description Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Article 2013 Sweden EnglishPublisher:Antikens kultur och samhällsliv Authors: Höghammar, Kerstin;Höghammar, Kerstin; This paper presents and discusses the dates of two Koan silver issues, drachms with young Herakles/crab and club in incuse, and hemidrachms with Apollo/lyre. A date in the 190s is suggested on several grounds. Weights and diameters correspond with those of HI XII and XIII of the third century, suggesting that they followed shortly thereafter. The other Koan silver issues of the second century were minted on a lower weight-standard. The hoard IGCH 1320 contains examples of both issues, and the other Koan issues in it date to the middle and second half of the third century or the 190s/c.190. Homonyms occur in issues dating to the end of third/early second century. A connection with Kalymnos seems likely for the hemidrachms, this may suggest a date early in the 190s during the war with Philip V.

In 2017, two Roman bridges over the Drava river were discovered in the municipality of Rosegg (Rožek)/Emmersdorf in Carinthia (Austria). Although the existence of a bridge had been known for a long time it could only be identified as definitely Roman after further investigations. In addition, parts of Roman grave monuments and small finds, especially Celtic and Roman coins, have been found at the site within several years. The coin finds are particularly important as witness for the passage and use of the bridges, as they not only provide a chronological framework for the crossing of the Drava river at this point, but they also offer cultural and socio-historical information. According to this, the coins found in the area of the ancient bridges can be interpreted as sacrifices for a safe river crossing. This custom began as early as the late Latène period and was maintained until late Roman times.

Authors: Mateusz Bogucki; Arkadiusz Dymowski; Grzegorz Śnieżko;Mateusz Bogucki; Arkadiusz Dymowski; Grzegorz Śnieżko;Ancient coinage, almost exclusively Roman denarii from the 1st or 2nd century AD, constitutes a small percentage of hoards and other assemblages dated (with the latest coins present) to either the Middle Ages or to the modern period in the territory of present-day Poland. Such finds can be seen as strongly indicating that ancient coinage did function as means of payment at that time. This hypothesis is further supported by written sources. Moreover, ancient coins have also been recorded at other sites in medieval and modern period contexts e.g. in burial sites, which are less easy to interpret than hoards. Finds often include pierced coins and others showing suspension loops, which suggests they may have been used as amulets, jewellery or devotional medals. Other finds, such as Roman coins placed in alms boxes in modern period churches in Silesia, also point to a religious context. At the same time, written sources attest that at least since the Late Middle Ages, Roman denarii were known to common people as ‘St John’s pennies’. The name is associated with a Christian interpretation of the image of the emperor’s head on the coin, resembling that of John the Baptist on a silver platter.

This group of coins may have belonged to a larger hoard that was quickly dispersed after discovery. The case of the peculiar kind of jewellery with coins made by the XIX century Castellani manufactory from Rome, is the reason why a program of data elaboration has been implemented, to manage a quantity of written information (archives and figurative and technical descriptions) together with images: five different sheets are needed to join all the main elements. On this basis, an analogous database can be developed to investigate texts such as the XVI century manuscript by Pirro Ligorio, where coins are used to write a historical prosopography illustrating by means of drawings the history of the most famous old men. However, the coins are not always reproduced in the right way or the same coin is used on different occasions: a program like this can detect these cases. Computer analysis together with traditional humanistic research, will achieve, on a historical basis, remarkable results.

It concerns the production of a complete set of Russian coins in England at the Bolton mills before they produced English coins. Due to the difficult international situation and even more complex logistics, it is not possible to verify the fact on the spot.

They were purchased as a single lot by the Antalya Archaeological Museum from a villager called Rasim Aynur in 1995. The coins were recorded by the present authors in the spring of 1997 as part of a project aimed at studying die numismatic collections in the museum.

As such they represent an important group of examples from the early coinage of Lycia. The hoard was acquired by Fethiye Museum in 1992 after it was confiscated by the police during an operation against antiquities' smugglers. This group of coins may have belonged to a larger hoard that was quickly dispersed after discovery. So, for example, another group of 5 similar coins was also acquired by Fethiye Museum as a result of the same operation.
