UNWILLING as I am to interpose in the discussion between Mr. Wallace and Mr. Forbes (supra pp. 27, 74), yet each of those gentlemen having referred to opinions formerly expressed by my brother and myself, it seems fitting that I should offer a few words on the present occasion, if it were only to avoid misapprehension; but I would premise that I have not seen Mr. Forbes's paper read before the Geographical Society or his article in the Fortnightly Review. To this I would add that I am no more ashamed of opinions in the utterance of which before the Royal Society in 1868 I took a share, than I am of having then been a quarter of a century younger than I am now. Whether they are to be considered modified by what I published some halfdozen years later, when I next touched upon the subject, I do not greatly care, and leave to the judgment of those (if any there be) who may take the trouble of comparing the passage in the Philosophical Transactions (1869, pp. 357, 358) with that in the “Encyclopaedia Britannica” (ed. 9, iii. p. 760); and what I now think, or at least thought some eighteen months ago, when the last thing I wrote on the question was passed for press, will I hope be before the public in October.

Abstract: This essay examines the language and diplomatics of a single medieval Hebrew letter by one of the leading letter writers of the Cairo Geniza, Solomon b. Judah, gaon of the Jerusalem academy in the eleventh century. The letter, composed and written by Solomon himself, is addressed to the head of the rival Babylonian faction in Egypt, Sahlān b. Abraham, with whom he enjoyed an often fraught professional relationship. It deals with a number of matters, including the transfer of charitable funds from North Africa to the poor of Jerusalem and the gaon’s opinion of popular biblical exegesis. Solomon b. Judah is one of the most elegant Hebrew stylists to emerge from the documentary corpus of the Cairo Geniza, and his letters provide an important window on the Palestinian gaonate and its relations with Egypt in the second quarter of the eleventh century.

The commemoration of victims of violence Street art, activists and their messages of positivity The present article analyses how street art and activism intertwine in public spaces addressing wider audiences with messages of growing positivity. Via the comparative analysis of two cases revolving around the ‘no mafia’ sign on the outskirts of Palermo (Capaci) and the mural dedicated to Carlo Giuliani at the entrance of the Garbatella area within Rome’s Ostiense quarter of Rome, we explore the genesis of both works, their specific spatial setting and the role of social actors in the conservation of the mural paintings, as well as in the commemoration of victims of violence. In summer 1987, the remains of Frankfurt’s medieval Jewish ghetto were unearthed by construction workers excavating a car park to make way for a new municipal building. When no effort was made by the city authorities or by Frankfurt’s Jewish community to stop the building work, an action group called Rettet den Borneplatz (‘Save Borneplatz’) occupied the site. This article will investigate, firstly, why Frankfurt’s Jewish community failed to do anything to prevent the building work going ahead. Secondly, it will analyse the debates surrounding the excavation which were concerned with whether the Holocaust changed the meaning of this medieval ghetto. The questions raised in these debates included: Is it appropriate to characterize a pre-modern Jewish quarter as a ‘ghetto’ in light of the Jewish ghettos of the early 1940s? AbstractResearch summaryWe apply insights from research in social psychology and labor economics to the domain of entrepreneurial finance and investigate how founder chief executive officers' (founder CEOs') facial attractiveness influences firm valuation. Leveraging the novel context of initial coin offerings (ICOs), we document a pronounced founder CEO beauty premium, with a positive relationship between founder CEO attractiveness and firm valuation. We find only very limited evidence of stereotype‐based evaluations, through the association of founder CEO attractiveness with latent traits such as competence, intelligence, likeability, or trustworthiness. Rather, attractiveness seems to bear economic value per se, especially in a context in which investors base their decisions on a limited information set. Indeed, attractiveness has a sustainable effect on post‐ICO performance.Managerial summaryICOs allow ventures to collect funding from investors using blockchain technology. We leverage this novel funding context, in which information on the ventures and their future prospects is scarce, to empirically investigate whether the founder CEOs' physical attractiveness is associated with increased funding (i.e., amount raised) and post‐funding performance (i.e., buy‐and‐hold returns). We find that ventures with more attractive founder CEOs outperform ventures with less attractive CEOs in both dimensions. For ICO investors, this suggests that ICOs of firms with more attractive founder CEOs are more appealing investment targets. Our findings are also interesting for startups seeking external finance in uncertain contexts, such as ICOs. If startups can appoint attractive leaders, they may have better access to growth capital.

Diversos documentos conservados en la Real Academia de la Historia y en la Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando han permitido reconstruir las circunstancias del hallazgo del conocido tesoro de Quintana Redonda, formado por más de mil denarios de bolśkan, un casco de bronce y dos recipientes de plata. Presentamos los dibujos de estos dos recipientes, un skyphos y un mastos realizados en el momento del descubrimiento y hasta ahora inéditos. La revisión del conjunto permite afirmar que pudo tratarse del tesoro de un militar romano y que su ocultación debe ser anterior a las guerras sertorianas. Several documents preserved in the Real Academia de la Historia and the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando have allowed us to reconstruct the circumstances of the finding of the well-known hoard of Quintana Redonda, which consists of more than a thousand denarii of bolśkan, a bronze helmet and two silver containers. We present the drawings of these two containers, a skyphos and a mastos, made at the time of the discovery, and unknown until now. By examining the set we can state that this could be a Roman soldier’s treasure, and its hiding took place before the Sertorian wars.
