description Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Report , Article , Preprint , Research 2011 Belgium, GermanyPublisher:Elsevier BV Authors: Phillip McCalman; Frank Stähler; Gerald Willmann;Phillip McCalman; Frank Stähler; Gerald Willmann; This paper develops an efficiency theory of contingent trade policies. We model the competition for a domestic market between one domestic and one foreign firm as a pricing game under incomplete information about production costs. The cost distributions are asymmetric because the foreign firm has to pay a trade cost. We show that the foreign firm prices more aggressively to overcome its cost disadvantage. The resulting possibility of an inefficient allocation justifies the use of contingent trade policy on efficiency grounds. Contingent trade policy that seeks to maximize global welfare can avoid the potential inefficiency. National governments, on the other hand, make excessive use of contingent trade policy due to rent shifting motives. The expected inefficiency of national policy is larger (smaller) for low (high) trade costs compared to the laissez-faire case. In general, there is no clear ranking between the laissez-faire outcome and a contingent national trade policy. ispartof: CES - Discussion paper series DPS11.05 pages:1-32 status: published

Several layers of urban waste, including ceramics, bones, glass and perhaps excrements were deposited on the floor. Faecal biomarker analyses and archaeobotanical analyses were conducted to reconstruct the history of the room. 5β-stanols of human origin, such as coprostanol, were found in the sewage channels together with mineralised plant remains, indicating a human faecal context. The botanical remains are furthermore representative of the Roman diet of the Sagalassians. Soil layers, deposited on top of the latrine floor and dating to the early Byzantine period, contained herbivore derived 5β-stanols, such as 5β-stigmastanol and epi-5β-stigmastanol. Additionally, a clear predominance of epi-5β-stanols over 5β-stanols showed that the animal dung has been subject to composting. In this period, the former latrine was clearly used as a manure production site which is further confirmed by stratigraphic evidence of large amounts of urban waste artefacts, which were commonly collected together with manure before application on the fields. The results of the present study support the theory of off-site potsherd scattering as a proxy for manuring events. Additionally, the data show key evidence for vertical migration of 5β-stanols and presumably also for the leaching of bile acids. ispartof: Journal of Archaeological Science vol:39 issue:4 pages:1143-1159 status: published

Today, it is a reliable joining technique used in automotive, HVAC and general steel constructions whilst still gaining interest. As it is not computationally feasible to include detailed sub models of these type of joints in FE simulations of real-life clinched assemblies, this paper proposes a methodology to represent these connections with simplified elements. In order to calibrate the parameters governing the equivalent model, a simple shear lap and pullout test is used. This methodology is applied to clinched configurations and validated using a modified Arcan test in which both shear and pull-out loads are considered. ispartof: NUMISHEET 2016: 10th International Conference and Workshop on Numerical Simulation of 3D Sheet Metal Forming Processes vol:734 issue:3 ispartof: Numisheet location:Bristol date:4 Sep - 9 Sep 2016 ispartof: Journal of Physics: Conference Series status: published

For further information contact us at helpdesk@openaire.eudescription Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Article 2007 BelgiumPublisher:Peeters Publishers Authors: Shchuryk, Oleh;Shchuryk, Oleh; One of the significant Christological themes elaborated by Aphrahat in his 23 Demonstrations is the mystery of Christ’s lebēš pagra‘, namely, his ‘putting on a body’. The article focuses on the analysis of selected passages from the Demonstrations, which deal with this particular issue. After a brief overview of the Christological patterns used by Aphrahat in his Treatises, it focuses the peculiarities of Aphrahat’s language, which does not depend on the Greek tradition. For example, when he talks about Christ’s ‘coming to the world’, this rather points to influence from early Syriac Christologies, such as: the ‘Acts of Thomas’ and ‘Odes of Solomon’. From the perspective of the “two-Adams” typology, the article approaches the soteriological dimension of Christ’s lebēš pagra‘. Christ is the second Adam, who ‘puts on a body’. Christ’s incarnation not only restores humankind to the glorious pre-fall status, which was lost by the first Adam, but also, as S. Brock explains, allows humankind to put on God and attain the status of divinity. This was the intention of God's creation in the beginning. This interpretation cannot be fully appreciated without the crucial notion of keyono’, which means ‘nature,’ ‘reality,’ ‘existence.’ This term sheds more light on Aphrahat’s notion of Christ’s ‘putting on a body’. Furthermore, passages from the Demonstration’s, ‘Concerning the Cluster’, reveals that any docetic suspicions, with respect to Aphrahat’s doctrine of Christ’s lebēš pagra‘, are unfounded. In conclusion, this article attempts to uncover the pedagogical aspects of Christ’s ‘dressing in the human body’. Christ, who not only puts on the corruptible and feeble body, but also elevates it to glory and honor, stands as the perfect model for the human being to follow in order to enter the divine realm. ispartof: Ephemerides Theologicae Lovanienses vol:83 issue:4 pages:419-444 status: published

Defoort;Carine M. G. Defoort; This paper traces the consecutive emergence of five important portrayals of Yang Zhu preceding his creation as philosopher in the Republic. In the late Zhou, he was seen as a debating rival and a defender of physical or personal integrity. From the Han onward, he became part of a rhetorical trope based on Mencius’ portrayal. In the Wei Jin he was a prominent figure in his own right. The fourth portrayal, from the Song onward, contained reflections on his thought in the shadow of Mozi and Confucian orthodoxy. In the late Qing, finally, Kang Youwei presented him as a minor political reformer responding to Confucius’ reform plans. These layers contributed in various ways to the nowadays almost exclusive presentation of Yang Zhu as a philosopher, a defender of social tolerance, autonomy, or individual freedom. Their rich variety has to often been sacrificed for a relatively homogeneous portrayal. ispartof: Asian Studies vol:8 issue:2 pages:235-256 status: published

In a second step I expound on the effects that the current shift from an analogous to a hybrid analogous and digital archives is producing in the self-understanding of the practices of our institution. Particularly, developing digital technology means that the Husserl Archives are entering a new phase in respect to how archival and editorial impulses will affect the presentation of Husserl’s writings. Finally, I offer some perspectives about how the planned virtual platform «digitalHusserl», which will give direct access to his manuscripts, is designed to promote a new understanding of Husserl’s specific process of philosophical writing, of his unique wording of thoughts. ispartof: Aisthesis: Pratiche, Linguaggi e Saperi dell’Estetico vol:13 issue:2 pages:79-86 status: published

For Anglican travellers in Italy, Rome had an ambiguous status. It was the seat both of high culture and of ‘superstitious’ Roman Catholic practices, including art and architecture. These extremes culminated in church buildings. This article studies the perception and reaction of English travellers in Rome towards architecture of the Roman Catholic Church and its influence on English church architecture. It will reveal the church building as an aesthetic object, in addition to possessing religious qualities, through the analysis of printed travelogues and engravings that circulated amongst the English Grand Tour travellers. By analysing the travelogue discourse — with particular attention to descriptions of specific church buildings and any intentional omissions in these descriptions — and examining the relationship between these discourses and contemporary English aesthetic theories, I will demonstrate how a certain appreciation for Roman Baroque church architecture was made acceptable and could even inspire the design of English church architecture. As will become clear, the process of travel included the separation of moral and artistic values in aesthetic appreciation. This separation made the cultural transfer between Italy and England possible in the 17th and early 18th centuries. ispartof: Architectural Histories vol:4 issue:1 pages:1-13 status: published

These problems are physically compact, often can be solved within short time limits, and have unambiguous solutions, and English versions have been normed for solving rates and levels of difficulty. Many studies on problem solving with sudden insight have taken advantage of these features in paradigms that require many quick solutions (e.g., solution priming, visual hemifield presentations, electroencephalography, fMRI, and eyetracking). In order to promote this vein of research in Italy, as well, we created and tested Italian versions of both of these tests. The data collected across three studies yielded a pool of 88 rebus puzzles and 122 compound remote associate problems within a moderate range of difficulty. This article provides both sets of problems with their normative data, for use in future research.

A functional analysis of the assemblage, along with textual and iconographic evidence, archaeozoological and palynological analyses, and chemical analysis of cooking-pot residues, contributes to the reconstruction of diet and cooking practices in Anatolia. While baked fish, vegetables, pulses, and bread are usually regarded as the staples of Byzantine peasant cuisine, diners at Sagalassos were enjoying beef stews before the Fourth Crusade, when the technique of stewing meat was allegedly introduced to the eastern Mediterranean from the West. © The American School of Classical Studies at Athens. ispartof: Hesperia vol:79 issue:3 pages:423-464 status: published
