The article presents the coin finds discovered in 2014 and in early 2015. One of the most important discoveries of 2014 is a hoard of drachmas from Histria found somewhere in the left bank of the Dniester River. The author cites data on 26 coins from the hoard. This finding is dated the middle of the 3rd century. There are presented several Roman coins issued by Marcus Aurelius (161-180), Elagabalus (218-222), and Philip the Arab, which were found at different times in and around the village of Sauca, Ocniţa District. During the spring field work in the village of Gârbovăţ (Anenii Noi District) there was found a siliqua issued by Constantius II, which was minted at Antioch and dates back to the period of time between September 9, 337 and the end of 347. This coin is a rarity, at least for Moldova. There are several findings dating to the Middle Ages, including five Moldavian coins of Alexander the Good (groschen and half groschen) and Stephen IV as well as a Polish shilling of John II Casimir, which were discovered near the village of Rădenii Vechi, Ungheni District; coin finds in the area of the Soroca fortress in 2014 and in the spring of 2015; coins found in the village of Ciuteşti, Nisporeni District, etc. Among the finds from the village Opriseni, Chernivtsi region (Ukraine) there is mentioned a groschen of Peter I Muşat (1375-1391) minted after 1386/1387.

This article discusses the coin segments – weights recently found on the territory of the Kherson Region of Ukraine. The weights are trapezoidal in shape and made from Olbia bronze coins of the 4th-3rd centuries BC. There are also considered previously published similar objects originating from the settlements of the chora of Olbia. All of them belong to the Classical and Hellenistic periods. The trapezoidal shape of the weights is characteristic of the Greek population of the Lower Bug Region since archaic times. These home-made segments could easily replace the official weights on the outlying villages of the polis and in its near border area, as well as be used as small and medium weight units in addition to standard, larger weights.

The author continues to record monetary findings on the territory of the Republic of Moldova. The current edition introduces the coins acquired in the second half of 2012 and the first half of 2013. The earliest of these is a Greek issue of „Larissa" found in the village of Talmaza, Ştefan Vodă District. This is the second coin of this kind discovered on the territory of Moldova. There are presented three hoards of the Roman era, one of them with the place of discovery. There are given the new places of discovery of coins belonging to the medieval period: the villages of Balinţi (Soroca District), Marinici (Călăraşi District), and Soloneţ (Soroca District).

The author presents the finds of coins in the historical territory of Moldova, which were recorded during 2013 - the first half of 2014. There were examined three ancient coins and one Byzantine coin found in the Ocniţa District. They were minted under the emperors Septimius Severus (193-211), Maximianus Herculius (286-305) and Decentius (350-353). The Byzantine coin is class A2 anonymous follis issued during the reign of Basil II, Constantine VIII and Roman III (976(?)-030/1035). There are presented findings of medieval coins from Bolohani, Orhei, Brătuleni (Nisporeni District), Hincăuţi, Edineţ, Lăpuşna, Hânceşti, Oprişeni (Glyboka District, Chernivtsi region of Ukraine), Zguriţa (Ocniţa District) etc. All of them will complete the list of coin finds from Moldova and provide researchers new documentary sources.

This article explores numismatic materials relating to the Hephtalits, who lived on the territory of Central Asia and neighboring territories in the 4th-6th centuries AD. This nation managed in the 5th-6th centuries AD to establish its dominance on a fairly wide area. At the peak of its power, the boundaries of the Hephtalite state stretched from east to west, from Khotan (East Turkestan) to the borders of Iran, and from north to south, from the steppes of present-day Kazakhstan to the north-western India. The empire stretched on a large area in Central Asia, Afghanistan, Pakistan, parts of India and China (a number of oases of Eastern Turkestan). The period of the 4th-6th centuries BC in the history of Central Asia is poorly known. This is explained by the very scarce and fragmentary data of written sources about this period. This analysis does not give us a full picture. Archaeological materials are also very limited, and their dating is often inaccurate. Numismatic finds in some way reveal some unknown moments in history, especially in regard to the circulation of money. However, the totality of the facts makes it possible to more or less recreate the picture of the political and social-economic life of the region.

The spread of Roman coins in the territory of the Chernyakhov culture is different in different regions. The article is devoted to the study of this issue in the forest-steppe of the left bank of the Dnieper. Systematic study of ancient coins began here in the early 20th century, but has been intensified in the last years. Currently, there is known not less than about 208 of find spots of Roman coins with a total of not less than 8150 copies (at least 390 single finds and at least 7760 coins in the hoards). The largest group consists of coins of the 1st - 2nd centuries AD coinage. Most numismatic finds of the 3rd century AD are presented by coins of Asia Minor coinage. Finds of coins of the 4th - first half of 5th centuries AD are uncommon for the region.

The ancient settlement of Nizhny Dzhulat is located on the right bank of the Terek River near the town of Maysky in Kabardino-Balkaria. A large amount of the Golden Horde coins was found there by locals during agricultural work. The authors obtained electronic images of coins found in 2010-2012. In this paper they summarize the results of the study of copper coins from the Nizhny Dzhulat complex. Based on the dated coins, the chronology of copper coins covers 100-year period from 1420s to 1520s. In the complex there are many rare and unpublished types and variants for coins, 16 of which are described in the article. Copper coinage of Djanibek II presents two new types and ten new variants. There were considered seven types of Haji-Tarkhan coins, including the unreleased dated type of "Animals at the trough" of 805 AH. Horde minted al- Jadid's coins are presented here with two types of animalistic symbolism and with a review of the unreleased coin with tamga "glasses" of Emir Ibrahim al-Jadid's coinage of 777 AH.

In this short intervention the author analyzes the attestations of the Polish coins that circulated in the Romanian space. Since they are relatively numerous, it has stopped on one of them, namely the ”potronic”. Potronic is a word certified especially on the territory of Moldova and less in the other Romanian provinces to designate a divisional silver coin commonly used in various transactions or the payment of taxes and duties, which is why this currency denomination benefits from an extended documentary fund. Relative to the issue of the origin of the name of this coin, the proposed and accepted etymology is potrojnik (po + trojnik) which in Polish means ”three” or ”triple” (meaning coin of three groszy) and which in the Romanian numismatic literature came under the name of troyak (= trojaki). The significant presence of this coin, suggestively exemplified both literally and archeologically, is not an exception, but on the contrary confirms historical realities this numeral filling to some extent the lack of cash on the Romanian market.

În această intervenţie autorul emite unele consideraţii privind denumirea unei monede care a făcut „carieră”, în special în relaţiile comerciale şi în plata birurilor şi taxelor, vreme de aproape două veacuri. Prezenţa sa masivă – cum am arătat, legată mai ales de problemele politicii inflaţioniste – a făcut să fie adesea atestată documentar, nu şi fără confirmare prin descoperirile arheologice. De-a lungul perioadei în care a fost emis, acest nominal a cunoscut variaţii metrologice, reformele monetare din anii 1619 şi 1623 generând o devalorizare treptată a monedelor prin scăderea cantităţii de argint conţinute în ele. Rolul emisiunilor de poltorac în economia Poloniei a fost acela de numerar în cadrul micilor tranzacţii curente, astfel că pătrunderea acestor monede de proastă calitate, devalorizate (inflaţioniste), în ţările vecine a fost favorizată tocmai de lipsa unei monede mărunte locale. Din punct de vedere fonetic, denumirea polturac este apropiată de poltura, monedă de bilon – imitaţie după cea poloneză – emisă pentru Ungaria şi Transilvania în secolele al XVII-lea - al XVIII-lea şi având, iniţial, aceeaşi valoare (denumirea acestui nominal este înscrisă în legenda de pe aversul piesei, alături de imaginea Fecioarei Maria cu Pruncul). Această apropiere a creat numeroase confuzii, datorate, fără îndoială, asemănării fonetice (o vreme, şi valorice) dintre termeni, iar disocierea între emisiunile poloneze şi cele ungureşti/trasilvănene sunt – în cele mai multe dintre cazuri – imposibile, în lipsa unor determinanţi, precum polturac împărătesc sau unguresc şi polturac polonez. Aluzia surselor la spaţiul în care sunt vehiculate piesele numismatice, Transilvania, respectiv Moldova, şi, uneori, Ţara Românească, nu constituie elemente de siguranţă absolută pentru atribuirea denumirii unuia sau altuia dintre „etnicele” monedelor. Cu toate aceste probleme de documentare, autorul a consemnat principalele atestări ale monedei în diverse contexte, semnalând, totodată, variatele denumiri, antroponimele şi toponimele pe care le-a inspirat, respectiv câteva expresii construite în jurul acestui nume de monedă.

In 1958, the Department of Scythian Archaeology of the Moldavian Expedition of the Institute of History and Material Culture and the Moldavian branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences under the direction of A.I. Meljukova conducted field research in the southern part of the MSSR. On the right bank of the Dniester River, studies were carried out in the area of the Olăneşti and Palanca villages, particularly in the territory of the village of Tudora. As a result, 14 settlements were studied, three of which were of the pre-Scythian time, four attributed to the Scythian period, six to the first centuries of Christianity, and three of the medieval times. The site Tudora I was located at the entrance to the village from Olăneşti and in 1958 was in better state of preservation. There were identified 2 habitation layers – one of the period of the existence of the pre-Scythian fortress and the second of the Roman period. Among the individual finds from this site there is a bronze coin attributed by A.I. Meljukova to the issues of Macedonian King Philip II. On the front side there was an image of the head of the beardless young man (Apollo?), with the hair tied, and on the reverse side - the rider on horse galloping to the right, the legend at the top: О, and in the lower part - monogram NE . The ratio of the obverse and the reverse was 45°. The analysis of the image taken from the original research report shows that the coin from Tudora I belongs to type SG 6696v, whereas items of this type usually have the diameter about 17-18 mm and the weight varying between 5.5 and 7.5 g, and are dated between 359 and 336 BC. We would like to point out that the polis that used the monogram NE was Neonteichos, but it is very unlikely that this town produced bronze imitations of the coins of King Philip II the Macedonian. In the neighboring south Danube areas, this type of coin is well-known, both in Dobrogea, but especially on the territory of Bulgaria. Prof. Ilya Prokopov considers that the respective monogram is rather a combination of letter N and a trident. The authors of this study support the Bulgarian researcher’s opinion. The bronze Macedonian coin presented in the 1958 archaeological report on Tudora (Ştefan Vodă District) is the first such find between the Prut and the Dniester. Unfortunately, the coin itself was not found in any of the museums of the Republic of Moldova. Its fate remains uncertain, with a minimal chance of recovery. The analysis of the image in the photograph allows us to date the coin the second half of the 4th century BC, even near the end of it. The brevity of the text of the report does not allow us to identify other chronological elements, the moment and conditions for the penetration of the coin into the Barbarian World.
