    A controversy over the pudgala or “person” raged among Indian Buddhists for more than a millennium. Their polemics were at least as much a matter of canonical exegesis as of reasoning and argument, for the “mainstream” Buddhist doctors had to account for—and explain away—the numerous places in scripture where the Buddha speaks of the “person.” The Bhārahārasūtra or “sūtra on the bearer of the burden” was one of the scriptures most frequently quoted and discussed in this connection. The present paper is aimed at presenting a reconstructed Sanskrit version of this sūtra and providing an overview of the doctrinal and argumentative uses that were made of it in the context of the debates about the status of the “person.”

    La fouille réalisée en 2016 par le service archéologique de Reims Métropole sur le site de Chouilly « La Grifaine » a été l’occasion de compléter nos connaissances sur les hypogées de la Marne. L’examen détaillé de l’état sanitaire des sujets issus de l’hypogée F10 a mis en exergue la récurrence de différents traumatismes et de lésions dégénératives qui plaident en faveur d’une activité spécifique qui pourrait être en lien avec l’extraction du silex. Les indices ostéologiques concernent essentiellement les individus inhumés dans les niveaux les plus récents et témoignent, soit d’une modification du recrutement des individus inhumés, soit d’une évolution des activités au cours du temps. The excavation carried out in 2016 by the Service Archéologique de Reims Métropole on the site of Chouilly "La Grifaine" was an opportunity to complete our knowledge of the hypogeums of the Marne. The detailed examination of the health of the subjects from hypogeum F10 highlighted the recurrence of various traumas and degenerative lesions that suggest a specific activity that could be linked to flint extraction. The osteological evidences concern essentially the individuals buried in the most recent levels and testify either a change in the recruitment of individuals, or an evolution of activities over the time.

    Résumé Dans le Ḥālāt-i Pahlawān Muḥammad (« Les États spirituels de Muḥammad Le Champion », 899/1493), le grand polygraphe timouride Mīr ʿAlī Shīr Nawāʾī (844-906/ 1441-1501) retrace la carrière d’un champion de lutte qui fut aussi un célèbre mystique. Nawāʾī avait rencontré le Champion lorsqu’il avait lui-même dû trouver refuge à Machhad au début des années 860/fin des années 1450 et les deux hommes restèrent ainsi de proches compagnons jusqu’à la mort de Pahlawān Muḥammad en 899/1493 à Niʿmatābād (une bourgade située dans les environs de Hérat). Bien qu’issu d’une famille d’éminents lutteurs, Pahlawān Muḥammad brillait aussi par ses talents de musicien, de poète, de médecin et d’astrologue. Le récit de Nawāʾī plonge alors son lecteur dans un univers qui se situe au croisement de ces diverses pratiques, depuis les soirées littéraires (majlis) qui réunissaient la haute société de la capitale timouride jusqu’aux activités charitables de l’hostellerie soufie (takiya) du Champion. Inscrit dans le genre hagiographique par son titre, le texte se distingue cependant des ḥalāt et manāqib traditionnels de plusieurs façons. La vie de l’athlète soufi est d’abord envisagée du point de vue des relations que ce dernier entretenait avec l’auteur. Nawāʾī est ainsi un acteur de premier plan dans cette biographie héroïque et le rôle qu’il tient l’incite à jouer avec les codes de l’hagiographie. N’hésitant pas à se mettre en scène dans un dialogue savoureux, il tourne en dérision sa propre crédulité face à ce qu’il est tenté d’interpréter au départ comme l’expression d’un pouvoir surnaturel du Champion et qui n’est en définitive que l’ultime témoignage de son tempérament et de ses mérites exceptionnels, autant de qualités qui constituent pour le poète naqshbandī la vraie nature de l’ethos soufi.

    International audience; The 7th century CE was a turning point in the evolution of North Africa, with the Arab-Muslim conquest ushering in a period of decisive change. This study seeks to develop a grid for reading the contemporary historiography on this period. We begin by focusing on the origins of studies of the topic and then turn to a division between Western and Arab authors, in order to provide a sense of the geographical specificities of the extant scholarship. In doing so, we are able to see how the Arab conquest and the arrival of Islam in the region have been represented, and then observe the gradual development of the scholarship on this period into a fully-fledged field of historical studies.

    Résumé La rose (gül en turc) est un symbole bien connu dans le soufisme, en particulier dans la poésie mystique. Métaphore de l’épineuse beauté divine que le rossignol adule, la fleur hérite d’interprétations supplémentaires dans les manuels confrériques, à partir notamment de hadiths apocryphes. L’un de ces écrits, le Traité de la rosace d’Ibrāhīm el-Eşrefī el-Qādirī, cheikh de la branche Eşrefiyye de la Qādiriyya ottomane, explique les significations symboliques de trois représentations de rose sous forme de rosaces cousues sur le couvre-chef porté par les soufis. L’article soutient que les lectures précédentes du traité ont peut-être manqué le véritable enjeu du texte. Pour les mystiques musulmans, par-delà la question du hadith, la rose est bien une métaphore de l’épanouissement du Prophète parmi les humains manifestant la présence de Dieu. Mais plus précisément, la traduction du traité révèle que son auteur envisage la rose comme un signe dont les sens cachés ne sont connus que de quelques maîtres soufis (tels quelques roses dans le désert) ayant reçu mission prophétique et faveur divine.

    L’intégration de la région nord-africaine au sein de l’Empire musulman fut l’occasion pour de nombreux historiens, géographes et autres spécialistes de s’intéresser à la contrée, de recréer une histoire de sa conquête et par la suite de dresser un tableau plus large, qui englobe divers aspects comme la société ou l’économie de la région. Leurs écrits constituent donc des sources majeures pour mieux comprendre le contexte de la conquête. Dans le présent travail, nous avons rassemblé des témoignages issus des récits arabes sur la présence matérielle du paganisme dans la région nord-africaine. Ainsi, à partir de l’étude de la notion de «ṣanam / aṣnām», deux grands axes sont développés, d’une part les vestiges matériels et d’autre part la toponymie comme souvenir d’un passé païen.

    Abstract In the depiction and analysis of various transtextual sources and rewritings, this article discusses narratives of Chinese late imperial xiaoshuo that dealt with dreams perceived as equally important if not more valuable than waking life itself. The discourse of these dream stories aimed at underlining the significance of the value granted to dreams, and consequently how this perspective on dreams could affect one’s stance towards life itself. With an emphasis on the eighteenth century, examples comprise narratives from lesser-known collections, such as Xieduo 諧鐸 by Shen Qifeng (1740?–?), but the author also highlights earlier texts—Daoist classics, chuanqi 傳奇 of the Tang, and chuanqi of the Ming—which served as sources for these late imperial tales. Although the theme of life-long dreams is found across the centuries and literary genres, this article points to its various treatments, that differed according to time periods and authors’ personal concerns. It highlights a shift in “life-long dream” stories of the late imperial period towards a concern for private matters, depicted in a detached and/or light-hearted tone.

    Taking as a starting point the expression ‘virtuosa osadía’ that appears in the prologue Al que leyere, this study proposes to consider the theme of feminine boldness as a possible key for reading María de Zayas's Novelas amorosas y ejemplares. Indeed, the ‘virtuosa osadía’ that the feminine authorial voice claims in the paratext resonates with a network of words in the text (atrevimiento, locura, libertad, determinación, ánimo, arrojarse, aventurarse) that form the contours of a «feminine boldness» that truly inhabits Zayas’s text. The second part of our study analyses the different figures of feminine boldness, studying in particular the expression of female desire, the women who appropriate male roles and attributes (weapons, the act of speaking and writing in a culture where the models offered to women are models of silence), and finally, their impact on space. Finally, the study analyses the limits of this feminine boldness, in particular through a systematic study of the resolutions (or denouements) of the plots in the fiction.; Tomando como punto de partida la expresión ‘virtuosa osadía’ que aparece en el prólogo Al que leyere, el presente estudio propone considerar la temática del atrevimiento femenino como una posible clave de lectura de las Novelas amorosas y ejemplares de María de Zayas. En efecto, la ‘virtuosa osadía’ que la voz autorial femenina reivindica en el paratexto entra en resonancia con una red de palabras en el interior del texto (atrevimiento, locura, libertad, determinación, ánimo, arrojarse, aventurarse) que conforman los contornos de un “atrevimiento femenino” que habita verdaderamente el texto zayesco. La segunda parte de nuestro estudio analiza las diferentes figuras del atrevimiento femenino, estudiando, en particular, la expresión del deseo femenino, las mujeres que se apropian roles y atributos masculinos (las armas, la palabra, la pluma), y por fin, su incidencia en el espacio. Por fin, el estudio analiza los límites de este atrevimiento femenino, en particular a través de un estudio sistemático de los desenlaces.; Prenant comme point de départ l’expression ‘virtuosa osadía’ qui apparaît dans le prologue Al que leyere, cette étude propose de considérer le thème de l’audace féminine comme une possible clé de lecture des Novelas amorosas y ejemplares de María de Zayas. En effet, la « vertueuse audace » que la voix d’auteur féminine revendique dans le paratexte entre en résonance avec un réseau de mots au sein même du texte (atrevimiento, locura, libertad, determinación, ánimo, arrojarse, aventurarse) qui dessinent les contours d’une « audace féminine » qui habite véritablement le texte de María de Zayas. La deuxième partie de notre étude analyse les différentes figures de l’audace féminine, en étudiant notamment l’expression du désir féminin, les femmes qui s’approprient des rôles et des attributs masculins (les armes, la parole, la plume), et enfin, l’incidence de cette audace féminine sur l’espace. Enfin, l’étude examine les limites de cette audace féminine, notamment à travers une analyse systématique des dénouements.

    Si les Germaniques sont venus en grand nombre visiter la France entre le XVe et le XVIIe siècle, certains ont particulièrement apprécié ses édifices antiques, médiévaux et modernes comme en témoignent leurs journaux ou relations de voyage. Quelques-uns ont rédigé des Itinéraires ou Délices, consacrés en grande partie à la France, qui signalent les plus remarquables bâtiments, tels le géographe Matthias Quadt en 1603 (Deliciæ Galliæ sive Itinerarium per universam Galliam), le juriste Paul Hentzner en 1618 (Itinerarium Germaniæ, Galliæ, Angliæ, Italiæ). L’Ulysses belgico-gallicus (1631) d’Abraham Gölnitz qui voyagea en France de 1624 à 1626, eut un succès européen et fut rapidement imité. Dans la seconde moitié du XVIIe siècle les étrangers d’Europe du Nord recoururent volontiers à la Topographia Galliæ publiée à Francfort à partir de 1655 par Caspar Merian. Quelle fut leur influence réelle sur la réception de l’architecture française ? Although many Germans visited France between the 15th and 17th centuries, some particularly appreciated its ancient, medieval and modern buildings, as revealed by their travel journals and accounts. Some wrote Itinéraires or Délices, devoted chiefly to France, which single out the most remarkable buildings, such as geographer Matthias Quadt in 1603 (Deliciæ Galliæ sive Itinerarium per universam Galliam) and the lawyer Paul Hentzner in 1618 (Itinerarium Germaniæ, Galliæ, Angliæ, Italiæ).     Nous présentons dans ce papier les travaux que nous avons réalisés pour convertir dans le modèle Ontolex-Lemon l'une des plus importantes ressources lexicographiques pour le français : le Trésor de la Langue Française. En effet, malgré l'utilisation généralisée de cette ressource, son format actuel, basé sur XML, ne respecte pas les standards les plus récents de la représentation des données lexicographiques, notamment ceux basés sur les données liées. Nos travaux mettent en lumière la nécessité d'établir des mécanismes permettant d'augmenter l'inter-opérabilité des ressources et des technologies pour créer et maintenir des ressources lexicographiques. In this paper, we report our efforts to convert one of the most comprehensive lexicographic resources of French, the Trésor de la Langue Française, into the Ontolex-Lemon model. Despite the widespread usage of this resource, the original XML format seems to impede its integration in language technology tools. In order to breathe new life into this resource, we examine the usage and the conversion to more interoperable formats, primarily those based on the linguistic linked data, to provide this resource to a broader range of applications and users.     A controversy over the pudgala or “person” raged among Indian Buddhists for more than a millennium. Their polemics were at least as much a matter of canonical exegesis as of reasoning and argument, for the “mainstream” Buddhist doctors had to account for—and explain away—the numerous places in scripture where the Buddha speaks of the “person.” The Bhārahārasūtra or “sūtra on the bearer of the burden” was one of the scriptures most frequently quoted and discussed in this connection. The present paper is aimed at presenting a reconstructed Sanskrit version of this sūtra and providing an overview of the doctrinal and argumentative uses that were made of it in the context of the debates about the status of the “person.”

    La fouille réalisée en 2016 par le service archéologique de Reims Métropole sur le site de Chouilly « La Grifaine » a été l’occasion de compléter nos connaissances sur les hypogées de la Marne. L’examen détaillé de l’état sanitaire des sujets issus de l’hypogée F10 a mis en exergue la récurrence de différents traumatismes et de lésions dégénératives qui plaident en faveur d’une activité spécifique qui pourrait être en lien avec l’extraction du silex. Les indices ostéologiques concernent essentiellement les individus inhumés dans les niveaux les plus récents et témoignent, soit d’une modification du recrutement des individus inhumés, soit d’une évolution des activités au cours du temps. The excavation carried out in 2016 by the Service Archéologique de Reims Métropole on the site of Chouilly "La Grifaine" was an opportunity to complete our knowledge of the hypogeums of the Marne. The detailed examination of the health of the subjects from hypogeum F10 highlighted the recurrence of various traumas and degenerative lesions that suggest a specific activity that could be linked to flint extraction. The osteological evidences concern essentially the individuals buried in the most recent levels and testify either a change in the recruitment of individuals, or an evolution of activities over the time.

    Résumé Dans le Ḥālāt-i Pahlawān Muḥammad (« Les États spirituels de Muḥammad Le Champion », 899/1493), le grand polygraphe timouride Mīr ʿAlī Shīr Nawāʾī (844-906/ 1441-1501) retrace la carrière d’un champion de lutte qui fut aussi un célèbre mystique. Nawāʾī avait rencontré le Champion lorsqu’il avait lui-même dû trouver refuge à Machhad au début des années 860/fin des années 1450 et les deux hommes restèrent ainsi de proches compagnons jusqu’à la mort de Pahlawān Muḥammad en 899/1493 à Niʿmatābād (une bourgade située dans les environs de Hérat). Bien qu’issu d’une famille d’éminents lutteurs, Pahlawān Muḥammad brillait aussi par ses talents de musicien, de poète, de médecin et d’astrologue. Le récit de Nawāʾī plonge alors son lecteur dans un univers qui se situe au croisement de ces diverses pratiques, depuis les soirées littéraires (majlis) qui réunissaient la haute société de la capitale timouride jusqu’aux activités charitables de l’hostellerie soufie (takiya) du Champion. Inscrit dans le genre hagiographique par son titre, le texte se distingue cependant des ḥalāt et manāqib traditionnels de plusieurs façons. La vie de l’athlète soufi est d’abord envisagée du point de vue des relations que ce dernier entretenait avec l’auteur. Nawāʾī est ainsi un acteur de premier plan dans cette biographie héroïque et le rôle qu’il tient l’incite à jouer avec les codes de l’hagiographie. N’hésitant pas à se mettre en scène dans un dialogue savoureux, il tourne en dérision sa propre crédulité face à ce qu’il est tenté d’interpréter au départ comme l’expression d’un pouvoir surnaturel du Champion et qui n’est en définitive que l’ultime témoignage de son tempérament et de ses mérites exceptionnels, autant de qualités qui constituent pour le poète naqshbandī la vraie nature de l’ethos soufi.

    International audience; The 7th century CE was a turning point in the evolution of North Africa, with the Arab-Muslim conquest ushering in a period of decisive change. This study seeks to develop a grid for reading the contemporary historiography on this period. We begin by focusing on the origins of studies of the topic and then turn to a division between Western and Arab authors, in order to provide a sense of the geographical specificities of the extant scholarship. In doing so, we are able to see how the Arab conquest and the arrival of Islam in the region have been represented, and then observe the gradual development of the scholarship on this period into a fully-fledged field of historical studies.

    Résumé La rose (gül en turc) est un symbole bien connu dans le soufisme, en particulier dans la poésie mystique. Métaphore de l’épineuse beauté divine que le rossignol adule, la fleur hérite d’interprétations supplémentaires dans les manuels confrériques, à partir notamment de hadiths apocryphes. L’un de ces écrits, le Traité de la rosace d’Ibrāhīm el-Eşrefī el-Qādirī, cheikh de la branche Eşrefiyye de la Qādiriyya ottomane, explique les significations symboliques de trois représentations de rose sous forme de rosaces cousues sur le couvre-chef porté par les soufis. L’article soutient que les lectures précédentes du traité ont peut-être manqué le véritable enjeu du texte. Pour les mystiques musulmans, par-delà la question du hadith, la rose est bien une métaphore de l’épanouissement du Prophète parmi les humains manifestant la présence de Dieu. Mais plus précisément, la traduction du traité révèle que son auteur envisage la rose comme un signe dont les sens cachés ne sont connus que de quelques maîtres soufis (tels quelques roses dans le désert) ayant reçu mission prophétique et faveur divine.

    L’intégration de la région nord-africaine au sein de l’Empire musulman fut l’occasion pour de nombreux historiens, géographes et autres spécialistes de s’intéresser à la contrée, de recréer une histoire de sa conquête et par la suite de dresser un tableau plus large, qui englobe divers aspects comme la société ou l’économie de la région. Leurs écrits constituent donc des sources majeures pour mieux comprendre le contexte de la conquête. Dans le présent travail, nous avons rassemblé des témoignages issus des récits arabes sur la présence matérielle du paganisme dans la région nord-africaine. Ainsi, à partir de l’étude de la notion de «ṣanam / aṣnām», deux grands axes sont développés, d’une part les vestiges matériels et d’autre part la toponymie comme souvenir d’un passé païen.

    Abstract In the depiction and analysis of various transtextual sources and rewritings, this article discusses narratives of Chinese late imperial xiaoshuo that dealt with dreams perceived as equally important if not more valuable than waking life itself. The discourse of these dream stories aimed at underlining the significance of the value granted to dreams, and consequently how this perspective on dreams could affect one’s stance towards life itself. With an emphasis on the eighteenth century, examples comprise narratives from lesser-known collections, such as Xieduo 諧鐸 by Shen Qifeng (1740?–?), but the author also highlights earlier texts—Daoist classics, chuanqi 傳奇 of the Tang, and chuanqi of the Ming—which served as sources for these late imperial tales. Although the theme of life-long dreams is found across the centuries and literary genres, this article points to its various treatments, that differed according to time periods and authors’ personal concerns. It highlights a shift in “life-long dream” stories of the late imperial period towards a concern for private matters, depicted in a detached and/or light-hearted tone.

    Taking as a starting point the expression ‘virtuosa osadía’ that appears in the prologue Al que leyere, this study proposes to consider the theme of feminine boldness as a possible key for reading María de Zayas's Novelas amorosas y ejemplares. Indeed, the ‘virtuosa osadía’ that the feminine authorial voice claims in the paratext resonates with a network of words in the text (atrevimiento, locura, libertad, determinación, ánimo, arrojarse, aventurarse) that form the contours of a «feminine boldness» that truly inhabits Zayas’s text. The second part of our study analyses the different figures of feminine boldness, studying in particular the expression of female desire, the women who appropriate male roles and attributes (weapons, the act of speaking and writing in a culture where the models offered to women are models of silence), and finally, their impact on space. Finally, the study analyses the limits of this feminine boldness, in particular through a systematic study of the resolutions (or denouements) of the plots in the fiction.; Tomando como punto de partida la expresión ‘virtuosa osadía’ que aparece en el prólogo Al que leyere, el presente estudio propone considerar la temática del atrevimiento femenino como una posible clave de lectura de las Novelas amorosas y ejemplares de María de Zayas. En efecto, la ‘virtuosa osadía’ que la voz autorial femenina reivindica en el paratexto entra en resonancia con una red de palabras en el interior del texto (atrevimiento, locura, libertad, determinación, ánimo, arrojarse, aventurarse) que conforman los contornos de un “atrevimiento femenino” que habita verdaderamente el texto zayesco. La segunda parte de nuestro estudio analiza las diferentes figuras del atrevimiento femenino, estudiando, en particular, la expresión del deseo femenino, las mujeres que se apropian roles y atributos masculinos (las armas, la palabra, la pluma), y por fin, su incidencia en el espacio. Quelques-uns ont rédigé des Itinéraires ou Délices, consacrés en grande partie à la France, qui signalent les plus remarquables bâtiments, tels le géographe Matthias Quadt en 1603 (Deliciæ Galliæ sive Itinerarium per universam Galliam), le juriste Paul Hentzner en 1618 (Itinerarium Germaniæ, Galliæ, Angliæ, Italiæ). L’Ulysses belgico-gallicus (1631) d’Abraham Gölnitz qui voyagea en France de 1624 à 1626, eut un succès européen et fut rapidement imité. Dans la seconde moitié du XVIIe siècle les étrangers d’Europe du Nord recoururent volontiers à la Topographia Galliæ publiée à Francfort à partir de 1655 par Caspar Merian. Quelle fut leur influence réelle sur la réception de l’architecture française ? Although many Germans visited France between the 15th and 17th centuries, some particularly appreciated its ancient, medieval and modern buildings, as revealed by their travel journals and accounts. Some wrote Itinéraires or Délices, devoted chiefly to France, which single out the most remarkable buildings, such as geographer Matthias Quadt in 1603 (Deliciæ Galliæ sive Itinerarium per universam Galliam) and the lawyer Paul Hentzner in 1618 (Itinerarium Germaniæ, Galliæ, Angliæ, Italiæ). Ulysses belgico-gallicus (1631) by Abraham Gölnitz, who travelled around France between 1624 and 1626, was a success in Europe and was rapidly imitated. In the second half of the 17th century, foreigners from northern Europe readily used the Topographia Galliæ published in Frankfurt in 1655 by Caspar Merian.     Nous présentons dans ce papier les travaux que nous avons réalisés pour convertir dans le modèle Ontolex-Lemon l'une des plus importantes ressources lexicographiques pour le français : le Trésor de la Langue Française. En effet, malgré l'utilisation généralisée de cette ressource, son format actuel, basé sur XML, ne respecte pas les standards les plus récents de la représentation des données lexicographiques, notamment ceux basés sur les données liées. Nos travaux mettent en lumière la nécessité d'établir des mécanismes permettant d'augmenter l'inter-opérabilité des ressources et des technologies pour créer et maintenir des ressources lexicographiques. In this paper, we report our efforts to convert one of the most comprehensive lexicographic resources of French, the Trésor de la Langue Française, into the Ontolex-Lemon model. Despite the widespread usage of this resource, the original XML format seems to impede its integration in language technology tools. In order to breathe new life into this resource, we examine the usage and the conversion to more interoperable formats, primarily those based on the linguistic linked data, to provide this resource to a broader range of applications and users.
