    A paper is devoted to a publication of a rare for a Northern Black Sea region find – a half of an imitation of a Roman Republican denarius serratus revealed in Olbia Pontica in 2003 in cultural strata during the excavations of the «L-1» area, a Central part of a Citadel on the plateau the Upper City. The item supposed to be a barbarian imitation of Roman denarius serratus of 81 BC of a Geto-Dacian minting. The coin find in Olbia, most likely, is connected with the historical events, described by Dio Chrysostom, about the Getae attack on the polis that took place c. the mid-1st century BC.

    The present paper is presenting a case study of a rescue archaeological investigation following the building of a motorway. The research area revealed the civilian baths complex of the Roman auxiliary fort of Optatiana in the province of Dacia (today, Sutor, Sălaj County, Romania). The analysis of coin finds, issuers, types, denominations, within the archaeological contexts they were found in, reveal the fact that only one-two coins may lead the archaeologist into a chronological pitfall, while a group of more than five single finds with similar dating elements (e.g. same issuer or his successor(s) from the same context/phase may be a true help in understanding the development of an archaeological complex.

    Authors: Metodi Yordanov Manov;

    The paper presents an unknown coin die, which is for obverse of denarii of Augustus. The coin die is said to have been found many years ago in the vicinity of the village of Gigen, district of Pleven – near the ancient Roman colony of Ulpia Oescus and is now kept in a private collection. Only the bronze plate is preserved, where in negative is featured a portrait of Augustus, turned to the left, and around the portrait image is disposed the legend: AVGVSTVS DIVI F – mirrored. The coin type of the coin die is for denarii of Augustus struck in the mint at Lugdunum (today Lyon, France) between 15 and 11 BC. The new coin die presented is of the same type as one of the coin dies from the collection of the National Institute of Archaeology with Museum in Sofia. The collection of the same museum in Sofia stores another obverse coin die for denarii of Augustus of a type struck in the mint at Colonia Patricia (today Cordoba, Spain). All three obverse coin dies for denarii of Augustus are discussed in a general context, because their time of making is between 17 – 16 and 15 – 11 BC. All three obverse coin dies of Augustus are represented as dies of moving military camp mints.

    Authors: Emre Erdan;

    In this study, a series of Tisna's coins dated to the 4th century BC are discussed. It is known that Tisna, a less known city of Aiolis which is one of the important Iron Age cultural regions of Western Anatolia, gained polis status in the 4th century BC. The archaeological surveys we have been continuing in the site proved that Tisna was inhabited since the end of the 3rd millennium BC. An item depicted in the coins, which are among the most important finds of the city, constitutes the main subject of this study. This item was often described as a sword or a scabbard in previous publications. However, when the object is examined iconographically, it is surprising that it is actually a Scythian-Persian sword, akinakes. As a result of our examinations and comparisons it has been suggested that coins with depiction of akinakes may be related to both Persian identity in the region and the cult of Ares.

    Authors: Christos Tsirogiannis;

    On September 13, 2020 a quarter of a century had elapsed since the Swiss and Italian authorities raid in the Free Port of Geneva, on the warehouses of Giacomo Medici, later convicted of involvement in cases of trafficked antiquities. Since then, many other raids followed on properties of other notorious antiquities traffickers, thousands of antiquities were confiscated from them and their invaluable archives were discovered and seized. The research on these archives resulted in hundreds of notable repatriations so far, but mainly in the enrichment of our knowledge about the criminal way in which the so-called ‘reputable’ members of the international antiquities market have been acting since the 1970 UNESCO Convention, which they completely ignored in practice. Despite the numerous occasions on which these ‘reputable’ members were identified as involved, even today they continue to act in the same way, some without any (or known) legal sanctions. This chapter reviews the illicit associations of one of these ‘prominent’ members of the international antiquities market, the ‘Royal-Athena Galleries’ in New York, a gallery run by the antiquities dealer Jerome Eisenberg, who has repeatedly been found selling looted, smuggled and stolen antiquities. I then present seven antiquities, most of them identified in October 2019, one in March 2020, soon before the retirement of Jerome Eisenberg and the closure of ‘Royal-Athena Galleries’ on October 31, 2020. This piece lays out all the relevant evidence from the confiscated archives and combines everyone involved to illustrate the network that ‘circulated’ these seven objects. This case study also highlights all the problems that are ongoing in this research field, proving that essentially nothing has changed since 1995, or even 1970, and we indeed deserve the (illicit) antiquities market we still have.     Authors: Schaal, Katia;

    Commandée par le gouvernement en 1895 à Jules-Clément Chaplain et mise en circulation en 1899, la monnaie d’or au type du coq gaulois a suscité une quantité pléthorique de commentaires. Un dépouillement consciencieux de la presse de l’époque nous permet de retracer la conception, la réception et l’usage des pièces de dix et vingt francs. L’analyse du rythme et du contenu des articles nous renseigne sur l’investissement d’un nouvel acteur dans l’écriture de l’histoire de la monnaie contemporaine. Le journaliste, qu’il soit simple chroniqueur ou ardent polémiste, apparaît successivement soutien indéfectible de la réforme monétaire, témoin de la longue élaboration des symboles puis de l’outillage, pour finalement se faire juge et critique des qualités artistiques et techniques de l’objet. Il révèle enfin comment, au-delà du médailleur ou de la volonté d’un ministre, cette réforme a véritablement mobilisé l’attention des Français. Commissioned by the French government from Jules-Clément Chaplain in 1895 and put into circulation in 1899, the gold coin with the Gallic cockerel has given rise to a plethora of comments. A careful examination of the press of the time allows us to trace the conception, reception and use of the ten- and twenty-franc coins. An analysis of the publication rhythm and content of the articles provides information on the involvement of a new actor in the writing of the history of contemporary coins. The journalist, whether a simple chronicler or an ardent polemicist, appears successively to be an unwavering supporter of monetary reform, a witness to the long elaboration of symbols and then of the tools, and finally a judge and critic of the artistic and technical qualities of the object. Finally, the article reveals how, beyond the medal maker or minister’s will, this reform really captured the attention of the French.

    Authors: Metodi Yordanov Manov;

    Authors: Emre Erdan;

    Authors: Christos Tsirogiannis;

    On September 13, 2020 a quarter of a century had elapsed since the Swiss and Italian authorities raid in the Free Port of Geneva, on the warehouses of Giacomo Medici, later convicted of involvement in cases of trafficked antiquities. Since then, many other raids followed on properties of other notorious antiquities traffickers, thousands of antiquities were confiscated from them and their invaluable archives were discovered and seized. The research on these archives resulted in hundreds of notable repatriations so far, but mainly in the enrichment of our knowledge about the criminal way in which the so-called ‘reputable’ members of the international antiquities market have been acting since the 1970 UNESCO Convention, which they completely ignored in practice. Despite the numerous occasions on which these ‘reputable’ members were identified as involved, even today they continue to act in the same way, some without any (or known) legal sanctions. This chapter reviews the illicit associations of one of these ‘prominent’ members of the international antiquities market, the ‘Royal-Athena Galleries’ in New York, a gallery run by the antiquities dealer Jerome Eisenberg, who has repeatedly been found selling looted, smuggled and stolen antiquities. I then present seven antiquities, most of them identified in October 2019, one in March 2020, soon before the retirement of Jerome Eisenberg and the closure of ‘Royal-Athena Galleries’ on October 31, 2020. This piece lays out all the relevant evidence from the confiscated archives and combines everyone involved to illustrate the network that ‘circulated’ these seven objects. This case study also highlights all the problems that are ongoing in this research field, proving that essentially nothing has changed since 1995, or even 1970, and we indeed deserve the (illicit) antiquities market we still have.     Authors: Schaal, Katia;
