    Authors: Coelho, Maria Helena da Cruz;

    In this work we will study essentially the ecclesiastical members of king João I’s royal chapel. We will begin by presenting a list containing the number and category of the clerics who constituted it, and their respective salaries. We discriminate the functions of its principal members – head chaplain, singers, almoner – and give particular attention to the king’s confessors, recruited among the mendicant friars, who played a fundamental role in the court’s adoption of lines of spirituality and devotion, as well as in the kingdom’s politics, due to their proximity to the king and the royal family. We then take a closer look at the political-religious dimension of this organ, stressing the infl uence exerted by those clergymen on the king – both at the personal level, acquiring assets, positions, benefi ts and privileges, and in their contribution to defi ning and carrying out the kingdom’s policies.A lo largo de estas páginas se estudia a los eclesiásticos al servicio de la Capilla Real de don Juan I de Portugal. En primer lugar, se da a conocer una lista que representa el número y categoría de clérigos que la componían, así como sus respectivos salarios; se detallan las funciones de sus principales miembros, tales como capellán mayor, cantores o limosnero; y se presta especial atención a los confesores del rey reclutados entre los mendicantes, los cuales tenían un papel fundamental tanto en la adopción de las líneas de espiritualidad y devoción de la corte, como también por su proximidad con el rey y la familia real en la política del reino. A continuación, se profundiza en la dimensión político-religiosa de este órgano, poniendo de relieve el peso de estos religiosos próximos al rey, tanto a nivel personal, consiguiendo bienes, cargos, beneficios y privilegios, como en su contribución para la definición y concreción de la política del reino.     Authors: Oriol, Elodie;

    International audience; Using the correspondence of musicians, this article aims to reconstruct and analyze a conflict that arose in 1784 concerning an entrance examination for the role of choirmaster organized by the Congregazione dei musici di Roma, an institution that controlled the performance of sacred music in Rome. The different stages of this conflict can be reconstructed from letters exchanged between Padre Martini, the choirmaster of Bologna, and two musicians in Rome : Luigi Antonio Sabbatini, one of his former students and choirmaster of the Church of Santi Dodici Apostoli in Rome, and Giovanni Battista Casali, one of the examiners implicated in the conflict. Sabbatini contested the decision of the congregation, notably the refusal of admit two of his students, and decried, in particular, the role played by Giovanni Battista Casali who enjoyed at the time a certain authority in the musical world of Rome. This incident, in all its implications, sheds light on the first signs of the progressive professionalization of the musical milieu of Rome in the second half of the eighteenth century. Indeed, the tightening up of requirements and the enhanced assessment of musical qualities appears markedly in the establishment and organization of examinations. The study of this conflict in the statements of choirmasters reveals the essence of the procedures for qualification, and thus clarifies the tensions that existed in the local musical world dealing with the access to the most lucrative posts, both materially and symbolically. Such an analysis shows the conflicts of authority that pervaded this milieu, the new alliances it favored, and the strategies used by musicians to assure their power on the urban scene. This article will further suggest topics for reflection about the definition of professional codes, as well as the adoption of collective professional conduct, generated or modified by the forms of internal qualifications introduced in musical institutions.; À partir de la correspondance de musiciens, cet article propose de reconstruire et d’analyser un conflit né en 1784 autour d’un examen d’entrée pour la fonction de maître de chapelle organisé par la Congregazione dei musici di Roma, institution qui contrôlait la pratique musicale sacrée à Rome. Les étapes du conflit peuvent être reconstruites grâce aux lettres échangées entre Padre Martini, maître de chapelle à Bologne, et deux musiciens exerçant à Rome : Luigi Antonio Sabbatini, l’un de ses anciens élèves et maître de chapelle de l’église des Santi Dodici Apostoli à Rome, et Giovanni Battista Casali, l’un des examinateurs mis en cause. L. A. Sabbatini contestait la décision de la congrégation, à savoir le refus d’admettre deux de ses élèves, et dénonçait notamment le rôle joué par Giovanni Battista Casali, qui jouissait alors d’une forte autorité dans le milieu musical romain. Cette affaire éclaire, dans toutes leurs implications, les premiers signes d’une professionnalisation progressive du milieu musical romain au cours de la seconde moitié du XVIIIe siècle. En effet, l’affermissement des exigences et du contrôle des qualités musicales passait notamment par la mise en place et l’organisation d’examens. L’étude du conflit, à travers les témoignages des maîtres de chapelle, permet d’entrer au cœur des procédures de qualification et de mettre ainsi au jour les tensions qui pouvaient exister au sein du milieu musical local pour l’accès aux charges les plus rémunératrices, sur le plan matériel comme symbolique. L’examen est révélateur des conflits d’autorité qui traversent ce milieu, des recompositions qu’il favorise et des stratégies mises en œuvre par les musiciens pour asseoir leur position sur la scène urbaine. Il ouvre des pistes de réflexion sur la définition et le partage des codes professionnels, comme sur l’adoption de comportements professionnels collectifs, générés ou modifiés par les formes de qualifications internes introduites au sein des institutions musicales.

    Authors: Ferreira, Luís Gonçalves;

    The Barros family, has, for centuries, administered the morgado of Real, the chapel of Senhora da Graça and a hospital in the city of Braga that harboured poor women. This hospital, named the Hospital de Santiago and the Hospital das Velhas (hospital for elderly women), was founded in the Late Middle Ages and continued to function until the 19th century. The current study analyses how aid to the poor, in an urban context, served as a catalyser of the prestige of the family that administered it. Using manuscript, printed and iconographic sources, processed by a multidisciplinary methodology, this investigation discusses the main patrimonial, social and symbolic coordinates that allowed the survival of the morgado and of the hospital in the long term.     Authors: Price, Patricia L.;

    Jesús Malverde, a bandit who was assassinated in 1909, crystallizes the struggle for place-understood both literally and metaphorically-in northern Mexico. The socially and economically marginal people who revered him in the nineteenth century adore him as a lay saint today. Contention over building a chapel to Malverde in Culiacán, the capital city of the northern Mexican state of Sinaloa, distils broader tensions over the Mexican state’s persistent deferral of the poor from inclusion in the official landscape of the nation. Malverde’s appropriation by Sinaloa’s narcotraffickers as their patron saint extends this symbolic and material claim to legitimacy to include those who exist outside the official boundaries. The border between the sacred and the profane is often a site of social struggle, and the case of Malverde is no exception. While the legend of Malverde may well have been invented, its negotiation has proven remarkably long-lived and powerful in shaping and reshaping the iconographic and material landscapes of social inclusion and exclusion. Malverde thus offers an empty signifier whose multiple interpretations yield a surplus of symbolic meanings and material production based on the circulation, negotiation, appropriation, and reinterpretation of those meanings.

    Authors: Béatrice Perez;

    A través del estudio del itinerario de Marcos Juan Jaqueto, este artículo pretende centrarse en la vida de un comerciante de clase media en los confines de la Nueva España. La compañía mercantil de cacao del veneciano Marcos Juan Jaqueto, fallecido en Tabasco en 1603, nos informa sobre su clientela novohispana, las formas de préstamo y la forma de atesorar la riqueza acumulada. La información sobre el comercio temprano de cacao y plata a finales del siglo XVI es, por lo tanto, valiosa. Más elocuentemente, las cuentas de su empresa en el momento del inventario después de su muerte atestiguan las redes de comercio entre el Viejo Mundo y América, los circuitos económicos entre el Mediterráneo, el Atlántico y la costa del Pacífico. Por último, el testamento que se ha conservado da una idea de este cómputo final de la vida después de la muerte, en el que la salvación se descifra mediante la fundación de una capilla en Tlaxcala para la paz de su alma y la de sus difuntos. Through the study of the adventures of Marcos Juan Jaqueto, this article intends to focus on the life of a middle-class merchant in the confines of New Spain. The cocoa merchant company of the Venetian Marcos Juan Jaqueto, who died in Tabasco in 1603, informs us about his novohispanas clientele, the forms of loans and how to keep the accumulated wealth. The information on the early trade of cocoa and silver at the end of the 16th century is thus valuable. More eloquently, the accounts of his company at the time of the inventory after his death attest to the trading networks between the Old World and America, the economic circuits between the Mediterranean, the Atlantic and the Pacific coast. Finally, the will that has been preserved gives a glimpse of this final accounting of the afterlife, in which salvation is deciphered by the foundation of a chapel in Tlaxcala for the peace of his soul and that of his deceased.

    U ovome radu izloženi su rezultati četvrte kampanje arheoloških i konzervatorskih istraživanja benediktinskog samostana i crkve Sv. Petra u Osoru na otoku Cresu održane tijekom svibnja 2009. godine. Ona su dio znanstvenoga projekta MIC-a za kasnu antiku i srednji vijek Sveučilišta u Zagrebu i istraživačkog centra ARTeHIS C.N.R.S.–a iz Dijona, te Konzervatorskoga odjela u Rijeci. Također su prezentirani prvi rezultati geofizičkih istraživanja koja su provedena tijekom zime 2010. godine na prostoru sjeverno, južno i istočno od arheološki istraživanih zona. Osnovni cilj ovogodišnje kampanje bio je dovršetak istraživanja sektora III, te sektora VI, odnosno dijela lokaliteta smještenog iza začelja postojeće crkve. Time se pokušalo utvrditi narav i funkciju građevina pronađenih u južnome i središnjemu dijelu istražene zone, ustanoviti sve građevne faze iz antičkoga razdoblja, a čiji su ostaci posebno uočljivi u jugoistočnom dijelu nalazišta, te utvrditi rasprostiranje i dubinu ukopa srednjevjekovnoga groblja. Naime, jedan od ciljeva istraživačkoga projekta, koji traje već četiri godine, jest utvrđivanje prostorno-arhitektonskih datosti lokaliteta prije i u trenutku osnivanja samostana početkom XI. stoljeća putem dijakronijske prostorne analize toga područja unutar zidina antičkoga grada. U istraživanjima sektora VI ove su godine po prvi put otkrivene dvije protopovijesne žare. Jedna od njih je istražena i na temelju analize ostataka metodom C14 datirana u X.-IX. stoljeće prije Krista. Taj pronalazak predstavlja najstariji sa sigurnošću datiran nalaz na području grada Osora i otoka Cresa. Na području istoga sektora, u sljedećoj se fazi, koju možemo okvirno smjesti u kasno liburnsko razdoblje, gradi građevina od koje smo otkrili dva segmenta suhozidne konstrukcije čiju tehniku zidanja možemo usporediti s onom primjenjenom kod građevina otkrivenih na otprilike stotinu metara od našega lokaliteta na sjeverozapadnome području grada. Geofizička istraživanja su provedena sjeverno, istočno i južno od crkve, na površini od otprilike 700 m2. Cilj ovih ispitivanja bio je dvojak: trebalo je utvrditi granice prostiranja prostorija i građevina koje su otkrivene u arheološkim istraživanjima na području istočno i sjeverno od crkve te provjeriti pretpostavku o postojanju samostanskog klaustra s galerijama južno od crkve. Na temelju preliminarne obrade rezultata moguće je navesti nekoliko zapažanja (sl. 18). Otkriven je nastavak ogradnog zida samostana čiji je segment otkriven tijekom istraživanja 2008. godine (zid 6.111). Taj je zid vjerojatno predstavljao sjevernu granicu terase na kojoj su bili smješteni samostanski sklop i groblje. Istočno od sektora III geofizičkim je istraživanja otkriven produžetak zida 3.117 antičke prostorije te njezini gabariti, kao i nastavak zida 3.113 koji označava poziciju južnog samostanskog zida. Zabilježen je veliki broj elektromagnetskih signala koji vjerojatno odražavaju zidane strukture, međutim njihova bi grafička interpretacija bila presmiona. Ipak, neke značajnije «reflektirajuće mase» bit će predmetom sljedeće istraživačke kampanje s ciljem preciznijeg utvrđivanja njihovih značajki. Nijedna od brojnih struktura koje su uočene južno od crkve ne može sa sigurnošću biti povezana s klaustrom s trijemovima. Međutim, ograničenja korištene metode istraživanja kao i poteškoće iščitavanja rezultata nameću oprez, i ove se tvrdnje ne smiju smatrati konačnima sve dok se ne provede arheološka provjera. Građevina koju je A. Mohorovičić djelomično iskopao pedesetih godina jasno se ocrtava južno od crkve. Istočni zid te prostorije proteže se dalje prema jugu gdje se prekida i nastavlja u smjeru istoka, a moguće je rekonstruirati i segment još jednoga zida koji mu je paralelan. Također su uz južni zid crkve uočene dvije dosad nepoznate prostorije, od kojih je jednu moguće interpretirati kao zvonik. U svakome slučaju brojnost signala upućuje na bogat arheološki potencijal ovoga sektora.

    Authors: Coelho, Maria Helena da Cruz;

    In this work we will study essentially the ecclesiastical members of king João I’s royal chapel. We will begin by presenting a list containing the number and category of the clerics who constituted it, and their respective salaries. We discriminate the functions of its principal members – head chaplain, singers, almoner – and give particular attention to the king’s confessors, recruited among the mendicant friars, who played a fundamental role in the court’s adoption of lines of spirituality and devotion, as well as in the kingdom’s politics, due to their proximity to the king and the royal family. We then take a closer look at the political-religious dimension of this organ, stressing the infl uence exerted by those clergymen on the king – both at the personal level, acquiring assets, positions, benefi ts and privileges, and in their contribution to defi ning and carrying out the kingdom’s policies.A lo largo de estas páginas se estudia a los eclesiásticos al servicio de la Capilla Real de don Juan I de Portugal. En primer lugar, se da a conocer una lista que representa el número y categoría de clérigos que la componían, así como sus respectivos salarios; se detallan las funciones de sus principales miembros, tales como capellán mayor, cantores o limosnero; y se presta especial atención a los confesores del rey reclutados entre los mendicantes, los cuales tenían un papel fundamental tanto en la adopción de las líneas de espiritualidad y devoción de la corte, como también por su proximidad con el rey y la familia real en la política del reino. A continuación, se profundiza en la dimensión político-religiosa de este órgano, poniendo de relieve el peso de estos religiosos próximos al rey, tanto a nivel personal, consiguiendo bienes, cargos, beneficios y privilegios, como en su contribución para la definición y concreción de la política del reino.     Authors: Oriol, Elodie;

    Authors: Ferreira, Luís Gonçalves;

    The Barros family, has, for centuries, administered the morgado of Real, the chapel of Senhora da Graça and a hospital in the city of Braga that harboured poor women. This hospital, named the Hospital de Santiago and the Hospital das Velhas (hospital for elderly women), was founded in the Late Middle Ages and continued to function until the 19th century. The current study analyses how aid to the poor, in an urban context, served as a catalyser of the prestige of the family that administered it. Using manuscript, printed and iconographic sources, processed by a multidisciplinary methodology, this investigation discusses the main patrimonial, social and symbolic coordinates that allowed the survival of the morgado and of the hospital in the long term.     Authors: Price, Patricia L.;

    Authors: Béatrice Perez;
