    International audience; As with geography, ceramic decorations are essentially spatial organisations of features. Therefore, they should be analysed with spatial indexes. But spatial analyses, at the shard or the complete ceramic scale, are often difficult to set up, mostly because of the contiguity of graphical features.This paper presents a new method to record and analyse ceramic decoration. We use graph theory, with a GIS interface and Python programming, to analyse ceramic decoration in a bottom-up process. A priori definitions are minimal and only concern elementary units (morphological, graphical and plastic) which compose the ceramic.The studied corpus is composed of ceramic decorations belonging to the Mailhac I facies (Late Bronze Age), characterised by complex figurative compositions. Each decoration — complete or fragmented — is considered as a spatialized network (i.e. geometric graph). Graph theory provides tools to record and measure proximities between units and normalised indexes to compare different decorations, whatever their completeness. The GIS offers a graphic interface and ensures the correctness of spatial relationships between these units. The typology of these units is realised in a hierarchical oriented graph. This structure allows processes of generalisation (going up the tree) and specification (going down the tree), permitting comparison between units with different kinds of resolution and/or complexity. The method presented here can be used for other types of mediums(statuary, rock art, etc.).

The proposed papers approach the relations between textual contents, material characteristics of writing, supports and contexts via questions of visibility, legibility, and function of inscriptions.

    Cet article est consacré à un type de décor, thème principal du colloque « Imiter le textile en polychromie à la fin du moyen âge. Le cas du « brocart appliqué » : enjeux interdisciplinaires ». Cette contribution aborde également d’autres procédés d’imitation ou de décor des textiles tels que les reliefs à l’étain, le sgrafitto… rencontrés aussi en peinture et sculpture au Moyen Âge. Un aperçu de ces techniques de décors d’imitation ou d’enrichissement des textiles est dressé, la méthodologie de leur étude scientifique, croisant examens et analyses, décrit leurs caractéristiques matérielles et techniques, leur état de conservation, les moyens d’investigation de leurs restes souvent extrêmement lacunaires. This paper is devoted to applied brocade, subject of the colloquium published here, and to others techniques of textile imitation such tin reliefs, sgraffito … encountred in painting and sculpture in the Middle Ages. An abstract of theses techniques is presented, and the methodology observed crossing observations and analysis describe the techniques and material features, the state of conservation, and the way to investigate the fragments often very lacunars. The Data providing from 55 sculptures have been compiled and confronted. They are dating from XIVth Century to XVIth Century, a very important period for the use of these ornaments ; they come from France, Germany, and Flanders. Cases Studies illustrate the techniques used in this corpus, studied at C2RMF by about thirty years.

    The lack of thorough studies of the significant number of examples of applied brocade found in the last two decades in Spain, originated in 2009 a European PhD thesis with Honours. This investigation presents an analysis and classification of the patterns, making procedures and combinations of materials of the applied brocades of the wooden altarpieces of the Basque province of Gipuzkoa, Northern Spain. Further studies have focused on the use of other analytical techniques that have completed the previous results and more recently, are being examined patterns of applied brocades belonging to the altarpieces sited in the other two provinces of the Basque Country. L’absence d’études approfondies relatives au nombre important d’exemples de brocarts appliqué trouvés au cours des deux dernières décennies en Espagne, a été mise en évidence en 2009 dans une thèse de doctorat européen, obtenue avec distinction. Cette enquête présente une analyse et une classification des modèles, des procédures et des combinaisons de matériaux utilisées dans les brocarts appliqués des retables en bois de la province basque de Gipuzkoa, dans le nord de l’Espagne. Des études ultérieures ont porté sur l’utilisation d’autres techniques d’analyse lesquelles ont complété les résultats précédents et, plus récemment, sont en cours d’examen des modèles de brocarts appliqués présents dans les retables de deux autres provinces du Pays Basque.
