    The Yığma Tepe of Pergamon is one of the largest known burial mounds in the Eastern Mediterranean. Its internal structure, especially the existence and location of burials, remains unknown so far because its height of 32 m and the diameter of 158 m have restricted extensive excavations. To explore the interior of the Yığma Tepe, we applied shear wave reflection profiling and traveltime tomography, locally complemented by electrical resistivity tomography. Shear wave reflection imaging enabled us to identify the layering and localize structures down to the basal surface of the mound with a metre‐scale resolution. A grid of crossing SH‐wave profiles with 4‐m line spacing covered the central mound area. The Yığma Tepe can be subdivided into three stratigraphic layers representing different construction phases, each about 10 m thick. The deepest is a consolidated layer with a locally compacted surface. SH‐wave reflection imaging verified the collapsed remains of a tunnel system and a shaft at about 30‐m depth that had been dug into the mound at the level of the basal surface at the beginning of the 20th century. The tunnel collapse created a damage zone of decreased S‐wave velocity reaching up to the overlying middle layer, in which four seismic objects of interest (SOIs) were detected. The largest of these SOIs is a north–south‐oriented structure, about 15 m long and 4 m wide. SH‐viscoelastic forward modelling showed that it likely consists of a collapsed walled cavity with a zone of loosened soil above. The third layer covers the underlying two and is enriched with large stone packages as verified by local excavations. We show the capabilities of shear‐wave reflection seismic to image small‐scale structures under complicated topographic conditions and how characteristics of cavities and volumes of decompacted soil can be evaluated by wavefield modelling.     Authors: B. N. Bjornstad;

    Exotic ice-rafted debris from the breakup of ice-dammed glacial lakes Missoula and Columbia is common in slackwater areas along the 1,100-km route for outburst floods in the northwestern US. A detailed analysis was performed at Rattlesnake Mountain, which lay beyond the limit of the former ice sheet, where an exceptionally high concentration of ice-rafted debris exists midway along the floods’ path. Here floodwaters temporarily rose to 380 m elevation (forming short-lived Lake Lewis) behind the first substantial hydraulic constriction for the outburst floods near Wallula Gap. Within the 60 km2 study area more than 2,100 erratic isolates and clusters, as well as bergmounds were recorded. Three quarters of erratic boulders are of an exotic granitic composition, which stand in stark contrast to dark Columbia River basalt, the sole bedrock in the region. Other exotics include Proterozoic quartzite and argillite as well as gneiss, diorite, schist and gabbro, all once in direct contact with the Cordilleran Ice Sheet to the north. Most ice-rafted debris is concentrated between 200 and 300 m elevation. Far fewer erratics and bergmounds lie above 300 m elevation because of the preponderance of less-than-maximum floods. Plus, larger deep-rooted icebergs were forced to ground farther away from the ancient shorelines of transient Lake Lewis. As floodwaters moved across the uneven surface of Rattlesnake Mountain, many erratic-bearing icebergs congregated into pre-existing gullies that trend crosswise to flood flow. research

    Die glazialen Sedimente der Küstenkliffe von Usedom, NE-Deutschland, sind unter besonderer Berücksichtigung der Rekonstruktion der Entwicklung des Paläomiljeus untersucht worden. Im unteren Teil des Anschnittes ist der stark gescherte Langerberg-Till aufgeschlossen. Dieser ist wahrscheinlich Teil eines marginalen Stauchmoränenkomplexes, der während eines Eisvorstoßes, vermutlich aus dem NW, abgelagert worden ist. Der Vorstoß hinterließ einen weitflächigen marginalen Eiszerfallskomplex, auf den der Ückeritz-Sand, zum Teil in wassergefüllten Becken aufgeschüttet wurde. Supraglazialer Schutt wurde sowohl in Form von Diamiktit-Lagen im Sand, als auch als sporadische Diamiktdecke auf dem Sand abgesetzt. Die untersuchte Sequenz entspricht der letzten weichselzeitlichen Deglaziation in diesem Gebiet. Die Einheiten können mit den jüngsten glazialen Ablagerungen im Westteil von Wolin, NW-Polen, korreliert werden. research

    Early‐diagenetic cementation of tropical carbonates results from the combination of numerous physico‐chemical and biological processes. In the marine phreatic environment it represents an essential mechanism for the development and stabilization of carbonate platforms. However, diagenetic cements that developed early in the marine phreatic environment are likely to become obliterated during later stages of meteoric or burial diagenesis. When lithified sediment samples are studied, this complicates the recognition of processes involved in early cementation, and their geological implications. In this contribution, a petrographic microfacies analysis of Holocene Halimeda segments collected on a coral island in the Spermonde Archipelago, Indonesia, is presented. Through electron microscopical analyses of polished samples, this study shows that segments are characterized by intragranular cementation of fibrous aragonite, equant High‐Mg calcite (3.9 to 7.2 Mol% Mg), bladed Low‐Mg calcite (0.4 to 1.0 Mol% Mg) and mini‐micritic Low‐Mg calcite (3.2 to 3.3 Mol% Mg). The co‐existence and consecutive development of fibrous aragonite and equant High‐Mg calcite results initially from the flow of oversaturated seawater along the aragonite template of the Halimeda skeleton, followed by an adjustment of cement mineralogy towards High‐Mg calcite as a result of reduced permeability and fluid flow rates in the pores. Growth of bladed Low‐Mg calcite cements on top of etched substrates of equant High‐Mg calcite is explained by shifts in pore water pH and alkalinity through microbial sulphate reduction. Microbial activity appears to be the main trigger for the precipitation of mini‐micritic Low‐Mg calcite as well, based on the presumable detection of an extracellular polymeric matrix during an early stage of mini‐micrite Low‐Mg calcite cement precipitation. Radiocarbon analyses of five Halimeda segments furthermore indicate that virtually complete intragranular cementation in the marine phreatic environment with thermodynamically/kinetically controlled aragonite and High‐Mg calcite takes place in about 100 years. Collectively, this study shows that early‐diagenetic cements are highly diverse and provides new quantitative constraints on the rate of diagenetic cementation in tropical carbonate factories. Hydrothermal quartz crystals, which occur in the Rusey Fault Zone (Cornwall, UK), show feathery textures and network-like filamentous textures. Optical hot-cathodoluminescence (CL) analysis and laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) investigations on quartz samples revealed that positions exhibiting feathery textures (violet luminescence) contain higher amounts of Al and Li than quartz positions without feathery textures (blue luminescence), while concentrations of Al and Li are significantly lower in feathery textures. Both Al and Li correlate negatively with Si. Raman spectroscopy investigations revealed the presence of a weak peak at 507–509 cm−1 in quartz affected by feathery textures, which we attribute to the presence of ≤ 5 % moganite, a microcrystalline silica polymorph, intergrown with chalcedony. The combined occurrence of feathery textures and network-like filamentous textures in quartz samples from the Rusey Fault Zone points to the presence of a metastable silica precursor (i.e., amorphous silica or silica gel) before or during the crystallization.

    Authors: Erdbrink, D. P.; Van Heekeren, H. R.;

    Die ersten Angaben über Flußterrassen in Ost-Anatolien wurden vor kurzem durch Izbirak (1962) und Ketin (1962) gemacht. Die Verfasser der vorliegenden Arbeit haben eine rasche und noch oberflächliche Exploration eines Terrassensystems von fünf bis sieben verschiedenen Niveaus ausgeführt entlang dem oberen Lauf des großen Kizil Irmak (des Roten Flusses) zwischen Sivas und Kayseri in Ost-Anatolien. Teilweise ist es die von Izbirak beschriebene Gegend, größtenteils geht sie aber über diese hinaus. Die Terrassenflächen sind ziemlich gleichmäßig entwickelt entlang des genannten Teils des Flusses, verschwinden aber plötzlich weiter unterhalb. Die Verfasser meinen mit Izbirak, daß die Entstehung dieser Terrassen wahrscheinlich in erster Linie tektonisch und erst an zweiter Stelle klimatisch bedingt ist. Die dritte Terrasse (von unten an gezählt) enthielt überall eine nur geringe Zahl vermutlicher primitiver Artefakten, unter ihnen einige „pebble-tools". Diese sind in vorliegendem Aufsatz beschrieben; sie stellen vielleicht einen Beweis für die Anwesenheit von frühpleistozänen Hominiden in der Türkei dar. In einem Fall wurde in dieser dritten Terrasse ein fossiler Molar eines Hipparion in situ gefunden, teilweise bedeckt mit demselben versteinerten roten Lehm, welcher auch einige der vermutlichen Artefakten einhüllte. Das Alter der Terrassen ist noch nicht genau bekannt. Es scheint aber, daß die ältesten und höchstgelegenen Tertiär sind, die Terrasse, welche die Artefakten enthält, vielleicht dem untersten Pleistozän angehört, und die untersten Terrassen in das junge Pleistozän oder gar Holozän zu stellen sind. research

    Authors: Limmer, Agnes; Zumbrägel, Christian; Limmer, Agnes; Institute for Advanced Study, Technical University of Munich, Garching, Germany; Zumbrägel, Christian; Department of History of Technology, Berlin University of Technology, Berlin, Germany;

    AbstractEven in the twenty-first century, myths of preindustrial forms of energy utilization are woven around watermills, waterwheels, and traditional millscapes. Along German watercourses, many grinding shops and hammer mills held on to waterwheels and delivered mechanical rather than electric power well into the twentieth century. It is not the case that the days of these “old technologies” (Edgerton 2008) were numbered as soon as hydroelectricity and “modern” hydraulic turbines appeared in the 1880s. When analyzing the dominating contemporaneous discourses around hydropower, it is easy to overlook these tendencies of historical persistence. This is not surprising, considering that scientific, literary, and preservationist narratives around 1900––actively and subtly––propagated and spread the idea ofMuehlensterben, or the myth of dying watermills that has been rehearsed over and over again in reflections on hydropower history. In this article, we challenge the popular imaginaries of “old” and “outmoded” watermills in a two-step approach. Firstly, we contrast the well-known transition at the advent of hydroelectricity with hydropower activities, which took place simultaneously in Germany’s traditional commercial landscapes. Here, waterwheels remained in good use, despite the electrification and scientific development of hydraulic turbines. Secondly, we deconstruct the romantic bias towards the preindustrial symbolism of the waterwheel by analyzing different arguments in professional journals as well as romanticizing and nostalgic literature. We combine approaches and empirical material of both historical and literary sciences to gain a better understanding of how different narratives reinforced the image of watermills and waterwheels being outdated. In this respect, the interdisciplinary approach contributes to the emerging field of theEnvironmental Humanities.

    Authors: Mania, Dietrich; Seifert, Maria; Thomae, Matthias;

    Im westlichen Geiseltal (mittleres Elbe-Saalegebiet, westlich von Merseburg) waren spätglaziale und holozäne Serien großflächig aufgeschlossen. Sie lagen auf der Niederterrasse und dem Löß der Weichselkaltzeit. Im wesentlichen handelte es sich um limnische und telmatische Sedimente. Sie zeigten eine Gliederung in fünf Sedimentzyklen mit zwei präböllingzeitlichen Intervallen (Müchelner Intervalle 1 und 2), mit Bölling, Alleröd und Holozän. Die Kaltphasen waren durch Beckenschluffe, die warmen Phasen durch Mudden und Torfe, seit dem Alleröd auch durch Charatravertinsande gekennzeichnet. Im Alleröd war die Laacher-See-Tephra eingelagert. In der Jüngeren Dryas-Zeit entstanden zum letzten Male Frostspaltennetze. Für Ältere Dryas-Zeit, Alleröd und Jüngere Dryas-Zeit wurde mit Hilfe der Pollenanalyse die Vegetationsgeschichte ermittelt. Alle Horizonte sind durch Molluskenfaunen dokumentiert, die in ihrer wechselnden Zusammensetzung den detaillierten Klimaablauf erkennen lassen. Zugleich liegt eine der bedeutendsten spätglazialen Molluskensukzessionen Mitteleuropas vor. research

    Die Entwicklung der Torfindustrie in der DDR wird in drei Zeitabschnitten dargestellt: 1) Dem Zeitraum vom Ende des Zweiten Weltkrieges bis zur Gründung der DDR, 2) der Zeit der Brenntorfgewinnung bis 1960 und 3) der Entwicklung der Hochmoortorf gewinnenden und verarbeitenden Industrie bis zum Jahre 1989. Eng verbunden mit der Entwicklung der Torfindustrie ist die Geschichte des Torfinstitutes in Rostock. Die wichtigsten Abbau- und Verarbeitungstechniken werden vorgestellt. Ein Überblick über das gegenwärtige Produktionsspektrum schließt sich an. Konflikte zwischen Torfindustrie und Naturschutz werden diskutiert. Development of the peat industry in the GDR can be reported at by dividing it into three stages: 1) The time from the end of World War II until the foundation of the GDR, 2) the time of fuel peat production up to the year 1960, 3) the development of raised bog peat production and treatment up to the year 1989. This development has a close relation to the history of the Rostock Peat Institute. The main excavation and treatment techniques are described. A survey is given on the recent production spectrum. Conflicts between the interest of peat industry and nature's conservation are discussed. DFG, SUB Göttingen, DGMT research

    It had been informed on the foundation of the Deacony Freistatt in 1899 at a deserted, burned down raised bog and the development during one hundred years. In the Deacony Freistatt nearly 130000 persons (homeless persons, young pupils and passion patients) were taken care of (working as therapy). An area of nearly 400 ha raised bog after drainage and reclamation had been used as grassland and arable land. On about 190 ha raised bog had been peat mining by hand (Sphagnum peat and fuel peat). A Village arised in a park landscape. After 1990 the whole peatland had been carried over in a foundation for nature preservation and landscape maintenance. Über die Gründung der Diakonie Freistatt 1899 im öden, totgebrannten Hochmoor und über die hundertjährige Entwicklung wird berichtet. In dieser Zeit wurden etwa 130 000 Menschen (Obdachlose, jugendliche Zöglinge, Suchtkranke) nach dem Gedanken „Arbeit als Therapie“ sozial betreut. Nahezu 400 ha Hochmoor wurden nach Entwässerung und Kultivierung über 80 Jahre als Grünland und Acker genutzt. Es entstand ein Dorf in parkähnlicher Landschaft. Etwa 190 ha Hochmoor wurden abgetorft (Weiß- und Schwarztorf/Brenntorf). Nach 1990 wurden sämtliche Moorflächen in eine Stiftung für Naturschutz und Landschaftspflege übergeführt.     The Yığma Tepe of Pergamon is one of the largest known burial mounds in the Eastern Mediterranean. Its internal structure, especially the existence and location of burials, remains unknown so far because its height of 32 m and the diameter of 158 m have restricted extensive excavations. To explore the interior of the Yığma Tepe, we applied shear wave reflection profiling and traveltime tomography, locally complemented by electrical resistivity tomography. Shear wave reflection imaging enabled us to identify the layering and localize structures down to the basal surface of the mound with a metre‐scale resolution. A grid of crossing SH‐wave profiles with 4‐m line spacing covered the central mound area. The Yığma Tepe can be subdivided into three stratigraphic layers representing different construction phases, each about 10 m thick. The deepest is a consolidated layer with a locally compacted surface. SH‐wave reflection imaging verified the collapsed remains of a tunnel system and a shaft at about 30‐m depth that had been dug into the mound at the level of the basal surface at the beginning of the 20th century. The tunnel collapse created a damage zone of decreased S‐wave velocity reaching up to the overlying middle layer, in which four seismic objects of interest (SOIs) were detected. The largest of these SOIs is a north–south‐oriented structure, about 15 m long and 4 m wide. SH‐viscoelastic forward modelling showed that it likely consists of a collapsed walled cavity with a zone of loosened soil above. The third layer covers the underlying two and is enriched with large stone packages as verified by local excavations. We show the capabilities of shear‐wave reflection seismic to image small‐scale structures under complicated topographic conditions and how characteristics of cavities and volumes of decompacted soil can be evaluated by wavefield modelling.     Authors: B. N. Bjornstad;

As floodwaters moved across the uneven surface of Rattlesnake Mountain, many erratic-bearing icebergs congregated into pre-existing gullies that trend crosswise to flood flow. research

    Authors: Persson, Kärstin Malmberg;

    Die glazialen Sedimente der Küstenkliffe von Usedom, NE-Deutschland, sind unter besonderer Berücksichtigung der Rekonstruktion der Entwicklung des Paläomiljeus untersucht worden. Im unteren Teil des Anschnittes ist der stark gescherte Langerberg-Till aufgeschlossen. Dieser ist wahrscheinlich Teil eines marginalen Stauchmoränenkomplexes, der während eines Eisvorstoßes, vermutlich aus dem NW, abgelagert worden ist. Der Vorstoß hinterließ einen weitflächigen marginalen Eiszerfallskomplex, auf den der Ückeritz-Sand, zum Teil in wassergefüllten Becken aufgeschüttet wurde. Supraglazialer Schutt wurde sowohl in Form von Diamiktit-Lagen im Sand, als auch als sporadische Diamiktdecke auf dem Sand abgesetzt. Die untersuchte Sequenz entspricht der letzten weichselzeitlichen Deglaziation in diesem Gebiet. Die Einheiten können mit den jüngsten glazialen Ablagerungen im Westteil von Wolin, NW-Polen, korreliert werden. research
