description Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Article 2012 CyprusPublisher:Inderscience Publishers Authors: Gergatsoulis, Manolis; Gaitanou, Panorea;Gergatsoulis, Manolis; Gaitanou, Panorea;Περιέχει το πλήρες κείμενο In the recent decades, we have witnessed a tremendous proliferation of metadata schemas, particularly in the cultural heritage domain. As a consequence, cultural heritage communities face a growing need to integrate these schemas as they encounter a number of problems, mainly concerning interoperability issues and loss of implicit knowledge. In this paper, we present a semantic mapping of VRA Core 4.0, a cultural heritage metadata schema describing visual resources, to CIDOC CRM. The mapping rules are expressed formally using a path-based mapping language called Mapping Description Language (MDL). More specifically, each element of the schema (along with its subelements and attributes) is mapped to the equivalent CRM path (represented as a sequence of classes and properties). In case an attribute is assigned to an element/subelement, this is also mapped to equivalent CRM paths, expanding the semantic correspondences between the two schemas. This work is part of a semantic integration scenario, where CIDOC CRM acts as a mediation schema.

This led us to study the metadata elements hosted in various heterogeneous schemas by local inventories, used to describe different types of immovable monuments. In order to achieve some form of semantic interoperability, a series of crosswalks was defined among a derived schema hosting metadata elements from various inventories and official metadata standards that are used to describe architectural works. This allowed us to identify which of these schemas would better fit in these records, in order to reduce semantic heterogeneity. We also highlight weaknesses and adequacies of these standards in the description of immovable monuments, placing particular emphasis in the inevitable semantic gap. Finally, a quantitative measure was defined for the degree of different types of coverage of a source schema by a target schema in order to evaluate the appropriateness of standards. Copyright.
