Research data keyboard_double_arrow_right Dataset 2024Publisher:PANGAEA Authors: Schlundt, Michael; Schulz-Vogt, Heide N;Schlundt, Michael; Schulz-Vogt, Heide N;Underway temperature and salinity data was collected along the cruise track with two autonomous measurement systems, called self-cleaning monitoring boxes (SMBs). Usually, the SMBs are changed after ~24 hours. While temperature is taken at the water inlet in about 4 m depth, salinity is estimated within the SMB from conductivity and interior temperature. No temperature calibration was performed. Salinity was calibrated against discrete water samples from the inlet depth. For details to all processing steps see Data Processing Report.

The expedition took place during 2021-07-31 - 2021-08-29 from Emden - Emden (Germany) in the Northern Atlantic Ocean. Sound velocity profiles (SVP) were applied on the data for calibration. Please see environmental data and the cruise report for details. Due to technical issues of the echosounder that were encountered during the cruise, the data are erroneous. The data are unprocessed and can therefore contain incorrect depth measurements (artifacts) if not further processed. Note that refraction errors may occur when no proper SVP is applied. Acquisition and provision of the data are part of the DAM Underway Project. These data should not be used for navigational purposes.

Multibeam sonar system was Teledyne/Atlas Hydrosweep DS3. SVPs were retrieved from CTD data and synthetic profiles from World Ocean Atlas 18. SVPs were processed with HydrOffice SoundSpeedManager (https://www.hydroffice.org/soundspeed/main) and extended with World Ocean Atlas 18 (https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/archive/accession/NCEI-WOA18). SVP data were applied during acquisition. Multibeam data are unprocessed and may contain outliers and blunders and should not be used for grid calculations and charting projects without further editing. The raw multibeam sonar data in Teledyne Reson multibeam processing format (.s7k) were recorded with Teledyne PDS software. Raw data files can be processed using software packages like CARIS HIPS/SIPS. For updated vessel configuration files check further details. These data should not be used for navigational purposes.

Data were collected outside EEZs using a vessel mounted Kongsberg EM122. This data is part of the DAM (German Marine Research Alliance) underway research data project. Underway data are collected continuously on German research vessels and can include data from transits or from the entire cruise and are shared in line with the FAIR principles.

Both systems worked throughout the cruise. While temperature is taken at the water inlet in about 4 m depth, salinity is estimated within the interior TSG from conductivity and interior temperature. No temperature calibration was performed. Salinity was calibrated with independent water samples taken at the water inlet. For details to all processing steps see Data Processing Report.

Multibeam sonar system was Teledyne/Atlas Hydrosweep DS3. SVPs were retrieved from CTD data and synthetic profiles from World Ocean Atlas 18. SVPs were processed with HydrOffice SoundSpeedManager (https://www.hydroffice.org/soundspeed/main) and extended with World Ocean Atlas 18 (https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/archive/accession/NCEI-WOA18). SVP data were applied during acquisition. Multibeam data are unprocessed and may contain outliers and blunders and should not be used for grid calculations and charting projects without further editing. The raw multibeam sonar data in Teledyne Reson multibeam processing format (.s7k) were recorded with Teledyne PDS software. Raw data files can be processed using software packages like CARIS HIPS/SIPS. For updated vessel configuration files check further details. These data should not be used for navigational purposes.

Data were collected outside EEZs using a vessel mounted Kongsberg EM122. This data is part of the DAM (German Marine Research Alliance) underway research data project. Underway data are collected continuously on German research vessels and can include data from transits or from the entire cruise and are shared in line with the FAIR principles.
