  • Authors: Moshe Fischer; Asher Ovadiah; Israel Roll;

    Four Greek inscriptions have been discovered to date in the Roman temple complex at Kedesh (Tel Qedesh) in the Upper Galilee.' Two came to light during the last century, while an additional two were discovered in the course of the archaeological excavations of 1981 (Ovadiah a.o. 1982; Fischer, Ovadiah and Roll 1984; Ovadiah, Fischer and Roll 1985). The first two inscriptions were reviewed by the authors in the preliminary report on the excavations (Fischer, Ovadiah and Roll 1984:166-167) which dealt with the architecture and identification of the deity of the temple. In the present article, the epigraphic and chronological aspects are discussed. Since inscription 3 has been fully published (Fischer, Ovadiah and Roll 1982), only its principal aspects are presented here.

  • Authors: Mordechai Aviam; Hisao Kuwabara; Shuichi Hasegawa; Yitzhak Paz;

    A Jewish farmstead dated to the 1st–2nd centuries CE was discovered during excavations at Tel Rekhesh in the Lower Galilee. In the centre of the western perimeter wall of the structure, a 9-m-square assembly room with an ashlar block bench along the walls was unearthed. It had an entrance in the north and two bases for pillars in the centre to support a flat roof. Given all these features, it has been suggested that the building was a rural synagogue. If correct, this building is one of a small group of synagogues in the Land of Israel that dates to the late Second Temple period. The proximity of Tel Rekhesh to Nazareth offers another perspective to this discovery—an association with Jesus and his ministry in the Galilee.

  • Authors: Yoav Farhi; David Ben-Shlomo;

    The authors introduce new numismatic evidence from a recent excavation at Tel Hebron (Tell Rumeida) which indicates that a Second Temple period settlement was located on the biblical mound. The excavation―which revealed a Hasmonean through Late Roman–Early Byzantine domestic and industrial quarter―sheds new light on the significance and ethnic structure of the town of Hebron, in particular during the Hasmonean and Early Roman periods. The article is the first published numismatic biography of this important site.

    AbstractThe article discusses five controversial historical-archaeological topics that appear in historiographical and prophetic texts referring to Jerusalem in the First and Second Temple periods: (1) The location of the Gate of the Guards (Saar hrsim) which, according to the story of the rebellion against Athaliah (2 Kgs 11), connected the palace to the Temple; (2) the significance of the gate's relocation for the placement of the palace and Temple on the Temple Mount; (3) the geographic boundaries of ir dāvīd ('the City of David') at different periods according to some biblical texts, in particular Isa 22:9–11a; (4) the delineation of the new fortification on the Southwestern Hill according to Jer 31:38–40a; (5) the possible location of Migdal-eder (Mic 4:8) in light of 2 Chr 26:9 and Neh 3:24–25.
