A single gravesite received the successive deposition of dozens or sometimes hundreds of individuals. While cremations or even full-fired inhumation layers are often found within these funerary deposits, the actual role of fire is still poorly understood. Recently discovered within the important archaeological complex of Passy (Yonne, France), the burned collective grave of La Truie-Pendue provides an outstanding case study to examine the use of fire within Neolithic funerary rites. In this study, we develop a new contextual approach to bone alterations in order to reconstruct the original circumstances of combustion and to examine cultural motivations for the use of fire. Results of spatial statistical analyses indicate that the fire event was the first step of a procedure that sealed the grave, closed the access to the dead and signaled the end of the grave's history. Similar sealing procedures were usual elsewhere during the Late Neolithic. Finally, this study demonstrates the value of using GIS as a tool to optimize taphonomic analyses of widely fragmented and commingled skeletal assemblages.

The present thesis, rooted in the history of cultural relations between Europe and Latin America, analyses the concept of Spanish-America as it emerged in Spain in 1892 at the time of the 4th centenary of the discovery of America. Seventy years after its colonial empire had collapsed, in the shadow of the 1st Pan-American Conference (1889-90) in Washington and the 1893 Chicago World's Fair, which proclaimed the United States' dominance over the American continent, Spain organised a celebration intended to revitalise the ties of a transatlantic Spanish-American community founded on a shared language, history and cultural heritage. Officialdom and the professional middle classes joined forces to mount a commemoration that was a kind of quest for an image lost in a mirror, the reflections of which, scattered throughout a series of nationwide ceremonies, congresses and exhibitions, seem to express the mood of a nation seeking to retrieve the feeling of its own existence. Through the looking glass, the Latin American republics were by then in search of international alliances. Their political independence seemed solidly established, but the conquest of genuine cultural independence was still for them at an embryonic stage, requiring a rethinking of their Spanish heritage. In this context of an unprecedented confluence of generations arose the cultural confrontation this study seeks to highlight, disclosing the convergence feeding into the 1892 Spanish-American debate, the real and speculative extensions of which still to this day pervade relations between Spain and Latin America.

The present paper is intended as a contribution to a critical history of historiography of mathematics, in which history of mathematics is regarded as closely connected to cultural history as a whole. The focus is on analyzing the ways in which a contrast between Sanskrit and Greek mathematics was constructed in nineteenth-century Germany, as Colebrooke's English translations of Sanskrit mathematical sources spread in both philological and mathematical circles. By keeping track of the shifting significance which this contrast took on for different protagonists operating within different social contexts, one is also provided with a distinctive thread so as to unfold a more encompassing narrative. From a broader perspective, our purpose is to highlight the shaping of history of mathematics at the crossroads of philology and mathematics within nineteenth-century German academia. This is an infinite potential well defined on the positive half-axis. Each of the fundamental solutions for this conditionally integrable potential is written as an irreducible linear combination of two Hermite functions of a shifted and scaled argument. We present the general solution of the problem, derive the exact energy spectrum equation and construct a highly accurate approximation for the bound-state energy levels.
