The tutorial provides a detailed method for applying LM to remote sensing data in archaeological studies using QGIS and Fragstats. It begins with instructions on installing these essential tools and proceeds to guide users through visualizing both classification and original images in QGIS. The tutorial then moves to image filtering in QGIS. This refined data is then imported into Fragstats for in-depth analysis using nine metrics at class and landscape levels. The tutorial exemplifies how the results can be interpreted, helping users understand each metric's significance in an archaeological context. Metrics like the Landscape Patch Index and Edge Density are explained in terms of their utility for understanding distribution density of archaeological sites, settlement patterns, and interactions between land uses in historical settings. Additionally, the tutorial offers a background on the importance of LM in landscape ecology, stressing their role in assessing biodiversity, habitat fragmentation, and human activity impacts. It also touches on the innovative application of these metrics in archaeology, highlighting the potential to significantly enhance understanding of anthropological and historical landscapes. Overall, this tutorial aims to be a resource for archaeologists and researchers, combining practical analytical steps with theoretical insights. It ensures users not only execute the analysis correctly but also comprehend the implications of their findings in archaeological research.

The methodological steps might vary depending on the satellite sensor. The processing steps described in this tutorial are developed and showcased for two satellite types that are actively run by the European Space Agency (ESA), i.e., Sentinel-1 (SAR) and Sentinel-2 (MSI). The tutorial makes use of ESA’s Sentinels Application Platform SNAP toolbox. All data and software are free of charge. After completing this tutorial, the user should be able to find, download and pre-process spaceborne SAR and multispectral data from two popular Earth Observation satellites. The user should have gained some basic understanding of the steps needed to prepare satellite data for analysis, have attained some familiarity with SNAP and should be able to produce a GeotTIFF image that can further be used for landscape archaeological applications, e.g., visual image interpretation, image classification, derivation of a variety of indices or change detection.

OBIA involves that pixels are aggregated into groups (segments) with similar spectral or spatial properties. Instead of classifying each pixel individually, the segments are used for classification instead. Apart from image pre-processing and image processing steps alongside accuracy assessment that are described in the tutorials Satellite image processing and Pixel-based supervised image classification, this tutorial focuses on image segmentation and classification. The tutorial is based on remotely sensed data that was created in the tutorial Satellite image processing. After completing this tutorial, the user should be able to derive land use/land cover (LULC) information from satellite data using an OBIA approach. The tutorial is based on straight-forward user-friendly solutions using free and open-source software (QGIS and ORFEO ToolBox).
