    Against the current trend in favour of the so-called disruptive nature of the “digital humanities,” this dossier focuses on the way past and present specialists of sociohistorical studies on print and literature have designed and used databases. Working with databases responds to crucial challenges, both technical and scientific, about producing evidence or defining the subject and issue of a research. By shedding light on what happens behind the scenes when databases are mobilised, this second thematic dossier of Biens symboliques / Symbolic Goods explores how digital data have become essential in many studies, and have therefore allowed us to survey literary life (in terms of both measuring and re-evaluating it) in different periods. In this perspective, three lines of questioning are proposed in this introduction: how databases are designed; how they are used; and how they are stored.

    The present paper is based on the assumption that the language of the novel is characterized by a statistically relevant overrepresentation of certain linguistic units (e.g. lexemes, key words, collocations and colligations, Siepmann 2015). First steps towards checking the validity of this hypothesis had been undertaken in pioneering works in the 1990s/2000s (e.g. Stubbs & Barth 2003). These studies were however limited by the small size of their (exclusively English) corpora. The present study explores the role of some patterns (phraseological motifs) in distinguishing French literary subgenres. It also proposes a case study of some motifs related to the verbal (dire avec sourire ‘to say with a smile’) and non-verbal communication (adresser un sourire ‘to send a smile’). Unlike traditional corpus-stylistic analyses, which frequently focus on the style of a single author, our corpus-driven approach identifies lexico-syntactic constructions in literary genres which are automatically extracted from the corpora.The main purpose is to show the relevance of the notion of phraseological motif (Legallois 2012; Longrée & Mellet 2013; Novakova & Siepmann 2020) for the distinction of literary subgenres. Linking form and meaning, these ‘multidimensional units’ fulfil pragmatic as well as discursive functions.The data has been extracted from large French corpora of the PhraseoRom research project https://phraseorom.univ-grenoble-alpes.fr. They are accessible on http://phraseotext.univ-grenoble-alpes.fr/phraseobase/index.html and contain 1000 novels (published from the 1950s to the present), partitioned into six sub-corpora: general literature (GEN), crime fiction (CRIM), romances (ROM), historical novels (HIST), science fiction (SF) and fantasy (FY).The results of our study reveal some unexpected differences between the literary subgenres: e.g. the motif dire d’une voix ‘to say in a voice’ in HIST compared to GEN. In FY, expressions of verbal communication are related to shouting and screaming. Expressions related to the non-verbal communication (prendre dans ses bras ‘to take in one’s arms’) are specific to ROM, where body language is overrepresented. In SF, there is a very limited number of these types of expressions. More generally, the motifs provide the link between the micro level (phraseological recurrences) and the macro level (the fictional script).

    La solution décrite dans cette contribution permet de combiner exigences académiques et difficultés pratiques : un outil de gestion de fichiers qui permet de gérer des fichiers d’autorité, d’en visualiser les données comme de s’assurer de leur interopérabilité, sans pour autant nécessiter une formation ardue et tout en s’adaptant à des corpus et des projets variés. Les fichiers d’autorité ont été balisés en XML en suivant le format EAC-CPF (Encoded Archival Context – Corporate Bodies, Persons and Families) ; la visualisation des données est gérée par le système de gestion de contenus (CMS) Omeka. Le corpus d’autorité est basé sur les officiers et jurisconsultes cités dans le Livre de jostice et de plet, compilation juridique rédigée en ancien français au xiiie siècle et récemment éditée en ligne sur Élec (Éditions en ligne de l’École des chartes). The solution described is the result of a combination of research and practical experience : a file management tool for authority files, with publishing and interoperable capabilities that can be handled without a steep learning curve, and that can adapt themselves to variation or different cases. The authority records were delineated in XML markup following EAC-CPF (Encoded Archival Context—Corporate Bodies, Persons and Families) convention ; the dataflow was managed by the Omeka Content Management System. The corpus of authority files is based on officials and jurisconsults cited in the Livre de jostice et de plet, a legal compilation written in Old French around 1260, recently edited online on Élec (Éditions en ligne de l’École des chartes).

    This article explores the set of interlocking and overlapping institutional, pedagogical, and commercial developments that led to the critical editing of James Joyce's Ulysses by Hans Walter Gabler in the late 1970s and early 1980s. While the polarised reception of Ulysses: A Critical and Synoptic Edition in the late 1980s is well known, we reconstruct the material and technological conditions of digital scholarly editing that gave rise to this major edition of a canonical modernist work.

    International audience; This editorial introduces a special issue of Open Theology dedicated to digital humanities (DH) belongs to, and in many ways represents, a new step in the digital development of biblical studies and theology-the start of a general diffusion of digital research, digital tools, and digital culture in theology. This new step has come to the fore through the recent publication of books like Networked Theology (Campbell and Garner 2016) and Creating Church Online (Hutchings 2017), and also by the creation of the first research centre focused on Christian digital theology in 2014, the CODEC centre in Durham, UK, presented in the first article of this issue.

    This paper considers transforming forms and their purposes in the popular culture trope of the televised Monster of the Week (MOTW). In the rare televised appearances outside of Slavic nations, Baba Yaga tends to show up in MOTW episodes. While some MOTW are contemporary inventions, many, like Baba Yaga, are mythological and fantastic creatures from folk narratives. Employing the concept of the folkloresque, we explore how contemporary audiovisual tropes gain integrity and traction by indexing traditional knowledge and belief systems. In the process, we examine key affordances of these forms involving the possibilities of wonder and the portability of tradition. Using digital humanities methods, we built a “monster typology” by scraping lists of folk creatures, mythological beasts, and other supernatural beings from online information sources, and we used topic modeling to investigate central concerns of MOTW series. Our findings indicate connections in these shows between crime, violence, family, and loss. The trope formulates wonder and families through folk narrative and monster forms and functions. We recognize Baba Yaga’s role as villain in these episodes and acknowledge that these series also shift between episodic and serial narrative arcs involving close relationships between characters and among viewers and fans.

    A global issue : food system, environmental protection, and human rights. However, there is no general answer yet, from a legal point of view. This topic is hardly dealt by States. Moving from food crisis to food sovereignty is a major scope; but this goal is still far from being achieved currently. Even so, food safety has become a main topic of commercial speech of companies. Some of them have pointed their general speech toward corporate and social responsibility (hereafter CSR). That is the problem : is food safety the responsibility of private actors ? Is it a way forward on this issue as decisive as complex ? These questions reveal the ambivalence of private actors. Those can provide interesting initiatives and we cannot deny it. But we remain skeptic. Most companies maintain a shareholder conception about profit and profitability. So, private wealth is rarely redistributed from the perspective of improving food safety. Firstly, this article aims to observe practices of banking and commercial companies. Secondly, it assesses the effectiveness of corporate and social responsibility. This observation raises some critics. We consider that private initiative must remain a support of state intervention. In all cases, it reveals the need for a legal regulation of food safety.

    The analysis of land management, lineage and family through the case study of early modern Spanish nobility from sixteenth to early nineteenth century is a major issue in recent historiography. It aims to shed light on how upper social classes arranged strategies to maintain their political and economic status. Rivalry and disputes between old factions and families were attached to the control and exercise of power. Blood, land management and honour were the main elements in these disputes. Honour, service to the Crown, participation in the conquest and "pure" blood (Catholic affiliation) were the main features of Spanish nobility. This book analyses the origins of the entailed-estate (mayorazgo) from medieval times to early modern period, as the main element that enables us to understand the socio-economic behaviour of these families over generations. This longue durée chronology within the Braudelian methodology of the research aims to show how strategies and family networks changed over time, demonstrating a micro-history study of daily life.     International audience; In the second half of the nineteenth century, the French mathematician Charles Hermite wrote thousands of letters to dozens of correspondents. Mixing personal, political, academic and mathematical matters, as well as views on mathematics and its development, these letters offer a vivid picture of the mathematical landscape of the time. Particularly interesting is the fact that many themes appear repetitively among several correspondents, while some others, contrastingly, are specific to only one. Such echoes and contradictions are, of course, evocative, but also constitute a challenge to a potential editor: neither strict chronology nor restriction to one correspondent allow us to take them into account. We discuss here these problems and some solutions, while focussing on the exchanges between Hermite and the German mathematician Rudolf Lipschitz.

    Against the current trend in favour of the so-called disruptive nature of the “digital humanities,” this dossier focuses on the way past and present specialists of sociohistorical studies on print and literature have designed and used databases. Working with databases responds to crucial challenges, both technical and scientific, about producing evidence or defining the subject and issue of a research. By shedding light on what happens behind the scenes when databases are mobilised, this second thematic dossier of Biens symboliques / Symbolic Goods explores how digital data have become essential in many studies, and have therefore allowed us to survey literary life (in terms of both measuring and re-evaluating it) in different periods. In this perspective, three lines of questioning are proposed in this introduction: how databases are designed; how they are used; and how they are stored.

    The present paper is based on the assumption that the language of the novel is characterized by a statistically relevant overrepresentation of certain linguistic units (e.g. lexemes, key words, collocations and colligations, Siepmann 2015). First steps towards checking the validity of this hypothesis had been undertaken in pioneering works in the 1990s/2000s (e.g. Stubbs & Barth 2003). These studies were however limited by the small size of their (exclusively English) corpora. The present study explores the role of some patterns (phraseological motifs) in distinguishing French literary subgenres. It also proposes a case study of some motifs related to the verbal (dire avec sourire ‘to say with a smile’) and non-verbal communication (adresser un sourire ‘to send a smile’). Unlike traditional corpus-stylistic analyses, which frequently focus on the style of a single author, our corpus-driven approach identifies lexico-syntactic constructions in literary genres which are automatically extracted from the corpora.The main purpose is to show the relevance of the notion of phraseological motif (Legallois 2012; Longrée & Mellet 2013; Novakova & Siepmann 2020) for the distinction of literary subgenres. Linking form and meaning, these ‘multidimensional units’ fulfil pragmatic as well as discursive functions.The data has been extracted from large French corpora of the PhraseoRom research project https://phraseorom.univ-grenoble-alpes.fr. They are accessible on http://phraseotext.univ-grenoble-alpes.fr/phraseobase/index.html and contain 1000 novels (published from the 1950s to the present), partitioned into six sub-corpora: general literature (GEN), crime fiction (CRIM), romances (ROM), historical novels (HIST), science fiction (SF) and fantasy (FY).The results of our study reveal some unexpected differences between the literary subgenres: e.g. the motif dire d’une voix ‘to say in a voice’ in HIST compared to GEN. In FY, expressions of verbal communication are related to shouting and screaming. Expressions related to the non-verbal communication (prendre dans ses bras ‘to take in one’s arms’) are specific to ROM, where body language is overrepresented. In SF, there is a very limited number of these types of expressions. More generally, the motifs provide the link between the micro level (phraseological recurrences) and the macro level (the fictional script).

    La solution décrite dans cette contribution permet de combiner exigences académiques et difficultés pratiques : un outil de gestion de fichiers qui permet de gérer des fichiers d’autorité, d’en visualiser les données comme de s’assurer de leur interopérabilité, sans pour autant nécessiter une formation ardue et tout en s’adaptant à des corpus et des projets variés. Les fichiers d’autorité ont été balisés en XML en suivant le format EAC-CPF (Encoded Archival Context – Corporate Bodies, Persons and Families) ; la visualisation des données est gérée par le système de gestion de contenus (CMS) Omeka. Le corpus d’autorité est basé sur les officiers et jurisconsultes cités dans le Livre de jostice et de plet, compilation juridique rédigée en ancien français au xiiie siècle et récemment éditée en ligne sur Élec (Éditions en ligne de l’École des chartes). The solution described is the result of a combination of research and practical experience : a file management tool for authority files, with publishing and interoperable capabilities that can be handled without a steep learning curve, and that can adapt themselves to variation or different cases. The authority records were delineated in XML markup following EAC-CPF (Encoded Archival Context—Corporate Bodies, Persons and Families) convention ; the dataflow was managed by the Omeka Content Management System. The corpus of authority files is based on officials and jurisconsults cited in the Livre de jostice et de plet, a legal compilation written in Old French around 1260, recently edited online on Élec (Éditions en ligne de l’École des chartes).
