    We present KAF, the KYOTO Annotation Format. KAF is a layered and extendible linguistic annotation format that is specifically developed to arrive at semantic interoperability. KAF is used in seven languages in several applications throughout the KYOTO (Knowledge Yielding Ontologies for Transition-based Organization) project. The goal of these applications is to derive semantic data from linguistically processed text. Separate annotation layers are defined for each annotation process but these can be combined to arrive at a higher level of semantic representation. This paper gives an outline of KAF and a description of how it is applied in the KYOTO project.

    We introduce Relevancer that processes a tweet set and enables generating an automatic classifier from it. Relevancer satisfies information needs of experts during significant events. Enabling experts to combine automatic procedures with expertise is the main contribution of our approach and the added value of the tool. Even a small amount of feedback enables the tool to distinguish between relevant and irrelevant information effectively. Thus, Relevancer facilitates the quick understanding of and proper reaction to events presented on Twitter.

    AbstractWellbeing is predominantly measured through surveys but is increasingly measured by analysing individuals' language on social media platforms using social media text mining (SMTM). To investigate whether the structure of wellbeing is similar across both data collection methods, we compared networks derived from survey items and social media language features collected from the same participants. The dataset was split into an independent exploration (n = 1169) and a final subset (n = 1000). After estimating exploration networks, redundant survey items and language topics were eliminated. Final networks were then estimated using exploratory graph analysis (EGA). The networks of survey items and those from language topics were similar, both consisting of five wellbeing dimensions. The dimensions in the survey‐ and SMTM‐based assessment of wellbeing showed convergent structures congruent with theories of wellbeing. Specific dimensions found in each network reflected the unique aspects of each type of data (survey and social media language). Networks derived from both language features and survey items show similar structures. Survey and SMTM methods may provide complementary methods to understand differences in human wellbeing.

    Value alignment is a crucial aspect of ethical multiagent systems. An important step toward value alignment is identifying values specific to an application context. However, identifying contextspecific values is complex and cognitively demanding. To support this process, we develop a methodology and a collaborative web platform that employs AI techniques. We describe this platform, highlighting its intuitive design and implementation. Interactive Intelligence

    Healthcare systems are under pressure from an aging population, rising costs, and increasingly complex conditions and treatments. Although data are determined to play a bigger role in how doctors diagnose and prescribe treatments, they struggle due to a lack of time and an abundance of structured and unstructured information. To address this challenge, we introduce MediCoSpace, a visual decision-support tool for more efficient doctor-patient consultations. The tool links patient reports to past and present diagnoses, diseases, drugs, and treatments, both for the current patient and other patients in comparable situations. MediCoSpace uses textual medical data, deep-learning supported text analysis and concept spaces to facilitate a visual discovery process. The tool is evaluated by five medical doctors. The results show that MediCoSpace facilitates a promising, yet complex way to discover unlikely relations and thus suggests a path toward the development of interactive visual tools to provide physicians with more holistic diagnoses and personalized, dynamic treatments for patients.     Authors: Seddik Abdelsalam Tawfik Abdelrahman, Noha;

    In recent years, the Precision Medicine paradigm has emerged to compensate for the shortcomings of the traditional 'one-size-fits-all' approach that has dominated the medical practice for so long. It aims at developing more precise and tailored plans for patients starting from screening and diagnosing to treatment and interventions. Turning the Precision Medicine dream into a clinical reality requires the integration of different sources of data such as scientific literature, electronic health records, and structured databases through the means of Text Mining, Information Extraction, and Machine learning. This dissertation investigates, in specific, the role of Biomedical Natural Language Processing in the Precision Medicine revolution. The potential benefit of extracting valuable information from existing unstructured data improves the understanding of the field and contributes to better health care. This research focuses on two main aspects: proving the efficacy of Precision Medicine and advancing its integration into practice. To explore both aspects, this dissertation employs and extends methods and techniques such as automatic curation, ontology reuse ,and natural language inference.

    Various techniques for learning meronymy relationships from open-domain corpora exist. However, extracting meronymy relationships from domain-specific, textual corporate databases has been overlooked, despite numerous application opportunities particularly in domains like product development and/or customer service. These domains also pose new scientific challenges, such as the absence of elaborate knowledge resources, compromising the performance of supervised meronymy-learning algorithms. Furthermore, the domain-specific terminology of corporate texts makes it difficult to select appropriate seeds for minimally-supervised meronymy-learning algorithms. To address these issues, we develop and present a principled approach to extract accurate meronymy relationships from textual databases of product development and/or customer service organizations by leveraging on reliable meronymy lexico-syntactic patterns harvested from an open-domain corpus. Evaluations on real-life corporate databases indicate that our technique extracts precise meronymy relationships that provide valuable operational insights on causes of product failures and customer dissatisfaction. Our results also reveal that the types of some of the domain-specific meronymy relationships, extracted from the corporate data, cannot be conclusively and unambiguously classified under well-known taxonomies of relationships.

    The key arguments underlying a large and noisy set of opinions help understand the opinions quickly and accurately. Fully automated methods can extract arguments but (1) require large labeled datasets and (2) work well for known viewpoints, but not for novel points of view. We propose HyEnA, a hybrid (human + AI) method for extracting arguments from opinionated texts, combining the speed of automated processing with the understanding and reasoning capabilities of humans. We evaluate HyEnA on three feedback corpora. We find that, on the one hand, HyEnA achieves higher coverage and precision than a state-of-the-art automated method, when compared on a common set of diverse opinions, justifying the need for human insight. On the other hand, HyEnA requires less human effort and does not compromise quality compared to (fully manual) expert analysis, demonstrating the benefit of combining human and machine intelligence. Past work in natural language processing interpretability focused mainly on popular classification tasks while largely overlooking generation settings, partly due to a lack of dedicated tools. In this work, we introduce Inseq, a Python library to democratize access to interpretability analyses of sequence generation models. Inseq enables intuitive and optimized extraction of models' internal information and feature importance scores for popular decoder-only and encoder-decoder Transformers architectures. We showcase its potential by adopting it to highlight gender biases in machine translation models and locate factual knowledge inside GPT-2. Thanks to its extensible interface supporting cutting-edge techniques such as contrastive feature attribution, Inseq can drive future advances in explainable natural language generation, centralizing good practices and enabling fair and reproducible model evaluations.

    This topic of this thesis is parallel parsing using context-free grammars and attribute grammars. The first parts concentrates on slow and fast parallelism of the parsing and recognition process using double dotted items. The second part describe the maximum derivation length of acyclic grammars, the decoration of parses, and a raking algorithm on binary DAGs. Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science
