For the CLEF 2004 ImageCLEF St Andrew's Collection task the Dublin City University group carried out three sets of experiments: standard cross-language information retrieval (CLIR) runs using topic translation via machine translation (MT), combination of this run with image matching results from the GIFT/Viper system, and a novel document rescoring approach based on automatic MT evaluation metrics. Our standard MT-based CLIR works well on this task. Encouragingly combination with image matching lists is also observed to produce small positive changes in the retrieval output. However, rescoring using the MT evaluation metrics in their current form significantly reduced retrieval effectiveness.

For further information contact us at helpdesk@openaire.eudescription Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Part of book or chapter of book 2015Publisher:Palgrave Macmillan UK Authors: Richard Pearson;Richard Pearson;Browning’s conception of stage authorship is founded on a historically inscribed notion that poetry and theatre can sustain the same text. Browning’s experience of reading and watching the playwrights of the classical canon (the Shakespeares and Jonsons) at Drury Lane and Covent Garden, and reading Greek and Roman dramatists, led him and many of his higher-brow contemporaries to imagine a synthesis of text and performance that would add status to the playwright through the book, and opportunity to the actor-manager through the stage. Such a utopian position was responsible for the publication of a number of key plays in the 1830s that were aiming to set a new standard for dramatic authorship against a tide that was running towards farce, melodrama and pyrotechnical effects. The battle over the rights and payments to dramatic authors in the early 1830s was carried out against the backdrop of a shift towards sensationalism that destabilized the category of dramatic authorship to such an extent that the ‘author’ was becoming either an unnecessary hindrance to a good spectacle, or a composite figure of general ownership that turned texts into malleable simulations, multi-authored like a Wikipedia page.

The radical polychromy of the Museum Building at Trinity College Dublin did not emerge Minerva-like from the brow of Benajmin Woodward, but rather from an imbrication of architecture, geology and engineering (fig. 2.1). While much is known about developments within these disciplines in the early Victorian period, relatively little is known of their relationship. How did geology and engineering come to influence architectural design and production? Why was it that structural columns of polished, polychrome, local limestone first appeared in architecture in Dublin in the 1850s? What was the impact in Ireland of this avant-garde polychromy? Louise Caulfield has shown the wealth of Ireland?s coloured limestone and its burgeoning exploitation in the period: this essay seeks to discover connective tissue between contemporary science, industry, politics and aesthetics.

Using the case study of Julia Kavanagh’s travel book on Italy, A Summer and Winter in the Two Sicilies (1858), it identifies how travel to a European country could introduce dialogues about religion, gender, politics, and alterity. Although the field of travel out of Ireland to continental Europe has been relatively neglected, this chapter focuses on the potentialities of such research to understand how “Irishness” functioned in the world of intercultural interactions inherent in travel.

In among the merchants, however, a new breed of Irish traveller appeared in the wake of the regime change of 1558. Mostly ecclesiastics, they were a mixture of displaced papal clergy, principally bishops, some religious, chiefly Jesuits, and a sprinkling of students, heading for continental universities.1 For the majority, their Spanish sojourn consisted in penury and uncertainty, punctuated with first-hand experience of Iberian Catholicism, including the Inquisition. Only a very small number found themselves in the inquisitorial dock, with a larger number serving the Inquisition, as interpreters, witnesses and as denunciators.

The DEH can be seen as an academic response to three major interwoven changes and challenges: the digital revolution; global warming and global warming and social-political agency related to environmental change. In the twenty-first century, we are challenged with a transformation in human collective intelligence. The key features of this transformation involve the ?digital? replacing the ?analogue?; design thinking and post-secularism supplanting tradition; and human agency emerging as the main driver of planetary change. Unlocking the keys to human perception, mitigating behavior and adaptive action may likely rank among the preeminent challenges we face in an age witnessing unprecedented rates of global change. The chapter showcases how the DEH is being applied by three international funded research projects: Larry McMurtry?s Literary Geography; NorFish (Environmental History of the North Atlantic Fisheries, 1500-1800); and the Climates of Conflict in Babylonia project.

Salton; John D. Kelleher;Image Captioning is a task that requires models to acquire a multi-modal understanding of the world and to express this understanding in natural language text. While the state-of-the-art for this task has rapidly improved in terms of n-gram metrics, these models tend to output the same generic captions for similar images. In this work, we address this limitation and train a model that generates more diverse and specific captions through an unsupervised training approach that incorporates a learning signal from an Image Retrieval model. We summarize previous results and improve the state-of-the-art on caption diversity and novelty. We make our source code publicly available online: https://github.com/AnnikaLindh/Diverse_and_Specific_Image_Captioning

For further information contact us at helpdesk@openaire.eudescription Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Part of book or chapter of book 1983Publisher:Palgrave Macmillan UK Publicly fundedAuthors: James George Frazer;James George Frazer;Another of those gods whose supposed death and resurrection struck such deep roots into the faith and ritual of Western Asia is Attis. He was to Phrygia what Adonis was to Syria. Like Adonis, he appears to have been a god of vegetation, and his death and resurrection were annually mourned and rejoiced over at a festival in spring. The legends and rites of the two gods were so much alike that the ancients themselves sometimes identified them. Attis was said to have been a fair young shepherd or herdsman beloved by Cybele, the Mother of the Gods, a great Asiatic goddess of fertility, who had her chief home in Phrygia. Some held that Attis was her son. His birth, like that of many other heroes, is said to have been miraculous. His mother, Nana, was a virgin, who conceived by putting a ripe almond or a pomegranate in her bosom. Indeed in the Phrygian cosmogony an almond figured as the father of all things, perhaps because its delicate lilac blossom is one of the first heralds of the spring, appearing on the bare boughs before the leaves have opened. Such tales of virgin mothers are relics of an age of childish ignorance when men had not yet recognized the intercourse of the sexes as the true cause of offspring. Two different accounts of the death of Attis were current. According to the one he was killed by a boar, like Adonis.

According to the state website—Decade of Centenaries: “The period 1912–22 was one of the most eventful in Ireland’s history… (the centennial) aims to commemorate each step… in a tolerant, inclusive and respectful way.” It is understood this includes the Civil War period (1922–23), occasioned by the Anglo-Irish Treaty and partition of the island (1921). Reference is made to student exploratory projects carried out in 2017. Framing of metanarratives is reviewed in contexts focalizing on WWI centennials and current national issues. The UK’s Brexit Referendum to leave the EU took place (2016), with majorities in Northern Ireland and Scotland voting to remain. People were reminded of the burdens of history but also development progress achieved since Ireland and the UK joined the EU (1973), and how membership facilitated the 1998 Belfast/Good Friday Agreement and Peace Process bringing an end to armed violence (1968–98) in Northern Ireland.
