    In the first part of the study titled as ``Mosaic Art, Pictorial Analyses of Antioch and Zeugma Mosaics?? in addition to the definition of mosaic concept, construction and the materials and the techniques used in the construction, mosaic types and the characteristics are examined as subtopics.In the second part of the study, under the main heading titled as ``Mosaic in Historical Process??, Mosaic in the era of Hellenism, Roman Mosaics, Byzantine Mosaics and Contemporary Mosaics are examined in different topics and so the first two chapters are expected to shed light to the next ones.In the third part, pictorial analysis of Antioch and Zeugma Mosaics was made as subject, color, pattern, and composition. Five of the Antioch Mosaics and six of the Zeugma Mosaics were selected in order to be examined. ?Mozaik Sanatı, Antakya ve Zeugma Mozaiklerinin Resim Analizleri? başlıklı bu çalışmanın birinci bölümünde mozaik kavramının tanımı, yapımı ve yapımında kullanılan malzeme ve tekniklere ek olarak mozaik çeşitleri ve özellikleri alt başlıklar şeklinde incelenmiştir.Çalışmanın ikinci bölümünde ise ?Tarihsel Süreçte Mozaik? ana başlığı altında, Helenizm devrinde mozaik, Roma mozaikleri, Bizans mozaikleri ve günümüz mozaikleri ayrı başlıklar halinde incelenerek ilk iki bölümün daha sonraki bölümlere ışık tutması beklenmiştir.Üçüncü bölümde Antakya ve Zeugma Mozaiklerinin konu, renk, desen ve kompozisyon olarak resimsel dil incelenmesi yapılmıştır. İncelenmek üzere Antakya Mozaiklerinden beş, Zeugma Mozaiklerinden altı adet mozaik seçilmiştir. 108

    Authors: Ling, Roger;

    One of the more attractive features of mosaic pavements in Roman Britain - as indeed in other parts of the Roman Empire - is the profusion of animals that inhabit the various fields. In her excellent new monograph, Patricia Witts reviews and analyses all known specimens of this “mosaic menagerie”. Her agenda is made clear from the start. “Seemingly overlooked as a subject of serious study, these appealing creatures were more than mere decoration or a convenient way of filling space. They are usually chosen with care and offer insights into the overall iconography of the pavements in which they appear.” I would argue for a more flexible position: sometimes the fauna were highly meaningful (as in pavements showing beasts parading around Orpheus), sometimes they were more generally relevant (as in the marine fauna of mosaics in bath-suites), sometimes they were stock fillers chosen from adecorative repertoire. But this is a matter of opinion, and Witts presents her case persuasively and with exemplary thoroughness.

    Authors: Gucek, Nikolina;

    The main topic of this paper is the study of mosaics from Antique period on the Salona area. Thanks to the fact that Salona was the capital city of province, Salona was also the center of the activities in the mosaics workshops. Mosaic art is very widespread and popular painting technique from Antique period, and it reaches itʾs full development in Greece, Rome and Byzantine. Mosaic impersonate some sort of story or an event, and preserved floor mosaics in the Salona were actually representing the basics on which late Roman and early Christian art has developed. Floor mosaics are characterised by ornaments with floral motives. The main characteristics and the importance of the mosaics from the Antique period are presented in this paper. The following mosaics are presented: the figurative mosaics with Orpheusʾs portrait, the figurative mosaics with Apolloʾs portrait, the figurative mosaics with Tius Aureliusʾs portrait and the figurative mosaics with Muses and Sapphoʾs portrait, all of them also include a catalogue representation in the paperʾs attachment. Tematika ovog rada je proučavanje mozaika antičkog razdoblja na području Salone. Zahvaljujući činjenici da je bila glavni grad provincije, Salona je bila i centar aktivnosti mozaičke škole-radionice. Mozaik je vrlo raširena i omiljena slikarska tehnika u antičkom svijetu te svoj puni razvoj dostiže u Grčkoj, Rimu i Bizantu. Mozaici su prikazivali određenu priču ili događaj, a sačuvani podni mozaici u Saloni zapravo su predstavljali osnovu na kojoj se razvila kasnoantička i ranokršćanska umjetnost. Podne mozaike najčešće karakterizira ornamentika sa dosta biljnih motiva. U ovom radu su prikazane glavne karakteristike i značaj mozaika antičkog razdoblja. Prikazani su mozaici: Figurativni mozaik s prikazom Orfeja, figurativni mozaik s prikazom Apolona, figurativni mozaik s prikazom Tritona, mozaik s likom dječaka Tita Aurelija Aurelijana te figurativni mozaik s prikazom Muza i pjesnikinje Sapfo, koji su obrađeni i kataloški u prilogu ovog rada.

    Kariye Museum (Church of Chora Monastery), Ayasofya Museum (Hagia Sophia Museum), Zeyrek Mosque (Pantocrator Monastery Church), Fenari İsa Mosque (Constantine Lips Monastery), Fethiye Museum (Pammakaristos Church), Aya İrini Mosque (Hagia Irene Church) and Great Palace Mosaic Museum are among the prominent architectural structures of Byzantine period. In this study, as examples of Byzantine mosaic art, the remarkable mosaic works these museums present are examined. Analyzing the mosaic works with respect to their historical, socio-cultural, technical and artistic aspects by applying to the history and architectural structure of the Kariye Museum constitutes the main content of the study.In the above mentioned Byzantine architectural structures, an ancient mosaic technique called Opus Vermiculatum is widely used. The art project that supports the dissertation aims at adapting this ancient technique to the present by using contemporary materials.The art project entitled ?Evren I ve Evren II? consists of two original abstract compositions that involve geometrical forms symbolizing the universe. In the design of these geometrical forms, artistic criteria of balance, rhythm, color, volume and light are considered and a graphical language is used.Both by interpreting the Byzantine mosaics, the subject of the thesis and by the mosaic technique applied in the project, the art works in past and present mosaic art are analyzed and a synthesis between past and present is achieved. Kariye Müzesi (Chora Manastırı Kilisesi), Ayasofya Müzesi (Hagia Sophia Museum), Zeyrek Cami (Pantokrator Manastırı Kilisesi), Feneri İsa Cami (Konstantin Lips Manastırı), Fethiye Müzesi (Pammakaristos Manastırı), Aya İrini Kilisesi (Hagia Irene Church) ve Büyük Saray Mozaikleri Müzesi Bizans döneminin İstanbul'daki başlıca mimari yapıları arasındadır. Bu çalışmada, bu müzelerde bulunan ve Bizans dönemi mozaik sanatının dikkat çekici örnekleri olan mozaik eserler incelenmiştir. Kariye Müzesinin tarihçesi ve mimarisine başvurularak bu mozaik eserlerin, tarihsel, sosyo-kültürel, teknik ve artistik açıdan analizlerinin yapılması tezin genel içeriğini oluşturmaktadır.Yukarıda bahsedilen Bizans dönemi mimari yapılarında, genel olarak, bir antik dönem mozaik tekniği olan Opus Vermiculatum tekniği kullanılmıştır. Tezi destekleyen proje uygulaması ise, bu tekniği çağdaş malzemelerle günümüze uyarlamayı amaçlamıştır.Uygulama projesi, evreni simgeleyen geometrik formların yer aldığı ?Evren I ve Evren II? adlı soyut özgün iki kompozisyondan oluşmaktadır. Kompozisyonu meydana getiren geometrik formların oluşturulmasında denge, ritim, renk, hacim ve ışık gibi temel sanatsal ölçütlere dikkat edilmiş ve grafiksel bir anlatım dili kullanılmıştır.Gerek tez çalışmasının konusunu olan Bizans dönemi mozaiklerinin yorumlanmasıyla ve gerekse projede uygulanan mozaik tekniği ile geçmiş ve günümüz mozaik sanatındaki çalışmalar irdelenerek bir sentez oluşturulmuştur. 161

    Corpus of the Roman Mosaics of the Conuentus Bracaraugustanus (Coordinated by Fátima Abraços), 276 pages, 143 colour and black and white figures, with illustrative descriptions, a synoptic chart, 4 maps, bibliography, Lisbon: Centre for Historical Studies - Universidade NOVA de Lisboa, 2019, ISBN 978-989-5430413. The text published here largely follows the presentation that I did when the book was launched on 26th June 2019, in the Auditorium of the National Library of Portugal. It was with great honour and pleasure that I accepted the task of presenting the book Corpus of the Roman Mosaics of the Conuentus Bracaraugustanus, with the coordination and authorship of Fátima Abraços. The preparation of the book also had the helpful collaboration of António Manuel de Carvalho Lima, Cátia Mourão, Filomena Limão, Licínia Wrench, Marcelo Mendes Pinto, Paulo Dórdio Gomes and Rui Lopes. I began by reading the Preface written by Professor Manuel Justino Maciel, pages 9 and 10 of this Corpus: “Whether or not mosaics are very significant in the lands of north-western Atlantic Hispania, whether or not there are more mosaics in the cities or in the uillae, the book, now published, will mark a step forward in addressing this interesting question.     Authors: Şirin, Mahir;

    Mozaik, çok eski çağlardan beri iç mekânların bezenmesinde sevilerek kullanılan bir sanat tekniği olmuştur. M.Ö. IV. binlerde ilk örneklerine rastlanılan mozaik sanatı, zaman içinde teknik ve estetik önden çok ilerlemiştir. Özellikle Helenistik çağda yaşanan teknik yeniliklerin ardından Roma döneminde bol miktarda kaliteli ve göz alıcı mozaik eserler yaratılmıştır. Çok odalı Roma villalarının - başta triclinium olmak üzere oda zeminlerinin çok renkli, geometrik ve figürlü mozaik eserlerle tezyin edilmesi sevilen bir gelenek haline gelmiştir. Figürlü mozaik eserler, genellikle av sahneleri, doğa betimleri ve mitolojik öyküleri konu edinmiştir.Roma döneminde, Antakya ve Zeugma, Roma ve İskenderiye kadar kalabalık ve kültürel merkez sayılmakta idi. Felsefe ve teolojinin şekline yön veren merkezlerin başında olan Antakya'da mozaik Romalı vatandaşların hayatında mimari ve heykel kadar önemli bir yer almıştı.Mitolojik hikâyelerin anlatıldığı emblematalar genellikle geometrik bitkisel ve hayvan figürleri ile çerçevelenmiştir. Figürlerde ve objelerde kullanılan modülasyon yöntemi renk konusundaki vritiöziteyi gözler önüne sermektedir. XIX. y.y'la kadar ressamlar renk konusunda bu kadar spontane davranamamıştır. Romalı sanatçı elindeki doğal ve yapay tesseraları yan yana dizerek günümüzde kullanılan teknolojik mediumların efekt gücüne ulaşmayı bilmiştir.Başta Antakya ve Zeugma olmak üzere bu çalışmada Anadolu'da mozaik sanatı ikonografik ve tarihsel verilerin ışığında estetik kaygılar ve biçimsel öğeler değerlendirilerek hazırlanmıştır.Anahtar Kelimeler: Triclinium, Mitoloji, Emblemata, Vritiözite, Tessera, Modülasyon, İkonografi Mosaics is a beloved technique of arts that has been used to adorn indoors for ancient ages. It has been improved by technical and aesthetical aspects since its first appearance 40th century BC. Especially after the technical improvements of Hellenistc Period, there have been many high quality and eye catching mosaic works created in the Roman era. Geometrical and figure based ornamentation of the grounds of multi roomed Roman villas, such as triclinium, has been a widely beloved tradition. Mosaic works have been usually created with hunt scenes, nature portraits and mythological stories.At Roman times, Antakya and Zeugma were known as crowded and important centres of culture as Rome and Alexandria. Mosaics in Antakya, which was one of the heading centers of directing the concepts of philosophy and theology, has taken part in Roman life as much as architecture and sculpture.Emblematas which consisting mythological stories are framed with geometrical plant and animal figures. The modulation method that has been used on figures and objects shows the virtuosity on colours. The painters haven't been acting that spontaneous about the colours until the XIXth century. The Roman artist, by just aligning the natural and artificial tesseras the he has, was able to achieve the effect power of nowadays technological media.This work was prepared using the Anatolian mosaic arts at especially in Antakya and Zeugma, in light of iconographical and historical data, aesthetical concerns and by evaluation of stylistic elements.Keywords: 1)Triclinium 2)Mythology 3)Emblemata 4)Virtuosity 5)Tessera 6)Modulation 7)Iconography 75

  • Authors: Jean Semal;

    As a plant virologist, I have long been interested in tissue culture. Indeed, as early as 1949, Limasset and Cornuet had noticed that raeristems of tobacco mosaic virus-infected tobacco were devoid of virus, while Morel and Martin (1952) succeeded in curing dahlias infected with dahlia mosaic virus through the in vitro culture of meristems.

    Authors: Şahin, Mehmet;

    Authors: Ling, Roger;

    Authors: Gucek, Nikolina;

The text published here largely follows the presentation that I did when the book was launched on 26th June 2019, in the Auditorium of the National Library of Portugal. It was with great honour and pleasure that I accepted the task of presenting the book Corpus of the Roman Mosaics of the Conuentus Bracaraugustanus, with the coordination and authorship of Fátima Abraços. The preparation of the book also had the helpful collaboration of António Manuel de Carvalho Lima, Cátia Mourão, Filomena Limão, Licínia Wrench, Marcelo Mendes Pinto, Paulo Dórdio Gomes and Rui Lopes. I began by reading the Preface written by Professor Manuel Justino Maciel, pages 9 and 10 of this Corpus: “Whether or not mosaics are very significant in the lands of north-western Atlantic Hispania, whether or not there are more mosaics in the cities or in the uillae, the book, now published, will mark a step forward in addressing this interesting question. Anahtar Kelimeler: Triclinium, Mitoloji, Emblemata, Vritiözite, Tessera, Modülasyon, İkonografi Mosaics is a beloved technique of arts that has been used to adorn indoors for ancient ages.
