    This data publication includes a grid composed by contiguous 25 x 25 km square elements covering the Italian area and each parametrized by 1) the maximum length of faults included within the cell, 2) the maximum magnitude from instrumental seismic data, 3) the maximum magnitude from historical seismic data, 4) the maximum magnitude calculated from fault length using empirical scaling laws. This collection represents the basis to a work (Trippetta et al., 2019) aiming to test a fast method comparing the geologic (faults) and the seismologic (historical-instrumental seismicity) information available for a specific region. To do so, (1) a comprehensive catalogue of all known faults and (2) a comprehensive catalogue of earthquakes were compiled by merging the most complete available databases; (3) the related possible maximum magnitudes were derived from fault dimensions, upon the assumption of seismic reactivability of any fault; (4) the calculated magnitudes were compared with earthquake magnitudes recorded in historical and instrumental time series. Faults: to build the dataset of faults for Italy, the following databases were merged: (1) the entire faults collection after the Italian geological maps at the 1:100,000 scale (available online at www.isprambiente.it); (2) the faults compilation from the structural model of Italy at the 1:500,000 scale (Bigi et al., 1989); (3) faults provided in the ITHACA-Italian catalogue of capable faults (Michetti et al., 2000); and (4) the inventory of active faults of the GNDT (Gruppo Nazionale per la Difesa dai Terremoti, Galadini et al., 2000). To improve and implement the database, published complementary studies were selected for some specific areas considered to not be exhaustively covered by the aforementioned collection of faults, including Sardinia, SW Alps, Tuscany, the Adriatic front, Puglia, and the Calabrian Arc. For these areas, faults were selected on the grounds of scientific contributions that documented recent fault activity based on seismic, field, and paleoseismological data. In particular, for the southern Sardinia, the fault pattern proposed by Casula et al. (2001) was used. For the SW Alps, the works of Augliera et al. (1994), Courboulex et al. (1998), Larroque et al. (2001), Christophe et al. (2012), Sue et al. (2007), Capponi et al. (2009), Turino et al. (2009) and Sanchez et al. (2010) were followed. For the Tuscany area, Brogi et al. (2003), Brogi et al. (2005), Brogi (2006), Brogi (2008), Brogi (2011), and Brogi and Fabbrini (2009) were consulted. For the buried northern Apennines and Adriatic front, the fault datasets provided by Scrocca (2006), Cuffaro et al. (2010), and Fantoni and Franciosi (2010) were used. For the Puglia region, data from Patacca and Scandone (2004) and Del Gaudio et al. (2007) were used, while for the Calabrian Arc data were obtained from Polonia et al. (2016). Seismicity: to obtain a complete earthquake catalogue for the Italian territory, the following catalogues of instrumental and historical seismicity were integrated: (1) the CSI1.1 database (http://csi.rm.ingv.it; Castello et al., 2006) for the period 1981–2002, (2) the ISIDe database (http://iside.rm.ingv.it/iside/; IsideWorkingGroup, 2016) for the period 2003–2017 (Figure 3) and the CPTI15 (https://emidius.mi.ingv.it/CPTI15-DBMI15/; Rovida et al., 2016) for the period 1000-1981. The CSI 1.1 database (Castello et al., 2006) is a relocated catalogue of Italian earthquakes during the period 1997–2002. This collection derives from the work of Chiarabba et al. (2005). Most seismic events are lower than 4.0 in magnitude and are mostly located in the upper 12 km of the crust. A few earthquakes exceed magnitude 5.0, and the largest event is Mw 6.0. Due to their poorly constrained location, events with Mw < 2.0 were removed. The ISIDe database (IsideWorkingGroup, 2016) provides the parameters of earthquakes obtained by integrating data from real time and Italian Seismic Bulletin earthquakes. The time-span of this compilation begins in 1985. To avoid an overlap with the CSI database, only the time interval 2003–2017 was considered. Mw = 2.0 is the lower limit used for earthquake magnitude. The CPTI15 database integrates the italian macroseismic database version 2015 (DBMI15, Locati et al., 2016) and instrumental data from 26 different catalogues, databases and regional studies starting from the 1000 up to the 2014. To avoid overlapping of data with the utilized instrumental datasets, from the CPTI2015 we took data for the period 1000-1981 in the range of Mw 4-7. Method: starting from the entire faults dataset, the length of each structure was calculated (Lf, in km). Then, the Italian territory was divided into a grid with square cells of 25 x 25 km. The length of the longest fault crossing each cell characterizes the parameter “fault length” (Lf) of the considered cell. In the second step, these lengths were used as the input parameter to empirically derive the magnitude. The equations provided by Leonard (2010), were applied for earthquake magnitude-fault length relationships to infer the Potential Expected Maximum Magnitude as M = a + b ∗ log (Lf), with a=4.24 and b=1.67. The obtained magnitudes were assigned to each single cell. Furthermore, the maximum magnitude recorded/reported in instrumental/historical catalogs is associated to each containing cell. The resulting datasets are presented in txt format and included in the following files: - Grid_Coordinates.txt (contains ID and coordinates of grid's elements)- Grid_Structure.txt (contains geometry and specifications of the used grid)- Table_results (five columns table containing 1=element ID, 2= element max fault length (Lf_max in km), 3=element max Mw from instrumental record (MwInstr_max), 4=element max Mw from historical record (MwHist_max), 5=element max Mw derived by empirical relationship (PEMM).- The full list of references is included in the file Petricca_2018-003_References.txt

    Large marine-terminating glaciers around the margins of the Greenland Ice Sheet have retreated, accelerated and thinned over the last two decades. Relatively little is known about the longer term behaviour of the Greenland Ice Sheet, yet this information is valuable for assessing the significance of modern changes. We address this by reporting 11 new beryllium-10 (10Be) exposure ages from previously uninvestigated coastal areas across southeast Greenland. The new ages are combined with existing data from the region to assess the timing of glacier retreat after the Last Glacial Maximum. The results show that deglaciation occurred first in the north of the region (~68°N) and progressed southwards. This north–south progression is attributed to the influence of the warm Irminger Current on the ice margin. Areas in the south of the region were isolated from the warm waters by the shallow bathymetry of the continental shelf. This demonstrates that oceanographic forcing paced the deglaciation of southeast Greenland through the Younger Dryas and early Holocene. In most areas of southeast Greenland bedrock ages are systematically older than their counterpart boulder samples; this offset is likely the result of inherited 10Be content in bedrock surfaces. This suggests that subglacial erosion during the last glacial cycle was insufficient to completely remove pre-existing 10Be content. Alternatively, this pattern may be the signature of a substantial retreat and advance cycle prior to final Holocene deglaciation.

    The rapid increase in the number of tidal stream turbine arrays will create novel and unprecedented levels of anthropogenic activity within habitats characterized by horizontal current speeds exceeding 2 ms−1. However, the potential impacts on pursuit-diving seabirds exploiting these tidal stream environments remain largely unknown. Identifying similarities between the fine-scale physical features (100s of metres) suitable for array installations, and those associated with foraging pursuit-diving seabirds, could identify which species are most vulnerable to either collisions with moving components, or displacement from these installations. A combination of vessel-based observational surveys, Finite Volume Community Ocean Model outputs and hydroacoustic seabed surveys provided concurrent measures of foraging distributions and physical characteristics at a fine temporal (15 min) and spatial (500 m) resolution across a tidal stream environment suitable for array installations, during both breeding and non-breeding seasons. These data sets were then used to test for associations between foraging pursuit-diving seabirds (Atlantic puffins Fratercula arctica, black guillemots Cepphus grylle, common guillemots Uria aalge, European shags Phalacrocorax aristotelis) and physical features. These species were associated with areas of fast horizontal currents, slow horizontal currents, high turbulence, downward vertical currents and also hard–rough seabeds. The identity and strength of associations differed among species, and also within species between seasons, indicative of interspecific and intraspecific variations in habitat use. However, Atlantic puffins were associated particularly strongly with areas of fast horizontal currents during breeding seasons, and European shags with areas of rough–hard seabeds and downward vertical currents during non-breeding seasons. Synthesis and applications. Atlantic puffins’ strong association with fast horizontal current speeds indicates that they are particularly likely to interact with installations during breeding seasons. Any post-installation monitoring and mitigation measures should therefore focus on this species and season. The multi-species associations with high turbulence and downward vertical currents, which often coincide with fast horizontal current speeds, also highlight useful pre-installation mitigation measures via the omission of devices from these areas, reducing the overall likelihood of interactions. Environmental impact assessments (EIA) generally involve once-a-month surveys across 2-year periods. However, the approaches used in this study show that more focussed surveys can greatly benefit management strategies aiming to reduce the likelihood of negative impacts by facilitating the development of targeted mitigation measures. It is therefore recommended that these approaches contribute towards EIA within development sites. orkney_fallofwarness_seabirdenvironmentConcurrent information on seabird distributions and environmental variables at 500m and 15min resolution in the Fall Of Warness, Orkney, UK.FOW_Seabirdenvironment_Data.csv

    Gravity cores obtained from isolated seamounts located within, and rising up to 300 m from the sediment-filled Peru-Chile Trench off Southern Central Chile (36°S-39°S) contain numerous turbidite layers which are much coarser than the hemipelagic background sedimentation. The mineralogical composition of some of the beds indicates a mixed origin from various source terrains while the faunal assemblage of benthic foraminifera in one of the turbidite layers shows a mixed origin from upper shelfal to middle-lower bathyal depths which could indicate a multi-source origin and therefore indicate an earthquake triggering of the causing turbidity currents. The bathymetric setting and the grain size distribution of the sampled layers, together with swath echosounder and sediment echosounder data which monitor the distribution of turbidites on the elevated Nazca Plate allow some estimates on the flow direction, flow velocity and height of the causing turbidity currents. We discuss two alternative models of deposition, both of which imply high (175-450 m) turbidity currents and we suggest a channelized transport process as the general mode of turbidite deposition. Whether these turbidites are suspension fallout products of thick turbiditic flows or bedload deposits from sheet-like turbidity currents overwhelming elevated structures cannot be decided upon using our sedimentological data, but the specific morphology of the seamounts rather argues for the first option. Oxygen isotope stratigraphy of one of the cores indicates that the turbiditic sequences were deposited during the last Glacial period and during the following transition period and turbiditic deposition stopped during the Holocene. This climatic coupling seems to be dominant, while the occurrence of megathrust earthquakes provides a trigger mechanism. This seismic triggering takes effect only during times of very high sediment supply to the shelf and slope.     Authors: Kelly, Daniel Clay; Nielsen, Tina M J; Schellenberg, Stephen A;

    Spatiotemporal patterns of carbonate dissolution provide a critical constraint on carbon input during an ancient (~55.5 Ma) global warming event known as the Paleocene-Eocene thermal maximum (PETM), yet the magnitude of lysocline shoaling in the Southern Ocean is poorly constrained due to limited spatial coverage in the circum-Antarctic region. This shortcoming is partially addressed by comparing patterns of carbonate sedimentation at the Site 690 PETM reference section to those herein reconstructed for nearby Site 689. Biochemostratigraphic correlation of the two records reveals that the first ~36 ka of the carbon isotope excursion (CIE) signaling PETM conditions is captured by the Site 689 section, while the remainder of the CIE interval and nearly all of the CIE recovery are missing due to a coring gap. A relatively expanded stratigraphy and higher carbonate content at mid-bathyal Site 689 indicate that dissolution was less severe than at Site 690. Thus, the bathymetric transect delimited by these two PETM records indicates that the lysocline shoaled above Site 689 (~1,100 m) while the calcite compensation depth remained below Site 690 (~1,900 m) in the Weddell Sea region. The ensuing recovery of carbonate sedimentation conforms to a bathymetric trend best explained by gradual lysocline deepening as negative feedback mechanisms neutralized ocean acidification. Further, biochemostratigraphic evidence indicates the tail end of the CIE recovery interval at both sites has been truncated by a hiatus most likely related to vigorous production and advection of intermediate waters.

    Gravity cores obtained from isolated seamounts located within, and rising up to 300 m from the sediment-filled Peru-Chile Trench off Southern Central Chile (36°S-39°S) contain numerous turbidite layers which are much coarser than the hemipelagic background sedimentation. The mineralogical composition of some of the beds indicates a mixed origin from various source terrains while the faunal assemblage of benthic foraminifera in one of the turbidite layers shows a mixed origin from upper shelfal to middle-lower bathyal depths which could indicate a multi-source origin and therefore indicate an earthquake triggering of the causing turbidity currents. The bathymetric setting and the grain size distribution of the sampled layers, together with swath echosounder and sediment echosounder data which monitor the distribution of turbidites on the elevated Nazca Plate allow some estimates on the flow direction, flow velocity and height of the causing turbidity currents. We discuss two alternative models of deposition, both of which imply high (175-450 m) turbidity currents and we suggest a channelized transport process as the general mode of turbidite deposition. Whether these turbidites are suspension fallout products of thick turbiditic flows or bedload deposits from sheet-like turbidity currents overwhelming elevated structures cannot be decided upon using our sedimentological data, but the specific morphology of the seamounts rather argues for the first option. Oxygen isotope stratigraphy of one of the cores indicates that the turbiditic sequences were deposited during the last Glacial period and during the following transition period and turbiditic deposition stopped during the Holocene. This climatic coupling seems to be dominant, while the occurrence of megathrust earthquakes provides a trigger mechanism. This seismic triggering takes effect only during times of very high sediment supply to the shelf and slope. Supplement to: Kelly, Daniel Clay; Nielsen, Tina M J; Schellenberg, Stephen A (2012): Carbonate saturation dynamics during the Paleocene-Eocene thermal maximum: Bathyal constraints from ODP sites 689 and 690 in the Weddell Sea (South Atlantic).
