The topic of the long poem Jamerika: trip (2013) by Maša Kolanović is a family trip to America, a place previously known to the female narrator only through popular Western culture. This article analyses her interpretation of the binary opposition of East and West and the position of Croatia in that context. The narrator is aware that those two worlds are not completely separated, but intertwined by many relationships such as popular culture, wars and terrorism. The opposition of American abundance and poverty causes dramatic tensions in the text, which are supported by visual collages, comic strips and newspaper clips, but also by different types of intertextuality. The postmodern parodic turn of this long poem equates all ideologies as false and indicates that cultural and political oppositions are human constructs that are imposed on everyday life.

Evidence is presented on the synonymy of Hancockitettix humeratus Storozhenko et Pushkar, 2017 syn. nov., (a recently described species from the Cameron Highlands of the Malay peninsula (the only recorded specimen, a female holotype, caught in 2014)) and Eufalconius pendleburyi Gunther, 1938, a long-time-no-see species from Bukit Kutu of the Malay peninsula (the only recorded specimen, a female holotype, caught in 1926) — 100 km S of the Cameron Highlands and part of the same massif (Tenasserim range: Titiwangsa Mts.). The holotypes of the two species are conspecific, almost identical in morphology. As a result Hancockitettix Storozhenko et Pushkar, 2017 syn. nov. becomes a junior synonym of Eufalconius Gunther, 1938. The original description of Hancockitettix syn. nov. and H. humeratus syn. nov. contains much more data than that of Eufalconius and E. pendleburyi and serves as a very good ‘re-description’. New records of E. pendleburyi found on the social media photo database Flickr from the same massif (Endau Rompin NP, Bukit Fraser) are presented herein. Detailed comparison is given between the genera Austrohancockia Gunther, 1938, Discotettix Costa, 1864, Eufalconius, Gibbotettix Zheng, 1992, Hancockella Uvarov, 1940, Paragavialidium Zheng, 1994, and Platygavialidium Gunther, 1938.

In this article we present an knowledge extraction approach that can be used in systems that implement teaching in a fully automated manner. These systems are called Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITS) and are conceived around the idea of one-to-one teaching. Many such systems use natural language processing to improve the communication interface between student and the system. These techniques can be also used on the content creator side to semi- automate or fully automate the task of teaching content creation. In such systems the knowledge representation plays a crucial role to successfully implement teaching and encourage learning. The output of the knowledge extraction phase is a knowledge in the form of a hyper graph that can be used for adaption to the students current knowledge level. We present a deep neural network architecture for precise POS tagging of words written in languages that are morphologically rich. Using sparse representations for words in this task increases the vector space and makes learning more complex. This problem can be solved to some extent by using traditional vector representations but there is also the problem with representing words that are ambiguous. Proposed architecture uses a Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers (BERT) model that is pre-trained on Croatian language to achieve state-of-the-art accuracy for POS tagging.

Climate change is expected to have a severe impact on cultural heritage in the future. This study presents the methodology developed during the FP7 project Climate for Culture, of assessing the climate change impact on collection objects in cultural heritage buildings. The main innovation lies in coupling new high resolution future climate projections with building simulation tools in order to predict future indoor climate and identify future risks in historic buildings. The case study is an intermittently heated wooden chapel in Croatia. The whole building simulation model of the chapel was validated using a newly developed method of accuracy assessment in the context of preventive conservation. Even though modeling intermittent heating induces limitations in the model, it can be used for computing of future indoor data. Future indoor climate data was assessed for possible risks of biological, mechanical, and chemical damage to painted wooden panels using the newly developed specific climate risk assessment. When using this method of damage assessment on buildings with active climate control, especially with intermittent heating, it is recommended to determine the relevant season for the damage process in order to objectively analyze results.

Autor je u radu prikazao zdravstvenu skrb na valpovačkom vlastelinstvu na temelju zapisa u vlastelinskim knjigama prihoda i rashoda tijekom prvih desetljeća postojanja vlastelinstva. Analizirajući podatke zabilježene u vlastelinskim knjigama prihoda i rashoda, nastojao je utvrditi pružatelje i korisnike zdravstvene skrbi, karakteristike zdravstvene skrbi i kretanje visine troškova za pružanje zdravstvene skrbi. Pritom je nastojao utvrditi biografije pojedinih pružatelja zdravstvene skrbi (ranarnika). Isto je tako nastojao na temelju analize visine troškova pojedinih kategorija zdravstvene skrbi utvrditi opseg pruženoga zdravstvenog tretmana. Autor je također nastojao aktivnosti vlasnika posjeda i njegovih službenika u organiziranju zdravstvene skrbi na vlastelinstvu staviti u kontekst državne politike stvaranja javnozdravstvene službe tijekom 18. stoljeća.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine the event experience in the context of event attendees (visitors) and event participants, as well as the relationship between the intensity of the experience and a repeat visit to the event. Design – Objectives of the research are: 1) to analyse if event experience vary depending on the type of event, 2) to analyse if event experience of event attendees differs from those of event participants, 3) to analyse if event experience differ depending on of attendees and participants' gender, 4) to determine impact of participants and visitors' intensity of the event experience on their repeated visit. Methodology – Data was collected though three different self-complete questionnaires on a sample of 185 visitors and 276 participants of events held in tourist destination Vrsar, in Istria County. Research was conducted from March through September 2015. Approach – The research methodology was based on two fundamental approaches which include the use of descriptive and inferential analyses. Hypotheses were tested using Pearson Chi-Square Test, Kruskal Wallis test and Mann-Whitney tests with Bonferroni correction. Findings – Events’ visitors and participants have different experiences on different type of events. A more detailed analysis showed that different experiences vary depending on events’ visitors and participants’ gender and type of event (sports, cultural or artistic). Analysis of impact of event experiences on repeated visits shows that increases of experience intensity have impact on repeated visits. Originality of the research – In the paper, the relationship was determined between the experience intensity and a repeat visit to the event, which means that a high quality designed event is the basis of the sustainable development of the event.

AbstractThis study assesses the prevalence and distribution of caries, antemortem tooth loss, abscesses, calculus, alveolar bone resorption, and tooth wear in two large composite archaeological series from Croatia in order to determine the effects that long‐term, endemic warfare had on dental health and nutrition. The first series consists of dental material belonging to three cemeteries dated to the late medieval period (1100–1400), a period characterised by rapid social development, increased urbanisation, growth of trade, and an increase of monetary economy. The second belongs to three cemeteries from the early modern period (1400–1700) during which time Croatia was exposed to incessant Ottoman raiding and the gradual subjugation and incorporation of various Croatian territories into the Ottoman Empire.Analyses of 4,789 permanent teeth belonging to adult males and females show significantly lower frequencies of carious lesions, abscesses, alveolar resorption, and heavy dental wear during the early modern period suggesting a significant change in alimentary habits with, surprisingly, better nutrition and a higher dependence on proteins during the period that Croatia was involved in low‐intensity, endemic warfare.The improvement in dental health noted in the Ottoman period series was the result of a combination of circumstances that includes mass emigration of local populations caused by incessant Ottoman raiding, the resulting economic decline and wholesale abandonment of these territories, and the subsequent resettlement of these territories by a new group of peoples known as Vlachs who practised a different subsistence strategy based on pastoralism and cattle farming.

The work of Andrija Mohorovičić (1857–1936) had a large impact on the development of seismology, both in Croatia and world-wide. This paper presents a chronological survey of the development of seismology in Croatia providing context for the discovery of the Mohorovičić discontinuity in 1910. The development of early Croatian seismology was strongly influenced by advances in the field made in both Europe and world-wide. It also was influenced by several strong earthquakes that occurred within its territory, most notably the 1880 Zagreb earthquake, and the 1909 Kupa Valley (Pokupsko) earthquake. By studying the seismograms from the Kupa Valley earthquake, Mohorovičić was able to prove the existence of the boundary layer between the Earth's crust and the mantle (the Mohorovičić discontinuity). After Mohorovičić retired in 1921, seismological research in Croatia lost much of it's momentum, and for 20 years no seismological papers were published. After World War II, the Geophysical Institute was incorporated into the Faculty of Science of the University of Zagreb, and seismologists became active once more. Beginning in the second half of the twentieth century, the scientific interests of Croatian seismologists broadened, and international cooperation intensified. During that time, the number of active seismologists in Croatia varied, but never exceeded twelve, all of whom were affiliated with the Department of Geophysics of the Faculty of Science at the University of Zagreb. This small seismological community bore the responsibility of maintaining high standards in seismological research and education, and of keeping Croatian seismology visible in the world of geophysical sciences.

The paper presents the results of a comparative study on a frequency of the representation and implementation of teaching a cultural heritage content outside classroom on an elementary level in Slovene and Croatian primary schools. Learning cultural heritage content should derive from the students’ personal proximity which enables them to learn and experience cultural heritage more easily. Didactic recommendations for teaching cultural heritage content in school subjects Environmental studies and Social studies in elementary level encourage teachers to apply active learning methods-especially experiential learning, which is performed also in authentic environment outside classroom. The research was based on a descriptive and non-experimental empirical research method, in which 750 participating teachers were included. Results show that teaching cultural heritage content outside the classroom is performed 2 to 4 times a year in Slovenia and also in Croatia. In planning and performing learning about cultural heritage content majority of teachers in both countries collaborate with experts from various institutions and organizations. Mostly, they collaborate with museums, galleries and various societies – such as cultural society and society for preservation of cultural heritage.
