Exchanging and manipulating digital images on social networking sites offers people new ways to renegotiate a wide variety of relationships. This paper examines how interactions on Facebook transform personhood and norms for relationships and belongings among a particular group of Filipino users. By tracking historical images that index users' profiles, the argument charts the simultaneous modes in which digital photographs act in online social networks. These photographs are more than simply objects and instruments. Users' profile photographs also act as aspects of others and of the self—aspects mediated by reciprocal display, the content of the images and their histories of circulation.

Turning upon the assumption that art can, in fact, perform a function, and that its function is social, political, and/or cultural, this essay investigates the effectiveness of art as a form of activism. Not all art must be created with political intentions, but somewhere in the process, context, product, or interpretation of art lies social, political, and cultural value. Every work of art is a product of its time and place, and it is indicative of a relationship, sentiment, or occurrence in the artist’s life—and when that life belongs to a marginalized community, those relationships, sentiments, and occurrences take on a different weight. This essay will discuss how art and activism bring out positive and negative attributes in each other, helping each other in some ways and hurting each other in other ways. Finally, it will argue that art, in both its process and product, is an effective and necessary means for Indigenous peoples to engage in healing, decolonization, and social, cultural, and political processes.

In 2006, the Museum of Ethnology organized a special exhibit on everyday life in Hanoi during the “subsidy period”, the term increasingly used to describe the decade of high socialism that began in 1975 with the reunification of a divided Vietnam and ended in 1986 with the official introduction of market reforms known as Đổi mới (Renovation). The representational strategies, which linked the collectivism of the past with the individualism of the present, prompted a nationwide discussion regarding the significance of a moment that previously had no clear name or place in official accounts due to the severe hardships it produced. The details presented demonstrate how the rehabilitation of this decade has expanded the political boundaries of what state institutions can present as having historical and ethnographic value in Vietnam as well as opened new avenues for comparative studies with (former) socialist states elsewhere.

During the Renaissance, readers of accounts about the Far East faced the problem of assessing sources from a range of periods, often produced by writers who were not eyewitnesses. This article considers the responses of mapmakers and geographers to claims about the East by analysing expressions of belief, surprise, doubt and incredulity on maps and in geographical works. By considering examples from the late medieval period to the seventeenth century, it reveals important continuities to the ways in which the East, and Marco Polo, were perceived before and after sustained European contact with the Far East began. Particular attention is paid to Fra Mauro, maker of the most extensively annotated map before the age of oceanic travel to Asia; and to Giovanni Battista Ramusio, editor of the first multi-volume travel compendium.

What role does the concept of representation play in the contexts of experimentation and explanation in cognitive neurobiology? In this article, a distinction is drawn between minimal and substantive roles for representation. It is argued by appeal to a case study that representation currently plays a role in cognitive neurobiology somewhere in between minimal and substantive and that this is problematic given the ultimate explanatory goals of cognitive neurobiological research. The United States Supreme Court during the period between 1860 and 1910 has been portrayed as the source of a laissez-faire style of constitutional interpretation under which the nation and the Court largely abdicated their obligation to protect society's common interests from the ideologically conservative influences of new and powerful economic interests.;Recent trends in legal/intellectual history have moderated this critical view and have begun to rehabilitate the Supreme Court's image by placing it in a more accurately drawn intellectual context. This approach reasserts the role of ideas in shaping the law and reduces that of economic determinism. This thesis extends that trend by examining the powerful influence of antebellum Moral Philosophy, particularly as it was presented in the antebellum Protestant colleges, upon legal theory and practice during the last third of the nineteenth century.;The thesis examines the philosophical public statements and legal opinions of a select group of justices appointed after 1862 who shared exposure to an antebellum college education, to the doctrines of American Protestant theology, and to varying levels of legal education. This examination avoids, as far as practically possible, adopting a legal typology of the subject and adopts instead the typology of nineteenth-century moral science, with a view to illustrating the relationship between American Protestant theology, academic Moral Philosophy, and legal theory. This approach provides a better understanding of late nineteenth-century judicial conservatism in its own terms of reference. It demonstrates that the acceptance by conservative jurists of voluntaristic, moral view of the individual, society, and the economy led them to conclusions concerning individual liberty and responsibility, race and the question of quality, and the role and function of government profoundly different from those of late nineteenth-century reformers. It demonstrates that judicial conservatism had less to do with belief in a gospel of wealth than an attempt to preserve a vision of man and society founded upon moral values.
