    The significance of university-industry collaboration becomes even more pronounced within the pharmaceutical R&D context. Such collaborations provide a platform to address potential challenges by offering access to cutting-edge research, specialized facilities, and expertise. Collaborative models, such as multi-university partnerships and university-industry contract research, have emerged as viable methods to support innovation in the pharmaceutical industry. Such collaborations have facilitated universities in accessing invaluable resources from their industrial counterparts, while industries have benefited from enhanced technological capabilities and foundational scientific knowledge. This symbiotic relationship not only benefits the primary stakeholders but also has broader societal implications, as it accelerates the transfer of scientific results to the market. This research adopts a broad definition of pharmaceutical university-industry R&D collaboration. The primary objective is to gain insights to answer the overarching question: How to manage innovation in pharmaceutical university-industry R&D practices? To answer this, the present research employs both quantitative (Chapters 2 and 3) and qualitative (Chapters 4 and 5) methodologies, with a multi-level analysis encompassing landscape- (Chapter 2), collaboration- (Chapter 3), university- (Chapter 4), and company (Chapter 5) perspectives. Based on the landscape perspective, Chapter 2 uses a bibliometric approach to analyze historical and emerging topics in the pharmaceutical UIC R&D context. The study identifies a rise in related publications, emphasizing the research’s importance. The comprehensive review categorizes publications into three levels that are industrial and organizational innovation strategy, -structure, and -culture. The chapter advocates for broader engagement by academic and commercial entities, emphasizing the potential of R&D alliances in the pharmaceutical industry, where university-industry collaborations are particularly promising. Chapter 3, using Neglected Tropical Diseases as the focal point, delves into whether the type of PPPs influences the initiation and duration of NTD-related clinical trials. The research identifies various collaborative types, among which NGO- and public sector-led collaborations are the major subtypes. Key determinants shaping these collaborations encompass scientific, logistical, political, and financial aspects. The chapter emphasizes the pivotal role companies play in combating NTDs, either independently or within public-private partnerships. The identified characteristics and determinants provide suggestions for practitioners to further optimize R&D strategies. Chapter 4 delves into the micro-foundations of dynamic capabilities within the university technology transfer process, drawing from empirical cases of the Industry Alliance Office and the Demonstrator Lab. For sensing capabilities, this chapter underscores the importance of timely identification of opportunities through internal competencies and external partnerships. On the seizing front, the research highlights the critical role of universities in aligning with industrial entities to maximize detected opportunities, emphasizing resource co-allocation and collaborative business models. Reconfiguring capabilities are important for universities to position themselves as central orchestrators within the broader of university-industry ecosystem. It is also important for partnering companies and academic entrepreneurs to employ dynamic capabilities with the aim of academic entrepreneurship. Chapter 5 delves into the micro-foundations of dynamic capabilities essential for academic entrepreneurship within the university-industry ecosystem. It emphasizes that sensing capabilities empower them to strategically allocate resources and address potential challenges. The chapter also underscores the significance of seizing capabilities in facilitating knowledge integration and partnership management. To ensure sustained innovation, it is important for high-tech enterprises to develop reconfiguring capabilities. To further research pharmaceutical UIC R&D innovation management, Chapter 6 then puts forward various recommendations to different stakeholders including universities, research institutes, startup companies, and regulatory agencies. Chapter 6 also adds some of the limitations of Chapters 2-5, based on which the present research hopes to provide some suggestions for future research.

    Adaptive reuse of cultural heritage can be a valid strategy to recover heritage buildings in a state of abandonment or underuse, as well as to implement the circular economy model in cities and regions, contributing to the achievement of climate objectives, to social cohesion, wellbeing and quality of life, making cities more attractive, safe, sustainable and resilient. The aim of this paper is to develop and test an ex-ante evaluation methodology to support participatory decision-making processes for the adaptive reuse of cultural heritage according to the circular economy perspective. A multidimensional and multicriteria evaluation framework was experimented in the city of Salerno, Italy, to assess alternative solutions for the adaptive reuse of four large historic buildings in abandonment, and identify a satisfying solution based on interactions with local stakeholders. The TOPSIS (Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution) multi-criteria evaluation method was used to compare adaptive reuse project alternatives including stakeholder objectives and preferences. Starting from 14 adaptive reuse proposals, the participative evaluation methodology supported stakeholders in the identification of 4 preferable solutions further developed and co-designed, as well as in the search of a final satisfying solution engaging diverse stakeholders groups. Moreover, operational circularity criteria for the adaptive reuse of cultural heritage were identified. The results of the study show the potential of Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) mixed with participative methods for co-design and co-evaluation to support inclusive decision-making processes for circular adaptive reuse of cultural heritage.

    Covid-19 created tremendous uncertainty in the tourism industry; in this study, we use social media data to explore differences in the preferences and attitudes of tourism consumers, both before and during the pandemic. We use natural language processing (NLP) techniques to analyze over one million Reddit posts on travel-related subreddits. We investigate the preference for city and nature-oriented tourism in selected destinations; the analysis demonstrates that nature tourism gained interest during Covid-19 in destinations with rich nature resources, whereas city tourism lost interest in destinations known for city tourism. We also classify Reddit authors into two categories: conservation and openness, according to a psychological theory of personal values, and show that this is predictive, with openness associated with positive travel sentiment and low risk awareness. This points to the potential for value-based segmentation of travel consumers based on theoretically-grounded NLP analysis of social media data.

    Seventeenth- and eighteenth-century artist biographers documented the mobility of early modern Netherlandish artists. Yet, research into the movements of Dutch and Flemish artists still fails to capture the full significance of this essential aspect of the artistic profession. This article presents a novel approach to artist mobility, by applying Michael Baxandall's interpretation of the artwork as “a solution to a problem” to a selection of artworks by Northern artists in late-sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Naples. By analyzing itinerant artists’ abilities to solve the challenges they faced as foreigners in the Spanish Viceroyalty, this study offers new insights into their creativity. The Adult Attachment Interview (AAI) is a protocol-based, semi-structured interview method widely used to measure adults’ states of mind with respect to attachment. Recently, transcripts of this interview have been used to code secure base script knowledge, which is script-like knowledge related to the way parents dealt with their distress during childhood (ie., child went to parent for comfort, parent provided instrumental and emotional support, child went back to play). Manually coding the verbatim transcripts is labor-intensive and requires a lot of centralized training. The potential integration of machine learning and natural language processing (NLP) techniques may automate certain aspects of AAI analysis, potentially optimizing the process. The aim of this research project is to explore the practical application of these technologies in analyzing AAI transcripts.The project uses data from a pooled set of 12 studies originating from four countries. Upon reviewing the 1,410 AAI transcripts in this set (conducted in three languages), notable discrepancies in the administration of the interviews emerged, some of which may affect the suitability of the interview to assess secure base script knowledge. The first focus of this research project is therefore to develop a model to automatically assess the quality of the transcripts, first for English studies and then for all studies and languages. This model will prioritize evaluating interview characteristics, including instances of unintelligibility and non-adherence to the prescribed AAI protocol. As a next step in the project, employing sentiment analysis will enable an investigation into the correlation between participant-provided adjectives and their corresponding narratives. Finally, this research project will explore the possibility of automatically coding secure base script knowledge in AAI transcripts. By combining technological advances with nuanced human insights, this research project not only provides a pathway toward research studies at scale, but also presents an opportunity to achieve a deeper understanding of emotional and cognitive dimensions within attachment narratives.

    The coming attraction film trailer has successfully maintained its prominent role within film promotion for over a hundred years. This article explores the shifting historical status of the trailer within the film industry and how industry trade press reported on its development and widespread adoption. Across this period these publications worked to delineate the discursive borders within which trailer debate occurred: from attacks on the trailer’s usefulness to related claims of accuracy and fidelity. Exploring the creation of this discourse challenges the idea that the increasingly negative tone around the film trailer in the 21st century is a uniquely modern phenomenon. The article argues that these initial industry strategies need to be understood in relation to key cultural and industrial concerns around commerce and artistry, critical cultural gatekeeping, and broader interests in forecasting. By focusing on a largely overlooked element of the classical Hollywood system, we demonstrate how trailers existed in a disputed space within that system: a crucial promotional tool but also a creatively potent film text.

    ABSTRACTAuthigenic Mg‐calcite and dolomite are frequently observed in restricted, evaporative environments, such as lagoon or lake systems, but their formation is difficult to capture due to slow growth rates. Lake Neusiedl, an alkaline and subhaline lake with a mean water depth of 0.7 m in Austria, offers a natural system to study the precipitation of Ca‐Mg‐carbonate phases, which occur as fine‐grained, unconsolidated and largely homogenized mud. To elucidate the timing and formation mechanisms of these authigenic carbonate phases, the mineralogical and isotopic composition and radiocarbon age of different sediment grain‐size fractions from <0.2 to >3.0 μm were analysed. X‐ray diffraction analyses show two broad peaks of Mg‐calcite and protodolomite (lacking ordering peaks), suggesting that the carbonates are authigenic rather than detrital in origin. Calibrated carbon‐14 ages range between 200 cal yr bp and 3700 cal yr bp. The linear correlation of age and grain size suggests a very slow growth rate of single crystals of 0.23 to 0.60 μm/ka. These rates suggest an extremely slow sedimentation rate in a shallow lake that existed during most of the Holocene. The higher abundance of protodolomite in older grain fractions, in contrast to the presence of high‐Mg calcite in the youngest fractions, suggests a growth succession where high‐Mg calcite develops first and subsequently transforms into protodolomite. Much higher ages of 6 cal ka bp to 15 cal ka bp are measured in carbonates of lake deposits exposed on land, in a section north‐west of the recent lake, suggesting a growth rate of those carbonate minerals of 0.13 μm/ka. These time constraints further suggest that some carbonate grains could already have nucleated from lake water before or during the last glacial maximum, although under slightly different hydrochemical conditions.

    Due to the fluctuating feed-in of renewable energies, controllable power plants such as highly efficient CHP plants (combined heat and power) will continue to be required to cover the residual load. Gas engines and turbines currently dominate the natural gas-based CHP market due to their low investment costs and acceptable electrical efficiency. In the event of a future fuel switch due to the energy transition from natural gas to hydrogen, fuel cell systems are becoming increasingly important due to their very high efficiency and improved dynamics in hydrogen operation and can therefore represent an alternative to gas engines and turbines. In addition to a possible fuel switch, good dynamic and full heat utilization represents an additional challenge for CHP systems. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the influence of a fuel switch from natural gas to hydrogen on the operation of a fuel cell (PAFC) in terms of efficiency, heat utilization and dynamics. It was shown that the electrical efficiency of the hydrogen-operated PAFC is significantly higher than in natural gas operation due to the omitted reformer and the associated reformer losses. In hydrogen operation, there is also no limitation of the dynamics by the reformer. Furthermore, in hydrogen operation there is a more favorable ratio of high-temperature to low-temperature heat, which facilitates the use of heat. Detailed and validated simulation models in Aspen Plus are used as the basis for this investigation. CA Biebl

    In opdracht van Galerie Salomon Lilian is een paneelschilderij dat is toegeschreven aan Jan Steen (1626 – 1679) dendrochronologisch onderzocht. Het paneel verbeeld een tafereel uit de Griekse mythologie waarin Erysichthon zijn dochter Mestra verkoopt. Het paneel bestaat uit een enkele eiken (Quercus sp.) plank. Hierin zijn 223 jaarringen aanwezig. Er is geen spinthout aanwezig. De laatste jaarring kan gedateerd worden in 1623. Om de ondergrens van het kapinterval te bepalen moeten hier rekening gehouden worden met minimaal negen ontbrekende spinthoutringen, plus een aantal jaar voor het drogen van het hout. Hiermee komt het vroegst mogelijke kapjaar in 1632 te liggen, hoewel dit realistischer een aantal jaren later valt en daarmee overeenkomt met de actieve periode van Jan Steen.

    Authors: Ma, Zhongxuan;

CA Biebl

    Authors: van Daalen, Sjoerd;

    In opdracht van Galerie Salomon Lilian is een paneelschilderij dat is toegeschreven aan Jan Steen (1626 – 1679) dendrochronologisch onderzocht. Het paneel verbeeld een tafereel uit de Griekse mythologie waarin Erysichthon zijn dochter Mestra verkoopt. Het paneel bestaat uit een enkele eiken (Quercus sp.) plank. Hierin zijn 223 jaarringen aanwezig. Er is geen spinthout aanwezig. De laatste jaarring kan gedateerd worden in 1623. Om de ondergrens van het kapinterval te bepalen moeten hier rekening gehouden worden met minimaal negen ontbrekende spinthoutringen, plus een aantal jaar voor het drogen van het hout. Hiermee komt het vroegst mogelijke kapjaar in 1632 te liggen, hoewel dit realistischer een aantal jaren later valt en daarmee overeenkomt met de actieve periode van Jan Steen.
