    This paper investigates the recent advances in parsing the Index Thomisticus Treebank, which encompasses Medieval Latin texts by Thomas Aquinas. The research focuses on two types of variables. On the one hand, it examines the impact that a larger dataset has on the results of parsing; on the other hand, performances of new parsers are analysed with respect to less recent tools. Term of comparison to determine the effective parsing advances are the results in parsing the Index Thomisticus Treebank described in a previous work. First, the best performing parser among those concerned in that study is tested on a larger dataset than the one originally used. Then, some parser combinations that were developed in the same study are evaluated as well, assessing that more training data result in more accurate performances. Finally, to examine the impact that newly available tools have on parsing results, we train, test, and evaluate two neural parsers chosen among those best performing in the CoNLL 2018 Shared Task. Our experiments reach the highest accuracy rates achieved so far in automatic syntactic parsing of the Index Thomisticus Treebank and of Latin overall.

  • L’articolo discute i resti malacologici rinvenuti a Khashuri Natsargora e Aradetis Orgora, due siti dell’Età del Bronzo/ Ferro nel bacino del Kura nella provincia georgiana di Shida Kartli (Caucaso Meridionale). Il corpus consiste in più di 500 esemplari ed include specie sia di terra che d’acqua dolce (queste ultime soprattutto per Aradetis Orgora), mentre le specie marine rappresentano una porzione estremamente marginale del totale. Il record, ottenuto attraverso la raccolta diretta in corso di scavo, include solo le specie con la conchiglia più resistente e di maggiori dimensioni, più riconoscibili ad occhio nudo e quindi rappresenta solo una parte degli inventari malacologici pertinenti alle sequenze stratigrafiche investigate. Nonostante questi limiti obiettivi, si è ritenuto opportuno presentare i dati raccolti e i risultati della loro analisi, che hanno permesso di ottenere informazioni di tipo paleoecologico e paleoeconomico non prive di interesse. L’analisi dei resti disponibili mostra una chiara predominanza di specie connesse con ambienti aperti e xerici, in sostanziale accordo sia con l’ambiente locale attuale che con i pochi dati paleoambientali disponibili. La debole variazione diacronica della composizione degli inventari suggerisce una sostanziale stabilità ecologica per entrambi i biotopi. L’abbondanza di molluschi d’acqua dolce ad Aradetis Orgora può essere spiegata con la prossimità del sito ai fiumi Prone e Kura, biotopi dai quali essi potrebbero essere stati raccolti intenzionalmente a scopi alimentari, come potrebbero suggerire alcuni paralleli da altre società dell’Età del Bronzo. The paper discusses the malacological remains recovered at Khashuri Natsargora and Aradetis Orgora, two Bronze Age/Iron Age sites located in the Kura River basin of the Shida Kartli province of Georgia (Southern Caucasus). The corpus consists of over 500 items, which include both land and (especially for Aradetis Orgora) freshwater species, while marine species represent an extremely marginal portion of the total. The record, obtained through direct collection during the excavation, included only the species with the largest and most resistant shell (therefore better recognisable with the naked eye), and represents only a part of the malacological assemblages relevant to the investigated stratigraphic sequences. Despite these objective limits, it was considered appropriate to present the collected data and the results of their analysis, as they allowed to obtain some paleoecological and paleoeconomic information that is not totally devoid of interest. The analysis on the available remains shows a clear dominance of species connected with open and xeric environments, in substantial agreement both with the present local environment and with the few available palaeoenvironmental data. The very weak diachronic variability of the assemblages seems to suggest a substantial ecological stability for both biotopes. The abundance of freshwater molluscs at Aradetis Orgora can be explained with the proximinity of the site to the Prone and Kura rivers, biotopes from which they may have been intentionally collected for use as food, as some parallels from other Bronze Age societies may suggest.

    ArCOA (Archivi e Collezioni dell'Oriente Antico) is a project launched by the CNR Institute of Heritage Science and the University of Milan. It aims at studying, digitizing and promoting the collections of Near Eastern antiquities and historical archives preserved in Italian museums and other public institutions. The ArCOA Digital Archive was conceived and developed at the CNR-ISPC for the cataloguing of the archaeological objects forming those collections. It consists of a backend using a relational database (based on the open-source DBMS MariaDB) for persistence, a browser-based interface for the synchronous recording and manipulation of data by a distributed workgroup, and a REST API service to expose interoperable data that will be queried by the project's portal. The entire system is based on the open-source PHP Web framework Laravel. The conceptual model of the relational database consists of nine entities for the description of the objects, the collections to which they belong, the collectors who formed them, the institutions where they are currently hosted, the sites of origin of the pieces, the archival documents describing them, their images and 3D models, and the related bibliography.

  • The author adopts an holistic concept of the landscape, which considers its ecological and cultural characteristics as an expression of the relationship between the human being and the environment. From this concept perspective, it she analyzes the legal protection of the landscape, conceived as a common social interest and protected by the Brazilian law through the right to an ecologically balanced environment, the right to sustainable cities and the right to cultural heritage. She investigates the legal instruments for the protection of the landscape, identifying its limitations in the light of the lack of normative definition of criteria and methodologies in the field. L'autrice adotta un concetto integrativo di paesaggio, in cui le caratteristiche ecologiche e culturali sono intese come espressione del rapporto tra l'essere umano e l'ambiente. Utilizzando questo concetto analizza la tutela giuridica del paesaggio quale bene comune diffuso, protetto dal diritto brasiliano attraverso il diritto all'ambiente ecologicamente equilibrato, il diritto alla città sostenibile e il diritto al patrimonio culturale. Tutela che si avvale degli strumenti giuridici di protezione del paesaggio; ne individua i limiti dovuti alla mancanza di normative, di criteri e di metodologie che ne concretizzino la tutela nella presa di decisioni. La autora adopta un concepto integrador de paisaje, que considera sus características ecológicas y culturales como una expresión de la relación entre el ser humano y el medio ambiente. A partir de este concepto, analiza la tutela jurídica del paisaje como un bien común difuso y protegido por el derecho brasileño a través del derecho al medio ambiente ecológicamente equilibrado, el derecho a la ciudad sostenible y el derecho al patrimonio cultural y pasa por los instrumentos jurídicos de protección paisajística, identificando sus limitaciones debido a la falta de definición normativa de criterios y de metodologías. A autora adota um conceito integrador de paisagem que considera suas características ecológicas e culturais como expressão da relação entre o ser humano e o ambiente. A partir deste conceito, analisa a proteção jurídica da paisagem como um macrobem de interesse difuso, tutelado no direito brasileiro através do direito ao meio ambiente ecologicamente equilibrado, do direito à cidade sustentável e do direito ao patrimônio cultural e percorre os instrumentos jurídicos de proteção da paisagem, identificando suas limitações pela falta de definição normativa de critérios e de metodologias, quando da tomada de decisões.

    Può il suono aumentare il coinvolgimento dei visitatori delle ricostruzioni virtuali di contesti culturali? La loro caratterizzazione acustica quali obiettivi può perseguire? Attraverso quali metodologie e sistemi di riproduzione? Come si relazionano la filologia e la creatività ai fini della conoscenza e del coinvolgimento? Può la realtà virtuale ricreare il paesaggio sonoro del passato? Sono queste alcune delle tematiche affrontate nel corso dell'evento online curato da Angela Bellia ed Eva Pietroni all'Istituto di Scienze del Patrimonio Culturale (ISPC) del CNR. L'iniziativa si inserisce nell'ambito dell'Anno Internazionale del Suono 2020-2021 (International Year of Sound - IYS 2020-21), un'iniziativa globale riferita alla "Charter of Sound" UNESCO n. 39C/59, che ha l'obiettivo di evidenziare l'importanza del suono in tutti gli aspetti della vita e dell'ambiente naturale, nonché la necessità del controllo del rumore sia nell'ambiente urbanizzato che in quello dei luoghi di lavoro, di formazione, di accoglienza e di cura, incoraggiando anche la comprensione degli sviluppi scientifici e l'applicazione tecnologica riguardante sia gli aspetti fisici del suono sia quelli della sua percezione. Il webinar mira ad esplorare come lo sviluppo di strumenti interattivi finalizzati a coinvolgere i visitatori come "soundwalker" di ricostruzioni virtuali di siti archeologici o luoghi di interesse storico-culturale e architettonico e del loro "historical soundscape" possa aprire nuove prospettive di ricerca non soltanto sulle applicazioni di Immersive Virtual Reality, ma anche sul rapporto tra suono e interazione multisensoriale in ambiente virtuale. Infatti, nel corso degli ultimi anni, attraverso l'Immersive Virtual Reality, è stato possibile sperimentare nuove opportunità di progettazione multisensoriale che combina strumenti e tecniche di modellazione e di Virtual Reality Experience in ambito acustico con il pieno coinvolgimento dell'apparato percettivo del visitatore. Si intende, dunque, porre l'attenzione su come l'esperienza immersiva multisensoriale - ed in particolare l'interazione tra vista e udito nelle ricostruzioni virtuali, senza escludere l'apporto degli altri sensi - possa favorire una più profonda comprensione dei luoghi e degli spazi dove il suono, inteso come insieme di musica, sonorità dell'ambiente e rumori, veniva prodotto e percepito. Inoltre, stimolando l'indagine sul "sonic heritage", l'incontro ha anche lo scopo di contestualizzare e valorizzare lo studio dell'antropofonia, della geofonia e della biofonia del passato e della "digital audible history" come patrimonio culturale da conoscere, preservare e comunicare anche attraverso gli strumenti e le applicazioni per l'interazione con il mondo virtuale. Tenendo conto di quanto è emerso nel corso del progetto di ricerca STESICHOROS finanziato dale Marie Sk?odowska-Curie Actions Individual Fellowship, e delle esperienze del Virtual Heritage Lab nell'ambito della realtà virtuale e della comunicazione multimediale, saranno poste le basi per un metodo innovativo che terrà conto non soltanto delle potenzialità dell'applicazione della tecnologia 3D all'acustica virtuale, ma anche della ricerca acustemologica che considera il suono come strumento di conoscenza attraverso l'intreccio di relazioni che lo lega ai luoghi, allo spazio e al corpo, fornendo nuovi strumenti di analisi e di valutazione dell'impatto delle esperienze immersive e della comunicazione sonora nel patrimonio culturale. Si discute anche di come il suono e il "soundscape" venga usato nei vari media: realtà virtuale, videogiochi, cinema, documentario, secondo regole codificate in modo diverso, al fine di conferire credibilità e verosimiglianza allo spazio simulato, di evocare situazioni e di coinvolgere percettivamente ed emotivamente il visitatore. Queste regole, che sono ormai entrate nell'industria delle grandi produzioni, seguono principi artistici più vicini alla psico-acustica che alla riproduzione scientifica e filologica del suono, o alla sua presa diretta, nello spazio simulato. Esse sono diventate parte dei linguaggi, creando un'aspettativa, un'accettazione e un'identificazione da parte del pubblico in questi universi sonori "artificialmente costruiti". La realtà virtuale, immersiva e non immersiva, è attualmente l'ambito in cui il margine di sperimentazione resta più aperto a future evoluzioni e nuove proposte, anche all'insegna di una simulazione scientificamente fondata sulla propagazione del suono in uno spazio acustico reale o digitalmente ricostruito. Una ricerca molto interessante, in prospettiva futura, sarà testare diversi approcci di simulazione e riproduzione sonora su un campione di utenti, in relazione a varie tipologie di ambientazioni e vari media, così da analizzare il feedback in termini di percezione, impatto estetico e cognitivo, attenzione, memorizzazione. Questi argomenti saranno trattati attraverso i contributi di ricercatori impegnati in vari campi: applicazioni immersive in ambito acustico; archeologia; archaeologia del suono; antropologia del suono e acustemologia; comunicazione; design acustico; 3D modelling; ecoarcheologia; ingegneria acustica; sound arts; video games; virtual heritage.

    This paper investigates the recent advances in parsing the Index Thomisticus Treebank, which encompasses Medieval Latin texts by Thomas Aquinas. The research focuses on two types of variables. On the one hand, it examines the impact that a larger dataset has on the results of parsing; on the other hand, performances of new parsers are analysed with respect to less recent tools. Term of comparison to determine the effective parsing advances are the results in parsing the Index Thomisticus Treebank described in a previous work. First, the best performing parser among those concerned in that study is tested on a larger dataset than the one originally used. Then, some parser combinations that were developed in the same study are evaluated as well, assessing that more training data result in more accurate performances. Finally, to examine the impact that newly available tools have on parsing results, we train, test, and evaluate two neural parsers chosen among those best performing in the CoNLL 2018 Shared Task. Our experiments reach the highest accuracy rates achieved so far in automatic syntactic parsing of the Index Thomisticus Treebank and of Latin overall.

  • L’articolo discute i resti malacologici rinvenuti a Khashuri Natsargora e Aradetis Orgora, due siti dell’Età del Bronzo/ Ferro nel bacino del Kura nella provincia georgiana di Shida Kartli (Caucaso Meridionale). Il corpus consiste in più di 500 esemplari ed include specie sia di terra che d’acqua dolce (queste ultime soprattutto per Aradetis Orgora), mentre le specie marine rappresentano una porzione estremamente marginale del totale. Il record, ottenuto attraverso la raccolta diretta in corso di scavo, include solo le specie con la conchiglia più resistente e di maggiori dimensioni, più riconoscibili ad occhio nudo e quindi rappresenta solo una parte degli inventari malacologici pertinenti alle sequenze stratigrafiche investigate. Nonostante questi limiti obiettivi, si è ritenuto opportuno presentare i dati raccolti e i risultati della loro analisi, che hanno permesso di ottenere informazioni di tipo paleoecologico e paleoeconomico non prive di interesse. L’analisi dei resti disponibili mostra una chiara predominanza di specie connesse con ambienti aperti e xerici, in sostanziale accordo sia con l’ambiente locale attuale che con i pochi dati paleoambientali disponibili. La debole variazione diacronica della composizione degli inventari suggerisce una sostanziale stabilità ecologica per entrambi i biotopi. L’abbondanza di molluschi d’acqua dolce ad Aradetis Orgora può essere spiegata con la prossimità del sito ai fiumi Prone e Kura, biotopi dai quali essi potrebbero essere stati raccolti intenzionalmente a scopi alimentari, come potrebbero suggerire alcuni paralleli da altre società dell’Età del Bronzo. The paper discusses the malacological remains recovered at Khashuri Natsargora and Aradetis Orgora, two Bronze Age/Iron Age sites located in the Kura River basin of the Shida Kartli province of Georgia (Southern Caucasus). The corpus consists of over 500 items, which include both land and (especially for Aradetis Orgora) freshwater species, while marine species represent an extremely marginal portion of the total. The record, obtained through direct collection during the excavation, included only the species with the largest and most resistant shell (therefore better recognisable with the naked eye), and represents only a part of the malacological assemblages relevant to the investigated stratigraphic sequences. Despite these objective limits, it was considered appropriate to present the collected data and the results of their analysis, as they allowed to obtain some paleoecological and paleoeconomic information that is not totally devoid of interest. The analysis on the available remains shows a clear dominance of species connected with open and xeric environments, in substantial agreement both with the present local environment and with the few available palaeoenvironmental data. The very weak diachronic variability of the assemblages seems to suggest a substantial ecological stability for both biotopes. The abundance of freshwater molluscs at Aradetis Orgora can be explained with the proximinity of the site to the Prone and Kura rivers, biotopes from which they may have been intentionally collected for use as food, as some parallels from other Bronze Age societies may suggest.

    ArCOA (Archivi e Collezioni dell'Oriente Antico) is a project launched by the CNR Institute of Heritage Science and the University of Milan. It aims at studying, digitizing and promoting the collections of Near Eastern antiquities and historical archives preserved in Italian museums and other public institutions. The ArCOA Digital Archive was conceived and developed at the CNR-ISPC for the cataloguing of the archaeological objects forming those collections. It consists of a backend using a relational database (based on the open-source DBMS MariaDB) for persistence, a browser-based interface for the synchronous recording and manipulation of data by a distributed workgroup, and a REST API service to expose interoperable data that will be queried by the project's portal. The entire system is based on the open-source PHP Web framework Laravel. The conceptual model of the relational database consists of nine entities for the description of the objects, the collections to which they belong, the collectors who formed them, the institutions where they are currently hosted, the sites of origin of the pieces, the archival documents describing them, their images and 3D models, and the related bibliography.

  • The author adopts an holistic concept of the landscape, which considers its ecological and cultural characteristics as an expression of the relationship between the human being and the environment. From this concept perspective, it she analyzes the legal protection of the landscape, conceived as a common social interest and protected by the Brazilian law through the right to an ecologically balanced environment, the right to sustainable cities and the right to cultural heritage. She investigates the legal instruments for the protection of the landscape, identifying its limitations in the light of the lack of normative definition of criteria and methodologies in the field. L'autrice adotta un concetto integrativo di paesaggio, in cui le caratteristiche ecologiche e culturali sono intese come espressione del rapporto tra l'essere umano e l'ambiente. Utilizzando questo concetto analizza la tutela giuridica del paesaggio quale bene comune diffuso, protetto dal diritto brasiliano attraverso il diritto all'ambiente ecologicamente equilibrato, il diritto alla città sostenibile e il diritto al patrimonio culturale. Tutela che si avvale degli strumenti giuridici di protezione del paesaggio; ne individua i limiti dovuti alla mancanza di normative, di criteri e di metodologie che ne concretizzino la tutela nella presa di decisioni. La autora adopta un concepto integrador de paisaje, que considera sus características ecológicas y culturales como una expresión de la relación entre el ser humano y el medio ambiente. A partir de este concepto, analiza la tutela jurídica del paisaje como un bien común difuso y protegido por el derecho brasileño a través del derecho al medio ambiente ecológicamente equilibrado, el derecho a la ciudad sostenible y el derecho al patrimonio cultural y pasa por los instrumentos jurídicos de protección paisajística, identificando sus limitaciones debido a la falta de definición normativa de criterios y de metodologías. A autora adota um conceito integrador de paisagem que considera suas características ecológicas e culturais como expressão da relação entre o ser humano e o ambiente. A partir deste conceito, analisa a proteção jurídica da paisagem como um macrobem de interesse difuso, tutelado no direito brasileiro através do direito ao meio ambiente ecologicamente equilibrado, do direito à cidade sustentável e do direito ao patrimônio cultural e percorre os instrumentos jurídicos de proteção da paisagem, identificando suas limitações pela falta de definição normativa de critérios e de metodologias, quando da tomada de decisões.

    Può il suono aumentare il coinvolgimento dei visitatori delle ricostruzioni virtuali di contesti culturali? La loro caratterizzazione acustica quali obiettivi può perseguire? Attraverso quali metodologie e sistemi di riproduzione? Come si relazionano la filologia e la creatività ai fini della conoscenza e del coinvolgimento? Può la realtà virtuale ricreare il paesaggio sonoro del passato? Sono queste alcune delle tematiche affrontate nel corso dell'evento online curato da Angela Bellia ed Eva Pietroni all'Istituto di Scienze del Patrimonio Culturale (ISPC) del CNR. L'iniziativa si inserisce nell'ambito dell'Anno Internazionale del Suono 2020-2021 (International Year of Sound - IYS 2020-21), un'iniziativa globale riferita alla "Charter of Sound" UNESCO n. 39C/59, che ha l'obiettivo di evidenziare l'importanza del suono in tutti gli aspetti della vita e dell'ambiente naturale, nonché la necessità del controllo del rumore sia nell'ambiente urbanizzato che in quello dei luoghi di lavoro, di formazione, di accoglienza e di cura, incoraggiando anche la comprensione degli sviluppi scientifici e l'applicazione tecnologica riguardante sia gli aspetti fisici del suono sia quelli della sua percezione. Il webinar mira ad esplorare come lo sviluppo di strumenti interattivi finalizzati a coinvolgere i visitatori come "soundwalker" di ricostruzioni virtuali di siti archeologici o luoghi di interesse storico-culturale e architettonico e del loro "historical soundscape" possa aprire nuove prospettive di ricerca non soltanto sulle applicazioni di Immersive Virtual Reality, ma anche sul rapporto tra suono e interazione multisensoriale in ambiente virtuale. Infatti, nel corso degli ultimi anni, attraverso l'Immersive Virtual Reality, è stato possibile sperimentare nuove opportunità di progettazione multisensoriale che combina strumenti e tecniche di modellazione e di Virtual Reality Experience in ambito acustico con il pieno coinvolgimento dell'apparato percettivo del visitatore. Si intende, dunque, porre l'attenzione su come l'esperienza immersiva multisensoriale - ed in particolare l'interazione tra vista e udito nelle ricostruzioni virtuali, senza escludere l'apporto degli altri sensi - possa favorire una più profonda comprensione dei luoghi e degli spazi dove il suono, inteso come insieme di musica, sonorità dell'ambiente e rumori, veniva prodotto e percepito. Inoltre, stimolando l'indagine sul "sonic heritage", l'incontro ha anche lo scopo di contestualizzare e valorizzare lo studio dell'antropofonia, della geofonia e della biofonia del passato e della "digital audible history" come patrimonio culturale da conoscere, preservare e comunicare anche attraverso gli strumenti e le applicazioni per l'interazione con il mondo virtuale. Tenendo conto di quanto è emerso nel corso del progetto di ricerca STESICHOROS finanziato dale Marie Sk?odowska-Curie Actions Individual Fellowship, e delle esperienze del Virtual Heritage Lab nell'ambito della realtà virtuale e della comunicazione multimediale, saranno poste le basi per un metodo innovativo che terrà conto non soltanto delle potenzialità dell'applicazione della tecnologia 3D all'acustica virtuale, ma anche della ricerca acustemologica che considera il suono come strumento di conoscenza attraverso l'intreccio di relazioni che lo lega ai luoghi, allo spazio e al corpo, fornendo nuovi strumenti di analisi e di valutazione dell'impatto delle esperienze immersive e della comunicazione sonora nel patrimonio culturale. Si discute anche di come il suono e il "soundscape" venga usato nei vari media: realtà virtuale, videogiochi, cinema, documentario, secondo regole codificate in modo diverso, al fine di conferire credibilità e verosimiglianza allo spazio simulato, di evocare situazioni e di coinvolgere percettivamente ed emotivamente il visitatore. Queste regole, che sono ormai entrate nell'industria delle grandi produzioni, seguono principi artistici più vicini alla psico-acustica che alla riproduzione scientifica e filologica del suono, o alla sua presa diretta, nello spazio simulato. Esse sono diventate parte dei linguaggi, creando un'aspettativa, un'accettazione e un'identificazione da parte del pubblico in questi universi sonori "artificialmente costruiti". La realtà virtuale, immersiva e non immersiva, è attualmente l'ambito in cui il margine di sperimentazione resta più aperto a future evoluzioni e nuove proposte, anche all'insegna di una simulazione scientificamente fondata sulla propagazione del suono in uno spazio acustico reale o digitalmente ricostruito. Una ricerca molto interessante, in prospettiva futura, sarà testare diversi approcci di simulazione e riproduzione sonora su un campione di utenti, in relazione a varie tipologie di ambientazioni e vari media, così da analizzare il feedback in termini di percezione, impatto estetico e cognitivo, attenzione, memorizzazione. Questi argomenti saranno trattati attraverso i contributi di ricercatori impegnati in vari campi: applicazioni immersive in ambito acustico; archeologia; archaeologia del suono; antropologia del suono e acustemologia; comunicazione; design acustico; 3D modelling; ecoarcheologia; ingegneria acustica; sound arts; video games; virtual heritage.
