"How DNA Has Changed Our Story of the Black Death" was a lecture presented (virtually) at the University of Cyprus on 7 February 2024, at the invitation of Professor Dionysios Stathakopoulos. The lecture actually covered the entire global history of Yersinia pestis (the bacterium that causes plague), drawing on the latest paleogenetics work (including Sikora et al. 2023 (bioRxiv), Krause-Kyora et al. 2023 [Research Square], and Jiang et al. 2024 [Research Square]). The core of the argument was that a multidisciplinary approach to plague's history must also recognize the ways different disciplines can, and cannot, document time. The narrative of Y. pestis' evolutionary history is expanding by millennia, and the phenomena we see in medieval records may be evidence of these longer histories. But we need to read those medieval sources with a more nuanced eye. The deposit here in Humanities Commons is meant to preserve an archival copy of the presentation. This presentation will discuss the WARLUX project, a crowdsourcing campaign aimed at collecting and preserving personal war letters and documents from Luxembourg during WWII. The presentation will cover the goals of the project, the participatory aspect of working with volunteers and participants, as well as the post-processing and implementation of the collected data. The presentation will also highlight the challenges and ethical considerations. Additionally, the benefits of the project for both researchers and participants will be explored, including obtaining unique information and recognition for personal stories.

What happens when AI goes to theatre with human audiences? Generative AI's natural-language conversational interface has frequently been cast as an anthropomorphic interface. In performance, digital screen as interface has evolved from a vehicle for dramatic messages to a meaning-making agent with an anthropomorphic presence. While the tendency to anthropomorphize this technology is problematic, ChatGPT can be seen as a ghost of the publics, a synthetic version of the publics, or a shadow public. In her keynote lecture, "Screen as Anthropomorphic Interface: Remediated Performance and Generative Artificial Intelligence," Alexa Alice Joubin argued that screens are a site where cultural and performative meanings are generated and negotiated. Guest lecture at the University of Warsaw From Queen Anne to Queen Victoria Reading Group, 11 May 2023. Historical dramas can be presented in many different ways in film and television, with the mode in which the genre of historical drama is presented influencing how that drama is understood. Thus, the same events portrayed in a comic mode will tend to be received differently than if presented in a tragic mode. Historical dramas take on many modes: heritage dramas, romances, swashbucklers, political thrillers, crime dramas, but this lecture will focus on the Gothic mode. The Gothic mode emphasises darkness and trauma in its aesthetics and narrative; the lecture will particularly concentrate on the ways that some of these Gothic historical TV dramas use a combination of style, anachronism and theme to emphasise how historical traumas remain relevant to and recur in the present. In doing so, they can destabilise ideas of national or cultural identity, and of dominant historical narratives, particularly challenging the structures of power such as capitalism, imperialism and sexism, and the way that historical narratives are constructed in order to support dominant histories and power structures.

Natural language processing (NLP) for detecting lexical semantic change and linguistic linked open data (LLOD) are two areas of research that have shown promising results in the latest years. However, their potential of being considered together for analysing and representing semantic change from a humanistic perspective needs further study and development. The talk will present an overview of theoretical aspects, NLP techniques and LLOD formalisms intended to this purpose, and will focus on a project developed as a humanities use case within the COST Action “Nexus Linguarum - European network for Web-centred linguistic data science.” The discussion will include preliminary thoughts on the conception of a system that combines dictionary information with corpus evidence, and provides multilingual diachronic ontologies for humanities research.
