It contains 3 drachma matrices and 1 for an hemidrachma, all from the Lemovici, and was hidden on a oppidum on the territory of the Cadurci, just outside the Lemovici territory. It can therefore be considered a major find documenting the practice of travelling craftsmen, minting coins on demand, and perhaps also able to engrave the coin matrices according to the prescriptions of each tribe.; Avec quatre coins monétaires (1 d'avers et 3 de revers) associés à un outillage spécialisé, le dépôt de Comiac (Lot) est à ce jour la plus importante découverte concernant la fabrication des monnaies gauloises en Gaule.

A close review of the available epigraphic and iconographic evidence shows that it cannot provide any firm chronological anchor for the kingdom of Liḥyān nor for the Nabataean takeover of the area: only archaeology may offer new insights into the history of this important but poorly known period. Recent excavation results from Hegra / Madā’in Ṣāliḥ and from various sites in the al-‘Ulā oasis (Dadan / Khuraybah, Tall al-Kathīb, Khīf al-Zahrah) suggest a disruption in the settlement history and the material culture of the area in the 3rd c. BC. At that time, Dadan and its peripheral settlements seem to have entered a phase of decline, while the Iron Age painted pottery tradition probably came to an end. Conversely, the Saudi-French excavations at Hegra show uninterrupted occupation and development throughout the second half of the 1st millennium BC, suggesting that this site had replaced Dadan as a regional centre by the early 2nd c. BC – i.e. well before the commonly accepted date for the Nabataean takeover of the area. Numismatic data confirm the existence of an autonomous power at Hegra from the late 3rd or early 2nd c. through the 1st c. BC, revealing a hitherto unknown chapter in the political and cultural history of northwest Arabia. International audience

While literary sources are useful to identify possible provenances, they potentially bias interpretations proper because of a variety of limitations of their time. Archeological evidence in the form of mining shafts, galleries, spoil heaps, and tools also provides a tangible and reliable record of mining, but dating such activity can be problematic and the record is inconsistent. Here we propose a new approach driven by Pb isotopic data rather than numismatic groups. Statistical analysis of Pb isotopic data is used to identify ore-defined isotopic clusters. This new method is based on an algorithm that predicts the number of isotopic clusters necessary to fulfill the simple condition that variance within isotopic clusters is minimized whereas inter-cluster variance is maximized. Since each cluster reflects a discrete geological episode within a particular environment broadly datable to a specific Pb model age, it can be identified as a potential source exploited by ancient miners. We explore the potential of this method in two examples using data from coins and ores respectively. In the first example, Roman Republican silver coins form three 'end-member' clusters sourced in mining districts with Cenozoic, Mesozoic, and Paleozoic Pb model ages. The example demonstrates how sources of silver used to mint coinage of the Roman Republic shifted within 50 years of the end of the Second Punic War in 201 BCE. In the second example using Aegean galena samples, Pb isotopes distinguish components with model ages datable to the Hercynian basement, the recent Aegean tectonic province, and Cyprus, noting that significant silver mining districts may remain unidentified in either Spain or the Aegean world. We further clarify a number of potential analytical issues and advocate that users of Pb isotopes for tracing archeological artifacts measure all four lead isotopes and inspect the 12 proposed isotope combinations in order to select those that provide the best representation of the data. We also emphasize that full advantage should be taken of the geologically informed parameters (model age and Th/U/Pb relationships) to identify the geological context of metal sources. The metallic analysis of coins connected betwen them participate in the reconstruction of monetary issues and in their characterization. While the homogeneity of the results consolidates the idea of a standardized issue, distances in the composition of the alloy can carry several interpretations. This paper examines six files of data concerning the celtic gold and wonders about the precision of analysis and the quality of manufaturing. It underlines how much the duration of an issue is an essential factor in a possible variation of composition. At last, there is a talk of the notion of tolerance and the idea of control.
