The Libido for the Ugly and The Middle Eastern Bazaar are two important texts in Advanced English. Both of them are description. However, they show significant differences in aspect of objectivity, use of figure of speech and language features, etc. Through a comparative study of the differences between The Libido for the Ugly and The Middle Eastern Bazaar, this paper aims to help readers to improve their understanding of the two texts, so as to further help readers to deepen their appreciation of the textual features of classic descriptive texts.

This paper explores the derivation mechanism of oblique object constructions in Mandarin Chinese. Based on the Morphological Fusion and the Minimize Exponence in Distributed Morphology, this paper proposes that the oblique object is assigned by the preposition and then the verb, which is intransitive, and the preposition undertakes morphological fusion. As a result, the verb is spelled out in the phonetic components and the oblique object occurs directly after the verb. We infer that “Ta chi shitang” (He eats in the canteen) and “Ta zai shitang chifan” (he eats in the canteen) have different generation mechanisms by exploring the different generation mechanisms of “Ta chi shitang” (He eats in the canteen) and “Ta zai shitang chifan”(he eats in the canteen). They cannot be converted from each other.

This paper adopts a Labeling approach to the analysis of the double object construction (DOC). In conformity with Chomsky’s (2013, 2014, 2015) Labeling Algorithm (LA), a unified account is proposed of the derivation of DOC in Mandarin Chinese. It is argued that the pair-Merged element in a complex verb in the DOC is invisible for labeling and the normal labeling procedure for the Head will apply.

As an emerging discipline in 2011, culturomics belongs to cultural studies mainly by way of diachronic research and large-scale corpora, so it could be significative for the etymology and trend studies. In this paper, a large-scale diachronic corpus was established based on culturomics, and the condition and quality basic-level category vocabulary (BLCV) is taken as examples for analyses, so as to obtain relevant data and conclusions. It is shown that about 90% of the condition and quality BLCV was originated earlier than Sui, Tang and the Five Dynasties, and the first-level BLCV is earlier than the second-level and the third-level in aspect of origin time. The higher BLCV level, the greater the use rate increase, with more obvious stable development in the diachronic respect. Thus, culturomics, as a new paradigm in linguistic researches, is confirmed to be feasible, distinctive and irreplaceable in an era of big data.

This study reports on a small-scale study exploring the effects of using corpora in the process of revising essays in English as a foreign language (EFL). 30 undergraduate students from two College English Classes in China participate in the experiment. The BFSU CQP web is used for assisting experimental group to correct the lexico-grammatical errors in writing. The findings reveal that corpora as reference resources are more helpful than the online dictionary in helping learners make accurate corrections and reduce errors in free production. The following questionnaires indicate that participants generally show positive attitudes toward corpus use in writing. However, there are also some challenges to overcome while using corpora such as too much time spent in analyzing data, too many examples in the concordance lines and so on. These findings suggest the need for more well-planned corpus-based activities to help learners benefit as much as possible from corpora-assisted learning.

The Chinese translation of sinological works is a unique translation phenomenon, because although these sinological works are written in English, they reflect the social life of China and are full of Chinese cultural elements. Based on the studying of the textual features sinological literature and the current situation of sino logyical translation in China, this paper analyzes the back translation techniques commonly used in the translation of sinological works.

Chaozhou Opera, selected in the first batch of national intangible cultural heritage protection list, is an ancient Chinese opera. It has been spread overseas with Chaozhou people and has become one of the most influential local opera in China, also homesickness sustenance for many overseas Chinese people. In 2013, the General Secretary Xi Jinping proposed the strategy on the construction of the “21st Century Maritime Silk Road”, which has clearly pointed out to strengthen the cultural communication and cooperation in the “Maritime Silk Road” regions. Thailand is an important country on the Silk Road. Therefore, this article takes the development of Chaozhou Opera in Thailand as the research object, analyzes the present situation of Chaozhou Opera in Thailand, points out its bottleneck and puts forward the development strategy.

This paper analyzes the supernatural elements of Shakespeare’s plays from several aspects. It first introduces the historical background of Shakespeare’s writing career. Then, it analyzes supernatural elements in three of his great plays and introduces how the supernatural elements are represented on stage in old Elizabethan period and in modern times. Last, it provides the modern implications to the 21 st century viewers of Shakespeare’s plays.

This paper first briefly looks at the previous studies done on female language from 1970s till now. Then it makes a brief analysis of some of the distinctive features of female language. Explanations about the reasons as to why these feature exist are offered from the physiological, psychological, social historical and social cultural standpoint. Finally, some changes about the woman language in recent years are expounded.
