    LE ONORIFICENZE PARTICHE DI AUGUSTO, IL TEMPIO DI MARTE ULTORE E L'ARCO NEL FORO ROMANOQuesto articolo esamina le onorificenze conferite ad Augusto in commemorazione dell'accordo con i Parti del 20 a.C. In Dio 54.8.3 è sostenuto che l'impresa fu celebrata con la costruzione di un arco trionfale e di un tempio dedicato a Marte Ultore sul Campidoglio. Quest'ultimo sarebbe stata la sede delle insegne recuperate nell'impresa. Tuttavia, il passaggio sostiene anche che Augusto fu accolto da un'ovazione al suo ritorno a Roma, episodio che si sa non essere vero. In questo articolo viene suggerito che le onorificenze che Dio riporta furono votate dal Senato e o respinte totalmente da Augusto o accettate in una forma modificata. Augusto accettò l'idea di un tempio dove tenere le insegne, ma insistette che questo fosse costruito non sul Campidoglio, ma nel suo progettato nuovo foro. L'idea di un nuovo arco venne invece respinta da Augusto. Tuttavia egli accettò che il triplo arco eretto nel foro romano in onore della vittoria di Azio fosse modificato per commemorare il recupero delle insegne. Ulteriori onorificenze offerte ad Augusto al suo ritorno a Roma nel 19 a.C. includono un carro associato al proposto tempio di Marte Ultore; Augusto accettò che questo fosse eretto nel foro augusteo, e può quindi essere identificato con il carro menzionato nelleRes Gestae35.Tali questioni fanno nuova luce sulla concezione e sul significato simbolico del foro augusteo e del tempio di Marte Ultore e forniscono una nuova soluzione all'annoso problema dell'arco di Augusto nel foro romano. Questo articolo ha anche un più ampio significato, quale illustrazione del modo in cui i processi onorifici potessero fungere da dialogo tra i sudditi e l'imperatore.

    ERA IL PANTHEON DI AGRIPPA IL TEMPIO DI MARSIN CAMPO?Il Pantheon di Agrippa non era un realepantheion, essendo questo appellativo unicamente legato a motivi storici. Non si tratta di un santuario dinastico, perchè uno dei suoi dei tutelari, Marte, non fu mai considerate un antenato divino degliIulii. Un indizio per la sua interpretazione viene dalla sua collocazione topografica. Assieme alla basilica di Nettuno (un memoriale alle vittorie navali di Agrippa, in particolareActium) esso formava un complesso di due edifici simili che si aprivano su una piazza posta fra di loro. Le divinità diActiumerano Apollo, divinità personale di Augusto, e due esperti militari divini, Marte e Nettuno. Il pantheon di Agrippa avrebbe dovuto quindi essere dedicato a Marte e commemorare le vittorie terrestri del suo fondatore. Ciò è corroborato daiFasti Fratrum Arvaliumdel 23 settembre, che citano feste dedicate a:Marti, Neptuno in Campo, Apollini e theatrum Marcelli. I tempii di Marte e Nettunoin Campo, fondati sotto Augusto nella zona delle attività costruttive di Agrippa e dedicati ad Augusto nel giorno del suo compleanno insieme al tempio di Apollo, erano sicuramente memoriali perActium. Poichè la Basilica di Nettuno viene anche riferita come τὸ Ποσειδώνιον, il che rende inevitabile la sua identificazione con il tempio di Nettunoin Campo, il Pantheon di Agrippa avrebbe dovuto essere il tempio di Martein Campo. Questi tempii, costruiti su terreni privati ed assenti dal calendario ufficiale, costituivanosacra privata. Ciò facilitò la loro reinterpretazione, nel successivo periodo dei Giulio-Claudii, discendenti di Marco Antonio, rispettivamente di mal definitopantheion(non unaaedes publica, poichè le iscrizioni conservate da Adriano non citano alcuna divinità) e di basilica.

    The name and date of the little round temple in the Forum Boarium at Rome (popularly known as the ‘Temple of Vesta’) are long-standing problems of Roman topography. Its identification is still quite uncertain. On the chronology, however, general opinion seems to have hardened and, for reasons which are discussed below, most scholars appear now to believe that the building is Augustan, rejecting the attractive theory of Altmann and Delbrueck that it was erected some time in the later second century B.C. The present article is not concerned at all with the problem of identification, nor does it attempt the full and detailed study of the design and construction without which a definitive solution of the problem of dating is clearly impossible. Its purpose is twofold: to draw attention to some significant features of the architectural design and decoration, and to illustrate and discuss some surviving fragments which can be shown to belong to the lost entablture, but which seem hitherto to have escaped attention.The foundations of the temple were first exposed by Valadier in the early nineteenth century, in the course of restoration work undertaken to free the building of later accretions and to consolidate the ancient remains.

    Cyrene's largest religious building, the great Temple of Zeus on the north-eastern hill of the city, has been the subject of several explorations. Its cella was partially dug out by Smith and Porcher in 1861, and was completely cleared of soil by the late Giacomo Guidi in 1926, in the excavation which brought to light the famous head of Zeus, pieced together from over a hundred fragments. Then, in the years 1939–1942, fuller work was carried out by Dr. Gennaro Pesce, who published a detailed report with admirable promptness. Despite the interruptions caused by the North African campaigns of the World War, Pesce was able to clear the greater part of the Temple and its fallen peristasis. At the conclusion of his work only the opisthodomos remained unexcavated, although much fallen stone still encumbered the pronaos and the eastern portico.

    NOTA SULLA DENOMINAZIONE MEDIEVALE DEL COSIDDETTO “TEMPIO DELLA FORTUNA VIRILIS” A ROMAIl piccolo tempio repubblicano, che si trova presso la sponda del Tevere, generalmente noto come “Tempio della Fortuna Virile”, fu convertito, nei primi secoli del Medioevo, in una chiesa cristiana. L'identificazione della sua dedicazione è stata oggetto di controversie. L'autore ritiene che, se lo Stefano che era menzionato quale fondatore della chiesa in una perduta iscrizione può essere riconosciuto nello Stefano che detenne la carica di “secundicerius” nei primi anni del pontificate di Giovanni VIII, ciò raforzerebbe l'ipotesi avanzata da coloro che identificavano questo edificio con la chiesa di “S. Maria Sccundicerii”.

    UNA NUOVA LETTURA DELL'ISCRIZIONE A MOSAICO NEL TEMPIO DI DIANA TIFATINAQuesto articolo propone un testo completamente rivisitato dell'iscrizione a mosaico localizzata nel pavimento del tempio di Diana Tifatina, che attualmente forma parte della basilica di Sant' Angelo in Formis (San Michele Arcangelo). Il tempio, situato appena a nord dell'antica Capua, era uno dei più importanti santuari della Campania in epoca romana, ed era conosciuto in tutto il mondo romano. L'iscrizione, che è gravemente danneggiata, era stata precedentemente datata al 74 a.C. e menziona, fra le altre cose, la ricostruzione del tempio da parte di un gruppo di magistri. La nuova lettura, oltre ad apportare importanti correzioni al testo per quanto riguarda i nomi degli individui e le attività per le quali questi erano responsabili, indica che il testo era stato erroneamente datato, e che in effetti appartiene ad un periodo alquanto diverso della storia italiana.

    Gli studiosi si sono a lungo chiesti perché un'aula absidata e il suo vestibolo adiacente, appartenente al Foro della Pace di Vespasiano, doveva essere stato scelto come sito per la prima chiesa cristiana nel Foro Romano, quella dei Santi Cosma e Damiano, un progetto di Papa Felice IV (526–30). Con questo articolo si suggerisce che uno dei fattori che ha influenzato la scelta può essere stata la precedente presenza in quest'area dei tesori tratti dal Tempio di Gerusalemme, rubati a Roma dai Vandali nel 455. Questa storia puó spiegare l'aggiunta di un candelabro d'oro alla decorazione musiva dell'arco di trionfo — che altrimenti segue l'iconografia di San Paolo fuori le mura —, come pure l'inusuale espressione della dedica scritta.

    Francesco di Giorgio, the Sienese architect and artist, visited Rome c. 1470. By looking at his plan of the ‘porticho del Champitolio’, it is possible to reconstruct not only what Francesco di Giorgio saw on the Monte Tarpeo, but also what Poggio Bracciolini, Flavio Biondo, Pietro del Massaio and others saw there. It was apparently a notable site, an evocative ruin worthy of commentary, artistic representation and imaginative reconstruction. Whatever temple remains continued to be visible, however, these were insufficient to suggest that they were originally part of the temple. By the end of the fifteenth century, the temple had been lost. None the less, Francesco di Giorgio unwittingly documented the last standing columns of the Temple of Jupiter Optimus Maximus.

    IL TEMPIO DI ADRIANO A CYZICUS E L'ATTEGGIAMENTO ROMANO VERSO LE COSTRUZIONI COLOSSALIPartendo dalPanegirico su Cyzicusdi Elio Aristide, questo articolo esplora l'atteggiamento romano verso le imprese costruttive colossali. La struttura di questo contributo è data prima dall'idea delle Sette Meraviglie del Mondo, che suggerisce come tali imprese costruttive venissero ammirate per la loro grandezza e per il livello di sofisticazione tecnologica, in particolare quando realizzate su una scala che andava ben oltre il regno delle normali esperienze umane. Questo tipo di costruzioni sembrava sfidare la natura ma, allo stesso tempo, dimostrava i limiti dell'ingenuità umana e dava unostatusa coloro per i quali questi lavori erano stati creati. Allo stesso tempo, l'atto della costruzione era visto come un simbolo di esistenza civilizzata, e viene dunque dimostrato come le rappresentazioni sia scritte che pittoriche degli edifici avessero un'importanza speciale. Ciò conduce alia discussione dellamagnificentiae del valore della costruzione per il mecenate romano come contributo alia vita della comunita. L'articolo si conclude con un esame delle implicazioni morali delle costruzioni su grande scala, collocandolo all'interno di un discorso più ampio sulle idee romane conflittuali sul rapporto tra umanità e natura, e sul'antico dibattito sulle origini della civilizzazione e l'idea del progresso umano.

    LE ONORIFICENZE PARTICHE DI AUGUSTO, IL TEMPIO DI MARTE ULTORE E L'ARCO NEL FORO ROMANOQuesto articolo esamina le onorificenze conferite ad Augusto in commemorazione dell'accordo con i Parti del 20 a.C. In Dio 54.8.3 è sostenuto che l'impresa fu celebrata con la costruzione di un arco trionfale e di un tempio dedicato a Marte Ultore sul Campidoglio. Quest'ultimo sarebbe stata la sede delle insegne recuperate nell'impresa. Tuttavia, il passaggio sostiene anche che Augusto fu accolto da un'ovazione al suo ritorno a Roma, episodio che si sa non essere vero. In questo articolo viene suggerito che le onorificenze che Dio riporta furono votate dal Senato e o respinte totalmente da Augusto o accettate in una forma modificata. Augusto accettò l'idea di un tempio dove tenere le insegne, ma insistette che questo fosse costruito non sul Campidoglio, ma nel suo progettato nuovo foro. L'idea di un nuovo arco venne invece respinta da Augusto. Tuttavia egli accettò che il triplo arco eretto nel foro romano in onore della vittoria di Azio fosse modificato per commemorare il recupero delle insegne. Ulteriori onorificenze offerte ad Augusto al suo ritorno a Roma nel 19 a.C. includono un carro associato al proposto tempio di Marte Ultore; Augusto accettò che questo fosse eretto nel foro augusteo, e può quindi essere identificato con il carro menzionato nelleRes Gestae35.Tali questioni fanno nuova luce sulla concezione e sul significato simbolico del foro augusteo e del tempio di Marte Ultore e forniscono una nuova soluzione all'annoso problema dell'arco di Augusto nel foro romano. Questo articolo ha anche un più ampio significato, quale illustrazione del modo in cui i processi onorifici potessero fungere da dialogo tra i sudditi e l'imperatore.

    ERA IL PANTHEON DI AGRIPPA IL TEMPIO DI MARSIN CAMPO?Il Pantheon di Agrippa non era un realepantheion, essendo questo appellativo unicamente legato a motivi storici. Non si tratta di un santuario dinastico, perchè uno dei suoi dei tutelari, Marte, non fu mai considerate un antenato divino degliIulii. Un indizio per la sua interpretazione viene dalla sua collocazione topografica. Assieme alla basilica di Nettuno (un memoriale alle vittorie navali di Agrippa, in particolareActium) esso formava un complesso di due edifici simili che si aprivano su una piazza posta fra di loro. Le divinità diActiumerano Apollo, divinità personale di Augusto, e due esperti militari divini, Marte e Nettuno. Il pantheon di Agrippa avrebbe dovuto quindi essere dedicato a Marte e commemorare le vittorie terrestri del suo fondatore. Ciò è corroborato daiFasti Fratrum Arvaliumdel 23 settembre, che citano feste dedicate a:Marti, Neptuno in Campo, Apollini e theatrum Marcelli. I tempii di Marte e Nettunoin Campo, fondati sotto Augusto nella zona delle attività costruttive di Agrippa e dedicati ad Augusto nel giorno del suo compleanno insieme al tempio di Apollo, erano sicuramente memoriali perActium. Poichè la Basilica di Nettuno viene anche riferita come τὸ Ποσειδώνιον, il che rende inevitabile la sua identificazione con il tempio di Nettunoin Campo, il Pantheon di Agrippa avrebbe dovuto essere il tempio di Martein Campo. Questi tempii, costruiti su terreni privati ed assenti dal calendario ufficiale, costituivanosacra privata. Ciò facilitò la loro reinterpretazione, nel successivo periodo dei Giulio-Claudii, discendenti di Marco Antonio, rispettivamente di mal definitopantheion(non unaaedes publica, poichè le iscrizioni conservate da Adriano non citano alcuna divinità) e di basilica.

    The name and date of the little round temple in the Forum Boarium at Rome (popularly known as the ‘Temple of Vesta’) are long-standing problems of Roman topography. Its identification is still quite uncertain. On the chronology, however, general opinion seems to have hardened and, for reasons which are discussed below, most scholars appear now to believe that the building is Augustan, rejecting the attractive theory of Altmann and Delbrueck that it was erected some time in the later second century B.C. The present article is not concerned at all with the problem of identification, nor does it attempt the full and detailed study of the design and construction without which a definitive solution of the problem of dating is clearly impossible. Its purpose is twofold: to draw attention to some significant features of the architectural design and decoration, and to illustrate and discuss some surviving fragments which can be shown to belong to the lost entablture, but which seem hitherto to have escaped attention.The foundations of the temple were first exposed by Valadier in the early nineteenth century, in the course of restoration work undertaken to free the building of later accretions and to consolidate the ancient remains.

    Cyrene's largest religious building, the great Temple of Zeus on the north-eastern hill of the city, has been the subject of several explorations. Its cella was partially dug out by Smith and Porcher in 1861, and was completely cleared of soil by the late Giacomo Guidi in 1926, in the excavation which brought to light the famous head of Zeus, pieced together from over a hundred fragments. Then, in the years 1939–1942, fuller work was carried out by Dr. Gennaro Pesce, who published a detailed report with admirable promptness. Despite the interruptions caused by the North African campaigns of the World War, Pesce was able to clear the greater part of the Temple and its fallen peristasis. At the conclusion of his work only the opisthodomos remained unexcavated, although much fallen stone still encumbered the pronaos and the eastern portico.

L'identificazione della sua dedicazione è stata oggetto di controversie. L'autore ritiene che, se lo Stefano che era menzionato quale fondatore della chiesa in una perduta iscrizione può essere riconosciuto nello Stefano che detenne la carica di “secundicerius” nei primi anni del pontificate di Giovanni VIII, ciò raforzerebbe l'ipotesi avanzata da coloro che identificavano questo edificio con la chiesa di “S. Maria Sccundicerii”.

    UNA NUOVA LETTURA DELL'ISCRIZIONE A MOSAICO NEL TEMPIO DI DIANA TIFATINAQuesto articolo propone un testo completamente rivisitato dell'iscrizione a mosaico localizzata nel pavimento del tempio di Diana Tifatina, che attualmente forma parte della basilica di Sant' Angelo in Formis (San Michele Arcangelo). Il tempio, situato appena a nord dell'antica Capua, era uno dei più importanti santuari della Campania in epoca romana, ed era conosciuto in tutto il mondo romano. L'iscrizione, che è gravemente danneggiata, era stata precedentemente datata al 74 a.C. e menziona, fra le altre cose, la ricostruzione del tempio da parte di un gruppo di magistri. La nuova lettura, oltre ad apportare importanti correzioni al testo per quanto riguarda i nomi degli individui e le attività per le quali questi erano responsabili, indica che il testo era stato erroneamente datato, e che in effetti appartiene ad un periodo alquanto diverso della storia italiana.

    Gli studiosi si sono a lungo chiesti perché un'aula absidata e il suo vestibolo adiacente, appartenente al Foro della Pace di Vespasiano, doveva essere stato scelto come sito per la prima chiesa cristiana nel Foro Romano, quella dei Santi Cosma e Damiano, un progetto di Papa Felice IV (526–30). Con questo articolo si suggerisce che uno dei fattori che ha influenzato la scelta può essere stata la precedente presenza in quest'area dei tesori tratti dal Tempio di Gerusalemme, rubati a Roma dai Vandali nel 455. Questa storia puó spiegare l'aggiunta di un candelabro d'oro alla decorazione musiva dell'arco di trionfo — che altrimenti segue l'iconografia di San Paolo fuori le mura —, come pure l'inusuale espressione della dedica scritta.

    Francesco di Giorgio, the Sienese architect and artist, visited Rome c. 1470. By looking at his plan of the ‘porticho del Champitolio’, it is possible to reconstruct not only what Francesco di Giorgio saw on the Monte Tarpeo, but also what Poggio Bracciolini, Flavio Biondo, Pietro del Massaio and others saw there. It was apparently a notable site, an evocative ruin worthy of commentary, artistic representation and imaginative reconstruction. Whatever temple remains continued to be visible, however, these were insufficient to suggest that they were originally part of the temple. By the end of the fifteenth century, the temple had been lost. None the less, Francesco di Giorgio unwittingly documented the last standing columns of the Temple of Jupiter Optimus Maximus.

    IL TEMPIO DI ADRIANO A CYZICUS E L'ATTEGGIAMENTO ROMANO VERSO LE COSTRUZIONI COLOSSALIPartendo dalPanegirico su Cyzicusdi Elio Aristide, questo articolo esplora l'atteggiamento romano verso le imprese costruttive colossali. La struttura di questo contributo è data prima dall'idea delle Sette Meraviglie del Mondo, che suggerisce come tali imprese costruttive venissero ammirate per la loro grandezza e per il livello di sofisticazione tecnologica, in particolare quando realizzate su una scala che andava ben oltre il regno delle normali esperienze umane. Questo tipo di costruzioni sembrava sfidare la natura ma, allo stesso tempo, dimostrava i limiti dell'ingenuità umana e dava unostatusa coloro per i quali questi lavori erano stati creati. Allo stesso tempo, l'atto della costruzione era visto come un simbolo di esistenza civilizzata, e viene dunque dimostrato come le rappresentazioni sia scritte che pittoriche degli edifici avessero un'importanza speciale. Ciò conduce alia discussione dellamagnificentiae del valore della costruzione per il mecenate romano come contributo alia vita della comunita. L'articolo si conclude con un esame delle implicazioni morali delle costruzioni su grande scala, collocandolo all'interno di un discorso più ampio sulle idee romane conflittuali sul rapporto tra umanità e natura, e sul'antico dibattito sulle origini della civilizzazione e l'idea del progresso umano.
