    Culture is a complex and multidimensional concept that has been studied extensively in various disciplines. The Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage recognized the im-portance of intangible culture, defining the responsibilities of the State Members. In 2018, the UNESCO emphasizes the synergy between tourism and culture, and so understanding the intangible elements of culture is crucial for developing sustainable and responsible tourism practices while protecting cultural heritage. The tourism industry has shifted towards experience-based services and products. While understanding the relationship of culture with authenticity, tourism, and meaningful experiences, cultural tourism becomes arguably one of the most optimal tourism practices to develop to succeed, create a profitable business, and protect and safeguard intangible cultural heritage. The case which is analysed under the concept mentioned is the Finnish tango. Finnish tango is a distinct representation of Finnish culture that blends traditional Finnish practices with the emotional intensity of Argentine tango. The objective of this research was to identify what aspects of Finnish tango make it suit-able for further development as a cultural and tourism asset. First, a theoretical framework was studied, following with the implementation of qualitative case study approach, using in-depth interviews with Finnish tango experts and observations of the Finnish tango landscape in the present. Results were formed using thematic analysis, discovering several themes relating to stakeholder perspective of tango within the Finnish context. The conclusions arrived at are there is a reduced interest in Finnish tango in its current context. Strengths of Finish tango are in its historic societal importance, accessibility through its ease of learning and per-forming, the desire to dance with a partner, the physicality, and the intimacy derived from Finnish tango, the desire of stakeholders to collaborate and work within the community, and its strength as a tourism experience. Opportunities for development include the use of storytelling to market Finnish tango and its authenticity, the inclusion of Finnish tango in the UNESCO intangible heritage list, development of Finnish tango as a packaged experience similar to Argentinean tango, and the inclusion of Finnish tango in the public education system. There is also a need to acknowledge language barriers and the need for instruc-tion and marketing in English, as well as exporting Finnish tango as a tourism asset. These aspects provide context for further development and advocation of Finnish tango as an undiscovered tourism asset. The study has significant relevance for the field of cultural tourism, as it contributes to the understanding of Finnish tango as a potential tourism experience.

    Tutkielma keskittyy länsimaalaisen nykyaikaisen tatuoinnin tutkimukseen, pyrkimyksenä selvittää voivatko tatuoinnit tulla luetuksi taidehistorian diskurssin kehotaiteeseen. Tutkielman ns. toinen osa käsittelee taidehistorian katseen käsitettä, ja sitä kautta pyrin tutkimuksessa selvittämään, voivatko tatuoinnit muuttaa naiseen kohdistuvaa katsetta. Pyrin siis sovittamaan taidehistorian tutkimukseen tatuoinnit kehotaiteena, ja toisaalta pohtimaan tatuointien mahdollisuutta naisten ”oman kehon haltuunoton” keinona katseen muuttamisen kautta. Tutkielman aineistona toimivat taidehistorian sekä sosiologian tutkimukset kehotaiteesta, tatuoinneista, tatuoiduista naisista sekä katseen käsitteen tutkimus. Hyödynnän tutkimuksessani sukupuolen tutkimuksellista, feminististä menetelmää naisnäkökulman kautta. Aiempaa taidehistoriallista tutkimusta tatuoinneista ei löytynyt, joten sovellan sosiologisia lähdemateriaaleja taidehistorian tutkimukseen kehotaiteesta, katseesta ja representaatiosta, ja pyrin luomaan sujuvan yhteen sovittamisen näiden välille. Kuva-aineistona hyödynnän valokuvia tatuoinneista, mutta tutkin ennemmin käsitteellisiä ilmiöitä kuin itse kuvia. Kuvat toimivat tutkimukseni tukena, mutta tutkimukseni kohde on suhteellisen käsitteellinen eikä siten suoraan kuva-aineistolla esitettävä. Tutkimukseni on uutta taidehistoriallista tutkimusta, sillä tatuoinneista tällaista ei vielä ole tehty. Tämän vuoksi myös sosiologisen tutkimusmateriaalin hyödyntäminen oli jokseenkin pakollista tutkimuksen teossa, ja itse tutkimuksen teko haastavaa. Johtopäätöksissäni päädyin siihen, että ainakin osittain tatuoinnit ovat luettavissa taidehistorian diskurssin kehotaiteeseen, ja niillä on mahdollisuus muuttaa naiseen kohdistuvaa katsetta.

    Authors: Ewe, Emmaline;

    This thesis focused on the subgenre of abstract expressionist moving image. The works of three contemporary moving image artists, Stan Brakhage, Pipilotti Rist and Bill Viola, were analysed to exemplify traits of abstract expressionist video art. Along with this study, a video installation titled Highway 88 was created. The study was conducted to explicate the context in which the moving image artwork was created. Data for this thesis were collected from a variety of relevant sources such as articles, books, videos, and interviews. Artworks for analysis were sourced from the artists’ own websites or YouTube for this study. The study explored and defined abstract expressionist moving image as an art style along with what artwork this genre constituted of. The study encouraged artists to experiment with an often overlooked genre by demystifying works in the field showing that abstract expressionist moving image works has its place in the context of fine art.

    Tämä maisterintutkielma käsittelee Piia Lehden (1973–2017) vedoksen Muutoksen rajaton mahdollisuus (2014) luontokäsitystä uusmaterialistisen teorian ja representaatioanalyysin kautta. Lähestyn vedosta uusmaterialismille keskeisen Elizabeth Groszin ajattelun sekä hänen muihin ajattelijoihin kohdistaman luentansa kautta. Täydennän hänen näkemyksiään muilla aihetta tukevilla ajattelijoilla ja näkökulmilla soveltuvin osin. Tutkielman aineisto muodostuu serigrafialla toteutetun Muutoksen rajaton mahdollisuus - vedoksen pohjalle. Lähestyn vedosta painetun taiteen käsitteen kautta. Käsitteenä se huomioi taidegrafiikkaa paremmin taiteenlajin merkitysjärjestelmiin pohjautuvan ontologian sekä siihen olennaisesti kytkeytyvät materiaalisuuteen ja prosessuaalisuuteen liittyvät ominaisuudet. Tutkielmassa uusmaterialismilla on kaksoisrooli, jolloin se toimii uusmaterialistisen taiteentutkimuksen kautta vedoksen materiaalisia ja prosessuaalisia ominaisuuksia korostavana teoriana. Toisaalta vedoksen kuva-aihetta sekä sen tuottamaa luontokäsitystä tulkitsen uusmaterialismille keskeisen Groszin ajattelun kautta. Muutoksen rajaton mahdollisuus on luontokäsityksensä kautta korosteisesti sidoksissa luonnon moninaisuuteen sekä muutoksellisuuteen. Sen luontokäsitys kytkeytyy voimakkaasti yhteen erilaisten todellisuutta tehostavien voimien kanssa. Näitä ovat elämänvoima, luonnonvalinta, sukupuoliero ja seksuaalivalinta sekä taiteen kyky vahvistaa erilaisia tuntuja. Toisaalta materiaalisten ominaisuuksiensa ja kuva-aiheensa kautta vedos muodostaa kuvauksen sellaisesta elämänmuodosta, joka ei ole todellisuudellemme ominainen. Näin ollen vedos on tulkittavissa kuvaukseksi erilaisten luonnon voimien paljastamisen, muuntamisen sekä tehostamisen mahdollisuuksista. Tällöin edellä kuvatut ominaisuudet ovat niitä tekijöitä, joiden kautta luonnon omat voimat saavat näkyvän olomuodon vedoksen pinnalle.

    Authors: Sironen, Stella;

    Tutkielma käsittelee meikkausta kahden yhdysvaltalaisen feministiseen taiteeseen yhdistetyn nykytaiteilijan, Cindy Shermanin (s. 1954) ja Marilyn Minterin (s. 1948) tuotannoissa. Tutkielma kysyy, minkälainen rooli meikkauksella on nykytaideteoksessa: miten sillä representoidaan sukupuolta, voidaanko sen käyttö nähdä feministisenä kritiikkinä ja voiko se samaan aikaan olla kaupallista ja kriittistä, sekä ovatko aineiston meikkaukset joko kantajiaan peittäviä naamioita, heidän identiteettiään esiintuovia ilmaisun välineitä vai kenties jotain muuta. Lähilukemalla feministisiä nykytaideteoksia pyrin tarjoamaan meikkauksen tarkasteluun vaihtoehtoisia tapoja kriittiselle näkemykselle meikkauksesta paheksuttavana turhamaisuutena tai naisia alistavana mahdottomiin kauneusihanteisiin sopeutumisena. Feministinen tutkimusperinne ja sukupuolentutkimuksen näkökulmat ohjaavat kriittistä luentaani, joka pohjaa taidehistorian käsitykseen representaatiosta: merkitykset syntyvät taideteoksen ja siitä tehdyn luennan vuorovaikutuksessa. Aineistoksi on valikoitunut yhteensä 16 kuvaa, joista 10 on nykytaideteoksia, viisi kummaltakin taiteilijalta. Lisäaineistona toimii kuusi kuvaa, jotka ovat peräisin taiteilijoiden toteuttamista mainoskampanjoista. Tutkielman teoreettinen viitekehys hyödyntää sukupuolentutkimuksen teoriaa sukupuolesta performatiivisesti tuotettuna kategoriana sekä teoriaa meikkauksesta naamioitumisena. Tutkielma avaa lyhyesti myös meikkauksen historiaa ja ontologiaa. Taidehistoriaan paljon sovellettu groteskin ruumiin teoria ja abjektin käsite toimivat apuvälineinä aineiston analyysissä. Hyödynnän myös taiteilijoiden teoksista aiemmin kirjoitettuja analyysejä ja heidän haastatteluitaan. Tutkielma osoittaa, että aineiston meikkauksissa sukupuolta parodioidaan ja sen rakentuneisuutta tehdään näkyväksi epäkonventionaalisilla meikkauksilla. Kahden taiteilijan teoksissa esiintyvät meikkaukset edustavat sen hyvin erilaisia muotoja: Shermanin kohdalla ne liittyvät sukupuolen ja muiden identiteettikategorioiden merkitsemiseen, kun Minter esittää meikin abstraktina materiaalina ihon pinnalla. Tulkitsen molempien taiteilijoiden teokset feministisiksi taktiikoiksi, jotka rikkovat stereotyyppisen feminiinisyyden kuvastoa. Taiteilijoiden mainoskuvat ovat teosten tapaan kriittisiä stereotypioita ja kauneusihanteita kohtaan, mutta niillä on myös kaupallinen agenda, mikä luo kuviin sisäisen ristiriidan. Mainokset vieraannuttavat itsensä tyypillisestä mainoskuvastosta ja vetoavat valveutuneeseen yleisöön. Meikkaukset Shermanin teoksissa ovat monimutkaisia kokonaisuuksia, joissa identiteetillä ja meikillä on suhde, mutta se on ironinen ja ristiriitainen. Minterin teoksissa meikin ja identiteetin suhde ei ole yhtä olennainen, vaan teokset esittävät ruumiin rajattomana ja lihallisena materiaalina, jonka pinnalla oleva meikki sulautuu osaksi sitä.

    Authors: Carey, Jonathan;

    The purpose of this study was to establish a foundational understanding and academic framework for utilizing art-making as a method of knowledge-making within an academic context. Specifically, a/r/tography, an arts-based research methodology, was identified as a viable tool for inquiring into complex subjects. Furthermore, arts-based research was recognized as an innovative research paradigm with profound implications for society, knowledge, art, and academia. Various of sources, primarily relevant peer-reviewed articles, books, and interviews, contributed to the data collection. In addition to these contemporary references, older sources dating back to the 1990s were incorporated for the historical context of arts-based research. This set of sources was employed to define, offer illustrative examples of, and present a practical framework for conducting arts-based research. As the practical and final part of this thesis, Mechanics of Consciousness, an original arts-based research project by the author, was presented. The collection of artworks featured in Mechanics of Consciousness was exhibited at Galleria Himmelblau during the 2022 Tampere University of Applied Sciences Fine Arts Degree Show Embers. As this is an aesthetic inquiry, the “result” of this thesis is the process of this thesis.

    Authors: Ketonen, Anu;

    Unguentariumit (yks. unguentarium, mon. unguentaria) ovat savesta valmistettuja keraamisia pulloja, joita tunnetaan Välimeren alueella hellenistiseltä kaudelta roomalaisaikaan saakka, karkeasti välillä 300 eaa.–100 jaa. Yleisesti unguentariumeja on tutkittu suhteellisen vähän, ja suomalaisessa arkeologiassa ei juuri lainkaan. Suurin osa tutkitusta ja julkaistusta aineistosta on peräisin hautakonteksteista. Artemis oli yksi antiikin maailman tärkeimmistä jumalista ja tämän kulttipaikat sijaitsivat kaupunkikeskusten ulkopuolella villin luonnon ympäröiminä. Tähän liittyvä kulttitoiminta yhdistetään usein tyttöjen ja naisten initaatioriitteihin, joka heijastuu myös kohteiden arkeologiseen materiaaliin. Tämän maisterintutkielman tarkoituksena on tutkia Artemis Lykoatiksen pyhäkön vuosien 2010–2022 välillä suoritettujen arkeologisten kaivausten tuottamaa unguentaria-aineistoa. Tavoitteena on selvittää mitä tämänkaltaisesta, ennalta tutkimattomasta ja fragmentaarisesta aineistosta on mahdollista saada selville perinteisen typologisen tutkimuksen kautta, aiempia julkaisuja ja tutkimuskirjallisuutta apuna käyttäen. Tämän lisäksi tutkitaan aineiston spatiaalista sekä stratigrafista levinneisyyttä takymetrimittausdatan perusteella valmistettujen karttojen ja esineistön löytökontekstitietojen pohjalta. Tutkimukseni tuottamien havaintojen perusteella on tarkoitus selvittää mitä fragmentaarisesta unguentaria-aineistosta voidaan saada selville typologis-kronologisen ja kontekstuaalisen tutkimuksen kautta, ja mitä tämän pohjalta voidaan kertoa ihmistoiminnasta Artemis Lykoatiksen pyhäkössä.

    Authors: Vaaja, Johanna;

    Finland’s early childhood education system has been in existence for over 135 years. There are many books and articles written about its history, but most of them are written in Finnish, leaving very few options for those, who are not fluent enough in the language. To offer further insight to those interested, the aim of the study is to investigate, how the early childhood was discussed in Finnish newspapers during 1960s and present the findings in English. This study was conducted as a secondary, qualitative research. The newspaper data was collected from Helsingin Sanomat’s digitalized archives, and then analysed according to content analysis approach. The data was examined through historical and media perspectives. The analysis shows that the early childhood education was a reoccurring topic within Helsingin Sanomat during the 1960s. Most of the discussions focused on the formal kindergarten system, with varying concerns and general information being accorded markedly prominent spaces. Non-formal care and other related circumstances were another regularly featured topic, although to a lesser extent than the formal care. These findings also give an overview of the newspaper coverage tendencies from the 1960s. Newspapers reported the matters which were felt to be important or pressing enough by the public opinion, with particular attention being given to drama-filled aspects. Suomen varhaiskasvatusjärjestelmä on ollut olemassa vuodesta 1888 lähtien, yli 135 vuoden ajan. Järjestelmän pitkästä historiasta on kirjoitettu useita kirjoja ja artikkeleita, mutta suurin osa niistä on kirjoitettu suomeksi, muunkielisen tarjonnan jäädessä hyvin suppeaksi. Koska nykyaikaa ja tulevaisuutta on mahdollista ymmärtää syvemmin tiedostamalla historian ja sen annin, tämän tutkimuksen tarkoituksena on tarkastella, kuinka varhaiskasvatuksesta keskusteltiin suomalaisissa 1960-luvun sanomalehdissä, ja esittää tulokset englanniksi. Tutkimus toteutettiin sekundäärisenä, kvalitatiivisena tutkimuksena. Tutkimusaineistoksi valikoitui 1960-luvun merkittävä sanomalehti, Helsingin Sanomat. Aineisto kerättiin Helsingin Sanomien digitaalisista arkistoista, jonka jälkeen aineisto analysoitiin laadullisen sisältöanalyysin periaatteilla. Aineiston tarkastelussa otettiin huomioon sekä historiallinen että median perspektiivit. Tutkimustulokset paljastavat, että päivähoito ja varhaiskasvatus olivat toistuvia aiheita 1960-luvun Helsingin Sanomissa, aikakauden asenteiden heijastuessa kirjoituksissa. Suurin osa keskustelusta keskittyi julkiseen päivähoitojärjestelmään, erinäisten huolten ja yleisen informaation ollessa erityisessä keskiössä. Julkisen järjestelmän ulkopuolinen hoito, sekä muut päivähoitoon liittyvät asiahaarat saivat myös oman tilansa uutisissa, vaikkakin huomattavasti pienemmässä mittakaavassa kuin mitä julkinen järjestelmä. Tutkimustulokset antavat myös yleiskatsauksen 1960-luvun sanomalehtien tavasta raportoida uutisia ja aiheita. Sanomalehtien uutisraportointien keskiössä olivat yleisimmin aiheet ja tapahtumat, jotka koettiin kansan parissa tärkeiksi. Myöskin dramaattisille, usein negatiivissävytteisille aiheille annettiin erityishuomiota.

    Authors: Hotti, Helmiina;

    Diagrams are a mode of communication that offers challenges for its computational processing. The challenges arise from the multimodal nature of diagrams. This means that diagrams combine several types of expressive resources to achieve their communicative purposes, such as textual elements, connective elements such as arrows and lines, and illustrations. Humans interpret diagrams by judging how these different expressive resources work together to reach the communicative goals set for the diagram. In order to do that, humans make inferences of the diagram layout and the implicit relations that exist between different parts of the diagram. In order to build computational methods for diagram understanding, large amounts of data annotated with these implicit relations is required. Traditionally, these types of discourse structure annotations have been annotated by experts, due to the difficulty of the task and the requirement that the annotator is familiar with the theoretical framework used for describing discourse relations. The chosen theory for modeling discourse relations in diagrams is Rhetorical Structure Theory, originally developed for modeling textual coherence but applicable to multimodal data as well. This thesis explores the possibility to gather discourse relation annotations for multimodal diagram data with crowdsourcing; employing naive workers on crowdsourcing platforms to complete annotation tasks for a monetary reward. Adapting the task of discourse relation annotation to be feasible for naive workers has been proven challenging by past research concerned with only textual data, and the multimodality of the data adds to the complexity of the task. This thesis presents a novel method for gathering multimodal discourse relation annotations using crowdsourcing and methods of natural language processing. Two approaches are explored: adopting an insertive annotation task where the workers are asked to describe the relationship between two diagram elements in their own words and adopting a multiple-choice task, converting the formal definitions of Rhetorical Structure Theory to understandable phrases to annotate with. Natural language processing is used in the first approach to validate the language and structure of the crowdsourced descriptions. The results of the first approach highlight the difficulty of the task: the workers show tendencies of relying heavily on example descriptions shown in the task instructions and difficulty of grasping the differences of the more fine-grained relations. The multiple-choice approach seems more promising, with annotation agreement with expert annotators higher than in previous research concerned with discourse relations in textual data. The manual inspection of the annotated diagrams show that the disagreement of the crowdworkers and expert annotators is often justifiable; both annotations represent a valid interpretation of the discourse relation. This highlights one of the main challenges of the task, which is the ambiguity of some of the relations. Future work is encouraged to consider this by adopting an approach that is less concerned with a pre-defined set of relations and more interested in how the different discourse relations are actually perceived.

    Opinnäytetyössäni käsitellään poikkitaiteellisuutta sekä taideopetuksen että oman kuvallisen ilmaisun konteksteissa. Tavoitteena on ollut luoda perinteisen piirtämiseen tai maalaamiseen pohjautuvan kuvataideopetuksen rinnalle poikkitaiteellinen työpajamalli, jossa osallistujilla on mahdollisuus valita itseään kiinnostava ilmaisukeino, esimerkiksi ääni-, kuva-, tanssi- tai sanataide yhteisen produktion toteuttamiseksi. Opiskelijoiden taidekäsitystä laajentamalla on mahdollista saada myös pojat innostumaan taiteesta kaikille sopivana harrastusmuotona. Tarkastelun kohteena on ollut myös taiteen tekemisen kautta saatavat hyvinvointivaikutukset lasten, nuorten sekä myös omien mielenterveysongelmieni helpottajana. Menetelminä on käytetty toimintatutkimusta sekä autoetnografiaa. Työpajamalli pohjautuu lähdeaineistosta löytyvien poikkitaiteellisia opetusmenetelmiä käsittelevien tutkimusten tuloksiin, taiteen tekemisen todistetusti tuottamiin hyvinvointivaikutuksiin sekä omiin kokemuksiin taideopettajana ja taiteentekijänä. Lopuksi on esitelty poikkitaiteellisen työpajamallin sisällöt ja tavoitteet sekä pohdittu miten tutkimuksissa hyödylliseksi todettua opetusmetodia voisi toteuttaa yleissivistävässä koulutuksessa sekä vapaassa sivistystyössä. Koska työpajamallin testaus jää vielä toteuttamatta, ei sille asetettuja tavoitteita ole voitu arvioida tämän opinnäytetyön puitteissa.

    Authors: Ewe, Emmaline;

    This thesis focused on the subgenre of abstract expressionist moving image. The works of three contemporary moving image artists, Stan Brakhage, Pipilotti Rist and Bill Viola, were analysed to exemplify traits of abstract expressionist video art. Along with this study, a video installation titled Highway 88 was created. The study was conducted to explicate the context in which the moving image artwork was created. Data for this thesis were collected from a variety of relevant sources such as articles, books, videos, and interviews. Artworks for analysis were sourced from the artists’ own websites or YouTube for this study. The study explored and defined abstract expressionist moving image as an art style along with what artwork this genre constituted of. The study encouraged artists to experiment with an often overlooked genre by demystifying works in the field showing that abstract expressionist moving image works has its place in the context of fine art.

    Tämä maisterintutkielma käsittelee Piia Lehden (1973–2017) vedoksen Muutoksen rajaton mahdollisuus (2014) luontokäsitystä uusmaterialistisen teorian ja representaatioanalyysin kautta. Lähestyn vedosta uusmaterialismille keskeisen Elizabeth Groszin ajattelun sekä hänen muihin ajattelijoihin kohdistaman luentansa kautta. Täydennän hänen näkemyksiään muilla aihetta tukevilla ajattelijoilla ja näkökulmilla soveltuvin osin. Tutkielman aineisto muodostuu serigrafialla toteutetun Muutoksen rajaton mahdollisuus - vedoksen pohjalle. Lähestyn vedosta painetun taiteen käsitteen kautta. Käsitteenä se huomioi taidegrafiikkaa paremmin taiteenlajin merkitysjärjestelmiin pohjautuvan ontologian sekä siihen olennaisesti kytkeytyvät materiaalisuuteen ja prosessuaalisuuteen liittyvät ominaisuudet. Tutkielmassa uusmaterialismilla on kaksoisrooli, jolloin se toimii uusmaterialistisen taiteentutkimuksen kautta vedoksen materiaalisia ja prosessuaalisia ominaisuuksia korostavana teoriana. Toisaalta vedoksen kuva-aihetta sekä sen tuottamaa luontokäsitystä tulkitsen uusmaterialismille keskeisen Groszin ajattelun kautta. Muutoksen rajaton mahdollisuus on luontokäsityksensä kautta korosteisesti sidoksissa luonnon moninaisuuteen sekä muutoksellisuuteen. Sen luontokäsitys kytkeytyy voimakkaasti yhteen erilaisten todellisuutta tehostavien voimien kanssa. Näitä ovat elämänvoima, luonnonvalinta, sukupuoliero ja seksuaalivalinta sekä taiteen kyky vahvistaa erilaisia tuntuja. Toisaalta materiaalisten ominaisuuksiensa ja kuva-aiheensa kautta vedos muodostaa kuvauksen sellaisesta elämänmuodosta, joka ei ole todellisuudellemme ominainen. Näin ollen vedos on tulkittavissa kuvaukseksi erilaisten luonnon voimien paljastamisen, muuntamisen sekä tehostamisen mahdollisuuksista. Tällöin edellä kuvatut ominaisuudet ovat niitä tekijöitä, joiden kautta luonnon omat voimat saavat näkyvän olomuodon vedoksen pinnalle.

    Authors: Sironen, Stella;

    Tutkielma käsittelee meikkausta kahden yhdysvaltalaisen feministiseen taiteeseen yhdistetyn nykytaiteilijan, Cindy Shermanin (s. 1954) ja Marilyn Minterin (s. 1948) tuotannoissa. Tutkielma kysyy, minkälainen rooli meikkauksella on nykytaideteoksessa: miten sillä representoidaan sukupuolta, voidaanko sen käyttö nähdä feministisenä kritiikkinä ja voiko se samaan aikaan olla kaupallista ja kriittistä, sekä ovatko aineiston meikkaukset joko kantajiaan peittäviä naamioita, heidän identiteettiään esiintuovia ilmaisun välineitä vai kenties jotain muuta. Lähilukemalla feministisiä nykytaideteoksia pyrin tarjoamaan meikkauksen tarkasteluun vaihtoehtoisia tapoja kriittiselle näkemykselle meikkauksesta paheksuttavana turhamaisuutena tai naisia alistavana mahdottomiin kauneusihanteisiin sopeutumisena. Feministinen tutkimusperinne ja sukupuolentutkimuksen näkökulmat ohjaavat kriittistä luentaani, joka pohjaa taidehistorian käsitykseen representaatiosta: merkitykset syntyvät taideteoksen ja siitä tehdyn luennan vuorovaikutuksessa. Aineistoksi on valikoitunut yhteensä 16 kuvaa, joista 10 on nykytaideteoksia, viisi kummaltakin taiteilijalta. Lisäaineistona toimii kuusi kuvaa, jotka ovat peräisin taiteilijoiden toteuttamista mainoskampanjoista. Tutkielman teoreettinen viitekehys hyödyntää sukupuolentutkimuksen teoriaa sukupuolesta performatiivisesti tuotettuna kategoriana sekä teoriaa meikkauksesta naamioitumisena. Tutkielma avaa lyhyesti myös meikkauksen historiaa ja ontologiaa. Taidehistoriaan paljon sovellettu groteskin ruumiin teoria ja abjektin käsite toimivat apuvälineinä aineiston analyysissä. Hyödynnän myös taiteilijoiden teoksista aiemmin kirjoitettuja analyysejä ja heidän haastatteluitaan. Tutkielma osoittaa, että aineiston meikkauksissa sukupuolta parodioidaan ja sen rakentuneisuutta tehdään näkyväksi epäkonventionaalisilla meikkauksilla. Kahden taiteilijan teoksissa esiintyvät meikkaukset edustavat sen hyvin erilaisia muotoja: Shermanin kohdalla ne liittyvät sukupuolen ja muiden identiteettikategorioiden merkitsemiseen, kun Minter esittää meikin abstraktina materiaalina ihon pinnalla. Tulkitsen molempien taiteilijoiden teokset feministisiksi taktiikoiksi, jotka rikkovat stereotyyppisen feminiinisyyden kuvastoa. Taiteilijoiden mainoskuvat ovat teosten tapaan kriittisiä stereotypioita ja kauneusihanteita kohtaan, mutta niillä on myös kaupallinen agenda, mikä luo kuviin sisäisen ristiriidan. Mainokset vieraannuttavat itsensä tyypillisestä mainoskuvastosta ja vetoavat valveutuneeseen yleisöön. Meikkaukset Shermanin teoksissa ovat monimutkaisia kokonaisuuksia, joissa identiteetillä ja meikillä on suhde, mutta se on ironinen ja ristiriitainen. Minterin teoksissa meikin ja identiteetin suhde ei ole yhtä olennainen, vaan teokset esittävät ruumiin rajattomana ja lihallisena materiaalina, jonka pinnalla oleva meikki sulautuu osaksi sitä.

    Authors: Carey, Jonathan;

    Unguentariumit (yks. unguentarium, mon. unguentaria) ovat savesta valmistettuja keraamisia pulloja, joita tunnetaan Välimeren alueella hellenistiseltä kaudelta roomalaisaikaan saakka, karkeasti välillä 300 eaa.–100 jaa. Yleisesti unguentariumeja on tutkittu suhteellisen vähän, ja suomalaisessa arkeologiassa ei juuri lainkaan. Suurin osa tutkitusta ja julkaistusta aineistosta on peräisin hautakonteksteista. Artemis oli yksi antiikin maailman tärkeimmistä jumalista ja tämän kulttipaikat sijaitsivat kaupunkikeskusten ulkopuolella villin luonnon ympäröiminä. Tähän liittyvä kulttitoiminta yhdistetään usein tyttöjen ja naisten initaatioriitteihin, joka heijastuu myös kohteiden arkeologiseen materiaaliin. Tämän maisterintutkielman tarkoituksena on tutkia Artemis Lykoatiksen pyhäkön vuosien 2010–2022 välillä suoritettujen arkeologisten kaivausten tuottamaa unguentaria-aineistoa. Tavoitteena on selvittää mitä tämänkaltaisesta, ennalta tutkimattomasta ja fragmentaarisesta aineistosta on mahdollista saada selville perinteisen typologisen tutkimuksen kautta, aiempia julkaisuja ja tutkimuskirjallisuutta apuna käyttäen. Tämän lisäksi tutkitaan aineiston spatiaalista sekä stratigrafista levinneisyyttä takymetrimittausdatan perusteella valmistettujen karttojen ja esineistön löytökontekstitietojen pohjalta. Tutkimukseni tuottamien havaintojen perusteella on tarkoitus selvittää mitä fragmentaarisesta unguentaria-aineistosta voidaan saada selville typologis-kronologisen ja kontekstuaalisen tutkimuksen kautta, ja mitä tämän pohjalta voidaan kertoa ihmistoiminnasta Artemis Lykoatiksen pyhäkössä.

    Authors: Vaaja, Johanna;

    Authors: Hotti, Helmiina;
