    Choice is an important factor in video games. Narrative driven games continuously offer choices to the player in different ways. Through narrative decisions, gameplay style and character creation players get encouraged to make an array of choices. These choices increase the replay value of games. This study aimed to deconstruct the structure of narrative driven games to properly examine how replay value can be increased by choice. Choices come in many forms; some offer more value to the player than others. Case studies of the three games: Detroit: Become Human (2018), Disco Elysium (2019) and Monster Prom (2018), examined how choice is implemented. A quantitative survey was conducted in Spring 2022 to research the likes and dislikes of players in a wide range of age groups. The survey provided valuable information on the importance of choice to the player, and discovered which types of choice are more popular. It also showcased the likelihood of replay value from the players depending on the choices available in a video game. Future research about replay value benefits companies and consumers alike. By adding replay value the consumer will be rewarded and the company can increase the satisfaction of its customers.

    Culture is a complex and multidimensional concept that has been studied extensively in various disciplines. The Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage recognized the im-portance of intangible culture, defining the responsibilities of the State Members. In 2018, the UNESCO emphasizes the synergy between tourism and culture, and so understanding the intangible elements of culture is crucial for developing sustainable and responsible tourism practices while protecting cultural heritage. The tourism industry has shifted towards experience-based services and products. While understanding the relationship of culture with authenticity, tourism, and meaningful experiences, cultural tourism becomes arguably one of the most optimal tourism practices to develop to succeed, create a profitable business, and protect and safeguard intangible cultural heritage. The case which is analysed under the concept mentioned is the Finnish tango. Finnish tango is a distinct representation of Finnish culture that blends traditional Finnish practices with the emotional intensity of Argentine tango. The objective of this research was to identify what aspects of Finnish tango make it suit-able for further development as a cultural and tourism asset. First, a theoretical framework was studied, following with the implementation of qualitative case study approach, using in-depth interviews with Finnish tango experts and observations of the Finnish tango landscape in the present. Results were formed using thematic analysis, discovering several themes relating to stakeholder perspective of tango within the Finnish context. The conclusions arrived at are there is a reduced interest in Finnish tango in its current context. Strengths of Finish tango are in its historic societal importance, accessibility through its ease of learning and per-forming, the desire to dance with a partner, the physicality, and the intimacy derived from Finnish tango, the desire of stakeholders to collaborate and work within the community, and its strength as a tourism experience. Opportunities for development include the use of storytelling to market Finnish tango and its authenticity, the inclusion of Finnish tango in the UNESCO intangible heritage list, development of Finnish tango as a packaged experience similar to Argentinean tango, and the inclusion of Finnish tango in the public education system. There is also a need to acknowledge language barriers and the need for instruc-tion and marketing in English, as well as exporting Finnish tango as a tourism asset. These aspects provide context for further development and advocation of Finnish tango as an undiscovered tourism asset. The study has significant relevance for the field of cultural tourism, as it contributes to the understanding of Finnish tango as a potential tourism experience.

    This thesis focused on the subgenre of abstract expressionist moving image. The works of three contemporary moving image artists, Stan Brakhage, Pipilotti Rist and Bill Viola, were analysed to exemplify traits of abstract expressionist video art. Along with this study, a video installation titled Highway 88 was created. The study was conducted to explicate the context in which the moving image artwork was created. Data for this thesis were collected from a variety of relevant sources such as articles, books, videos, and interviews. Artworks for analysis were sourced from the artists’ own websites or YouTube for this study. The study explored and defined abstract expressionist moving image as an art style along with what artwork this genre constituted of. The study encouraged artists to experiment with an often overlooked genre by demystifying works in the field showing that abstract expressionist moving image works has its place in the context of fine art.

    Although cultural heritage is all around us and an inseparable part of us, yet receiving funding to its preservation remains as a challenge for some of the organizations conserving it. The Foundation of Petäjävesi Old Church in co-operation with the National Land Survey of Finland is pursuing to build a World Heritage Center of Central Finland which would retain the cultural legacy of Central Finland for future generations. This project requires funding in order to executed. The main objective was to discover what type of online and offline communications encourages potential donators to provide financial support for the construction project. Qualitative research method was utilized by conducting semi-structured interviews with themes of cultural heritage, responsibility communications and fundraising for cultural heritage. A thematic analysis under these themes was performed. The process led to a discovery where the educational and overall value of cultural heritage and communication methods, such as different events and activities and media content with emotive, concrete and storytelling content should be implemented. The results revealed different fundraising methods where easiness and events played a key role. These methods were included in the communications plan and provided concrete actions which the Foundation of Petäjävesi Old Church can utilize in the pursuit of receiving funding for their cause and create a personal attachment of the potential donators to their cause.

    My thesis explores a sensual relationship between humans and plants and how it could change our mindset towards ourselves, nature, and the planet. I use my own experiences and my artistic journey to explore this subject. I also go through examples of interspecies relationships and explore plant intelligence. In my artistic journey I also study my subject through the media of porn and explore the fantasy aspects.

    This thesis investigated the effects of repetitive tropes and shorthand in media, by using the corset as a case-study. The aim was to reveal how choices made during media productions, especially period films, often forgo historical richness for either artistic liberty or heavily opinionated social commentary. Methods of research included watching and reading interviews with costume designers, examining the historical accuracies of the films discussed, drawing direct lines between the social beliefs of the creators involved and the product they have released. The historical research about the corset was done through reading professional texts, listening to content by experts in their fields, and by examining historical photographs. The results showcase that today's abundance of media makes it more difficult for us to filter all the information given to us when much of it is shrouded in shorthand and our modern lives are so attached to said media. The thesis concludes that the best way to combat this type of propaganda is to demand better from media productions, and to educate yourself on the rich history behind the content you consume.

    This thesis is observing and analyzing a contemporary painting practice happening in the post internet era. Post internet is a definition of the wholesome global culture environment of today, risen after the moment of common internet access and entitled to the standard existence of the internet everywhere and for everyone. Post internet is a layer in the culture and on a constant emergence affecting the society. The theoretical framework of this thesis is discussing the nature of post internet and showcasing examples of contemporary painting that have physical and traditional mediums: observing influences of post internet in contemporary, physical painting. Throughout the artwork examples are pointed influences of the post internet era; influences that can be analyzed within the subject matters, visual styles and processes. The examples chosen for the theoretical analysis are interesting for supporting the continuum and development of contemporary, physical painting. Thesis also includes a report of an artistic part of the thesis: a series of works consisting of two oil paintings and two mixed media sculptures. The artworks are introduced with artwork statements reflecting the post internet era.

    The purpose of this thesis was to gather information on oneironautics as a potential tool for visionary artists. Contemporary visionary art aims to see the unseen and depict it in a visual form that is clear to our ordinary perception. Contemporary visionary artists depict realms that cannot be observed in physical reality. The theoretical part of this study explored the history and importance of visionary art, and the research section suggested practical exercises that can broaden the perception of the mind. The aim of the case study presented in the theoretical part was to investigate one of the first contemporary visionary artists Ernst Fuchs, contemporary visionary artist Yayoi Kusama, and contemporary artist Dave Green. The key results suggested that oneironautics, a form of lucid dreaming, indeed, can be used as a potential booster for visionary experience and visual enhancements of an artist. The goal of the practical part was to showcase an installation in the gallery Himmelblau. This installation consisted of four visionary paintings based on the personal experiences of the author, miniature sculptures, and ambient music. The findings based on the research in the theoretical part and on personal art practice indicated that oneironautics is an efficient method of broadening the perception of a visionary artist.

This thesis in fine arts explores the history, methods, and nature of visual storytelling in the context of painting. The thesis presents why telling stories is meaningful and considers the possibilities and limits of narrative within the art of painting, also touching on illustration and comics. The thesis presents examples of narrative methods from art history and today’s narrative painters. In the artistic section of this thesis, a narrative ensemble of artworks was realized using means of painting and printmaking. The mixed media paintings each tell their own part of the story and together form a narrative in which the viewer can see the denouement they want.

    The aim of this thesis was to explain the principles of expressive art methods and art collectives and discussed how they are conceptionally similar and how they can be utilised for personal and communal development. The study discussed how working in a project environment and simultaneously forming a creative collective are related and can affect each other. In the first part of the thesis, base theories and methods are explained. Research and discussions were used to examine if and how the author’s personal experiences relate to others working in the creative field. Many similarities in how creative communities are established and how they function regardless of location were found. Arguments were made for the benefits of these collective ways of thinking and working. The second part contains art works the author exhibited during the process of forming the Collective Sandbox. There are seven personal works that related in some capacity to the communal conversations that were had at the time of working on said exhibitions. These works as well as the process of forming a community were relevant for the artist’s development in creative thinking. The thesis argues that collective creativity would benefit humans both as individuals and as communities.

    Choice is an important factor in video games. Narrative driven games continuously offer choices to the player in different ways. Through narrative decisions, gameplay style and character creation players get encouraged to make an array of choices. These choices increase the replay value of games. This study aimed to deconstruct the structure of narrative driven games to properly examine how replay value can be increased by choice. Choices come in many forms; some offer more value to the player than others. Case studies of the three games: Detroit: Become Human (2018), Disco Elysium (2019) and Monster Prom (2018), examined how choice is implemented. A quantitative survey was conducted in Spring 2022 to research the likes and dislikes of players in a wide range of age groups. The survey provided valuable information on the importance of choice to the player, and discovered which types of choice are more popular. It also showcased the likelihood of replay value from the players depending on the choices available in a video game. Future research about replay value benefits companies and consumers alike. By adding replay value the consumer will be rewarded and the company can increase the satisfaction of its customers.

    Culture is a complex and multidimensional concept that has been studied extensively in various disciplines. The Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage recognized the im-portance of intangible culture, defining the responsibilities of the State Members. In 2018, the UNESCO emphasizes the synergy between tourism and culture, and so understanding the intangible elements of culture is crucial for developing sustainable and responsible tourism practices while protecting cultural heritage. The tourism industry has shifted towards experience-based services and products. While understanding the relationship of culture with authenticity, tourism, and meaningful experiences, cultural tourism becomes arguably one of the most optimal tourism practices to develop to succeed, create a profitable business, and protect and safeguard intangible cultural heritage. The case which is analysed under the concept mentioned is the Finnish tango. Finnish tango is a distinct representation of Finnish culture that blends traditional Finnish practices with the emotional intensity of Argentine tango. The objective of this research was to identify what aspects of Finnish tango make it suit-able for further development as a cultural and tourism asset. First, a theoretical framework was studied, following with the implementation of qualitative case study approach, using in-depth interviews with Finnish tango experts and observations of the Finnish tango landscape in the present. Results were formed using thematic analysis, discovering several themes relating to stakeholder perspective of tango within the Finnish context. The conclusions arrived at are there is a reduced interest in Finnish tango in its current context. Strengths of Finish tango are in its historic societal importance, accessibility through its ease of learning and per-forming, the desire to dance with a partner, the physicality, and the intimacy derived from Finnish tango, the desire of stakeholders to collaborate and work within the community, and its strength as a tourism experience. Opportunities for development include the use of storytelling to market Finnish tango and its authenticity, the inclusion of Finnish tango in the UNESCO intangible heritage list, development of Finnish tango as a packaged experience similar to Argentinean tango, and the inclusion of Finnish tango in the public education system. There is also a need to acknowledge language barriers and the need for instruc-tion and marketing in English, as well as exporting Finnish tango as a tourism asset. These aspects provide context for further development and advocation of Finnish tango as an undiscovered tourism asset. The study has significant relevance for the field of cultural tourism, as it contributes to the understanding of Finnish tango as a potential tourism experience.

    This thesis focused on the subgenre of abstract expressionist moving image. The works of three contemporary moving image artists, Stan Brakhage, Pipilotti Rist and Bill Viola, were analysed to exemplify traits of abstract expressionist video art. Along with this study, a video installation titled Highway 88 was created. The study was conducted to explicate the context in which the moving image artwork was created. Data for this thesis were collected from a variety of relevant sources such as articles, books, videos, and interviews. Artworks for analysis were sourced from the artists’ own websites or YouTube for this study. The study explored and defined abstract expressionist moving image as an art style along with what artwork this genre constituted of. The study encouraged artists to experiment with an often overlooked genre by demystifying works in the field showing that abstract expressionist moving image works has its place in the context of fine art.

    Although cultural heritage is all around us and an inseparable part of us, yet receiving funding to its preservation remains as a challenge for some of the organizations conserving it. The Foundation of Petäjävesi Old Church in co-operation with the National Land Survey of Finland is pursuing to build a World Heritage Center of Central Finland which would retain the cultural legacy of Central Finland for future generations. This project requires funding in order to executed. The main objective was to discover what type of online and offline communications encourages potential donators to provide financial support for the construction project. Qualitative research method was utilized by conducting semi-structured interviews with themes of cultural heritage, responsibility communications and fundraising for cultural heritage. A thematic analysis under these themes was performed. The process led to a discovery where the educational and overall value of cultural heritage and communication methods, such as different events and activities and media content with emotive, concrete and storytelling content should be implemented. The results revealed different fundraising methods where easiness and events played a key role. These methods were included in the communications plan and provided concrete actions which the Foundation of Petäjävesi Old Church can utilize in the pursuit of receiving funding for their cause and create a personal attachment of the potential donators to their cause.

    My thesis explores a sensual relationship between humans and plants and how it could change our mindset towards ourselves, nature, and the planet. I use my own experiences and my artistic journey to explore this subject. I also go through examples of interspecies relationships and explore plant intelligence. In my artistic journey I also study my subject through the media of porn and explore the fantasy aspects.

    This thesis investigated the effects of repetitive tropes and shorthand in media, by using the corset as a case-study. The aim was to reveal how choices made during media productions, especially period films, often forgo historical richness for either artistic liberty or heavily opinionated social commentary. Methods of research included watching and reading interviews with costume designers, examining the historical accuracies of the films discussed, drawing direct lines between the social beliefs of the creators involved and the product they have released. The historical research about the corset was done through reading professional texts, listening to content by experts in their fields, and by examining historical photographs. The results showcase that today's abundance of media makes it more difficult for us to filter all the information given to us when much of it is shrouded in shorthand and our modern lives are so attached to said media. The thesis concludes that the best way to combat this type of propaganda is to demand better from media productions, and to educate yourself on the rich history behind the content you consume.

    This thesis is observing and analyzing a contemporary painting practice happening in the post internet era. Post internet is a definition of the wholesome global culture environment of today, risen after the moment of common internet access and entitled to the standard existence of the internet everywhere and for everyone. Post internet is a layer in the culture and on a constant emergence affecting the society. The theoretical framework of this thesis is discussing the nature of post internet and showcasing examples of contemporary painting that have physical and traditional mediums: observing influences of post internet in contemporary, physical painting. Throughout the artwork examples are pointed influences of the post internet era; influences that can be analyzed within the subject matters, visual styles and processes. The examples chosen for the theoretical analysis are interesting for supporting the continuum and development of contemporary, physical painting. Thesis also includes a report of an artistic part of the thesis: a series of works consisting of two oil paintings and two mixed media sculptures. The artworks are introduced with artwork statements reflecting the post internet era.

    The purpose of this thesis was to gather information on oneironautics as a potential tool for visionary artists. Contemporary visionary art aims to see the unseen and depict it in a visual form that is clear to our ordinary perception. Contemporary visionary artists depict realms that cannot be observed in physical reality. The theoretical part of this study explored the history and importance of visionary art, and the research section suggested practical exercises that can broaden the perception of the mind. The aim of the case study presented in the theoretical part was to investigate one of the first contemporary visionary artists Ernst Fuchs, contemporary visionary artist Yayoi Kusama, and contemporary artist Dave Green. The key results suggested that oneironautics, a form of lucid dreaming, indeed, can be used as a potential booster for visionary experience and visual enhancements of an artist. The goal of the practical part was to showcase an installation in the gallery Himmelblau. This installation consisted of four visionary paintings based on the personal experiences of the author, miniature sculptures, and ambient music. The findings based on the research in the theoretical part and on personal art practice indicated that oneironautics is an efficient method of broadening the perception of a visionary artist.

    Tämä kuvataiteen opinnäytetyö käsittelee visuaalisen tarinankerronnan historiaa, metodeja ja luonnetta maalaustaiteen kontekstissa. Opinnäytetyö esittelee, miksi tarinoiden kertominen on merkityksellistä ja pohtii narratiivisuuden mahdollisuuksia ja rajoja maalaustaiteessa, sivuten myös kuvitusta ja sarjakuvaa. Opinnäytetyö esittelee esimerkkejä taidehistoriallisista kerronnan keinoista sekä nykypäivän narratiivisista taidemaalareista. Opinnäytetyön taiteellisessa osiossa toteutettiin maalauksen ja taidegrafiikan keinoin kerronnallinen teoskokonaisuus. Sekatekniikkamaalaukset kertovat kukin oman osansa tarinasta ja yhdessä muodostavat kertomuksen, jossa katsoja voi nähdä haluamansa loppuratkaisun. This thesis in fine arts explores the history, methods, and nature of visual storytelling in the context of painting. The thesis presents why telling stories is meaningful and considers the possibilities and limits of narrative within the art of painting, also touching on illustration and comics. The thesis presents examples of narrative methods from art history and today’s narrative painters. In the artistic section of this thesis, a narrative ensemble of artworks was realized using means of painting and printmaking. The mixed media paintings each tell their own part of the story and together form a narrative in which the viewer can see the denouement they want.

    The aim of this thesis was to explain the principles of expressive art methods and art collectives and discussed how they are conceptionally similar and how they can be utilised for personal and communal development. The study discussed how working in a project environment and simultaneously forming a creative collective are related and can affect each other. In the first part of the thesis, base theories and methods are explained. Research and discussions were used to examine if and how the author’s personal experiences relate to others working in the creative field. Many similarities in how creative communities are established and how they function regardless of location were found. Arguments were made for the benefits of these collective ways of thinking and working. The second part contains art works the author exhibited during the process of forming the Collective Sandbox. There are seven personal works that related in some capacity to the communal conversations that were had at the time of working on said exhibitions. These works as well as the process of forming a community were relevant for the artist’s development in creative thinking. The thesis argues that collective creativity would benefit humans both as individuals and as communities.
