    In comparison to its emissions reductions policy, the European Union’s (EU) policy for achieving carbon dioxide (CO2) removals is underdeveloped. Only in forestry and land usemanagement does current EU law allow its Member States to use removals to comply with their climate policy commitments. This excludes the potential role that novel removals could play for effectively and efficiently addressing climate policy objectives. Novel removals with significantEuropean potential include bioenergy with carbon capture and storage, biochar, enhanced weathering, marine removal options like alkalinity enhancement, and direct air carbon captureand storage.Emissions reductions are crucial to mitigating climate change. However, in the past decade, the world community’s failure to reduce emissions at a sufficient speed to avoid dangerous climate change has become obvious. This reality acutely necessitates the development of innovative sets of policies to spur the deployment of novel CO2 removals, an urgency that is further underlined by the long lead time for many novel removal methods. Disregarding the potential of novel removals is incommensurate with the scale of the challenge of achieving EU’s commitment to reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. We argue that the current policy framework neither provides Union-wide economic incentives for novel CO2 removals, nor does it encourage EU Member States to develop national policy incentives. Our proposed solutions includes incentivizing removals through a conditional integration into the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS), expanding the portfolio of removal methods in the Land-Use, Land-Use Change and Forestry (LULUCF) Regulation, and to manage anticipations regarding which residual emissions that need to be counterbalanced by removals.     Authors: Weissenböck, Stephan;

    This study investigates the presence of water vapor plumes in the region south of Enceladus, a moon in the Saturnian system, through observations conducted by the James Webb Space Telescope. Enceladus is believed to harbor a subsurface ocean or localized water reservoir that gives rise to water geysers, expelling vapor into its tenuous atmosphere and outer space. On the 9th of November 2022, the James Webb Space Telescope made its first observations of the satellite using its Near-Infrared Spectrograph. The instrument's high sensitivity and spectral resolution offer the potential to measure these Enceladus' water vapor plumes, providing an opportunity to study this feature from a telescope located near Earth. However, it remains uncertain whether the obtained results are consistent with previous missions or if the instrument is even capable of conducting detailed examinations of the plumes. Hence, the primary objective of this research is to gain insights into the methodology of conducting scientific investigations of Enceladus and to understand the available data. More specifically, the aim is to verify the presence of the moon's water vapor plumes through a comprehensive analysis of the obtained data. The approach involves deriving spectral maps and extracting residual spectra that are used for comparisons with a reference spectrum entailing known water vapor emission features. The results reveal distinct emission peaks in the extracted spectra that closely resemble the features of water vapor. Additionally, the calculated column density of 6.25 - 8.25E+14 cm-2 over a region of 8.16E+07 km2 closely aligns with observations from the Herschel Space Observatory and Cassini mission. This outcome strongly supports the hypothesis that water vapor plumes are present in the area south of Enceladus, verifying the feasibility of using the James Webb Space Telescope for detecting and studying the characteristics of Enceladus' plumes. Denna studie utforskar Enceladus' vattenplymer, en måne i Saturnussystemet, genom observationer utförda av James Webb Space Telescope. Det antas att Enceladus har en underjordisk ocean eller en lokaliserad vattenreservoar som ger upphov till vattengejsrar som sprutar ut ånga i dess tunna atmosfär och rymden. Den 9:e november 2022 genomförde James Webb-rymdteleskopet sina första observationer av satelliten med hjälp av sin nära-infraröda spektrograf. Instrumentets höga känslighet och spektrala upplösning erbjuder möjligheten att mäta Enceladus vattenplymer och därigenom möjliggöra studier av denna egenskap från ett teleskop beläget nära jorden. Det är emellertid fortfarande osäkert om de erhållna resultaten är förenliga med tidigare uppdrag eller om instrumentet ens är kapabelt att genomföra detaljerade undersökningar av plymer. Det primära syftet med denna forskning är att få insikt i metodologin för att utföra vetenskapliga undersökningar av Enceladus och att förstå den tillgängliga datan. Mer specifikt är målet att verifiera närvaron av vattenånga i månens plymer genom en omfattande analys av den insamlade datan. Metoden innefattar framställning av spektrala kartor och extrahering av restspektra. Därefter görs jämförelser mellan de extraherade spektrana och ett referensspektrum med kända emissionslinjer för vattenånga. Resultaten visar tydliga emissionspektrum i de extraherade spektrana som starkt liknar egenskaperna hos vattenånga. Dessutom stämmer den beräknade kolumn densiteten på 6.25 - 8.25E+14 cm-2 över ett område på 8,16E+07 km2 väl överens med observationer från Herschel Space Observatory och Cassini-uppdraget. Denna slutsats stöder starkt hypotesen att vattenånga finns i Enceladus' plymer och bekräftar möjligheten att använda James Webb Space Telescope för att detektera och studera egenskaperna hos Enceladus' plymer.

    The purpose of this project is to simulate the detection of γ-ray spectra emitted by radon isotopes and their daughters. This is done as a contribution to the development of radiation detectors to be used in a research project investigating the possibility of using increased amounts of the radioactive gas radon as an earthquake precursor. Before the onset of an earthquake, microcracks are formed in the surrounding stone structures due to stress, releasing greater than usual amounts of radon gas contained within the rock pores. A way of predicting an upcoming earthquake would then be to place radiation detectors in areas with high seismicity in order to measure possible changes. This could be done in soil, groundwater (via springs, wells, and boreholes), or air. In this project, we aim to understand how measurements in groundwater would differ from ones in air, and how to best make use of the spectra as seen in water. This was done by simulating a scenario in which a scintillator detector, made of cesium iodide, is placed in each media and then assessing the resulting γ-ray spectra.

    Denna studie har syftet att undersöka sambandet mellan luftföroreningar och olika fordonsvariabler, såsom årsmodell, bränsletyp och fordonstyp, på Hornsgatan i Stockholm. Studien avser att besvara vilka faktorer som har störst inverkan på luftkvaliteten. Utförandet baseras på maskininlärningsalgoritmerna Random Forest och Support Vector Regression, vilka jämförs utifrån R^2 och RMSE. Modellerna skapade med Random Forest överträffar Support Vector Regression för de olika luftföroreningarna. Den modell som presterade bäst var modellen för kolmonoxid vilken hade ett R^2-värde på 99.7%. Den modell som gav prediktioner med lägst R^2-värde, 68.4%, var modellen för kvävedioxid. Överlag var resultaten goda i relation till tidigare studier. Utifrån modellerna diskuteras variablers inverkan och olika åtgärder som kan införas i Stockholm Stad och på Hornsgatan för att förbättra luftkvaliteten. This study aims to investigate the relationship between multiple air pollution and different vehicle variables, such as vehicle year, fuel type and vehicle type, on Hornsgatan in Stockholm. The study intends to answer which factors have the greatest impact on air quality. The implementation is based on the two machine learning algorithms Random Forest and Support Vector Regression, which are compared based on R^2 and RMSE. The models created with Random Forest outperform Support Vector Regression for the various air pollutants. The best performing model was the carbon monoxide model which had an R^2-value of 99.7%. The model that gave predictions with the lowest R^2-value, 68.4%, was the model for nitrogen dioxide. Overall, the results were good in relation to previous studies. With regards to these models, the impact of variables and different measures that can be introduced in the City of Stockholm and on Hornsgatan to improve air quality are discussed.

    Studies indicate that incorporating light rhythms have the potential to generate an atmosphere of curiosity to further explore a space. In lighting design, we can describe rhythm as the ‘flow of light’ as the repetition of shadow, shading and highlight patterns of an illuminated three-dimensional surface that we experience in space when we walk through it. To further investigate this topic, a survey was conducted in a computer-generated museum setting to examine how rhythmical light scenarios of both artificial and natural light can create dynamic atmospheres so that they influence the spatial exploration. For this purpose, scenarios of two categories were made by relative darkness in order to create “mystery” and brightness for ‘focal glow’. Each scenario included the incorporation of daylight conditions, encompassing both morning and evening settings. The experiment revealed a preference for the "mystery" scenarios and the evening conditions of both “mystery” and the “focal glow” scenarios. Nonetheless, it is advisable to conduct similar experiments in real-life settings to attain more substantial results and minimize potential survey bias.

    Från bruksort till BRUKA, med kalkbrottet som gemensam nämnare. Stora Vika har historiskt bestått av en symbiotisk relation mellan ortens tre ”ben”: kalkbrottet, cementindustrin och bostadsområdet. Idag präglas orten av att kopplingen mellan dessa tre element gått förlorad. Visionen med BRUKA är att väcka liv i platsens historiska koppling mellan människa och industri, med kalken som “cementerande” element. Till skillnad från bruk - ett substantiv med fokus på maskin och industri så är BRUKA ett imperativ: en mänsklig handling, en plats för folket att göra till sin. BRUKA förvaltar Stora Vikas arv av att bruka platsens unika råvara, kalken, men istället för den historiska produkten cement är kalken i BRUKA en källa till kunskap för geologiska forskare. BRUKA gjuter nytt liv i Stora Vika bygd i form av arbetstillfällen, aktiviteter samt ekonomiskt tillskott för att stötta upp andra insatser i närområdet och i kommunen i stort. BRUKA visar vikten av att luckra upp gränser och göra bruk av mötet mellan människa och natur. BRUKA sätter återigen ortens ”grande dame”, den unika urkalkstenen, i förgrunden, och låter den bli en generator för arbetstillfällen, kunskapsproduktion, kunskapsdelning och bildning, kreativt skapande och lärande. From the industrial village to BRUKA, the limestone quarry serves as a common denominator. Stora Vika has always had a symbiotic relationship between its three "legs": the lime quarry, the cement industry, and the residential area. Today, the town is distinguished by the fact that the connection between these three elements has been lost. The aim of BRUKA is to revive the site's historical link between man and industry, using lime as the "cementing" element. Unlike "bruk", the Swedish term for "industry" focused on machinery and production, BRUKA is an imperative: a human action. BRUKA honors Stora Vika's tradition of using the site's unique raw material, limestone, but instead of being turned into concrete, the lime in BRUKA serves as a source of knowledge for geological researchers. BRUKA breathes new life into the Stora Vika village through jobs, events, and financial contributions to other community and governmental projects. BRUKA demonstrates the necessity of bridging boundaries and leveraging the combined power of man and environment. BRUKA brings the local "grande dame," the unique primordial limestone, back into the spotlight and enables it to become a generator of jobs, information production, knowledge exchange and education, creativity and learning.

    [ES] Las pistas de hielo son edificios comerciales que consumen mucha energía, con un consumo medio anual de 1,000 MWh, la mayor parte de la cual se utiliza para cubrir las demandas simultáneas de calefacción y refrigeración. El objetivo de esta tesis es encontrar el sistema energético más eficiente para las pistas de hielo evaluando diferentes modificaciones del sistema y refrigerantes. Se ha realizado un análisis comparativo de los sistemas energéticos de amoníaco, CO2 y propano basado en una pista de hielo representativa de los climas nórdicos. Una pista de hielo de amoníaco integrada tradicional consume unos 340 MWh al año para cubrir las demandas térmicas. Las medidas de eficiencia energética más prometedoras para el amoníaco son el uso de aqua amoníaco como fluido secundario y la utilización de una bomba de calor auxiliar para ayudar a cubrir las demandas de calefacción. Gracias a estas medidas, se puede conseguir un ahorro energético del 12.9%. Un sistema de CO2 transcrítico de última generación que utiliza compresión paralela consume aproximadamente un 42.6% menos de energía que un sistema de amoníaco convencional, lo que lo convierte en la solución más eficiente desde el punto de vista energético para pistas de hielo con un SPF de 7.5. El buen rendimiento está ligado en gran medida a la posibilidad de operar los sistemas de CO2 como sistemas directos, eliminando la necesidad de transferencia indirecta de calor y minimizando el consumo de energía de los equipos auxiliares. El propano, que aún no se ha investigado como refrigerante en pistas de hielo, se evaluó y comparó con el amoníaco y el CO2. Un sistema moderno integrado de propano que utiliza compresión paralela y una bomba de calor auxiliar es más eficiente energéticamente que un sistema tradicional de amoníaco, pero requiere más energía que los sistemas modernos de amoníaco o CO2. El propano demostró ser viable y representa una posible solución alternativa en las pistas de hielo. La recuperación del calor residual es beneficiosa en todos los sistemas y debería ser una característica clave en los sistemas energéticos de las pistas de hielo. Todos los sistemas utilizan refrigerantes respetuosos con el medio ambiente y su impacto ambiental es casi exclusivamente indirecto y causado por el consumo de electricidad. [EN] Ice rinks are highly energy-intensive commercial buildings with an average annual energy consumption of 1,000 MWh, most of it being used to cover the simultaneous heating and cooling demands. The aim of this thesis is to find the most energy efficient energy system for ice rinks by evaluating different system modifications and refrigerants. A comparative analysis of ammonia, CO2 and propane energy systems based on a representative ice rink for northern climates has been conducted. A traditional integrated ammonia ice rink consumes about 340 MWh per year to cover the thermal demands. The most promising energy efficiency measures for ammonia are using aqua ammonia as the secondary fluid and using an auxiliary heat pump to aid with covering heating demands. Thanks to these measures, energy savings of 12.9% can be achieved. A state-of-the-art trans-critical CO2 system using parallel compression consumes approximately 42.6% less energy than a conventional ammonia system, making it the most energy efficient solution for ice rinks with an SPF of 7.5. The good performance is largely linked to the possibility of operating CO2 systems as direct systems, eliminating the need for indirect heat transfer and minimizing auxiliary equipment energy consumption. Propane, which has not been investigated as a refrigerant in ice rinks yet, was evaluated and compared against ammonia and CO2. A modern integrated propane system using parallel compression and an auxiliary heat pump is more energy efficient than a traditional ammonia system but requires more energy than modern ammonia or CO2 systems. Propane proved to be feasible and represents a potential alternative solution in ice rinks. Waste heat recovery is beneficial in every system and should be a key feature in ice rink energy systems. All systems use environmentally friendly refrigerants and their environmental impact is almost exclusively indirect and caused by electricity consumption.

    Authors: Teurnberg, Ellinor;

    Denna studie har syftet att undersöka sambandet mellan luftföroreningar och olika fordonsvariabler, såsom årsmodell, bränsletyp och fordonstyp, på Hornsgatan i Stockholm. Studien avser att besvara vilka faktorer som har störst inverkan på luftkvaliteten. Utförandet baseras på maskininlärningsalgoritmerna Random Forest och Support Vector Regression, vilka jämförs utifrån R² och RMSE. Modellerna skapade med Random Forest överträffar Support Vector Regression för de olika luftföroreningarna. Den modell som presterade bäst var modellen för kolmonoxid vilken hade ett R²-värde på 99.7%. Den modell som gav prediktioner med lägst R²-värde, 68.4%, var modellen för kvävedioxid. The implementation is based on the two machine learning algorithms Random Forest and Support Vector Regression, which are compared based on R² and RMSE. The models created with Random Forest outperform Support Vector Regression for the various air pollutants. The best performing model was the carbon monoxide model which had an R²-value of 99.7%. The model that gave predictions with the lowest R²-value, 68.4%, was the model for nitrogen dioxide. Overall, the results were good in relation to previous studies. With regards to these models, the impact of variables and different measures that can be introduced in the City of Stockholm and on Hornsgatan to improve air quality are discussed.

    Poor indoor air quality can produce headaches, fatigue, as well as respiratory and vision issues. Sonification might provide a way to increase people’s awareness of their surrounding’s air quality and activate preventive actions. In this paper we present the prototype of a sonically augmented interactive office gadget that provides information about air quality when a person interacts with it. We report the results of a user study comparing four sonification models (Abstract, Musical, Concrete and Cultural Models). Results show that the Abstract, Musical and Concrete models are equally effective in displaying air quality levels, while the Cultural model performs less well. Additionally, the Concrete and Musical models are preferred over the Abstract and Cultural models as their sonic qualities are considered more appropriate for what they aim to represent. As a result of this study, we aim to further develop the Musical and Concrete models as well as a Hybrid Model that combines the main characteristics of both. Sound for Energy QC 20220607 SonicFunc

    Authors: GÜRSAC, PAULINA;

    This project aimed to investigate various areas of improvement in crushing equipment for a digital service, from a sustainability perspective. The results were to be presented in a list where each point corresponds to an area with potential to be implemented in the digital assistance tool. In addition, the sustainability aspect of the items on the list would be presented through a rough estimate of the savings that could be made, either in the form of energy or as emissions. Delimitations were made, to only look at the stationary units, mainly the cone crusher, and to focus on CO2 emissions and energy consumption. A benchmarking was made for companies in similar and in other industries. The method for the project was implemented qualitatively with an inductive approach. Interviews were conducted with a number of employees within the company, all with different areas of responsibility, with the aim of gaining an insight into the company and the entire industry as well as to get an overview of which areas a further investigation could be considered in. Then more interviews were conducted with the same people, to shape and refine these areas into items on the list. The list was prioritized based on whether and when in time an implementation in the digital assistance tool would be possible. The result was a list of 14 points where the first 3 are undeniably low-hanging fruits that could be implemented immediately, the 3 points are; Enhanced visualization of current data, Notice of maintenance, Guidance - Troubleshooting Detta projekt gick ut på att undersöka olika förbättringsområden inom krossutrustning för en digital tjänst, ur ett hållbarhetsperspektiv. Resultaten skulle presenteras i en lista där varje punkt motsvarar ett område med potential att implementeras i det digitala hjälpverktyget. Dessutom skulle hållbarhetsaspekten av punkterna på listan presenteras genom en grov uppskattning av de besparingar som kunde göras, antingen i form av energi eller som utsläpp. Avgränsningar gjordes, att bara titta på de stationära enheterna, främst konkrossen samt att fokusera på CO2 utsläpp och energiförbrukning. En benchmarking gjordes för företag i liknande och i andra industrier. Metoden för projektet genomfördes kvalitativt med ett induktivt tillvägagångssätt. Intervjuer gjordes med ett flertal anställda i företaget, alla med olika ansvarsområden, med syftet att få en insikt i företaget och hela branschen men även för att få en överblick över vilka områden en ytterligare utredning kunde övervägas inom. Sedan gjordes fler intervjuer med samma personer för att forma och finslipa dessa områden till punkter på listan. Listan prioriterades utifrån om och när i tiden en implementation i det digitala verktyget skulle vara möjlig. Resultatet blev en lista med 14 punkter där de 3 första onekligen är lågt hängande frukter som skulle kunna implementeras omgående, de 3 punkterna är; Förbättrad visualisering av aktuell data, Besked om underhåll, Vägledning - Felsökning.

    In comparison to its emissions reductions policy, the European Union’s (EU) policy for achieving carbon dioxide (CO2) removals is underdeveloped. Only in forestry and land usemanagement does current EU law allow its Member States to use removals to comply with their climate policy commitments. This excludes the potential role that novel removals could play for effectively and efficiently addressing climate policy objectives. Novel removals with significantEuropean potential include bioenergy with carbon capture and storage, biochar, enhanced weathering, marine removal options like alkalinity enhancement, and direct air carbon captureand storage.Emissions reductions are crucial to mitigating climate change. However, in the past decade, the world community’s failure to reduce emissions at a sufficient speed to avoid dangerous climate change has become obvious. This reality acutely necessitates the development of innovative sets of policies to spur the deployment of novel CO2 removals, an urgency that is further underlined by the long lead time for many novel removal methods. Disregarding the potential of novel removals is incommensurate with the scale of the challenge of achieving EU’s commitment to reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. We argue that the current policy framework neither provides Union-wide economic incentives for novel CO2 removals, nor does it encourage EU Member States to develop national policy incentives. Our proposed solutions includes incentivizing removals through a conditional integration into the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS), expanding the portfolio of removal methods in the Land-Use, Land-Use Change and Forestry (LULUCF) Regulation, and to manage anticipations regarding which residual emissions that need to be counterbalanced by removals.

This study aims to investigate the relationship between multiple air pollution and different vehicle variables, such as vehicle year, fuel type and vehicle type, on Hornsgatan in Stockholm. The study intends to answer which factors have the greatest impact on air quality.

    Authors: GÜRSAC, PAULINA;
