    At the University of Vienna’s Department of Classical Archaeology, two PhD projects recently focused on rural life in the Norican and Upper Pannonian “Danube Limes” hinterland. These projects share a common research area and partially incorporate the same archaeological sites. The Roman rural settlement in northern Noricum, which is present-day Lower Austria, has been relatively understudied. To address this gap, the recently completed PhD project “Roman Rural Landscapes in Noricum” by Dominik Hagmann aimed to synthesize all known data on Roman rural settlements within a strictly defined area of study. In parallel, another PhD project titled “Supplying the Roman Landscape,” conducted by Nisa Iduna Kirchengast, seeks to provide insight into the economic relationship between urban and rural areas along the Austrian stretch of the Danube. This artifact-oriented, bioarchaeological investigation centers on the supply of animal products and livestock farming within a clearly defined area of interest. Both studies aim to make a significant and lasting contribution to current research in the northern hinterland of the ancient Roman provinces of Noricum and Upper Pannonia, from various perspectives. They intend to do this through the application of differentiated interdisciplinary approaches inherent to both projects, consisting of (archaeo-)zoological methods and the use of geomatics through digital archaeology. Consequently, this theory-laden paper aims to offer insights into the current state of work, in the spirit of a workshop discussion, based on the jointly analyzed site of Waldling in Upper Austria. In the following, the archaeological site will thus serve as an (experimental) case study to demonstrate the possibilities and limitations of an integrated, context-based (zoo-)archaeological evaluation.

However, the webcast aims to convey that data management should not only be seen as a duty, but is an important and central component of one's own research. The basics of data management will be presented, which ultimately help in achieving sustainably available and FAIR data. Contents: The data life cycle, metadata and documentation, archiving, file formats, folder structure and file naming, versioning, completing and maintaining data management plans.

    No, but the paper argues that Bohr understood his correspondence principle, or at least an aspect of that principle expressed by the notion of rational generalization, as grounded in Hankel's principle of permanence, adapted to new historical and theoretical contexts. This is shown to illuminate some otherwise obscure aspects of Bohr's approach to quantum theory, as well as a seemingly strange criticism against this approach, due to Feyerabend and Bohm. 27 pages

    This paper aims to replicate the Experiment Methodology presented in "Topic Modeling on Podcast Short-Text Metadata". It presents a strategy for categorizing podcasts by topic using their metadata, utilizing the NEiCE model.     Štúdia sa zameriava na analýzu zbierky Helena nosí ľaliu (1935), ktorú treba chápať ako dôležitý medzník v poetike básnika Rudolfa Dilonga – dochádza v nej k poeticko-metodickému obratu smerom ku modernejším umeleckým snahám. Zároveň sa hĺbkovo-motivický základ jeho tvorby nemodernizoval, ale paradoxne práve náboženstvo slúžilo ako energetický zdroj poetickej modernizácie. Hlbšie vniknutie do nej môže poslúžiť ako prínosný základ pre pochopenie celej zbierky, pretože náboženské motívy sú ukotvené v použitých symboloch a zaručujú ich platnosť. Vysoká úroveň symbolizácie je takisto organickou súčasťou avantgardnej poetiky, ktorej cieľom je prerušiť kauzalitu empirickej skutočnosti – odmietajúc dominanciu racionality a vyzdvihujúc rolu práve zmyslového vnímania sa otvoril priestor pre realizáciu Dilongovej túžby po úniku, vytvorením si „šťastnejšej“ alternatívnej reality.V zbierke Helena nosí ľaliu Rudolf Dilong zrealizoval 8 kvetinových (fialka, ľalia, konvalinka, kvet maku, narcis, ďatelina, astra a ruža) a 8 farebných symbolov (biela, zelená, červená príp. ružová, zlatá, strieborná, modrá, fialová, čierna), ktoré spolu fungujú ako funkčné ideové nositele a ponúkajú bohatú paletu interpretačných možností. Základom pre ich analýzu slúžia všeobecné znalosti o symbolike farieb a kvetov spolu s analýzou nielen explicitnej, ale aj implicitnej symboliky. Integrovaním do textu interpretácií vybraných básni sa jednak dosahuje porovnávanie tradičného chápania jednotlivých symbolov a hlbšie vniknutie do motivickej roviny autora, a jednak sa čiastkové poznatky na konkrétnych príkladoch syntetizujú.Farebné a kvetinové symboly prispeli k realizácii hlavných motívov básnickej zbierky, akými sú smrť a život. Ideové kolísanie medzi týmito protikladnými pólmi zároveň koreluje s motivickým základom básní, tkvejúcim v kresťanských postulátoch, veď život v ľudskom ponímaní sa vidí ako príprava pre život „skutočný“, ktorý prichádza po smrti. Nadväzujú na to aj paradoxy, sprevádzajúce život františkánskeho básnika – inšpiračné zdroje v podobe žien, viery, detstva a stratenej vlasti alebo cudziny, ktoré odhaľujú deficity „dočasného života“. Dichotomická podoba symbolickej roviny zbierky sa manifestuje v rozdelení farieb na farby, ktoré preukazujú skôr pozitívnu konotáciu a zodpovedajú pólu života a farby, ktoré evokujú skôr negatívne asociácie a korelujú s pólom smrti, neutralizačným a harmonizujúcim prostriedkom dvoch kontroverzných pól vystupuje biela farba. Podobný vzorec môžeme aplikovať aj na symboly kvetov. Ústredným symbolom sa stáva kvietok ľalie, ktorý sa podobne ako biela farba prejavuje ako dichotomický prvok a stelesňuje kvintesenciu autorových snáh ideovej realizácie ústredných motívov zbierky.

The workshop gives an overview of AI Copilots and the distinction between ChatGPT and various AI Copilots (GitHub Copilot, Microsoft Copilot,...). The use of GitHub Copilot for code documentation will be examined. The event is aimed at both people without prior knowledge and experienced developers.

    Abstract Recently opened memorial museums and exhibitions in Croatia museumize the “Homeland War” of 1991 to 1995. This article examines the four major institutions, the Museum of the Homeland War in Karlovac as well as three sites in Vukovar: The Memorial Center for the Homeland War, the Memorial Hospital and the Ovčara Memorial Home. This first systematic site analysis compares 1) the overall narratives; 2) how enemy images from World War II are reactivated to demonize “the other”; 3) how women are represented in these war exhibitions; and 4) the topics that are left out. I argue that while there is still no national museum that includes war developments in all of the country, the two big institutions, the Museum in Karlovac and the Center in Vukovar, focus on the “defenders,” as the Croatian fighters are called – while in Karlovac strikingly marginalizing and at the Center completely omitting civilians. War here means (male) soldiers and weapons, while the other two institutions portray individual victims without discussing their biographies. In all sites, Serbs are depicted with reference to World War II: as Chetniks, running “concentration camps” who committed either “urbicide and culturocide” or a “holocaust” against Croats.

    ABSTRACTTravertines are terrestrial carbonates that are commonly associated with fault activity in extensional and transtensional basins. The faults serve as conduits for the rising and mixing of carbonate‐enriched fluids with thermal and meteoric CO2 inputs promoting travertine precipitation at the surface. Therefore, travertine successions provide key constraint on the faulting, depositional environments, fluid flow and climate. This work focuses on the travertine succession in the Miocene Levač Basin, the marginal basin of the Morava Corridor situated at the junction of the Dinarides and the southernmost Carpathians. Detailed sedimentological, geochronological (U–Pb age, laser ablation – inductively coupled plasma – mass spectrometry) and structural analyses of the travertines are used to reconstruct the evolution of the feeding geoothermal system. Furthermore, these data were used to understand the controlling factors governing alternation of fluid flows enriched in thermally generated and meteoric CO2, and precipitation of travertines in Levač Basin, and finally to elucidate the late stage of basin evolution. Four facies associations are distinguished within the succession, i.e. travertine slope, ridge, flat, and travertine flat under the fluvial influence. The results demonstrated that travertine deposition was controlled by north‐west/south‐west and north‐east/south‐east normal fault arrays. Stable isotope data show positive δ13C values (with δ18O being negative) shifting to negative in the distal and stratigraphically younger deposits implying dilution of deep hydrothermal fluids by mixing with meteoric waters. Finally, travertine deposits yielded a new U–Pb age of ca 14 Ma indicating that the Middle Miocene extensional phase known from other intermountain basins in the Dinarides reached as far east as the Levač Basin and Morava Corridor.

    Abstract Church construction was one of the most challenging, and most political, tasks undertaken by medieval cities. Comparing examples from across Europe reveals profound differences, however, in both the architecture of politics and the politics of architecture; that is, how building projects were administered and how their administration shaped their socio-political significance. Although ranging across the continent, this article is centered on construction in two representative cities: Vienna and London. While the former had a small number of churches, all under the direct control of the mayor and council, the latter had over a hundred, each overseen by locally appointed officers. In Vienna, church construction was, thus, an important field of activity for the city government, which oversaw the work and celebrated its own leadership of the project; in London, it lay outside civic control and offered local opportunities for domination by wealthy families. This difference can be found across the continent, separating the large, old cities of England, northern France, Spain, and the Low Countries, which could have numerous churches, from smaller towns and cities both in these places and across the rest of central, northern, and southern Europe, which typically had a single, major parish church and only a few subordinate ones. This article considers the implications of these two contrasting models—centralized and decentralized, civic and parochial, high government and local politics—on how architectural production functioned as a field of political activity and how church building shaped local distributions and articulations of power in medieval Europe.

    ABSTRACTAuthigenic Mg‐calcite and dolomite are frequently observed in restricted, evaporative environments, such as lagoon or lake systems, but their formation is difficult to capture due to slow growth rates. Lake Neusiedl, an alkaline and subhaline lake with a mean water depth of 0.7 m in Austria, offers a natural system to study the precipitation of Ca‐Mg‐carbonate phases, which occur as fine‐grained, unconsolidated and largely homogenized mud. To elucidate the timing and formation mechanisms of these authigenic carbonate phases, the mineralogical and isotopic composition and radiocarbon age of different sediment grain‐size fractions from <0.2 to >3.0 μm were analysed. X‐ray diffraction analyses show two broad peaks of Mg‐calcite and protodolomite (lacking ordering peaks), suggesting that the carbonates are authigenic rather than detrital in origin. Calibrated carbon‐14 ages range between 200 cal yr bp and 3700 cal yr bp. The linear correlation of age and grain size suggests a very slow growth rate of single crystals of 0.23 to 0.60 μm/ka. These rates suggest an extremely slow sedimentation rate in a shallow lake that existed during most of the Holocene. The higher abundance of protodolomite in older grain fractions, in contrast to the presence of high‐Mg calcite in the youngest fractions, suggests a growth succession where high‐Mg calcite develops first and subsequently transforms into protodolomite. Much higher ages of 6 cal ka bp to 15 cal ka bp are measured in carbonates of lake deposits exposed on land, in a section north‐west of the recent lake, suggesting a growth rate of those carbonate minerals of 0.13 μm/ka. These time constraints further suggest that some carbonate grains could already have nucleated from lake water before or during the last glacial maximum, although under slightly different hydrochemical conditions.

    At the University of Vienna’s Department of Classical Archaeology, two PhD projects recently focused on rural life in the Norican and Upper Pannonian “Danube Limes” hinterland. These projects share a common research area and partially incorporate the same archaeological sites. The Roman rural settlement in northern Noricum, which is present-day Lower Austria, has been relatively understudied. To address this gap, the recently completed PhD project “Roman Rural Landscapes in Noricum” by Dominik Hagmann aimed to synthesize all known data on Roman rural settlements within a strictly defined area of study. In parallel, another PhD project titled “Supplying the Roman Landscape,” conducted by Nisa Iduna Kirchengast, seeks to provide insight into the economic relationship between urban and rural areas along the Austrian stretch of the Danube. This artifact-oriented, bioarchaeological investigation centers on the supply of animal products and livestock farming within a clearly defined area of interest. Both studies aim to make a significant and lasting contribution to current research in the northern hinterland of the ancient Roman provinces of Noricum and Upper Pannonia, from various perspectives. They intend to do this through the application of differentiated interdisciplinary approaches inherent to both projects, consisting of (archaeo-)zoological methods and the use of geomatics through digital archaeology. Consequently, this theory-laden paper aims to offer insights into the current state of work, in the spirit of a workshop discussion, based on the jointly analyzed site of Waldling in Upper Austria. In the following, the archaeological site will thus serve as an (experimental) case study to demonstrate the possibilities and limitations of an integrated, context-based (zoo-)archaeological evaluation.

    Štúdia sa zameriava na analýzu zbierky Helena nosí ľaliu (1935), ktorú treba chápať ako dôležitý medzník v poetike básnika Rudolfa Dilonga – dochádza v nej k poeticko-metodickému obratu smerom ku modernejším umeleckým snahám. Zároveň sa hĺbkovo-motivický základ jeho tvorby nemodernizoval, ale paradoxne práve náboženstvo slúžilo ako energetický zdroj poetickej modernizácie. Hlbšie vniknutie do nej môže poslúžiť ako prínosný základ pre pochopenie celej zbierky, pretože náboženské motívy sú ukotvené v použitých symboloch a zaručujú ich platnosť. Vysoká úroveň symbolizácie je takisto organickou súčasťou avantgardnej poetiky, ktorej cieľom je prerušiť kauzalitu empirickej skutočnosti – odmietajúc dominanciu racionality a vyzdvihujúc rolu práve zmyslového vnímania sa otvoril priestor pre realizáciu Dilongovej túžby po úniku, vytvorením si „šťastnejšej“ alternatívnej reality.V zbierke Helena nosí ľaliu Rudolf Dilong zrealizoval 8 kvetinových (fialka, ľalia, konvalinka, kvet maku, narcis, ďatelina, astra a ruža) a 8 farebných symbolov (biela, zelená, červená príp. ružová, zlatá, strieborná, modrá, fialová, čierna), ktoré spolu fungujú ako funkčné ideové nositele a ponúkajú bohatú paletu interpretačných možností. Základom pre ich analýzu slúžia všeobecné znalosti o symbolike farieb a kvetov spolu s analýzou nielen explicitnej, ale aj implicitnej symboliky. Integrovaním do textu interpretácií vybraných básni sa jednak dosahuje porovnávanie tradičného chápania jednotlivých symbolov a hlbšie vniknutie do motivickej roviny autora, a jednak sa čiastkové poznatky na konkrétnych príkladoch syntetizujú.Farebné a kvetinové symboly prispeli k realizácii hlavných motívov básnickej zbierky, akými sú smrť a život. Ideové kolísanie medzi týmito protikladnými pólmi zároveň koreluje s motivickým základom básní, tkvejúcim v kresťanských postulátoch, veď život v ľudskom ponímaní sa vidí ako príprava pre život „skutočný“, ktorý prichádza po smrti. Nadväzujú na to aj paradoxy, sprevádzajúce život františkánskeho básnika – inšpiračné zdroje v podobe žien, viery, detstva a stratenej vlasti alebo cudziny, ktoré odhaľujú deficity „dočasného života“. Dichotomická podoba symbolickej roviny zbierky sa manifestuje v rozdelení farieb na farby, ktoré preukazujú skôr pozitívnu konotáciu a zodpovedajú pólu života a farby, ktoré evokujú skôr negatívne asociácie a korelujú s pólom smrti, neutralizačným a harmonizujúcim prostriedkom dvoch kontroverzných pól vystupuje biela farba. Podobný vzorec môžeme aplikovať aj na symboly kvetov. Ústredným symbolom sa stáva kvietok ľalie, ktorý sa podobne ako biela farba prejavuje ako dichotomický prvok a stelesňuje kvintesenciu autorových snáh ideovej realizácie ústredných motívov zbierky.

    Abstract Recently opened memorial museums and exhibitions in Croatia museumize the “Homeland War” of 1991 to 1995. This article examines the four major institutions, the Museum of the Homeland War in Karlovac as well as three sites in Vukovar: The Memorial Center for the Homeland War, the Memorial Hospital and the Ovčara Memorial Home. This first systematic site analysis compares 1) the overall narratives; 2) how enemy images from World War II are reactivated to demonize “the other”; 3) how women are represented in these war exhibitions; and 4) the topics that are left out. I argue that while there is still no national museum that includes war developments in all of the country, the two big institutions, the Museum in Karlovac and the Center in Vukovar, focus on the “defenders,” as the Croatian fighters are called – while in Karlovac strikingly marginalizing and at the Center completely omitting civilians. War here means (male) soldiers and weapons, while the other two institutions portray individual victims without discussing their biographies. In all sites, Serbs are depicted with reference to World War II: as Chetniks, running “concentration camps” who committed either “urbicide and culturocide” or a “holocaust” against Croats.

    ABSTRACTTravertines are terrestrial carbonates that are commonly associated with fault activity in extensional and transtensional basins. The faults serve as conduits for the rising and mixing of carbonate‐enriched fluids with thermal and meteoric CO2 inputs promoting travertine precipitation at the surface. Therefore, travertine successions provide key constraint on the faulting, depositional environments, fluid flow and climate. This work focuses on the travertine succession in the Miocene Levač Basin, the marginal basin of the Morava Corridor situated at the junction of the Dinarides and the southernmost Carpathians. Detailed sedimentological, geochronological (U–Pb age, laser ablation – inductively coupled plasma – mass spectrometry) and structural analyses of the travertines are used to reconstruct the evolution of the feeding geoothermal system. Furthermore, these data were used to understand the controlling factors governing alternation of fluid flows enriched in thermally generated and meteoric CO2, and precipitation of travertines in Levač Basin, and finally to elucidate the late stage of basin evolution. Four facies associations are distinguished within the succession, i.e. travertine slope, ridge, flat, and travertine flat under the fluvial influence. The results demonstrated that travertine deposition was controlled by north‐west/south‐west and north‐east/south‐east normal fault arrays. Stable isotope data show positive δ13C values (with δ18O being negative) shifting to negative in the distal and stratigraphically younger deposits implying dilution of deep hydrothermal fluids by mixing with meteoric waters. Finally, travertine deposits yielded a new U–Pb age of ca 14 Ma indicating that the Middle Miocene extensional phase known from other intermountain basins in the Dinarides reached as far east as the Levač Basin and Morava Corridor.

    Abstract Church construction was one of the most challenging, and most political, tasks undertaken by medieval cities. Comparing examples from across Europe reveals profound differences, however, in both the architecture of politics and the politics of architecture; that is, how building projects were administered and how their administration shaped their socio-political significance. Although ranging across the continent, this article is centered on construction in two representative cities: Vienna and London. While the former had a small number of churches, all under the direct control of the mayor and council, the latter had over a hundred, each overseen by locally appointed officers. In Vienna, church construction was, thus, an important field of activity for the city government, which oversaw the work and celebrated its own leadership of the project; in London, it lay outside civic control and offered local opportunities for domination by wealthy families. This difference can be found across the continent, separating the large, old cities of England, northern France, Spain, and the Low Countries, which could have numerous churches, from smaller towns and cities both in these places and across the rest of central, northern, and southern Europe, which typically had a single, major parish church and only a few subordinate ones. This article considers the implications of these two contrasting models—centralized and decentralized, civic and parochial, high government and local politics—on how architectural production functioned as a field of political activity and how church building shaped local distributions and articulations of power in medieval Europe.

    ABSTRACTAuthigenic Mg‐calcite and dolomite are frequently observed in restricted, evaporative environments, such as lagoon or lake systems, but their formation is difficult to capture due to slow growth rates. Lake Neusiedl, an alkaline and subhaline lake with a mean water depth of 0.7 m in Austria, offers a natural system to study the precipitation of Ca‐Mg‐carbonate phases, which occur as fine‐grained, unconsolidated and largely homogenized mud. To elucidate the timing and formation mechanisms of these authigenic carbonate phases, the mineralogical and isotopic composition and radiocarbon age of different sediment grain‐size fractions from <0.2 to >3.0 μm were analysed. X‐ray diffraction analyses show two broad peaks of Mg‐calcite and protodolomite (lacking ordering peaks), suggesting that the carbonates are authigenic rather than detrital in origin. Calibrated carbon‐14 ages range between 200 cal yr bp and 3700 cal yr bp. The linear correlation of age and grain size suggests a very slow growth rate of single crystals of 0.23 to 0.60 μm/ka. These rates suggest an extremely slow sedimentation rate in a shallow lake that existed during most of the Holocene. The higher abundance of protodolomite in older grain fractions, in contrast to the presence of high‐Mg calcite in the youngest fractions, suggests a growth succession where high‐Mg calcite develops first and subsequently transforms into protodolomite. Much higher ages of 6 cal ka bp to 15 cal ka bp are measured in carbonates of lake deposits exposed on land, in a section north‐west of the recent lake, suggesting a growth rate of those carbonate minerals of 0.13 μm/ka. These time constraints further suggest that some carbonate grains could already have nucleated from lake water before or during the last glacial maximum, although under slightly different hydrochemical conditions.
