    Authors: Gizem ÖKSÜZOĞLU;

    This article explores Christopher Nolan’s Memento as an exemplar of complex narrative in moving images with a psychoanalytical approach. Psychoanalysis has provided a foundation for commentators, film critics and theorists to analyse cinema. By using Freud’s Iceberg Analogy of the unconscious mind, this article examines the parallelism between the emergence of unconscious complex mental states, how they are expressed through emotions and behaviour in moving images and how spectators reflect their unconscious emotions and mental states. The article focuses on Memento and analyses the movie's character and narrative structure. Memento was chosen as Christopher Nolan captured the scary extent of the human mind's complexity and its unconsciousness. Through complex narrative structures, he created associations between audiences’ unconsciousness and negative emotions of repression and stress associated with it, such as helplessness, fear of having no purpose, misjudgement or unfair treatment. This article examines the scene structures in relation to the complexity of narratives and narratives’ relation to Leonard Shelby’s unconscious mind, through the framework of psychoanalysis and interpretivist approaches by utilising psychoanalytic film theory and text analysis. It concludes that the protagonist, Leonard Shelby, has a detached preconscious and conscious and unconscious resulting from not his head injury but unconsciously using it as a psychological shield. The detachment between levels of consciousness is depicted as a moving image in black and white. This provides stability and consistency to Leonard’s version of narratives, which plays the reverse. The analysis of Memento with a psychoanalytical approach evidences the parallelism between Freud’s Iceberg Analogy of the unconscious mind and humans' complex unconscious mental states and how this is depicted in moving image.

    Abstract. The fusion of geomatic techniques with different accuracy and resolution has been used in recent years to applications of geometrical documentation for several archaeological sites. In this research article, the case of the Roman Baths of Amathus in Limassol, Cyprus was investigated.Aerial photogrammetry and Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS) techniques were used to produce the final product. The photogrammetric data were based on Post-Processed Kinematic (PPK) imagery while the TLS georeference was based on targets.The main research objective of this paper is to examine the reliability of PPK photogrammetric data without the use of Ground Control Points (GCPs) and how well they can be integrated with TLS data. Also, the two acquisition techniques were compared and indicated that 0.005 m Ground Sampling Distance (GSD) resolution aerial images and 0.0061/10 m resolution scans can be qualitatively fused.The research paper will present the entire methodology up to the generation of the final 3D photorealistic product.

    Authors: Souropetsis, Markos;

    It is increasingly considered important to examine the learning processes in terms of technologically mediated learning during educational field trips, whether physical or virtual, to cultural heritage sites. This PhD thesis attempts to examine whether the integration of extended reality technologies (XR) and gamification affects the psychological and behavioral changes of the students and by extension their cognitive processes. The research adopts a design-based research approach to investigate the learning processes in non-formal learning conditions, when using extended reality gamified learning environments. Through the design-based research approach, two studies were conducted to address the research questions The first study tried to examine the extent to which the use of a gamified Augmented Reality (AR) environment during an educational visit to a cultural heritage site affects the learning performance and learning motivation of 6th grade elementary school students. Fiftynine students participated in this study. The data corpus consists of pre-and post-test questionnaires to evaluate students’ motivation and learning gains. The results show that the use of a gamified AR learning environment during educational visits to cultural heritage sites enhances students' motivation and learning. The second study investigated how the use of a gamified versus a non-gamified Virtual Reality (VR) learning environment impacted student motivation and learning outcomes in the context of a virtual visit at a cultural heritage site. For this purpose, we adopted an experimental research design to analyse the experience of 46 undergraduate university students; 23 of them used a gamified version of the VR learning environment, while 23 of them used the same VR environment without the gamification elements. Data were collected using pre and post learning assessments, motivation questionnaires, as well as individual semi-structured interviews. The data analyses showed that students who experienced the gamified VR learning environment had greater learning gains and perceived competence, as compared to their counterparts who used the VR environment without the gamification elements. The findings of this research contribute to the principled design of VR environments to optimize students’ knowledge acquisition and learning experience. Με βάση του ότι ολοένα και περισσότερο θεωρείται σημαντικό να εξεταστούν οι διαδικασίες μάθησης όσον αφορά στην τεχνολογικά διαμεσολαβημένη μάθηση κατά τις εκπαιδευτικές επισκέψεις, είτε με φυσική παρουσία είτε εικονικά, σε χώρους πολιτισμικής κληρονομιάς, αυτή η διδακτορική διατριβή στοχεύει να διερευνήσει περαιτέρω εάν η ενσωμάτωση τεχνολογιών εκτεταμένης πραγματικότητας και παιχνιδοποίησης επηρεάζει τις ψυχολογικές και συμπεριφορικές αλλαγές των μαθητών/ριών και κατ’ επέκταση τις γνωστικές τους διαδικασίες. H διατριβή υιοθετεί την προσέγγιση της σχεδιαστικής έρευνας για να διερευνήσει τις διαδικασίες μάθησης σε συνθήκες μη τυπικής μάθησης, κατά τη χρήση δυο παιχνιδοποιημένων μαθησιακών περιβαλλόντων εκτεταμένης πραγματικότητας. Η πρώτη έρευνα εξέτασε το βαθμό στον οποίο η χρήση ενός παιχνιδοποιημένου περιβάλλοντος επαυξημένης πραγματικότητας κατά την διάρκεια εκπαιδευτικής επίσκεψης σε ένα χώρο πολιτισμικής κληρονομιάς, επηρεάζει τη μαθησιακή επίδοση και μαθησιακά κίνητρα μαθητών/ριών Στ’ τάξης Δημοτικού. Σε αυτή συμμετείχαν 59 μαθητές/ριες, οι οποίοι/ες επισκέφτηκαν έναν χώρο πολιτισμικής κληρονομιάς. Τα δεδομένα συλλέχθηκαν μετά από μια προ- πειραματική μελέτη μιας ομάδας προ-δοκιμής/μετα-δοκιμής. Τα αποτελέσματα της ποσοτικής ανάλυσης έδειξαν πως η χρήση παιχνιδοποιημένων περιβαλλόντων μάθησης επαυξημένης πραγματικότητας κατά τη διάρκεια εκπαιδευτικών επισκέψεων σε χώρους πολιτισμικής κληρονομιάς ενίσχυσε τα κίνητρα και τη μάθηση των μαθητών/ριών. Η δεύτερη έρευνα, ακολούθησε ένα πειραματικό σχεδιασμό και διερεύνησε τις διαφορές στη μαθησιακή επίδοση και μαθησιακά κίνητρα φοιτητών/ριών κατά την εικονική επίσκεψη σε χώρο πολιτισμικής κληρονομιάς με τη χρήση ενός παιχνιδοποιημένου περιβάλλοντος εικονικής πραγματικότητας σε σύγκριση με ένα περιβάλλον εικονικής πραγματικότητας χωρίς στοιχεία παιχνιδοποίησης. Το δείγμα της έρευνας αποτελείτο από 46 φοιτητές/ριες τριτοβάθμιας εκπαίδευσης και η συλλογή δεδομένων περιελάμβανε ερωτηματολόγια τα οποία δόθηκαν πριν και μετά την παρέμβαση. Τα αποτελέσματα έδειξαν ότι η ενσωμάτωση της παιχνιδοποίησης σε περιβάλλοντα εικονικής πραγματικότητας συμβάλει σε αυξημένα μαθησιακά κέρδη και υψηλότερα κίνητρα. Completed

    The Internet, a space of technological innovations and novel Information and Communication Technologies, allows the interconnection of users and activities online, influences the evolution of the creation and dissemination of literature, as well as its place in the promotion of intercultural relations. The case of intercultural relations between France, Greece, and Cyprus as they appear on the Web constitutes an example of the evolving role of literature in cultural interactions in the digital age. This study aims to show how new technologies and the Internet affect literature and how online literature promotes intercultural relations between the three countries. Internet, espace d’innovations technologiques et de nouvelles technologies de l’information et de la communication, permet l’interconnexion d’activités et d’utilisateurs, influence l’évolution de la création et de la diffusion de la littérature, ainsi que la place de celle-ci dans la promotion des relations interculturelles. Le cas des relations interculturelles entre la France, la Grèce et Chypre telles qu’elles apparaissent sur Internet constitue un exemple de l’évolution du rôle de la littérature dans les interactions culturelles à l’ère numérique. Cette étude vise à montrer comment les nouvelles technologies et le dispositif Internet influencent l’évolution littéraire et comment la littérature sur Internet promeut les relations interculturelles entre les trois pays. 1 51 66 10

    Sixth-order boundary value problems (BVPs) arise in thin-film flows with a surface that has elastic bending resistance. To solve such problems, we first derive a complete set of odd and even orthonormal eigenfunctions -- resembling trigonometric sines and cosines, as well as the so-called ``beam'' functions. These functions intrinsically satisfy boundary conditions (BCs) of relevance to thin-film flows, since they are the solutions of a self-adjoint sixth-order Sturm--Liouville BVP with the same BCs. Next, we propose a Galerkin spectral approach for sixth-order problems; namely the sought function as well as all its derivatives and terms appearing in the differential equation are expanded into an infinite series with respect to the derived complete orthonormal (CON) set of eigenfunctions. The unknown coefficients in the series expansion are determined by solving the algebraic system derived by taking successive inner products with each member of the CON set of eigenfunctions. The proposed method and its convergence are demonstrated by solving two model sixth-order BVPs. The architectural complex of the al-Madrasa al-Halawiyya in Aleppo, Syria, remains one of the most remarkable monuments in the centuries-old city. First founded as the Church of St. Helen in the 6th century to serve as the Cathedral of Byzantine Aleppo, the structure preserves evidence of a complicated building history. For example, the Cathedral was converted into a mosque in 1124; later, parts of the church were integrated into a Madrassa. More recently, damage to the structure due to the war revealed information about Byzantine building methods. This research revisits the building history of the monument by relying on a parametric, Building Information Modelling (BIM) representation to compare the surviving structure with earlier reconstructions. This article addresses the following: (1) A survey of the building's history, topography, and architecture: Over the centuries, al-Madrasa al-Halawiyya has attracted Medieval monks, travellers, brigands, scholars, and more. Their accounts offer exciting opportunities to contextualise structural and functional changes to the complex. (2) An analysis of the historical structure, especially from the Byzantine period: The presented three-dimensional (3D) documentation of the site focused on historical transformations, which the authors then traced and compared by means of BIM to reconstructions proposed by Samuel Guyer (1911) and Michel Écochard (1950). This research demonstrates how a hybrid methodology can be used to establish building phases for comparison with historical and scholarly accounts, revealing new knowledge about building techniques and processes. The presented work started with a field survey of the monument, which was used to generate a hybrid 3D point cloud. Using the point cloud, the Byzantine church was virtually reconstructed and several construction phases were identified. At the same time, Heritage-BIM models were created based on the work of Guyer and Écochard. Finally, the Guyer and Écochard models were compared with the proposed Byzantine reconstruction and point cloud.

    Authors: Gizem ÖKSÜZOĞLU;

    Authors: Souropetsis, Markos;
