Chapter 2 presents the history of the archaeological discoveries and excavations at Gesher Benot Yaʻaqov, from as early as the 1930s to very recently. Throughout these years, the area of the site was subjected to recurrent activities of construction, destruction, and drainage. The chapter provides a detailed account of the history of research on Gesher Benot Yaʻaqov and the Benot Yaʻakov Formation by scholars such as D. Garrod, M. Stekelis, and D. Gilead. Furthermore, as this volume is dedicated to the lithic assemblages originating from recent (1989 onwards) archaeological excavations at the site, an account of this phase of archaeological research is provided, as well as a summary of the main scientific achievements derived from it.

Abstract Here we present the results of a micromorphological study conducted on the recently excavated layers in a tholos tomb - Tholos Beta - at the Minoan site at Koumasa, Crete, during the 2013–2014 excavation seasons. This was also a unique opportunity to conduct a detailed research on in situ unexcavated archaeological layers in a Minoan tholos tomb, applying new and innovative sampling methods in order to enable such research in remote locations. This is the first time a micromorphological study has ever been conducted at a Minoan tholos tomb. The micromorphological analysis of the archaeological layers demonstrates that a single and massive burning event of hundreds of disturbed burials took place throughout the structure. This was followed by sprinkling of burnt lime on top of the burnt bone layer. Later cycles of similar burning events are also implied. These results have significant implications on our understanding of Early Minoan mortuary practices and symbolic world.

  • The objective of recording the excavated shipwreck is to provide a basis for reconstructing the ship from the archaeological findings. This article describes two projects, carried out between 1985 and 2009, that demonstrate shallow-water excavation methods and the treatment of shipwrecks, employed in Ma'agan Mikhael ship and the shipwrecks in Dor lagoon. The process of excavating, documenting, analyzing, and reconstructing the original form and construction of a shipwreck is different in each case, although the general principles are common. Proper archaeology—delicate excavation, recording, measuring, and photographing—becomes tricky and complicated and must be done fast, professionally, and efficiently. The shipwreck provides details about construction, trading route, place of wreck, and the cargo gives information on trading of the period.

Following a report that a tractor disturbed a subterranean hiding complex at Enot Shoim, a survey and archaeological excavation were conducted at the site for several days. This article introduces the site and furnishes new information about subterranean hiding complexes in the Galilee.

Study of its abundant datable finds showed that it had probably been sealed since the 2nd or 3rd century CE. This article introduces the site and furnishes new information about subterranean hiding complexes in the Galilee.
