    Abstract The estimated firing temperature and atmosphere in which a piece of pottery was produced can be identified by comparing the concentration of Fe3 + between the piece of pottery and clay with a similar chemical composition that were subjected to identical thermal treatments. This procedure was applied to modern pottery donated by indigenous people and to a set of archaeological pottery. The modern pottery that was used for cooking for two years exhibited higher Fe3 + concentrations than the clay that was fired at any temperature; thus, the parameters of production were not identified in this pottery. The same procedure can be used to identify the use of a piece of pottery as a pan. Of the set of 14 pieces of archaeological pottery examined in this study, 12 were able to have their production parameters identified, and 2 fragments were identified with Fe3 + concentrations that were higher than that of the fired clay, suggesting that these pieces were used as pans. The results of this study indicate that the concentration of Fe3 + can be used to determine if a piece of pottery was used for cooking; additionally, if a piece of pottery was not used for cooking, then the proposed method can identify the parameters of the piece of pottery's production.

    Este artigo apresenta a linguagem da cerâmica registrada nos dicionários Tesoro e Vocabulario de la lengua Guaraní, publicados respectivamente em 1639 e 1640 pelo missionário jesuíta Antonio Ruiz de Montoya. Selecionamos 445 palavras e frases para compor cenários etnográficos. Nosso objetivo é compreender a cadeia operatória de produção das vasilhas cerâmicas Guaraní e alguns dos contextos de seus usos domésticos. O léxico apresenta grande potencial para estudos de linguística histórica comparada com outras línguas do tronco Tupí e de tecnologia cerâmica arqueológica. This paper discuss the pottery language registered in the dictionaries Tesoro and Vocabulario de la lengua Guaraní, published respectively in 1639 and 1640 by the jesuit missionary Antonio Ruiz de Montoya. We selected 445 words and phrases to compose ethnographical settings. Our aim is to understand the operational sequence production of the Guaraní ceramic vessels, and some contexts of its domestic use. The lexicon presents great potential for comparative studies of historical linguistics about the Tupí languages and the archaeological pottery technology amongst.

    ABSTRACT: According to the 16th century ethno historical documents, Guarani pottery decoration and formal variability were related to distinct kinds of vessel's use and painted pottery was used mainly in ritual situations. We analyze archaeological pottery collections from Rio Grande do Sul North shore and Norwest region, seeking to explore the relationship between graphic patterns and distinct functional types of vessels, as well the regional and/or chronological stylistic variation of the sample. In the case study here presented, we suggestthat painted pottery has high potential for the analysis of issues related to pre-colonial Guarani alterity and their social cosmological universe.RESUMO: De acordo com as fontes etnohistóricas do século XVII, a decoração e a variabilidade formal da cerâmica Guarani estavam relacionadas aos diferentes tipos de uso dos vasilhames, sendo a cerâmica pintada usada principalmente em situações rituais. Com oobjetivo de explorar a relação entre os grafismos e as categorias funcionais de vasilhas, bem como as variações estilísticas regionais e/ou cronológicas apresentadas pelas amostras, analisamos coleções de cerâmicas arqueológicas do litoral norte e da região noroeste do RioGrande do Sul. No estudo de caso aqui apresentado, sugerimos que a cerâmica pintada apresenta alto potencial para análise de problemáticas relativas à alteridade e ao universo sócio-cosmológico Guarani pré-colonial.

    Do recente interesse da arqueologia brasileira pela análise e interpretação dos padrões gráficos apresentados na cerâmica policrômica Guarani, surge a necessidade de desenvolver e discutir metodologias para sua representação. Neste sentido, analisamos três propostas metodológicas para a reprodução gráfica de padrões decorativos de distintas categorias funcionais de vasilhas Guarani, baseadas nos sistemas de representação do desenvolvimento de superfície, bem como dos sistemas cilíndrico e cônico. Após a análise dos resultados, constatou-se que cada um destes modelos de representação apresenta vantagens e desvantagens segundo a categoria formal da vasilha que contém os desenhos e os possíveis objetivos da pesquisa. Given the recent interest of Brazilian archeology on the analysis and interpretation of Guarani ceramics graphic patterns, there is a need to develop and discuss methodologies for graphic representation of the paintings. In this sense, three methods for graphic representation of decorative patterns in Guarani ceramics are analyzed here, based on reproduction of surface, as well as the cylindrical and conic systems of representation. After analyzing the results, we found out that each of these models of representation presents advantages and disadvantages depending on the formal category of the decorated pottery, as well as the research goals.

    Authors: Maria Mercedes Martinez Okumura;

    As primeiras evidências arqueológicas a respeito do povoamento do litoral brasileiro durante a pré-história são a expansão de povos associados a sítios arqueológicos denominados sambaquis. Tais sítios ocorrem na costa brasileira, da Bahia até o Rio Grande do Sul, entre 6500 e 800 anos. Um dos modelos de dispersão inicial desses povos propõe que esta teria ocorrido em dois grandes eixos que se expandiram a partir da divisa entre São Paulo e Paraná. Há cerca de mil anos, ocorre o aparecimento de cerâmica em alguns sítios litorâneos, relacionada a grupos provenientes do interior do país. Modelos baseados na análise da morfologia craniana desses grupos indicam que em Santa Catarina, no seu litoral central, teria ocorrido a interação de dois grupos biológicos distintos antes da chegada da cerâmica, ao passo que no litoral norte de Santa Catarina, a chegada da cerâmica parece coincidir com a chegada de uma nova população. O objetivo da tese é testar as seguintes hipóteses através da análise morfológica craniana: I) os povos dos sambaquis representam, em termos regionais, pelo menos dois grupos com morfologias cranianas distintas, cuja dispersão coincide com dois bolsões regionais, um ao norte e outro ao sul de São Paulo; II) no litoral central de Santa Catarina existiram duas populações pré-cerâmicas com morfologia distinta, e com o aparecimento da cerâmica, ao menos no norte de Santa Catarina, surgiu uma nova morfologia craniana. Os resultados obtidos apontam para uma diferenciação de dois grupos principais, cuja clivagem se dá na região do Paraná. Entretanto, a hipótese de que há dois grupos morfologicamente distintos em Santa Catarina antes da chegada da cerâmica não encontra apoio nos resultados obtidos. Em relação aos grupos ceramistas catarinenses, parece haver uma relativa diferenciação entre estes e as séries sem cerâmica dessa região. The first archaeological evidence for the prehistoric colonization of the Brazilian coast is the expansion of groups associated with the archaeological sites of “sambaqui" (shellmound). These sites are distributed across the Brazilian coast, from Bahia to Rio Grande do Sul, and date to between 6500 and 800 yBP. An initial dispersion of these groups was proposed from the boundary between São Paulo and Paraná. Pottery is found in some shelmound around 1,000 years ago and is associated to inland groups. Models based on cranial morphology suggest that on the central coast of Santa Catarina, there are two distinct groups before the occurrence of pottery, while on the north coast of Santa Catarina, the advent of pottery seems to coincide with the arrival of a new population. The objective of this study is to test the following hypothesis through cranial metrical and non-metrical analysis: I)the dispersion of shellmound populations in two distinct waves, will be inferred by differences in cranial morphology; II)on the central coast of Santa Catarina two distinct populations were present before the occurrence of pottery, and the arrival of ceramist populations brought a new cranial morphology at least in north Santa Catarina. Our results point to a differentiation of two main groups with a boundary in Paraná region. However, we did not find reasonable evidence for the presence of different cranial morphologies in Santa Catarina before the occurrence of pottery. Nonetheless, the occurrence of pottery coincides with the emergence of two relatively different cranial morphologies in Santa Catarina.

Itakeinto consideration two distinct repertoires of images: the paintings of Attic vases (late sixth –early fourth centuryB.C.)and the figurative decoration on the mirrors themselves,in relief or engraved (late fifth –early third centuryB.C.). The central focus of the analysis is the iconography registered on mirrors produced in the four main manufacturingcenters of Greece (Athens, Corinth, Chalcis, Ionia). Greeks produced three types of mirrors between Late Archaic and Early Hellenistic times:hand-mirrorswith handle, table mirrorswith stand, and round box mirrors, the latter being the most important to this study.Box mirrors may bear iconography on their folding cover, in relief on the external surface(repoussé)or engraved on the interior surface. In contrast to the iconography of the vases of Magna Graecia, in which the mystic component stands out from the other symbolic aspects, in the case of the iconography of Greek mirrors erotic symbolism and the relation with the goddess Aphrodite predominate.This goddess protects all categories of women (hetaeraeand"citizen-women", married or brides) and all modalities of eroticism.Under the auspices of love and desire, the symbolic power of the mirror can be related to an inclusive eroticism,whichunites, that which society separates.

    We report here the results from Mössbauer measurements of pottery samples from the Meggers and Evans collection, corresponding to different phases collected by these authors at the islands of Marajó, Caviana, Mexiana [1]. The magnetic ratio R (area of the six lines component divided by the total spectral area) has been measured at room, liquid nitrogen and liquid helium temperatures. A marked difference in temperature behaviour between samples of various ages has been observed. With the oldest ones (Ananatuba phase, 980 ± 200 B. C.) an enhancement of the magnetic ratio occurs at low temperatures whereas with the more recent samples (Marajoara phase, 480-690 ± 200 A. D.) this ratio changes little in the temperature range investigated. These results are similar to those reported from the comparative study of Mycenean-Minoan pottery with Byzantine and modern clay samples [2]. It has been suggested that this time dependence of the Mössbauer spectra arises from a slow disintegration process of the particle size of the magnetic iron oxides in the pottery. Other factors influence the Mössbauer spectra of the pottery samples such as particle size distribution of the original clay, firing temperature, and burial site. The aging effect involving the iron oxides appears to be closely connected to an hydration mechanism. A correlation was observed between the age of the samples and the peak corresponding to the water released by heating at 100 °C as measured in a thermogravimetric balance.

    Através de uma abordagem da antropologia social, baseada no conceito de lugar antropológico de Marc Augé, este artigo pretende estabelecer uma breve análise de como os coros musicais se relacionam com a ideia de cidadania ateniense que se construiu a partir da tirania até as reformas de Clístenes. Esse contexto histórico caracteriza-se pela instauração da isonomia – governo baseado na igualdade dos cidadãos perante a lei (nómos) – e tem como algumas de suas características principais a participação popular na boulé, nos festivais cívicos e na falange hoplita. A função dos coros musicais como componente de formação da cidadania ateniense teria se dado a partir de sua relação com a falange hoplita e de sua presença nos grandes festivais cívicos que ocorriam desde o período da tirania (560-510 a.C.). Encontramos evidências dessas relações na documentação imagética das cerâmicas áticas, exemplificadas neste artigo pelo skýphos de autoria de Heron

    This chapter focuses on some of the cultural changes that Africans and their descendants endured in Brazil during the eighteenth century. Considering a particular pottery shape found both in Brazil and Africa, some of the material practices of slaves beyond their African background are examined. Adopting a comparative approach, I try to demonstrate the fluid and situational nature of these practices, as well as some of the mechanisms that gave birth to diasporic cultures in Brazil during the slave trade period.

    Authors: Didoné, Katia Rosa;

    Existem poucos estudos científicos demonstrando o comportamento térmico de edificações construídas com os materiais cerâmicos, especificamente o material solo-cimento, como também, há a variabilidade dos valores de propriedades físico-térmicas dos referidos materiais, que por sua vez, geram a dúvida de qual referência utilizar no planejamento correto de edificações para o atendimento do desempenho térmico exigido pelas normas vigentes. Com isso, a pesquisa teve como objetivo analisar o comportamento térmico de edificações construídas com paredes de solo cimento e de cerâmica vermelha inseridas na zona bioclimática brasileira 6 (ZB6) para contribuir com o estudo das propriedades físico-térmicas dos materiais cerâmicos. Para tal foram realizados cálculos térmicos pelo método prescritivo em conformidade com a NBR 15220 (ABNT 2005) e medições in loco nas edificações construídas em alvenaria de blocos de solo-cimento e de cerâmica vermelha. Posteriormente, foram realizadas correlações entre características térmicas e as aferições de temperatura e umidade relativa do ar do interior das edificações, a fim de se obter o desempenho térmico das mesmas. Com os resultados obtidos foi possível perceber que as edificações em envelopes verticais construídos com blocos de solo cimento e de cerâmica vermelha apresentaram desempenho térmico semelhante na ZB6; sendo que para o material solo cimento as propriedades físico-térmicas de densidade 1890 kg/m³, condutividade térmica 0,38 W/(m.K) e calor específico 1,30 kJ/(kg.K) são favoráveis ao bom desempenho térmico desta matériaprima, no entanto, para que estas sejam potencialmente destacadas deve-se compatibilizar o formato e volume de material a ser utilizado no envelope da edificação para o alcance de elevados valores de atraso térmico. ABSTRACT - There are few scientific studies demonstrating the thermal performance of buildings built with ceramic materials, specifically soil-cement material, but also, there is variability in the values of physical and thermal properties of such materials, which, in turn, generate the doubt which reference using the correct planning of buildings to meet the thermal performance required by current regulations. Thus, the research aimed to analyze the thermal behavior of buildings built with soil cement walls and red tile inserted in the Brazilian bioclimatic zone 6 (ZB6) to contribute to the study of the physical and thermal properties of ceramic materials. For such heat transfer calculations were performed by prescriptive method in accordance with NBR 15220 (ABNT 2005) and in situ measurements in buildings built on the ground masonry cement and red ceramic blocks. Subsequently, correlations were made between thermal characteristics and temperature measurements and relative humidity of air inside of the building in order to obtain the same thermal performance. With the results we see that the buildings in vertical envelopes built with soil cement blocks and red ceramics showed similar thermal performance in ZB6; being that for the solo material cement the physical and thermal properties of density 1890 kg / m³, thermal conductivity 0.38 W / (mK) and specific heat 1.30 kJ / (kg.K) are conducive to good thermal performance of this matter raw, however, that these are highlighted potentially should match the shape and volume of material to be used in the building envelope to reach high levels of thermal lag.

    Authors: Maria Mercedes Martinez Okumura;

    Authors: Felipe Nascimento de Araujo;

    Através de uma abordagem da antropologia social, baseada no conceito de lugar antropológico de Marc Augé, este artigo pretende estabelecer uma breve análise de como os coros musicais se relacionam com a ideia de cidadania ateniense que se construiu a partir da tirania até as reformas de Clístenes. Esse contexto histórico caracteriza-se pela instauração da isonomia – governo baseado na igualdade dos cidadãos perante a lei (nómos) – e tem como algumas de suas características principais a participação popular na boulé, nos festivais cívicos e na falange hoplita. A função dos coros musicais como componente de formação da cidadania ateniense teria se dado a partir de sua relação com a falange hoplita e de sua presença nos grandes festivais cívicos que ocorriam desde o período da tirania (560-510 a.C.). Encontramos evidências dessas relações na documentação imagética das cerâmicas áticas, exemplificadas neste artigo pelo skýphos de autoria de Heron

    Authors: Marcos André Torres de Souza;

    Authors: Didoné, Katia Rosa;
