeological sites, serving as a testament to the Minoan civilization. Situated near the Mediterranean Sea, it is in close proximity to the seaport, airport, and industrial areas. Decay products commonly found in historical monuments within or near urban areas, such as black crusts and salt efflorescence, are also prevalent at the Palace of Knossos. To better understand the characteristics of the type of deterioration compounds found on cement in historical reconstruction zones, as well as their possible relationship with factors influencing the deterioration process, a multi-analytical approach was designed for the study of these materials. The results indicate that the black crusts primarily consist of gypsum and carbonaceous matter. However, the efflorescence salts are predominantly composed of thenardite instead of halite, despite the palace's proximity to the coastal area. These results may contribute to ongoing and future maintenance and preservation efforts for the monument. publishersversion published

    Mastering a colour—as such, its ‘domestication’—involves a weft of technological and symbolic relationships encompassed in the human ability to reproduce a visible colour using the techniques of textile dyeing. The Regimento dos panos or Regimento dos trapeiros (‘regulation of fabrics’ or ‘regulation of drapers’), published in 1573 and expanded in 1690, is a document made up of 107 chapters aiming to standardise the various stages of the production chain of woollen goods in Portugal. In the sections relating to the finishing of fabrics, the regulation carefully details the dyeing of the colour black. The main aim of this text is to discuss the four recipes presented in that document. The system presupposed a phase exogenous to the rules, since the fabrics had to be previously dyed blue (‘celestial blues’) by means of successive immersions of the cloth in a vat with indigo. The dyeing itself was achieved by mixing mordants and auxiliaries (alum, tartar, iron sulphate, and tannins) with a red dye (madder). The main conclusion is that the formulae presented do not constitute, in their general principles, a characteristic Portuguese methodology. In addition, the article includes an inventory of the raw materials used for dyeing in the Early Modern Age, produced, through a qualitative method, through cross-reference with other manuscript and printed sources, as well as an interpretation of their social and economic importance, and a systematisation of the types of Portuguese wools.     En Portugal, a diferencia de otros países, como España y Francia, las finanzas y los libros de cuentas municipales han presentado dificultades a la hora de afirmarse como objetos de estudio específicos y privilegiados dentro de la historia urbana y económica medieval. Esta situación se explica, en parte, por la escasez de fuentes para su estudio, lo que no es el caso de Loulé, una pequeña villa que cuenta con la serie de libros de contabilidad más antigua y la segunda mayor del país. Aprovechando esta circunstancia, a partir del caso de Loulé, se pretende contribuir a una mejor comprensión de los procesos de elaboración y control de los libros de contabilidad de los pequeños y medianos núcleos urbanos medievales portugueses. Para ello, se estudian los casos de funcionarios municipales vinculados a la gestión municipal; el proceso de elaboración, organización y control de los libros de cuentas; y los procedimientos de auditoría y sus responsables. Por último, se reflexiona sobre la conservación de los libros de cuentas y su influencia en la elaboración de otros registros contables.

    Las cuentas oculadas son uno de los tipos más característicos y reconocibles de cuentas de vidrio prerromanas en el Mediterráneo y más allá. Sin embargo, su diversidad, y su significado cultural y cronológico no siempre son debidamente reconocidos. Ello es resultado de la publicación somera e incompleta de muchos ejemplares, pero también de la adopción de sistemas clasificatorios que, a pesar de válidos, no dan cuenta del potencial informativo de estas piezas. Con base en el estudio de las cuentas oculadas de la Edad del Hierro del sur de Portugal, este trabajo propone un sistema de clasificación explícito y abierto. Los datos recopilados sugieren que los patrones decorativos de las cuentas oculadas en el área de estudio tienen un significado crono-cultural, que podría señalar cambios en las cadenas de suministro y los patrones de conectividad de las comunidades locales entre la I y la II Edad del Hierro.

    En el contexto del estudio de las finanzas de la Universidad, este artículo pretende comparar dos fuentes de distinta tipología, una de carácter cuantitativo y otra de carácter cualitativo. La primera corresponde a los libros de ingresos y gastos de la Universidad, un registro detallado de todos los flujos de caja de la institución. La segunda fuente corresponde a la Relação do Rector Francisco de Lemos, que proporciona un testimonio detallado sobre las finanzas de esta Universidad. La información contable se introdujo en una base de datos para categorizar los diferentes ingresos y gastos y calcular las sumas. La comparación entre estos dos tipos de fuentes buscará responder a nuestra pregunta central: ¿cuáles son las similitudes y diferencias entre las fuentes, en relación con la realidad financiera de la Universidad de Coimbra entre 1773 y 1777? Los libros de ingresos y gastos resultan ser mejores instrumentos para el análisis financiero. Las mayores diferencias entre las cuentas fueron la no inclusión de los créditos solicitados para la ejecución de obras por parte de la Universidad, así como la separación de las obras de los demás gastos, por parte de Don Francisco, con el fin de ocultar el endeudamiento real de la Universidad.

    The Future Museums Project Group was created under the Portuguese Ministry of Culture with the mission of proposing recommendations for a 10-year public policy for museums, palaces, and monuments, considering sustainability, accessibility, and innovation issues and their relevance in society. Against this background, museums were understood as agents of change with a role to play in achieving a more sustainable future, and culture as a fundamental pillar for democracy and sustainable development. This study discusses the findings of the project, focusing on three features that highlight the approach adopted to sustainability, which included collections management, participation, and mediation. Drawn from empirical research, a series of concrete recommendations, both for policy makers and museums, are discussed. The study concludes by arguing that cultural policies must place sustainability at the core of their strategy in order to function as a framework to drive and implement sustainable development practices in museums and heritage. Furthermore, within the scope of post-pandemic recovery plans, climate emergency, and the energy crisis, it is even more pressing that cultural policies provide support for museums and heritage and ensure that they have the conditions and resources to be able to move forward in a more integrated manner, thus contributing to a sustainable future.

    Antoine Janot and Paul Gout were 18th-century master dyers who specialised in the piece-dyeing of fine wool broadcloths manufactured in Languedoc (southern France) for exportation to the Levant. They wrote treatises, similarly entitled Mémoires de Teinture (Memoirs on Dyeing), illustrated with dozens of dyed textile samples. Janot’s is dated 1744, and Gout’s is dated 1763. These books are full of extremely valuable information, which is unique to its time: the books are composed of carefully described recipes for every colour, each originally preceded by a sample swatch. The yellows of both master dyers made from weld (Reseda luteola L.), belonging to recipes described as Jaune (yellow), were reproduced. The influence of the ingredients, in both the mordanting and dyeing baths, was assessed, and the timings for both baths, which in many recipes are not clear, were tested. This provided key knowledge on the technological processes for dyeing with weld from these 18th c. French masters. The resulting reference samples were preliminarily analysed by a multi-analytical approach. Their chromatic specifications, expressed in the CIEL*a*b*, were compared with those in the Mémoires. Moreover, the influence of the recipe on the percentages of the chromophores was assessed by HPLC-DAD. It was found that the bran and tartar in the mordanting bath influence the final obtained colour and that lime is essential to obtain a bright yellow. International audience

    From its origins in Asia, cultivation of Oryza sativa L. in Portugal has had to adapt to local agroecological conditions. Since the late eighteenth century, there has been significant human intervention in rice production, particularly through public policies aimed at increasing production to achieve national food self-sufficiency. Using national and regional statistics on rice production, this article analyses how public policies on rice cultivation over the last 160 years have impacted and interacted with territorial agroecological conditions and the genetic characteristics of the rice varieties being cultivated. We concluded that public policies led to increased production by favouring the geographical reorganisation of rice production based on the rice varieties used and changing territorial agroecological conditions.

    Museums housed in historical buildings combine the intrinsic value of the collections with the historical and architectural values of the building itself. Although usually made with thick elements with high thermal inertia, very effective in damping and delaying the heat flow, these buildings are usually characterized by elements with low thermal resistance, poor-quality windows and low area/volume ratio in the noblest buildings, which renders them ineffective at maintaining a stable indoor climate adequate for conservation, comfort and energy efficiency issues. In this paper, a simulation study was carried out to analyze the impact of the building location (weather), thermal envelope and climate control strategies by analyzing a generic room of the National Museum of Ancient Art of Lisbon. A simulation study was carried out for 15 European cities to verify the impossibility of standardizing the rehabilitation solutions in cultural heritage since energy needs depend on the location. It was concluded that the focus on climate control strategies has great potential for energy reduction and that in temperate climates of southern Europe, the improvement of thermal transmittance has a reduced effect on the building’s response.

    [ES] El Valle del Côa, inscrito en la Lista del Patrimonio Mundial desde 1998, presenta más de 1200 paneles rocosos grabados al aire libre. El Parque Arqueológico del Valle del Côa ha documentado meticulosamente estos motivos de arte rupestre, empleando diversas técnicas que incluyen procesos de trazado directo sobre las rocas, utilizando tanto iluminación natural como artificial. Sin embargo, este trabajo intensivo es muy exigente, sobre todo teniendo en cuenta que muchas de las rocas no son fácilmente accesibles. En el contexto del proyecto "Open Access Rock Art Repository" (RARAA), este artículo presenta una metodología para el estudio tridimensional (3D) de rocas con motivos de arte rupestre, así como la posterior producción de ortofotos a partir de los modelos 3D resultantes, realizada mediante fotogrametría. Estas ortofotos sirven de base para el dibujo vectorial de los motivos. Sorprendentemente, el nivel de detalle captado en estos registros ha demostrado que la mayoría de los motivos son visibles y pueden representarse con precisión a través de las ortofotos. Esto ha reducido significativamente el tiempo necesario a la hora de realizar las inspecciones sobre el terreno. Sin embargo, en algunos casos en los que pequeñas zonas específicas del panel se ven afectadas por condiciones de iluminación difíciles, sigue siendo necesario realizar más trabajo de campo, de forma análoga al proceso de trazado directo. Además, se introduce un sistema de información diseñado para integrar los gráficos vectoriales y los datos de caracterización de los motivos; ello es un apoyo a la investigación en el área y promueve un acceso abierto mejorado con el potencial de reutilización de las nuevas interpretaciones, o la integración en futuros proyectos. Mediante la creación de modelos 3D muy detallados, no sólo se complementa los dibujos bidimensionales de las superficies, sino que también se garantiza la conservación digital tanto de las rocas como de la iconografía asociada. Estos registros sirven como sustitutos digitales muy detallados que facilitan los esfuerzos de seguimiento de las rocas y los motivos, asegurando la disponibilidad de valiosos recursos en futuras investigaciones y análisis, incluso si se producen cambios naturales o deliberados. [EN] The Côa Valley, listed as a World Heritage site since 1998, presents over 1200 open-air engraved rock panels. TheArchaeological Park of the Côa Valley has meticulously documented these rock art motifs, employing various techniques including direct tracing processes on the rocks, using both natural and artificial lighting. However, this intensive work is highly demanding, especially considering that many of the rocks are not easily accessible. In the context of the "Open Access Rock Art Repository" (RARAA) project, this paper presents a methodology for the three-dimensional (3D) survey of rocks with rock art motifs, as well as the subsequent production of orthophotos from the resulting 3D models, accomplished through photogrammetry. These orthophotos serve as the foundation for the vector drawing of the motifs. Remarkably, the level of detail captured in these records has shown that most of the motifs are visible and can be accurately represented through the orthophotos. This has significantly reduced the time required for field surveys. However, in certain cases where specific small areas of the panel are affected by challenging lighting conditions, further fieldwork is still necessary, analogous to the direct tracing process. Additionally, this study introduces an information system designed to integrate the vector graphics and the motifs characterisation data; this supports enhanced research in the area and promotes improved open access for potential reuse in new interpretations or integration into future projects. By creating highly detailed 3D models, the authors complement the two-dimensional drawings of the surfaces and ensure the digital preservation of both the rocks and the associated iconography. These records serve as highly detailed digital surrogates that facilitate the monitoring efforts of the rocks and motifs; they also guarantee the availability of valuable resources for future research and analysis, even if natural or deliberate changes occur. Situated near the Mediterranean Sea, it is in close proximity to the seaport, airport, and industrial areas. Decay products commonly found in historical monuments within or near urban areas, such as black crusts and salt efflorescence, are also prevalent at the Palace of Knossos. To better understand the characteristics of the type of deterioration compounds found on cement in historical reconstruction zones, as well as their possible relationship with factors influencing the deterioration process, a multi-analytical approach was designed for the study of these materials. The results indicate that the black crusts primarily consist of gypsum and carbonaceous matter. However, the efflorescence salts are predominantly composed of thenardite instead of halite, despite the palace's proximity to the coastal area. These results may contribute to ongoing and future maintenance and preservation efforts for the monument. publishersversion published
