Abstract We estimate the wage penalty associated with working in the South African informal sector. To this end we use a rich data set on non‐self‐employed males that allows one to accurately distinguish workers employed in the informal sector from those employed in the formal sector and link individuals over time. Implementing various econometric approaches we find that there is a gross wage penalty of a little over 18% for working in the informal sector. However, once we reduce our sample to a group for which we can reasonably calculate earnings net of taxes and control for time‐invariant unobservables, the wage penalty disappears.

A structural analysis has been carried out along the south-east margin of the Chambishi–Nkana Basin in the Central African Copperbelt, hosting the world-class copper and cobalt (Cu–Co) Nkana orebody. The geometrically complex structural architecture is interpreted to have been generated during a single NE–SW-oriented compressional event, clearly linked to the Pan-African Lufilian orogeny. This progressive deformation resulted primarily in asymmetric multiscale parasitic fold assemblages, characterised by non-cylindrical NW–SE-oriented periclinal folds that strongly interfere laterally, leading to fold linkage and bifurcation. The vergence and amplitude of these folds consistently reflect their position along an inclined limb of a NW-plunging megascale first-order fold. A clear relation is observed between the intensity of parasitic folding and the degree of shale content in the Copperbelt Orebody Member (COM), which hosts most of the ore. Differences in fold amplitude, wavelength and shape are explained by changes in mechanical stratigraphy caused by lateral lithofacies variation in ore-bearing horizons. In addition, strong differences in strain partitioning occur within the deforming basin, which is interpreted to be in part controlled by changes in mechanical anisotropy in the layered rock package. Several studies on sentence processing suggest that the mental lexicon keeps track of the mutual expectations between words. Current DSMs, however, represent context words as separate features, thereby loosing important information for word expectations, such as word interrelations. In this paper, we present a DSM that addresses this issue by defining verb contexts as joint syntactic dependencies. We test our representation in a verb similarity task on two datasets, showing that joint contexts achieve performances comparable to single dependencies or even better. Moreover, they are able to overcome the data sparsity problem of joint feature spaces, in spite of the limited size of our training corpus. Comment: 5 pages

This paper describes how a tokenizer can be trained from any dataset in the Universal Dependencies 2.1 corpus (UD2) (Nivre et al., 2017). A software tool, which relies on Elephant (Evang et al., 2013) to perform the training, is also made available. Beyond providing the community with a large choice of language-specific tokenizers, we argue in this paper that: (1) tokenization should be considered as a supervised task; (2) language scalability requires a streamlined software engineering process across languages.

On the basis of emerging evidence from patients with COVID-19, we postulate that endothelial cells are essential contributors to the initiation and propagation of severe COVID-19. Abstract. The precipitation variations of Longxi area, northeast margin of the Tibetan Plateau since AD 960 are reconstructed from Chinese historical documentary records. These records show that since AD 960, the precipitation of Longxi decreased and reached the lowest level at the end of the 17th and the 18th centuries. After this period, the precipitation gradually increased. The three short wet periods of Longxi in the last millennium were: from the end of the 10th century to the early years of the 11th century, from the end of the 12th century to the early years of the 13th century and during the first half of the 20th century. The precipitation variations coincide well with variations of the Northern Hemisphere temperature and the atmospheric 14C concentration, as well as the averaged 10Be concentration and the reconstructed solar modulation record which show that solar activity may be an important driving force of the precipitation variations of Longxi on multi-decadal to centennial scales during the last millennium. Solar activity controls the motion of the north edge of the Asian summer monsoon by affecting the Asia summer monsoon intensity, the East Asian winter monsoon intensity and the locations of westerlies, thus further dominating precipitation variations of Longxi. Synchronous variations of Longxi precipitation and Northern Hemisphere temperature may also be ascribed to the same control of solar activity.
