    Kuva est l’une des deux villes importantes du Ferghana pré-islamique et islamique (ar. Qubā). Elle contrôlait le sud de la vallée. Site de fouilles anciennes (1956-1970 surtout), elle est depuis 1996 de nouveau explorée. Un monastère bouddhiste, détruit au 8e s., des ossuaires zoroastriens, une croix nestorienne y ont été notamment trouvés. Des monnaies sur le modèle des wushu chinoises du 8e s. avaient cours localement. Les fouilles récentes ont porté principalement sur le système de fortifi...

    International audience; With four coin matrices (1 A/ and 3 R/) associated with specialized tools, the hoard from Comiac (hoard) is presently the most important discovery concerning the production of Celtic coins in Gaul. It contains 3 drachma matrices and 1 for an hemidrachma, all from the Lemovici, and was hidden on a oppidum on the territory of the Cadurci, just outside the Lemovici territory. It can therefore be considered a major find documenting the practice of travelling craftsmen, minting coins on demand, and perhaps also able to engrave the coin matrices according to the prescriptions of each tribe.; Avec quatre coins monétaires (1 d'avers et 3 de revers) associés à un outillage spécialisé, le dépôt de Comiac (Lot) est à ce jour la plus importante découverte concernant la fabrication des monnaies gauloises en Gaule. Comprenant 3 coins de drachme et un d'hémidrachme, toutes Lémovices, il a été caché sur un oppidum situé en territoire Cadurque, à la limite de la zone Lémovices. Il peut donc être considéré comme un indice essentiel pour documenter la pratique d'artisans itinérants, produisant les monnaies à la demande, et peut-être capables également de graver les coins en fonction des prescriptions de chaque peuple.

    Authors: Houlbrook, Ceri;

    Les dépôts rituels constituent une caractéristique de notre présent autant que de notre passé. On pourrait même dire que cette pratique est plus répandue aujourd'hui, avec des « agencement populaires » [folk assemblage] qui émergent de manière prolifique dans le monde entier. Qu'il s'agisse de monuments commémoratifs au bord de la route, de cairns au sommet des montagnes, de fontaines à voeux ou d’arbres à chaussures, nos paysages sont couverts de dépôts collectifs. Ces dépôts ont souvent une faible valeur économique et sont constitués spontanément, la plupart des déposants vient sur de tels sites par hasard plutôt que par projet et abandonne quelque chose qu’ils possèdent sur eux. La pièce de monnaie, un dépôt prolifique, en est un bon exemple. Cependant, cet article soutient que tous les dépôts contemporains ne sont pas effectués spontanément. Certains sont clairement planifiés, achetés ou produits avant une visite dans le but exprès d'être déposés. Cela implique un plus grand investissement émotionnel (sinon une croyance) dans le rituel, et indique que tous les agencements populaires modernes ne sont pas occasionnels et ad hoc. Pour s'engager dans cette dichotomie apparente entre les dépôts spontanés et les dépôts planifiés, cet article examine deux formes d'assemblage contemporain : l'arbre à monnaie britannique et le cadenas d'amour que l'on trouve accroché sur les ponts. Ritual deposition is as much a feature of the present as it was of the past. In fact, it could be argued that it is a more widespread feature now, with folk assemblages emerging prolifically worldwide. From roadside memorials and mountaintop cairns, to wishing fountains and shoe trees, our landscapes are bestrewn with collective deposits. Such deposits are often low in economic value and spontaneously given, with most depositors coming across such sites by chance rather than by design and surrendering something convenient. The coin, a prolific deposit, is a case in point. However, this paper argues that not all contemporary deposits are spontaneously made. Some are clearly planned; purchased or produced before a visit to an assemblage with the express purpose of being deposited. This implies greater emotional investment (if not belief) in the ritual, and indicates that not all modern-day folk assemblages are casual and ad hoc. To engage with this seeming dichotomy between the spontaneous and planned deposits, this paper will examine two forms of contemporary assemblage: the British coin-tree and the global love-lock bridge.

    Authors: Legendre, Marie;

    This article offers to re-examine a number of conclusions in the recent publication of J. Mabra on the governorate of ‘Abd al-‘Azīz b. Marwān in Egypt (65/685-86/705). The book offers an account of the tribal alliances that allowed the Marwanids to access to the califate as well as an examination of some of the ruling dynamics between ‘Abd al-Malik (65/685-86/705) and his governors of Egypt and Iraq. J. Mabra understands the administration of ‘Abd al-‘Azīz as independent from the caliphal centre in Damascus and opposed to his brother’s reform on language use and coinage. After reconsidering the reading of a number of papyrus documents, coins and narrative sources, it is offered here to see the appointment of such a governor as one of the keys of Marwanid success and to reject the idea that caliphal ruling strategies aimed at centralizing the Umayyad realm.

    Authors: Thibault Cardon;

    Here, coins are not considered as a neutral ground for economy, but as objects whose materiality is a keystone for their uses. Therefore, archeological research is a valuable source allowing the observation of the reality of the uses of coins under precise circumstances, through a well-adapted methodology. Why is this very coin used in a given situation and what does this choice mean? A deep study of well-documented cases allows us to mention various uses, such as paying wages, managing coins on a domestic level, accumulating coin stashes or leaving offering-coins in sepulchers. This work aims at creating interpretation keys in archeological numismatics as well as defining their limits. It also offers hypotheses for an anthropological analysis of long term, or longue durée, monetary uses. In this respect, theories issued by economic anthropology present very efficient ways of investigating. As such, the last part of this work will show a more theoretical analysis that will allow us to figure out why different kinds of coins always differ from each other. Coins, are thus organized as systems of values that are far from strictly economic or dogmatic but are instead systems that people use to give meaning to situations. The various uses of coins can then be put into five main categories corresponding to different ways of considering social interactions. Numismatic, as a field of study, may belong in itself to this scheme

    Catalogue d’une collection de quelque cent quatre-vingt dix monnaies de billon, de cuivre et de plomb accompagné d’images virtuelles réalisées par le système PLD (Portable Light Dome) des Musées Royaux d’Art et d’Histoire à Bruxelles (MRAH). Un commentaire sur les monnaies les plus marquantes de cette collection y est donné par rapport au corpus connu à travers des publications récentes. À cela s’ajoutent quelques paragraphes consacrés aux symboles additionnels, souvent inédits, aux ateliers monétaires notés sur soixante-dix monnaies et au monnayage de plomb qui est représenté par une bonne vingtaine d’exemplaires. Catalogue of a collection of some one hundred ninety billon, copper and lead coins with virtual illus¬trations created by the PLD (Portable Light Dome) system of the Royal Museums of Art and History in Brussels. Some paragraphs comment the most significant coins of this collection compared to the corpus known through recent publications. Several observations are devoted to additional symbols, often unpublished, to the mintnames which appear on seventy coins and to the lead coinage which is repres¬ented by over twenty coins.

    Authors: Houlbrook, Ceri;

    Authors: Legendre, Marie;

    Authors: Thibault Cardon;
