    International audience; Quicklisp is a library manager working with your existing Common Lisp implementation to download and install around 2000 libraries, from a central archive. Quickref, an application itself written in Common Lisp, generates, automatically and by introspection, a technical documentation for every library in Quicklisp, and produces a website for this documentation. In this paper, we present a corpus processing and analysis pipeline for Quickref. This pipeline consists of a set of natural language processing blocks allowing us to analyze Quicklisp libraries, based on natural language contents sources such as README files, docstrings, or symbol names. The ultimate purpose of this pipeline is the generation of a keyword index for Quickref, although other applications such as word clouds or topic analysis are also envisioned. What changes when research on ancient manuscripts occurs in a VRE, especially in early Jewish and Christian literature, New Testament, and Classical works? Does it matter if we undertake research in a digital medium rather than in a traditional print context? How does working with digital images and born-digital data intersect with the traditional print mentalities that have until recently defined philological research? Because VREs offer wide and usually free access to diverse information regardless of one’s geographical location, they continue to have an outsized influence on the research landscape of the humanities in more complex ways.

    In this study an effort is made to provide links between the world of physics (theoretical) model about energy transfer with the world of objects and events. Taking into account a holistic approach on energy based on conservation of energy principle and a semiotic approach based on the multimodality of teaching, it was investigated whether a ‘no contact, contact plus change’ pattern can signify in the material world the separation and the interaction between the physical systems and the changes within the systems. An analysis of a teacher’s actions from a physics lesson and a physics textbook concerning mechanical work and heat as mechanisms of energy transfer was made, identifying the no contact, contact + change pattern in speech, written text, bodily acts and inscriptions. It was shown that this semiotic schema has the potential to transfer the physics model about mechanical work and heat to the world of objects and events avoiding ambiguities that create conceptual blending between transformation and transfer of energy. In addition, illustrating the idea of change by movement for mechanical work (position change) and by haptic contact or different colours for heat (temperature change) might be of great importance in teaching activities about transfer of energy.     International audience; This article analyzes the presentation of the Second World War in the multimedia “history parks” of the Russian educational project “Russia My History.” In these exhibition complexes, modern digital technologies offer visitors a “revolutionary” way to discover Russian history. The article first explores the history and conception of the Russia My History project, as a pedagogical tool, a digital museum, a historical narrative, and a response to current memory policies. Next, I focus on the exhibition dedicated to the Second World War (specifically, on its technical, visual, structural, lexical, and historical aspects) and assess the impact of the digitalization and commodification of history on the traditionally rigid official Russian memory of the war. I attempt to show that instead of exploiting digital technologies to develop new approaches to the history of the war, the exhibition neglects the potential of multimedia and provides a narrative close to the one used in Soviet and post-Soviet textbooks.

    International audience; In the archaeological literature, the Bell Beaker tradition is usually suggested as a male and warrior "ideology", especially through grave goods. However, it does not reflect a monolithic cultural ‘identity’ but rather a real blended cultural practice reconciled at regional levels through ongoing interactions between collective and individual symbolic concepts. In Central Iberia, recent studies of the Bell Beaker funerary contexts have revealed recurrent practices, such the use of artificial caves and hypogea and the extraction and movement of human bones, as in the well-known Camino de las Yeseras site (San Fernando de Henares, Madrid). Our aim is to shed new light on the distribution of Bell Beaker ceramics in funerary structures through "Social Network Analysis". For example, are we able to establish relationships between the decoration of Bell Beaker vases and the individuals buried in single or collective graves, using similarity indexes between ceramics and network representations? Is the presence of some decorations linked to age or gender? Do stylistic identities have any relation to DNA heritage? The degree of similarity between the decorations executed on the vases from single graves and those deposited in collective graves could help to highlight specific burial categories or personae involved in the spread of particular collective decorative patterns. Network analysis tools can lead us to visualise these intra-site interactions, and gain greater understanding of the social context and the diversity of burial dynamics. The vessels analysed belong to eight Bell beaker tombs documented in Camino de las Yeseras during the second half of the third millennium BCE. In relation to the topic of this paper, we want to highlight the presumed impact of intra-site relations that Bell Beaker customs and funerary rituals could have on the consolidation of social inequalities among the first metallurgical societies of the Central Iberian Peninsula.

    This talk explores the marshes of the north shore of the Lower Loire. These marshes, at the interface between fresh and salt water, have been the subject of an in-depth ethnographic survey for five years by a multidisciplinary team of researchers. Constituting environmental commons, managed and used by local communities, these marshes are facing many changes. These mutations, with multiple origins, disturb the balance between humans and non-humans. Adaptive strategies are emerging to protect resources, uses and heritage, in an attempt to continue the centuries-old perpetuation of certain traditions.After a methodological and conceptual framework, this paper presents what emerges from this field, a real complex social-ecological system of interfaces, and to decipher the processes at work between Nature and Culture. Navigating from traditional ecological knowledge to heritage through the fuzzy sub-category of intangible cultural heritage, this territory is thus a veritable laboratory of the changes at work within European wetlands. The ethnographic approach allows a long-term immersion in the community, and the crossover study between social and natural sciences allows a conceptual cooling, able to propose an objective hindsight of analysis.     Online publication: https://chs.harvard.edu/classics18-clivaz-monier-barda The first part of this article investigates the impact of the digital revolution on the landscape of the history of Greek New Testament (NT) editions. Comparing digital culture to the beginning of print culture helps us to understand it by focusing on similarities and differences. The digital Greek New Testament can be evaluated in comparison to the Novum Testamentum omne, which is the title Erasmus gave to the first printed edition of the Greek New Testament, published in 1516. This chapter of the history of editing highlights the ways in which a new writing material reshapes textuality, ideas, concepts, and technology. The second and third parts of this article, based on the example of the SNSF five-year project MARK16, argue that similar challenges are present today in the development of digital New Testament textual criticism (NTTC). After a general presentation of the MARK16 virtual research environment (VRE, 2.1), the article will focus on the MARK16 manuscript room (henceforth, MR) prepared in collaboration with the New Testament Virtual Manuscript Room (NTVMR) produced by the INTF in Münster. Part 2.2 will highlight the capacity of a digital MR to reconfigure our relationship to NT textuality. This process requires negotiations between the actors who produce textuality and progressively reshapes the usual perception of ancient Christian texts categories (2.2). Similar to the case of the making of the first NT printed edition, technical and other fundamental challenges are present in the transcription and encoding of Mark 16 folios, as part 3 will demonstrate.

    In the latest years, the healthcare domain has seen an increasing interest in the definition of intelligent systems to support clinicians in their everyday tasks and activities. Among others, this includes novel systems for the field of Evidence-based Medicine. The latter relies on the principle of critically appraising medical evidence and combining high quality evidence with the individual clinical experience of the practitioner with respect to the circumstances of a patient to achieve the best possible outcome. Hence, most of the proposed intelligent systems aim either at extracting information concerning the quality of evidence from clinical trials, clinical guidelines, or electronic health records, or assist in the decision making processes, based on reasoning frameworks. The work in this thesis goes beyond the state-of-the-art of currently proposed information extraction systems. It employs Argument Mining methods to extract and classify argumentative components (i.e., evidence and claims of a clinical trial) and their relations (i.e., support, attack). An Argument Mining pipeline is proposed and further enhanced to integrate additional information inspired by prevalent biomedical frameworks for the analysis of clinical trials. These extensions comprise the detection of PICO elements and an outcome analysis module to identify and classify the effects (i.e., improved, increased, decreased, no difference, no occurrence) of an intervention on the outcome of the trial. In this context, a dataset, composed of 660 Randomized Controlled Trial abstracts from the MEDLINE database, was annotated, leading to a labeled dataset with 4198 argument components, 2601 argument relations, and 3351 outcomes on five different diseases (i.e., neoplasm, glaucoma, hepatitis, diabetes, hypertension). Various Machine Learning approaches ranging from feature-based SVMs to recent neural architectures have been experimented with, where deep bidirectional transformers obtain a macro F1-score of .87 for argument component detection and .68 for argument relation prediction, outperforming current state-of-the-art Argument Mining systems. Additionally, a Proof-of-Concept system, called ACTA, was developed to demonstrate the practical use of the developed argument-based approach to analyse clinical trials. This demo system was further integrated in the context of the Covid-on-the-Web project to create rich and actionable Linked Data about the Covid-19.; Ces dernières années, le domaine de la e-santé a vu un intérêt croissant pour la définition de systèmes intelligents ayant le but d’accompagner les cliniciens dans leurs tâches et leurs activités quotidiennes. D’ailleurs, cela inclut de nouveaux systèmes pour le domaine de la médecine basée sur les preuves. Ce dernier repose sur le principe de l’évaluation critique des preuves médicales et de la combinaison de ces preuves de haute qualité avec l’expérience clinique individuelle du praticien par rapport à la situation d’un patient pour obtenir le meilleur résultat possible. La plupart des systèmes intelligents proposés visent soit à extraire des informations sur la qualité des preuves issues des essais cliniques, de directives cliniques ou des dossiers de santé électroniques, soit à aider dans les processus de prise de décision, sur la base de cadres de raisonnement. Le travail de cette thèse va au-delà de l’état de l’art des systèmes d’extraction d’informations actuellement proposés dans ce contexte. Il utilise des méthodes d’analyse d’arguments pour extraire et classifier les composants d’argumentation (c’est-à-dire les preuves et les conclusions d’un essai clinique) et leurs relations (c’est-à-dire le support et l’attaque). Un cadre de fouille d’arguments (Argument Mining) est proposé et amélioré pour intégrer des informations supplémentaires inspirées par les cadres biomédicaux courants pour l’analyse des essais cliniques. Ces extensions comprennent la détection des éléments PICO et un module d’analyse des résultats pour identifier et classer les effets (c’est- à-dire améliorés, augmentés, diminués, pas de différence, pas d’occurrence) d’une intervention sur le résultat de l’essai. Dans ce contexte, un jeu de données, composé de 660 résumés d’essais cliniques dans la base de données MEDLINE, a été annoté, en résultant dans le construction d’un jeu de données étiquetées qui inclut 4198 composants d’argumentation, 2601 relations d’argumentation et 3351 résultats d’intervention sur cinq maladies différentes (néoplasme, glaucome, hépatite, dia- bète, hypertension). Diverses approches d’apprentissage automatique et profond allant des SVM aux architectures récentes basées sur les réseaux de neurones ont été expérimentées, obtenant un F1 macro de 0,87 pour la détection de composants d’argumentation et de 0,68 pour la prédiction des relation d’argumentation, surpassant les résultats obtenus pas les systèmes de detection d’arguments dans l’état de l’art. De plus, une demo d’un système, appelé ACTA, a été développée pour démontrer l’utilisation pratique de l’approche basée sur les arguments développée pour analyser les essais cliniques. Ce système de démonstration a été intégré dans le contexte du projet Covid-on-the-Web pour créer des données liées riches et exploitables sur le Covid-19.

    International audience; Quicklisp is a library manager working with your existing Common Lisp implementation to download and install around 2000 libraries, from a central archive. Quickref, an application itself written in Common Lisp, generates, automatically and by introspection, a technical documentation for every library in Quicklisp, and produces a website for this documentation. In this paper, we present a corpus processing and analysis pipeline for Quickref. This pipeline consists of a set of natural language processing blocks allowing us to analyze Quicklisp libraries, based on natural language contents sources such as README files, docstrings, or symbol names. The ultimate purpose of this pipeline is the generation of a keyword index for Quickref, although other applications such as word clouds or topic analysis are also envisioned. What changes when research on ancient manuscripts occurs in a VRE, especially in early Jewish and Christian literature, New Testament, and Classical works? Does it matter if we undertake research in a digital medium rather than in a traditional print context? How does working with digital images and born-digital data intersect with the traditional print mentalities that have until recently defined philological research? Because VREs offer wide and usually free access to diverse information regardless of one’s geographical location, they continue to have an outsized influence on the research landscape of the humanities in more complex ways.

    In this study an effort is made to provide links between the world of physics (theoretical) model about energy transfer with the world of objects and events. Taking into account a holistic approach on energy based on conservation of energy principle and a semiotic approach based on the multimodality of teaching, it was investigated whether a ‘no contact, contact plus change’ pattern can signify in the material world the separation and the interaction between the physical systems and the changes within the systems. An analysis of a teacher’s actions from a physics lesson and a physics textbook concerning mechanical work and heat as mechanisms of energy transfer was made, identifying the no contact, contact + change pattern in speech, written text, bodily acts and inscriptions. It was shown that this semiotic schema has the potential to transfer the physics model about mechanical work and heat to the world of objects and events avoiding ambiguities that create conceptual blending between transformation and transfer of energy. In addition, illustrating the idea of change by movement for mechanical work (position change) and by haptic contact or different colours for heat (temperature change) might be of great importance in teaching activities about transfer of energy.     International audience; This article analyzes the presentation of the Second World War in the multimedia “history parks” of the Russian educational project “Russia My History.” In these exhibition complexes, modern digital technologies offer visitors a “revolutionary” way to discover Russian history. The article first explores the history and conception of the Russia My History project, as a pedagogical tool, a digital museum, a historical narrative, and a response to current memory policies. Next, I focus on the exhibition dedicated to the Second World War (specifically, on its technical, visual, structural, lexical, and historical aspects) and assess the impact of the digitalization and commodification of history on the traditionally rigid official Russian memory of the war. I attempt to show that instead of exploiting digital technologies to develop new approaches to the history of the war, the exhibition neglects the potential of multimedia and provides a narrative close to the one used in Soviet and post-Soviet textbooks.

    International audience; In the archaeological literature, the Bell Beaker tradition is usually suggested as a male and warrior "ideology", especially through grave goods. However, it does not reflect a monolithic cultural ‘identity’ but rather a real blended cultural practice reconciled at regional levels through ongoing interactions between collective and individual symbolic concepts. In Central Iberia, recent studies of the Bell Beaker funerary contexts have revealed recurrent practices, such the use of artificial caves and hypogea and the extraction and movement of human bones, as in the well-known Camino de las Yeseras site (San Fernando de Henares, Madrid). Our aim is to shed new light on the distribution of Bell Beaker ceramics in funerary structures through "Social Network Analysis". For example, are we able to establish relationships between the decoration of Bell Beaker vases and the individuals buried in single or collective graves, using similarity indexes between ceramics and network representations? Is the presence of some decorations linked to age or gender? Do stylistic identities have any relation to DNA heritage? The degree of similarity between the decorations executed on the vases from single graves and those deposited in collective graves could help to highlight specific burial categories or personae involved in the spread of particular collective decorative patterns. Network analysis tools can lead us to visualise these intra-site interactions, and gain greater understanding of the social context and the diversity of burial dynamics. The vessels analysed belong to eight Bell beaker tombs documented in Camino de las Yeseras during the second half of the third millennium BCE. In relation to the topic of this paper, we want to highlight the presumed impact of intra-site relations that Bell Beaker customs and funerary rituals could have on the consolidation of social inequalities among the first metallurgical societies of the Central Iberian Peninsula.

    International audience; In open access: https://classics-at.chs.harvard.edu/classics18-introduction/This introduction presents Classics@ 18 that aims to explore and analyse a methodological turn in ancient studies: the practice of presenting harvested data in ancient manuscripts within virtual research environments (VREs). What changes when research on ancient manuscripts occurs in a VRE, especially in early Jewish and Christian literature, New Testament, and Classical works? Does it matter if we undertake research in a digital medium rather than in a traditional print context? How does working with digital images and born-digital data intersect with the traditional print mentalities that have until recently defined philological research? Because VREs offer wide and usually free access to diverse information regardless of one’s geographical location, they continue to have an outsized influence on the research landscape of the humanities in more complex ways. [1] Most notably, perhaps, is the required emphasis on collaborative forms of research in these contexts, representing a profound change to the usual humanist paradigm that is defined by the Romantic representation of the nineteenth-century lonely scholar. [2] The caricature of the textual scholar as a solitary genius sifting through dusty volumes in medieval university libraries is now surely passé.

    This talk explores the marshes of the north shore of the Lower Loire. These marshes, at the interface between fresh and salt water, have been the subject of an in-depth ethnographic survey for five years by a multidisciplinary team of researchers. Constituting environmental commons, managed and used by local communities, these marshes are facing many changes. These mutations, with multiple origins, disturb the balance between humans and non-humans. Adaptive strategies are emerging to protect resources, uses and heritage, in an attempt to continue the centuries-old perpetuation of certain traditions.After a methodological and conceptual framework, this paper presents what emerges from this field, a real complex social-ecological system of interfaces, and to decipher the processes at work between Nature and Culture. Navigating from traditional ecological knowledge to heritage through the fuzzy sub-category of intangible cultural heritage, this territory is thus a veritable laboratory of the changes at work within European wetlands. The ethnographic approach allows a long-term immersion in the community, and the crossover study between social and natural sciences allows a conceptual cooling, able to propose an objective hindsight of analysis. Comparing digital culture to the beginning of print culture helps us to understand it by focusing on similarities and differences. The digital Greek New Testament can be evaluated in comparison to the Novum Testamentum omne, which is the title Erasmus gave to the first printed edition of the Greek New Testament, published in 1516. This chapter of the history of editing highlights the ways in which a new writing material reshapes textuality, ideas, concepts, and technology. The second and third parts of this article, based on the example of the SNSF five-year project MARK16, argue that similar challenges are present today in the development of digital New Testament textual criticism (NTTC). After a general presentation of the MARK16 virtual research environment (VRE, 2.1), the article will focus on the MARK16 manuscript room (henceforth, MR) prepared in collaboration with the New Testament Virtual Manuscript Room (NTVMR) produced by the INTF in Münster. Part 2.2 will highlight the capacity of a digital MR to reconfigure our relationship to NT textuality. This process requires negotiations between the actors who produce textuality and progressively reshapes the usual perception of ancient Christian texts categories (2.2). Similar to the case of the making of the first NT printed edition, technical and other fundamental challenges are present in the transcription and encoding of Mark 16 folios, as part 3 will demonstrate.

    In the latest years, the healthcare domain has seen an increasing interest in the definition of intelligent systems to support clinicians in their everyday tasks and activities. Among others, this includes novel systems for the field of Evidence-based Medicine. The latter relies on the principle of critically appraising medical evidence and combining high quality evidence with the individual clinical experience of the practitioner with respect to the circumstances of a patient to achieve the best possible outcome. Hence, most of the proposed intelligent systems aim either at extracting information concerning the quality of evidence from clinical trials, clinical guidelines, or electronic health records, or assist in the decision making processes, based on reasoning frameworks. The work in this thesis goes beyond the state-of-the-art of currently proposed information extraction systems. It employs Argument Mining methods to extract and classify argumentative components (i.e., evidence and claims of a clinical trial) and their relations (i.e., support, attack). An Argument Mining pipeline is proposed and further enhanced to integrate additional information inspired by prevalent biomedical frameworks for the analysis of clinical trials. These extensions comprise the detection of PICO elements and an outcome analysis module to identify and classify the effects (i.e., improved, increased, decreased, no difference, no occurrence) of an intervention on the outcome of the trial. In this context, a dataset, composed of 660 Randomized Controlled Trial abstracts from the MEDLINE database, was annotated, leading to a labeled dataset with 4198 argument components, 2601 argument relations, and 3351 outcomes on five different diseases (i.e., neoplasm, glaucoma, hepatitis, diabetes, hypertension). Various Machine Learning approaches ranging from feature-based SVMs to recent neural architectures have been experimented with, where deep bidirectional transformers obtain a macro F1-score of .87 for argument component detection and .68 for argument relation prediction, outperforming current state-of-the-art Argument Mining systems. Additionally, a Proof-of-Concept system, called ACTA, was developed to demonstrate the practical use of the developed argument-based approach to analyse clinical trials. This demo system was further integrated in the context of the Covid-on-the-Web project to create rich and actionable Linked Data about the Covid-19.; Ces dernières années, le domaine de la e-santé a vu un intérêt croissant pour la définition de systèmes intelligents ayant le but d’accompagner les cliniciens dans leurs tâches et leurs activités quotidiennes. D’ailleurs, cela inclut de nouveaux systèmes pour le domaine de la médecine basée sur les preuves. Ce dernier repose sur le principe de l’évaluation critique des preuves médicales et de la combinaison de ces preuves de haute qualité avec l’expérience clinique individuelle du praticien par rapport à la situation d’un patient pour obtenir le meilleur résultat possible. La plupart des systèmes intelligents proposés visent soit à extraire des informations sur la qualité des preuves issues des essais cliniques, de directives cliniques ou des dossiers de santé électroniques, soit à aider dans les processus de prise de décision, sur la base de cadres de raisonnement. Le travail de cette thèse va au-delà de l’état de l’art des systèmes d’extraction d’informations actuellement proposés dans ce contexte. Il utilise des méthodes d’analyse d’arguments pour extraire et classifier les composants d’argumentation (c’est-à-dire les preuves et les conclusions d’un essai clinique) et leurs relations (c’est-à-dire le support et l’attaque). Un cadre de fouille d’arguments (Argument Mining) est proposé et amélioré pour intégrer des informations supplémentaires inspirées par les cadres biomédicaux courants pour l’analyse des essais cliniques. Ces extensions comprennent la détection des éléments PICO et un module d’analyse des résultats pour identifier et classer les effets (c’est- à-dire améliorés, augmentés, diminués, pas de différence, pas d’occurrence) d’une intervention sur le résultat de l’essai. Dans ce contexte, un jeu de données, composé de 660 résumés d’essais cliniques dans la base de données MEDLINE, a été annoté, en résultant dans le construction d’un jeu de données étiquetées qui inclut 4198 composants d’argumentation, 2601 relations d’argumentation et 3351 résultats d’intervention sur cinq maladies différentes (néoplasme, glaucome, hépatite, dia- bète, hypertension). Diverses approches d’apprentissage automatique et profond allant des SVM aux architectures récentes basées sur les réseaux de neurones ont été expérimentées, obtenant un F1 macro de 0,87 pour la détection de composants d’argumentation et de 0,68 pour la prédiction des relation d’argumentation, surpassant les résultats obtenus pas les systèmes de detection d’arguments dans l’état de l’art. De plus, une demo d’un système, appelé ACTA, a été développée pour démontrer l’utilisation pratique de l’approche basée sur les arguments développée pour analyser les essais cliniques. Ce système de démonstration a été intégré dans le contexte du projet Covid-on-the-Web pour créer des données liées riches et exploitables sur le Covid-19.
