    Authors: Cataluccio, Francesco Matteo; Franaszek, Andrzej; Pietrych, Krystyna;

    The topic of a conversation of three literary scholars which took place in the last months of the Zbigniew Herbert Year (2018) is the experience recorded in the poet’s poems and essays of the Mediterranean culture, antiquity as a tool of cognition, an important code as well as the experience of his real journeys to the south of Europe being a kind of dividing line in his literary output and resonating in it.

    Authors: Fayard, Nicole;

    Recent Shakespearean productions, just like current European crises, have highlighted the exclusionary nature of European identity. In defining the scope of this special issue, the aim of this introduction is to shift the study of Shakespeare in/and Europe away from the ideological field of “unity within diversity” and its attendant politics of negotiation and mediation. Instead, it investigates whether re-situating Shakespearean analysis within regimes of exclusionary politics and group conflict attitudes helps to generate dynamic cultural and social understandings. To what effect is Shakespeare’s work invoked in relation with the tensions inherent in European societies? Can such invocations encourage reflections on Europe as a social, political and/or cultural entity? Is it possible to conceptualize Shakespearean drama as offering an effective instrument that connects―or not―the voices of the people of Europe?

    Authors: Nowicka, Daria;

    In his book Poeta w labiryncie historii. Studia o pisarskich rolach Jerzego Ficowskiego (Poet in the labyrinth of history. Studies on writer’s roles of Jerzy Ficowski) Jerzy Kandziora strives to provide a holistic outlook on the literary output of the author of Ptak poza ptakiem (A bird beyond birds). The main interpretation categories proposed by the scholar include time, labyrinth and history. They allowed the author to create a cross-section book ranging from describing Ficowski’s pre-poetic life, through his literary and artistic fascinations with Schulz, Wojtkiewicz, Tuwim and the everyday world, to the experience of borderland, both literal and poetic. Using this essayistic and also in some fragments synthetic form of description, Kandziora marks a new trend in interpreting the poet’s output and draws attention particularly to the impact of the social imaginary for the functioning of the poet in contemporary literary studies. Jerzy Kandziora w swojej książce Poeta w labiryncie historii. Studia o pisarskich rolach Jerzego Ficowskiego podjął próbę całościowego spojrzenia na twórczość autora Ptaka poza ptakiem. Głównymi kategoriami interpretacyjnymi zaproponowanymi przez badacza stały się czas, labirynt i historia. Pozwoliły one autorowi na typ lektury przekrojowej – począwszy od opisania życia przedpoetyckiego Ficowskiego, przez jego literackie i artystyczne fascynacje Schulzem, Wojtkiewiczem, Tuwimem, światem codziennym, aż po doświadczenie pogranicza, tego dosłownego i poetyckiego. Tą eseistyczną, fragmentami również syntetyczną forma opisu, Kandziora zaznacza nowy nurt odczytań twórczości poety, zwraca uwagę zwłaszcza na wpływ społecznego imaginarium w funkcjonowaniu poety we współczesnym literaturoznawstwie.

    Authors: Domański, Tomasz;

    This paper aims at highlighting the role of higher education institutions in Lodz in the regeneration of urban space and in building the international brand of a university town. Higher education institutions in Lodz are managers and administrators of many historic buildings that testify to the identity of the city and its rich historic legacy. Besides renovating these buildings, universities provide them with new functions by opening them up to local and international communities. Innovation in regenerating cultural heritage may become a distinguishing feature of both Lodz universities and international city’s brand strategy. The key challenge to Lodz is to complete the global regeneration of a post-industrial city in social, cultural, economic, and spatial dimensions using EU funds.

    Authors: Procházka, Martin;

    The paper will discuss the ways in which Shakespeare’s tragedies (King Lear) and histories (1 and 2 Henry IV), translated in the period of the Czech cultural renaissance (known also as the Czech National Revival) at the end of the 18th and in the first half of the 19th century, challenge and transform the nationalist concept of history based on “primordialism” (Anthony Smith), deriving from an invented account of remote past (the forged Manuscripts of Dvur Kralove and Zelena Hora) and emphasizing its absolute value for the present and future of the Czech nation. While for nationalist leaders Shakespeare’s dramas served as models for “boldly painted heroic characters” of the Czech past, translators, dramatists and poets had to deal with the aspects of Shakespeare’s tragedies and histories which were disrupting the nationalist visions of the past and future. Contrasting the appropriations of King Lear and both parts of Henry IV in the translations and historical plays by the leading Czech dramatist Josef Kajetán Tyl (1808-1852) and the notebooks and dramatic fragments of the major romantic poet Karel Hynek Mácha (1810-1836), the paper will attempt to specify the role of Shakespeare in shaping the historical consciousness of emerging modern Czech culture.

    Authors: Pielesiak, Iwona;

    Since the transition period of the 1990s, historic relics have been exposed to multiple threats. The following case study of Łódź illustrates the general need for a change of approach towards cultural legacy management, especially in reference to more common heritage elements which are not under hard protection.

    Authors: González, Pablo Alonso; Vázquez, Alfredo Macías;

    The number of cultural parks and heritage areas is increasing in Europe and the United States. Those are spreading over other areas where the economic sectors related to tourism and leisure gain weight. Heritage areas or parks are heterogeneous initiatives that place cultural heritage at the heart of spatial planning policy and economic development, aiming at the reinvention of large territories and local community participation in planning. Their relevance stems from their potential influence on the territorial configuration of broad regions and their impact upon the articulation of traditional protected areas. Notwithstanding this, they have attracted scant academic attention so far.

    Authors: Barczyk, Agnieszka; Słowikowski, Piotr;

    The article is a transcription of an interview with Piotr Słowikowski – a journalist from Lodz associated for many years with TVP Lodz (one of the regional branches of TVP, Poland’s public television broadcaster). The conversation focuses on the most significant TV programs (individual and series) produced by Słowikowski, as well as figures he considers to be particularly important for various reasons. Overall, it seems difficult to reconcile the prestigious and educational nature of Słowikowski’s productions with the contemporary perception of television as a medium for sensation and entertainment.

    Authors: Cataluccio, Francesco Matteo; Franaszek, Andrzej; Pietrych, Krystyna;

    Authors: Fayard, Nicole;

    Authors: Nowicka, Daria;

    Authors: Domański, Tomasz;

    Authors: Procházka, Martin;

    Authors: Pielesiak, Iwona;

    Since the transition period of the 1990s, historic relics have been exposed to multiple threats. The following case study of Łódź illustrates the general need for a change of approach towards cultural legacy management, especially in reference to more common heritage elements which are not under hard protection.

    Authors: González, Pablo Alonso; Vázquez, Alfredo Macías;

    Authors: Barczyk, Agnieszka; Słowikowski, Piotr;
