Abstract. The last glacial period (LGP; ca. 110–10 kyr BP) was marked by the existence of two types of abrupt climatic changes, Dansgaard–Oeschger (DO) and Heinrich (H) events. Although the mechanisms behind these are not fully understood, it is generally accepted that the presence of ice sheets played an important role in their occurrence. While an important effort has been made to investigate the dynamics and evolution of the Laurentide ice sheet (LIS) during this period, the Eurasian ice sheet (EIS) has not received much attention, in particular from a modeling perspective. However, meltwater discharge from this and other ice sheets surrounding the Nordic seas is often implied as a potential cause of ocean instabilities that lead to glacial abrupt climate changes. Thus, a better comprehension of the evolution of the EIS during the LGP is important to understand its role in glacial abrupt climate changes. Here we investigate the response of the EIS to millennial-scale climate variability during the LGP. We use a hybrid, three-dimensional, thermomechanical ice-sheet model that includes ice shelves and ice streams. The model is forced off-line via a novel perturbative approach that, as opposed to conventional methods, clearly differentiates between the spatial patterns of millennial-scale and orbital-scale climate variability. Thus, it provides a more realistic treatment of the forcing at millennial timescales. The effect of both atmospheric and oceanic variations are included. Our results show that the EIS responds with enhanced ice discharge in phase with interstadial warming in the North Atlantic when forced with surface ocean temperatures. Conversely, when subsurface ocean temperatures are used, enhanced ice discharge occurs both during stadials and at the beginning of the interstadials. Separating the atmospheric and oceanic effects demonstrates the major role of the ocean in controlling the dynamics of the EIS on millennial timescales. While the atmospheric forcing alone is only able to produce modest iceberg discharges, warming of the ocean leads to higher rates of iceberg discharges as a result of relatively strong basal melting at the margins of the ice sheet. Our results clearly show the capability of the EIS to react to glacial abrupt climate changes, and highlight the need for stronger constraints on the ice sheet's glacial dynamics and climate–ocean interactions.

In many industries this has enabled the integration of large-eddy simulation (LES) in the engineering practice. Flow modelling in the wind industry though still primarily relies on models with significantly lower fidelity. This paper seeks to investigate the reasons why wind energy applications of LES are still an exception in the industrial practice. On that account, we present a survey among industry experts on the matter. The survey shows that the large runtimes and computational costs of LES are still seen as a main obstacle. However, other reasons such as a lack of expertise and user experience, the need for more validation, and lacking trust in the potential benefits of LES reveal that computational efficiency is not the only concern. Lastly, we present an exemplary simulation of a generic offshore wind farm using a GPU-resident Lattice Boltzmann LES framework. The example shows that the runtime requirements stated by a large part of the respondents can already now be fulfilled with reasonable hardware effort.

Rush; W. Rush; J. Self-Trail; Y. Zhang; A. Sluijs; H. Brinkhuis; H. Brinkhuis; J. Zachos; J. G. Ogg; J. G. Ogg; J. G. Ogg; M. Robinson;Eocene transient global warming events (hyperthermals) can provide insight into a future warmer world. While much research has focused on the Paleocene–Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM), hyperthermals of a smaller magnitude can be used to characterize climatic responses over different magnitudes of forcing. This study identifies two events, namely the Eocene Thermal Maximum 2 (ETM2 and H2), in shallow marine sediments of the Eocene-aged Salisbury Embayment of Maryland, based on magnetostratigraphy, calcareous nannofossil, and dinocyst biostratigraphy, as well as the recognition of negative stable carbon isotope excursions (CIEs) in biogenic calcite. We assess local environmental change in the Salisbury Embayment, utilizing clay mineralogy, marine palynology, δ18O of biogenic calcite, and biomarker paleothermometry (TEX86). Paleotemperature proxies show broad agreement between surface water and bottom water temperature changes. However, the timing of the warming does not correspond to the CIE of the ETM2 as expected from other records, and the highest values are observed during H2, suggesting factors in addition to pCO2 forcing have influenced temperature changes in the region. The ETM2 interval exhibits a shift in clay mineralogy from smectite-dominated facies to illite-rich facies, suggesting hydroclimatic changes but with a rather dampened weathering response relative to that of the PETM in the same region. Organic walled dinoflagellate cyst assemblages show large fluctuations throughout the studied section, none of which seem systematically related to CIE warming. These observations are contrary to the typical tight correspondence between climate change and assemblages across the PETM, regionally and globally, and ETM2 in the Arctic Ocean. The data do indicate very warm and (seasonally) stratified conditions, likely salinity-driven, across H2. The absence of evidence for strong perturbations in local hydrology and nutrient supply during ETM2 and H2, compared to the PETM, is consistent with the less extreme forcing and the warmer pre-event baseline, as well as the non-linear response in hydroclimates to greenhouse forcing.

Nat. lat. 8121 A. Conveniently this section of the codex is called Semiramis (see Dronke 1970). Based on Dronke's (1970) and Gunnell's (1995) research, the article looks further into Semiramis and discusses whether staging rather than reading it comes with a proï¬t. While discussing this hypothesis four major reasons why Semiramis would beneï¬t from being read as a dramatic script and staged can be singled out. Although the play is a distinctly Latin Semiramis shows affinities with the Anglo-Danish culture of it day and age as well as with Eddic plays, especially SkÃrnismál and Lokasenna (see Gunnell 1995).

Dependent variables in this research are the opinion of Iranian and Swedish consumers and Independent variables are pictures (model, endorser, endorser age, endorser nationality and appeal), color (colorful and black &white) and text (typeface and text concept). Based on the causal research design, I analyze how a change in the design elements affects the opinion of consumers in Iran and Sweden about the ad. This research emphasizes on three kinds of aesthetic Products including: jewelry, make up and clothing. The reason to choose the aesthetic products is because of their uniqueness comparing to other products which are to satisfy the psychological needs of the consumers. The Media that is analyzed here is visual advertisings like magazine, newspaper, billboards and posters. Theoretical investigation was the data collection through secondary data; it was the library study, reading 151 articles and books related to the subject of this research; the primary data collection was through my own experience of cultural differences and also interview with advertisers in both countries and the finally the experiment targeted to the consumers. To do the experiment, a number of 200 females between 20-30 (100 Swedish and 100 Iranian) are chosen and they are asked to choose the ad which mostly attracts their attention. Ads are wisely chosen and each of them analyzes the change in one of the design elements and its effectiveness in attracting the attention of the consumers. This research is started with the purpose of the research and the research problem, then I bring the theoretical insights, the research questions and their relevant hypothesis; finally I bring the methodology, the experiment and the interviews and in the end, I do a qualitative analysis of the results. Based on the result of the research, picture and text are very competitive in attracting the attention of the consumers to the ad. Aesthetic product advertisement is more effective in both countries if there is a use of an endorser instead of the product image; endorsers are most likely to be celebrities, in the age of below 20 and from a mix of nationalities; ads are most likely to be colorful and use the Serif typefaces. In designing the ads for the aesthetic products in Iran it is more effective to use the sex appeal while in Sweden it is more effective to use the slice of life appeal. Finally consumers in Iran are more attracted to the ad by the impression of the text concept comparing to Swedes. The keywords of this research are: Design, Advertising, Aesthetic products and Cultural investigation

Nyckelord: Ogifta [unmarried], gifta [married], oäkta barn [bastards], fosterbarn [foster children], vandel [repute], fattigvård [poorhouse], normalitet [normality], avvikande [abnormal], värderingar [values]
