    Authors: Evelien de Graaf;

    This is the datatable for my PhD within the NIKAW project. This thesis is part of the interdisciplinary NIKAW-project (Networks of Ideas and Knowledge in the Ancient World), which aims to use state of the art digital methods such as Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Social Network Analysis (SNA) to analyse the circulation of knowledge in Ancient Greek and Latin literary texts. The goal is to capture how historical and cultural changes impacted the network of citations in these texts with deep, long-lasting shifts. The first part of my contribution will focus specifically on the creation of a graph database containing mentions in these texts with as goal identifying and developing strategies for information modelling for mentions. I will populate a graph database with all mentions retrieved automatically linked to historical people. In the second part, I will analyse the citation network’s evolution with a focus on the question of how we can model the circulation of knowledge as a flow reacting to historical events. Using SNA methods, I will attempt to get a picture of the evolution of the citation network and to detect actors with similar roles in the transmission of knowledge. To provide a concrete test case, I will focus on the advent of Christianity in the period from the first to the fourth century CE. In order to see how the citation network changes as a result of cultural shock, I will focus on changes in the network after the publication of the systematizing work the Diuinae Institutiones by Lactantius (an example of endogenous shock) and after the 313 Edict of Milan (an exogenous shock).

    Authors: Niederdoeckl, Elisabeth;

    This project focuses on the use and significance of portable altars during the 11th-12th centuries in the Christian tradition, with a focus on their inscriptions and images. Portable altars were sacred objects designed to perform the Eucharistic rite, even when the Eucharist was performed outside habitual sacred spaces and ecclesiastical buildings. During the 11th-12th centuries, their use outside the basilica was strictly regulated, and it allowed them to celebrate the Eucharist even during events such as the crusades and final benedictions, as missionary and military campaigns. It is argued that portable altars were used as a means of preserving and transmitting the Christian faith during the Middle Ages, and they played a significant role in the liturgical life of the Church. They were used both inside and outside sacred spaces, and their use was regulated by the Church to prevent inappropriate usage. The inscriptions and images on the portable altars are of particular interest to the author, as they provide evidence of the main liturgical transformations and political issues in the Church at that time. One of the most significant aspects of the portable altars is the symbolism attached to their usage, which is reflected in their design and iconography. For example, the Stavelot altar features scenes from the Old Testament related to episodes from the passion of Christ, and the personification of the Church dominates over the blind Synagogue. The iconography has a strongly Paschal character, and the death of Christ is identified as fundamental within the spiritual renewal. The author suggests that the artistic choices made for the portable altars might reflect their conception, perception, and their use within the Eucharistic celebration. The project also discusses the use of linen cloth to cover the portable altars during the ecclesiastical year. The linen cloth conceals what is below, but it becomes part of the object itself and implies a boundless relationship with it. The author suggests that the perception of the artwork becomes evident by considering its various usage throughout the ecclesiastical year, particularly during Easter week. In conclusion, the project provides a fascinating insight into the role of portable altars in the Christian tradition during the Middle Ages. The use and symbolism of these objects were carefully regulated by the Church, and their inscriptions and images provide valuable evidence of the liturgical transformations and political issues of the time. The author's analysis of the portable altars' design, iconography, and usage sheds light on their conception, perception, and use within the Eucharistic celebration.

    Pierwsza wersja planu zarządzania danymi badawczymi w pięcioletnim projekcie "Warszawa/Łódź. Atlas Literatury Zagłady" pod kierownictwem prof. Jacka Leociaka, finansowanym z programu Narodowego Programu Rozwoju Humanistyki (2022-2027). Celem projektu jest popularyzacja wiedzy o historii dwóch największych gett, zorganizowanych przez nazistowskie Niemcy na terenie okupowanej Polski, z uwzględnieniem czasoprzestrzennej dynamiki wydarzeń - a zatem: udostępnienie w formie cyfrowej materiału wizualno-tekstowego, przekazującego zgromadzoną wcześniej i wypracowaną w pracy nad projektem (kwerendy) wiedzę fachową, opartą na pogłębionych badaniach - w wersji powszechnie dostępnej, korzystającej z wypracowanych już przez zespół Nowoczesnej Panoramy Literatury Polskiej możliwości łączenia kilku form narracyjnych (tekst, grafika, mapa, zdjęcia, film). Trwałym rezultatem 5-letniej pracy będzie rozbudowane cyfrowe kompendium wiedzy, stanowiace podstawę do przyszłych badań nad historią Polski oraz powszechnie dostępne źródło informacji na temat niezwykle istotnej części historii Warszawy i Łodzi, proponujące również narzędzia metodologiczne do przyszłych badań nad szczegółami topograficznego doświadczenia i drugiej wojny światowej.

    Authors: Feyaerts, Mick;

    This interdisciplinary project is concerned with the ways in which the Roman Catholic Church in the Democratic Republic of Congo/Zaïre evolved after the country’s political independence in 1960. Through specific case studies, two historians and one theologian will explore the links between the Church in all its modalities (as congregations, clergy, academic theologians, and “ordinary” believers) and the process of decolonization in order to gain insight into the process that is currently being labelled as “the decolonization of the mind”. As a female historian and anthropologist, I approach this topic through a gendered lens and limit my geographical focus to the urban environment of Kikwit. The focus on Kikwit is relevant because of the city’s substantial but manageable size (about 150.000 inhabitants in 1964, about 250.000 today), its relative accessibility (about 500 km from Kinshasa), its colonial origins and lively missionary history, the fact that it is a diocese, and the ongoing connections between Congolese and Belgian nuns. Concretely, I aim to produce an historical ethnography that explores the connections between religious women and the evolving Catholic landscape in Kikwit from the 1960s until the 1990s. I will apply archival research, oral history, and ethnographic fieldwork to answer questions concerning the Africanization and feminization of Catholic ritual and praxis, power relations within the local catholic hierarchy as well as between Kikwit and Belgium, … Contact information: mick.feyaerts@kuleuven.be

    Authors: Torp-Pedersen, Anna Sejbæk;

    Flows of illegalised border crossings are visualised with maps by Western governments. The maps render people on the move as invaders which shapes public discourse and justifies harsh migration policies of exclusion [Van Houtum, 2012]. Cartography is, in this instance, used to support a repressive power that deprives people of fundamental rights and citizenship. Simultaneously, several artists have created maps which interrupt hegemonic cartography’s iconography and representation of people on the move; it is an emergent field of artistic counter-cartographies. By presenting migrant journeys with the tool that shaped nations and notions of citizenship, any map of people on the move participates in the ongoing negotiation of access to fundamental rights, citizenship, and/or legal protection. The proposed research aims to investigate how counter-maps of people on the move produce images of communities with equal access to fundamental rights, raise political awareness of inclusivity, and promote civil engagement [Van Gelder, 2021; on photography]. I will revise the notion of cartography as a tool of the powerful to show how counter-maps perform the histories of those cartography has been used to render weak and subaltern.Therefore, I ask how we can recognise the latent power in artistic counter-maps to present people on the move as worthy of fundamental rights by investigating the potential histories these images perform against the grain of hegemonic cartography.

    This Exploitation Plan gives an overview of the joint and multiple individual exploitation paths aimed at increasing the impact of all the Key Exploitable Results developed during the SSHOC project lifetime (from January 2019 to April 2022). The Plan is aligned with the contractual obligations defined in articles 28 and 29 of the SSHOC Grant Agreement (No. 823782). The 33 Key Exploitable Results from SSHOC make available scientific evidence for policy making and enable exploitation through sustained use and/or re-use in other research activities and future funding opportunities. As such, exploitation is instrumental in concretising their value for diverse stakeholder groups, spanning end-users and in the EOSC context, detailing each result, partners involved in its development, and how it will be exploited. The Exploitation Plan stems from the activities in Work Package 8, especially Task 8.1: Governance & Sustainability which handles the overall governance of the SSHOC project, as well as from the continuous consultation processes conducted among the SSHOC Scientific Board and Project Management Board. Designed as a living record on exploitation rather than an official deliverable, it will feed into SSHOC D8.1 Governance and Sustainability Roadmap (M38; February 2022). D8.1 defines the organisational structure needed to safeguard the availability, quality, and maintenance of the results after the projects funding lifecycle, the conditions for financial sustainability and the measures for implementing the envisaged structure. D8.1 is closely linked to SSHOC D7.5 Marketplace Governance (M36; December 2021) as the guidelines delivered by Task 7.4 detail the roles of various actors and the envisaged workflow for the continuous curation of the Marketplace. The Exploitation Plan will be updated at the end of the project, when all KERs are delivered and accessible to all stakeholders at M40 (April 2022) of the SSHOC project.

    Authors: Evelien de Graaf;

    Authors: Niederdoeckl, Elisabeth;

    Authors: Feyaerts, Mick;

    Authors: Torp-Pedersen, Anna Sejbæk;
