The present paper analyses a hoard of Sasanian drachms which was found in 1950 in Dushanbe. So far, it is the unique treasure of Sasanian coins from Tajikistan.

The present paper is dealing with the possibility offered by a Roman imperial coin hoard to discover, on one hand, the constant feature of human nature to make mistakes during working activity, and on the other hand, the fact that any new hoard may come up with new coin types or variants.The hoard Potaissa III (in Roman Dacia; nowadays, Turda, Romania) brought up various peculiar coins, that are discussed in detail here, that reveal: tricky monetary policy; engraving mistakes; engraver’s skill; new coin types; new coin type variants and post-minting human behaviour upon the coin.

The subject of this article is the bronze issue which bears a shield ornamented with the head of Herakles to ¾ r. on the obverse and a helmet on the reverse side along with the initials B-A, monogram below left, and a kerykeion below right. These coins were issued to be given at the beginning of the month to meet the daily needs of soldiers in the Macedonian army. This issue has been classified under the title of Asia Minor and sometimes Western Asia Minor without any mint attribution in the main reference sources. However, there is no recorded example of these from archaeological excavations and surveys carried out in Western Anatolia. But these coins, which do not circulate in the west, appear in the Cilician region. Samples were found and recorded in the excavations of Nagidos, Olba and Tarsus Gözlükule. The most suitable minting place for these bronze coins, which are found intensely in and around Tarsus, is naturally Tarsus, the most important mint in the region of the Macedonian kingdom. On other Macedonian regal bronze coins minted in this city, the kerykeion symbol is often used and on some examples, both kerykeion and monogram are used. More than twenty of these bronze coins known to be included in museums of Ankara Anatolian Civilizations, Izmir, Sinop, Afyon and Adana are included in the Mersin Archeology Museum collection, which is located only 25 km from Tarsus; on the other side it does not circulate in Salamis and throughout Cyprus which issued bronze coins with a kerykeion symbol and monogram. These facts support the attribution to Tarsus.

The developments that started in social and economic life after the Treaty of Karlowitz in 1699 continued during the reign of Ahmed III. In this period, the Ottoman Empire started to make innovations in the western style; political, social, cultural and economic relations with the West have been improved and a new lifestyle has emerged. New mansions and pavilions were built, and European influence began to be seen in architecture. A printing house was opened, important works were translated into Turkish, the shipyard was rehabilitated, a fire brigade was established, and there were developments in the field of medicine. Industrial production expanded in big cities, new branches of activity emerged; Agricultural production and exports have increased, especially in the weaving industry.It is possible to add the developments in money to these developments in the political, social, cultural and economic fields. In this study, III. Ahmed period was examined in terms of money; The regulations and developments in money, the common coins in circulation, the Egyptian Mint and the mintage of lightly coins, the smuggling of gold and silver, counterfeiting incidents, the fair values of coins and coin corrections are discussed. 1699 Karlofça Antlaşması’ndan sonra sosyal ve ekonomik hayatta başlayan gelişmeler III. Ahmed döneminde de devam etmiştir. Bu dönemde Osmanlı Devleti batı tarzında yenilikler yapmaya başlamış; batı ile siyasi, sosyal, kültürel ve ekonomik ilişkiler geliştirilmiş, yeni bir hayat tarzı ortaya çıkmıştır. Yeni köşkler ve kasırlar inşa edilmiş, mimaride Avrupa tesiri görülmeye başlamıştır. Matbaa açılmış, önemli eserler Türkçeye çevrilmiş, tersane ıslah edilmiş, tulumbacı ocağı kurulmuş ve tıp alanında gelişmeler yaşanmıştır. Büyük şehirlerde sanayi imalatı genişlemiş, yeni faaliyet dalları ortaya çıkmış; başta dokuma sanayi olmak üzere, zirai üretim ve ihracat artmıştır. Siyasi, sosyal, kültürel ve ekonomik alandaki bu gelişmelere, paradaki gelişmeleri de eklemek mümkündür. Bu çalışmada III. Ahmed dönemi para yönünden incelenmiş; para konusunda yapılan düzenlemeler ve yaşanan gelişmeler, tedavülde yaygın olarak bulunan paralar, Mısır Darphanesi ve ayarı düşük para darbı, altın ve gümüşün dışarıya kaçırılması, kalpazanlık olayları, paraların rayiçleri ve sikke tashihleri konularına değinilmiştir.
