description Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Article 2010 Ireland EnglishPublisher:The Royal Numismatic Society Publicly fundedThe Roman emperor Caligula issued the same type of quadrans throughout his reign, where the obverse depicted a pileus, a type of cap given to former slaves upon their manumission, and the reverse the letters RCC. Eckhel suggested that the obverse referred to the restoration of liberty as represented by his return of the elections to the popular assembly from the Senate, and the reverse referred to a remission of the sales-tax. Barrett has recently argued that both sides probably referred to the execution in late 39 of Cornelius Lentulus Gaetulicus, the governor of Upper Germany. This note argues that Caligula chose to depict the pileus on his quadrans in order to celebrate his new policy of strictly enforcing the rules for granting citizenship and that he aimed the design at the urban mob in particular in order to emphasise that he was protecting them against those seeking to encroach upon their privileges

Although the governors were only designated by the title procurator from the mid-first century onwards, this series of coins is conventionally referred to as “procuratorial.” All are bronzes minted in Jerusalem in a single denomination, generally identified as the prutah, and bear aniconic motifs. Because they carry year dates, we know that these coins were issued fairly sporadically and the possible reasons for this are reviewed. The coin types are analysed and their respective origins and meanings identified. An attempt is made to assess the extent to which their motifs support the picture presented in the literary sources of the changing political climate in both in Judaea and Rome over the period in which these coins were minted.

Mabra on the governorate of ‘Abd al-‘Azīz b. Marwān in Egypt (65/685-86/705). The book offers an account of the tribal alliances that allowed the Marwanids to access to the califate as well as an examination of some of the ruling dynamics between ‘Abd al-Malik (65/685-86/705) and his governors of Egypt and Iraq. J. Mabra understands the administration of ‘Abd al-‘Azīz as independent from the caliphal centre in Damascus and opposed to his brother’s reform on language use and coinage. After reconsidering the reading of a number of papyrus documents, coins and narrative sources, it is offered here to see the appointment of such a governor as one of the keys of Marwanid success and to reject the idea that caliphal ruling strategies aimed at centralizing the Umayyad realm.

AbstractThe story of the Frankish coinage is generally told from the Carolingian rulers' perspective as the rise and fall of royal control over minting. Increased coin finds have added nuance to this story by giving us new understanding of coin circulation and coin use. Recent studies confirm just how effectively Charlemagne and Louis the Pious controlled the Frankish coinage, which provided them with both political and economic benefits. Between 792/793 and 840, trade accelerated, and the Carolingian empire became increasingly monetised—though the use and availability of coins varied between regions. Tight royal control loosened after 840, when royal coinages became far more variable in quality. Around 880, the royal monopoly on striking coins was broken. From the perspective of traders and other coin users, having access to an acceptable means of exchange was more important than the availability of specifically royal coins. Trade could and did thrive in the world of regional coin circulation before 750 and after 840. Charlemagne and Louis the Pious's close royal control of the coinage, and the empire‐wide circulation of coins in 792/793–840, stand out as exceptional when set against the early medieval norm of regional coin production and circulation in Francia. The article is accompanied by an appendix introducing key resources for Carolingian numismatics.

This paper takes the opportunity to look back over what we have been doing, consider what the guidelines suggest, and makes recommendations as to where we could be going. In particular it argues that we should be making more of existing database technologies and the internet, and that the analysis of coins should be integrated with other aspects of the archaeological record. The paper is not a new set of guidelines, but is intended to stimulate debate.
