However, it is unclear how ELS affects the brain and cognitive development. Identifying specific relationships of ELS with the genetic and brain-related underpinnings of cognitive development may reveal biological mechanisms responsible for the negative impact of ELS and those that lead to individual differences in sensitivity (or resilience) to ELS. In this study, to investigate the interlinked processes of cognitive development, we analyzed the multimodal data of DNA genotypes, brain imaging (MRI), and neuropsychological assessment (NIH Toolbox) outcomes of 4,276 children (ages 9 to 10 years, European ancestry) from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) study. We estimated the genetic influence on cognitive capacity using genome-wide polygenic scores (GPSs). Our regression and mediation analyses revealed significant causal relationships for the gene-brain-cognition pathway: Brain structural development significantly mediated the genetic influence on cognitive development (partial mediation effect = 0.016, PFWE<0.001). Interestingly, within the triangular relationship, we found a significant moderation effect of abuse only on the gene-to-brain pathway (Index of Moderated Mediation = −0.007; 95% CI= −0.012 ∼ −0.002; PFWE<0.05). These findings indicate the negative modulatory effects of ELS on the genetic influence on brain structural development that lead to disadvantageous neurocognitive development in prepubertal children.

For a 7 pmol sample of intact glycoprotein, RNase B, a solid ionic matrix DHB‐aniline‐sodium enabled a regioselective in‐source decay (ISD) and glycan‐selective ionization as a sodium adduct ion, [M+Na]+. This matrix significantly reduced the formation of peptide‐fragment‐derived ions, and a high‐mannose‐type glycan pattern was observed. This ISD product ion was formed by selective cleavage of the reducing end of the glycan by 0,2A or 2,4A type cross‐ring cleavage. Pseudo‐MS3‐type post‐source decay (PSD) analysis of an A type ion indicated the regioselectivity of the ISD fragmentation and the glycan sequence. Combining ISD glycomics with conventional ISD proteomics will accelerate quality control for glycoprotein drugs and biomarker discovery.

However, it is well-known that short-term disturbances can also cause vegetation switches when multiple stable vegetation states exist. We studied paleovegetation changes within the alternative stable states framework using stable carbon isotopes (relative abundance of C3-C4 vegetation) on the cellulose fraction from two high-resolution radiocarbon-dated peat cores ~170 m apart in the Sandynallah valley: Core 1 closer to the hillslope (32,000 years old) and Core 2 from the centre of the valley (45,000 years old). Core 1 is located in an ecotone showing shola-sedgeland dynamics with vegetation switching at c.22 ka from shola (possibly due to fire) to a prolonged unstable state until 13 ka sustained by low waterlogging. Following a hiatus c.13 ka, sedgeland dominates, with a shift into shola at 3.75 ka driven by increasing aridity. Core 2 shows a stable sedgeland mixed C3-C4 composition responding to temperature, enriched in C3-vegetation in the last glacial with C4-dominance beginning c.18.5 ka, indicative of deglacial warming. The distinctive vegetation states at corresponding times in Cores 1 and 2 within the same valley, responding independently to disturbances and climate, respectively, is the first paleo-record from an alternative stable states landscape in the montane tropics. Thus, short-term disturbances and site attributes need to be accounted for before ascribing vegetation change to changing climate in such vegetation mosaics. International audience

Abstract The goal of the present study was to replicate and extend previous research that demonstrated the incremental validity of narrative identity in predicting psychological well-being among Korean adults. We recruited 147 Korean adults living in South Korea who completed a battery of questionnaires that assessed the Big Five traits, extrinsic value orientation, self-concept clarity, and psychological well-being. Participants then wrote a story about how they had become the persons they were, which was subsequently coded in terms of agency. We found that psychological well-being was positively related to extraversion, agreeableness, openness, conscientiousness, and self-concept clarity, but negatively to neuroticism and extrinsic value orientation. The positive relation between agency, coded from narratives, and psychological well-being was significant both with and without controlling for the other variables. These results showed that narrative identity has incremental validity in predicting well-being among individuals who live in a culture where collectivism and individualism coexist.

Modelling experiments indicate a seasonal alternation in cross-equatorial flow induced by the seasonal reversal in the direction of the monsoonal circulation; however, there are large discrepancies between model-generated surface wind patterns and the reported palaeowind directions from aeolian dune records. Here, we present the spatial distribution of dune slip-face azimuths recorded in the Lower Jurassic aeolian sandstones over a wide area of the western United States (palaeolatitude: ∼19–27∘ N). The azimuth data for dune slip faces reveal a bidirectional and oblique angular pattern that resembles the internal structures of modern longitudinal dunes. Based on the spatial pattern of slip-face directions and outcrop evidence, we suggest that most Lower Jurassic aeolian sandstones were NNE–SSW- to NNW–SSE-oriented longitudinal dunes, which likely formed as the result of a combination of westerly, northwesterly, and northeasterly palaeowinds. The reconstructed palaeowind pattern at ∼19–27∘ N appears to be consistent with the model-generated surface wind pattern and its seasonal alternation. The reconstructed palaeowind patterns also suggest an influence of orbitally induced changes in atmospheric pressure patterns over Pangaea.

Recently art is increasing its presence as an “creative industry” to sustain local communities, by generating socio-economic values. Still, whether art can be a tool for social innovation to regenerate communities, especially in rural areas in aging societies, is an unanswered question. In this paper, we take the example of Benesse Art Site Naoshima and Art Setouchi in the island area of Western Japan, viewing how it transformed from a corporate-established museum to a regional initiative involving various stakeholders, including local residents and thus creating the process of dialogues and collaboration. By reconstructing the existing evidence with supplementary fieldwork and interviews and applying a tri-sectoral analysis of the processes, we present how the art sites developed to become a social innovation. We then illustrate the role of two key individuals, Soichiro Fukutake and Fram Kitagawa, and shed light on the different values and methodologies they brought into these art sites. We argue that such contributions from the civil society and philanthropy sector made a critical contribution to characterize BASN and Art Setouchi, in addition to the well-documented and recognized efforts from local government and business sectors. Finally, we propose that such values, methodologies, and persons who can embody and implement such values are crucial if other countries and areas are to replicate the model.

The findings show that foetal exposure to Japan's Great Kantō Earthquake had stunting effects on girls in the devastated area. Disaster relief spending helped remediate stunting among boys by late primary school age, whereas it did not ameliorate girls’ stunting, which suggests a prenatal selection mechanism and compensating investment after birth. While maternal mental stress due to the fear of vibrations and anticipation of future aftershocks played a role in the adverse health effects, maternal nutritional stress via physical disruption also enhanced those effects.

However, it is unclear how ELS affects the brain and cognitive development. Identifying specific relationships of ELS with the genetic and brain-related underpinnings of cognitive development may reveal biological mechanisms responsible for the negative impact of ELS and those that lead to individual differences in sensitivity (or resilience) to ELS. In this study, to investigate the interlinked processes of cognitive development, we analyzed the multimodal data of DNA genotypes, brain imaging (MRI), and neuropsychological assessment (NIH Toolbox) outcomes of 4,276 children (ages 9 to 10 years, European ancestry) from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) study. We estimated the genetic influence on cognitive capacity using genome-wide polygenic scores (GPSs). Our regression and mediation analyses revealed significant causal relationships for the gene-brain-cognition pathway: Brain structural development significantly mediated the genetic influence on cognitive development (partial mediation effect = 0.016, PFWE<0.001). Interestingly, within the triangular relationship, we found a significant moderation effect of abuse only on the gene-to-brain pathway (Index of Moderated Mediation = −0.007; 95% CI= −0.012 ∼ −0.002; PFWE<0.05). These findings indicate the negative modulatory effects of ELS on the genetic influence on brain structural development that lead to disadvantageous neurocognitive development in prepubertal children.

For a 7 pmol sample of intact glycoprotein, RNase B, a solid ionic matrix DHB‐aniline‐sodium enabled a regioselective in‐source decay (ISD) and glycan‐selective ionization as a sodium adduct ion, [M+Na]+. This matrix significantly reduced the formation of peptide‐fragment‐derived ions, and a high‐mannose‐type glycan pattern was observed. This ISD product ion was formed by selective cleavage of the reducing end of the glycan by 0,2A or 2,4A type cross‐ring cleavage. Pseudo‐MS3‐type post‐source decay (PSD) analysis of an A type ion indicated the regioselectivity of the ISD fragmentation and the glycan sequence. Combining ISD glycomics with conventional ISD proteomics will accelerate quality control for glycoprotein drugs and biomarker discovery.

However, it is well-known that short-term disturbances can also cause vegetation switches when multiple stable vegetation states exist. We studied paleovegetation changes within the alternative stable states framework using stable carbon isotopes (relative abundance of C3-C4 vegetation) on the cellulose fraction from two high-resolution radiocarbon-dated peat cores ~170 m apart in the Sandynallah valley: Core 1 closer to the hillslope (32,000 years old) and Core 2 from the centre of the valley (45,000 years old). Core 1 is located in an ecotone showing shola-sedgeland dynamics with vegetation switching at c.22 ka from shola (possibly due to fire) to a prolonged unstable state until 13 ka sustained by low waterlogging. Following a hiatus c.13 ka, sedgeland dominates, with a shift into shola at 3.75 ka driven by increasing aridity. Core 2 shows a stable sedgeland mixed C3-C4 composition responding to temperature, enriched in C3-vegetation in the last glacial with C4-dominance beginning c.18.5 ka, indicative of deglacial warming. The distinctive vegetation states at corresponding times in Cores 1 and 2 within the same valley, responding independently to disturbances and climate, respectively, is the first paleo-record from an alternative stable states landscape in the montane tropics. Thus, short-term disturbances and site attributes need to be accounted for before ascribing vegetation change to changing climate in such vegetation mosaics. International audience

Abstract The goal of the present study was to replicate and extend previous research that demonstrated the incremental validity of narrative identity in predicting psychological well-being among Korean adults. We recruited 147 Korean adults living in South Korea who completed a battery of questionnaires that assessed the Big Five traits, extrinsic value orientation, self-concept clarity, and psychological well-being. Participants then wrote a story about how they had become the persons they were, which was subsequently coded in terms of agency. We found that psychological well-being was positively related to extraversion, agreeableness, openness, conscientiousness, and self-concept clarity, but negatively to neuroticism and extrinsic value orientation. The positive relation between agency, coded from narratives, and psychological well-being was significant both with and without controlling for the other variables. These results showed that narrative identity has incremental validity in predicting well-being among individuals who live in a culture where collectivism and individualism coexist.

Modelling experiments indicate a seasonal alternation in cross-equatorial flow induced by the seasonal reversal in the direction of the monsoonal circulation; however, there are large discrepancies between model-generated surface wind patterns and the reported palaeowind directions from aeolian dune records. Here, we present the spatial distribution of dune slip-face azimuths recorded in the Lower Jurassic aeolian sandstones over a wide area of the western United States (palaeolatitude: ∼19–27∘ N). The azimuth data for dune slip faces reveal a bidirectional and oblique angular pattern that resembles the internal structures of modern longitudinal dunes. Based on the spatial pattern of slip-face directions and outcrop evidence, we suggest that most Lower Jurassic aeolian sandstones were NNE–SSW- to NNW–SSE-oriented longitudinal dunes, which likely formed as the result of a combination of westerly, northwesterly, and northeasterly palaeowinds. The reconstructed palaeowind pattern at ∼19–27∘ N appears to be consistent with the model-generated surface wind pattern and its seasonal alternation. The reconstructed palaeowind patterns also suggest an influence of orbitally induced changes in atmospheric pressure patterns over Pangaea.

Recently art is increasing its presence as an “creative industry” to sustain local communities, by generating socio-economic values. Still, whether art can be a tool for social innovation to regenerate communities, especially in rural areas in aging societies, is an unanswered question. In this paper, we take the example of Benesse Art Site Naoshima and Art Setouchi in the island area of Western Japan, viewing how it transformed from a corporate-established museum to a regional initiative involving various stakeholders, including local residents and thus creating the process of dialogues and collaboration. By reconstructing the existing evidence with supplementary fieldwork and interviews and applying a tri-sectoral analysis of the processes, we present how the art sites developed to become a social innovation. We then illustrate the role of two key individuals, Soichiro Fukutake and Fram Kitagawa, and shed light on the different values and methodologies they brought into these art sites. We argue that such contributions from the civil society and philanthropy sector made a critical contribution to characterize BASN and Art Setouchi, in addition to the well-documented and recognized efforts from local government and business sectors. Finally, we propose that such values, methodologies, and persons who can embody and implement such values are crucial if other countries and areas are to replicate the model.

The findings show that foetal exposure to Japan's Great Kantō Earthquake had stunting effects on girls in the devastated area. Disaster relief spending helped remediate stunting among boys by late primary school age, whereas it did not ameliorate girls’ stunting, which suggests a prenatal selection mechanism and compensating investment after birth. While maternal mental stress due to the fear of vibrations and anticipation of future aftershocks played a role in the adverse health effects, maternal nutritional stress via physical disruption also enhanced those effects.
