The paper is devoted to production of Marl-based pottery in the 6th–4th c. BCE (the Late Period). The study of this issue is complicated by a small number of archaeological sites where pottery workshops of the Late Period were found. This research is based on our knowledge of various workshops at Memphis, pottery from archaeological excavations and fabrics. Based on this data, an attempt is made to suppose where pottery workshops for production of Marl and Mixed vessels were located.

    The Cambridge Archaeological Unit (CAU) prepared a desk-based assessment for the site in Godmanchester in 2008, and trial trenching in the same year. The main site east of the A1198 was then excavated in 2014–15, and the final small areas to the west of the A1198 in 2020. The excavations revealed: • Neolithic pits and residual flints • an Early Iron Age pit alignment • a major Middle Iron Age boundary ditch which extended over 1.2 kilometres • an earlier Middle Iron Age open settlement by the pit alignment • a later Middle Iron Age enclosed settlement to the south, apparently occupied up until the Roman conquest for AD43 • a small Roman single-house settlement which was abandoned in the Early Roman period • Roman era-enclosures which survived into the Middle Roman period, and received a number of unusual inhumation burials—one of them accompanied by a dog and horse • Early Anglo-Saxon pot-built houses and sunken feature buildings, extending from a known settlement to the north under the business park site.

    The sample studied includes 85 Inca provincial ceramic individuals, 2 experimental ceramics prepared from clays collected at Ranchillos (MDZ140) and RT285 (MDZ149), and 1 firing structure unearthed at RT285 (MDZ150). The experimental ceramics and the firing structure were included to get some information about available clays in the area. Twenty-two out of 85 are ceramics unearthed at 12 sites from the Central Western Argentina (CWA), from three different areas: Uco Valley (n = 22), Uspallata Valley (n = 35, plus the MDZ140 experimental ceramic), and the foothills south of San Juan province (n = 28, plus the MDZ149 experimental ceramic and the MDZ150 firing structure). The sample includes the possible production centres of Tambillos, in Uspallata Valley, and RT285, in the foothills south of San Juan province, their possible distribution channels, and examples of all types of Inca provincial pottery (Viluco fine or ceremonial vessels –urpu, ollas and pucos–, and utilitarian storage vessels). This archaeometric study have comprised, besides scanning electron microscopy (SEM-EDX), X-ray fluorescence (WD-XRF) and X-ray diffraction (PXRD).

    Authors: Hinders, Nathalie;

    Alvastra pile dwelling is one of the richest Middle Neolithic sites known in Sweden regarding the preservation of organic material and the display of different types of artifacts. The pottery assemblage in particular has been discussed more extensively than other materials in previous research. Funnel beaker and Pitted Ware pottery have been found at the site, together with the so-called pile dwelling pottery – a hitherto uncharacterised pottery type. Due to the fact that the pottery has played a big part in the interpretations of the site, the presented results concerning pottery and pottery craft also affect the understanding of the pile dwelling as a whole. Visual analyses of the pottery, based on the recording of craft specific parameters, have resulted in the categorization of the previously debated pile dwelling pottery. Furthermore, the results point to pottery production at the site and are strengthened by the presence of other material assemblages from the same cultural layer, such as bone artifacts and lithics. Pottery and other specialized crafts are suggested to have been a part of the activities at the pile dwelling. Moving towards an understanding that Alvastra pile dwelling was, among other things, a place for craft, challenges previous interpretations of the site as being foremost a ritualistic space and a place for the dead.

    Authors: Busto Zapico, Miguel; Cirelli, Enrico;

    The aim of this paper is to determine the degree of standardization within certain Late Roman pottery productions. We selected a form well represented in the ceramic contexts identified in the excavations of the Late Antique port-canal of Classe, the Hayes 85 small bowl. The presence of a significant number of fragments and whole pieces of these forms at the port of Classe provided us with sufficient cases for statistical analyses and conclusive data. This vessel was considered a rare form in Hayes’ monumental book. New discoveries of the last ten years show us how much we still have to understand about the characteristics of Late Roman production, trade and distribution. With this in mind, we used a new statistical method to analyse the main changes in the profile of this type and its variants.

    Authors: Öz, Cüneyt;

    This article covers the twenty-eight embossed skyphoi found between 2018 and 2020 during the excavations of the ancient city of Blaundos, located within the borders of Sülümenli Village of Ulubey District of Uşak Province. While the majority of the skyphoi were discovered on the western, southern, and northwestern slopes of the city, some of them were unearthed during the excavations carried out in the propylon and the main street. These skyphoi were evaluated in seven different groups: pinecone, imbricated leaf, long petal, floral, figured, embossed dot, and other pieces. The clay, slip, form, and decoration features of the skyphoi in Blaundos are similar to the Laodikeia and Tripolis samples from which the Lycos Skyphoi were produced. Therefore, the dating suggested for the skyphoi from Laodikeia and Tripolis, ranging from the second half of the 1st century BCE to the end of the 1st century CE, has also been proposed for the Blaundos skyphoi. The Lycos Skyphoi, which were produced as the contemporaries of Lead-Glazed Ceramics, and thought to have continued to be in use until the end of the 1st century CE, were not produced only for the local needs of the Lycos Valley settlements. The presence of skyphos of this type in Blaundos indicates that they were also exported to the neighboring cities. The limited number of finds of Lycos Skyphoi in Anatolia must be related to the preference for Lead-Glazed Ceramics, which were more popular in the period they were produced.

    The sixty ceramic individuals studied in this project were recovered in Empúries, Besalú, and Rosselló counties (Catalonia). These ceramics dated to the 10th—11th centuries AD belong to a historical period related to the creation and consolidation of the Catalan Counties. This period is poorly studied from an archaeological point of view, so there is little information about ceramic production and distribution, which this research aims to change by identifying the provenance and manufacturing techniques. Also, to reveal if there existed a shared technical tradition on both sides of the Albera range. For this purpose, the ceramic sherds have been chemically and mineralogically characterised. Their microstructure and sintering state have been determined, and petrographic analyses have been performed too. This archaeometric study has also considered both historical and archaeological data. Analyses of the ceramics have comprised, among others, X-ray fluorescence (WD-XRF) and X-ray diffraction (PXRD). Results confirm distribution patterns and the evidence of similar technical traditions in different Counties. Finally, the contrast with the database enables us to relate some of the individuals analysed in this study to some others from the area of the County of Empúries dating from the Visigoth period (7th—8th centuries) according to their exceptionally high concentrations of Na2O. The data for the latter 5 Visigoth ceramics are also included.

    Authors: Hinders, Nathalie;
