L’histoire de l’ex-Empire russe, de l’URSS et du monde post-soviétique est essentielle à la compréhension des enjeux géopolitiques actuels. Cet ouvrage en propose une lecture claire en étudiant des problématiques communes à l'histoire de la fin de l'empire russe (à partir de la Révolution de 1905), à l'URSS et aux États post-soviétiques. Cet ouvrage, à travers une histoire thématique et chronologique, traite de plus d’un siècle d’histoire d’un Empire qui éclate à la fin des années 1980 avec la fin de l’URSS, laissant chacun des États qui en sont issus suivre des trajectoires divergentes, mais présentant souvent des traits communs. Cette histoire sera abordée à travers un ensemble de thématiques essentielles pour comprendre l’articulation entre les dynamiques sociales, politiques, économiques et culturelles de sociétés extrêmement diverses. Chaque thème, objet d’un chapitre, couvrira l’ensemble de la période qui s’étend du début du xxe siècle à aujourd’hui.

Loin d’être un programme de recherche tourné uniquement vers l’abstraction, la physiocratie comporte une dimension empirique tout à fait centrale dans sa constitution et dans son développement. L’étude de cette dimension permet de mettre au jour les liens généalogiques et méthodologiques qui ont uni le mouvement physiocratique et les traditions anglaise et française de l’arithmétique politique. En outre, une attention portée à l’inventaire des différentes activités agricoles et à la mesure de leurs productions respectives témoigne d’une autre influence importante dans la construction de l’économie politique de Quesnay, à savoir l’agronomie, alors en plein renouveau sous l’impulsion de Duhamel du Monceau.

Using as case studies the initiatives developed by two museum curators, the Belgian bibliographer Paul Otlet (1868–1944) and the Austrian social scientist Otto Neurath (1882–1945), and their subsequent collaboration with an extended network of scientists, philanthropists, artists, and social activists, this article provides a portrait of the general movement toward the creation of a new form of museum: the “museum of the future,” as Neurath labeled it. This museum would be able to enlighten the people by showing the nature of modern industrial civilization. The promoters of the “museum of the future” intended to reform museum practices by organizing exhibitions of social facts, but also by integrating several dimensions – architecture, commerce, entertainment, pedagogy, and science and technology – to create a holistic frame to address their audience. However, the effortlessly circulating museum Neurath and Otlet envisioned stood in sharp contrast to the many, often immaterial, boundaries they encountered in their attempt to implement their vision. Ever-growing nationalism, the professionalization of social science, and the increasing commercialization of scientific vulgarization are some of the factors that help explain their failure.

To assess the consequences of warfare and revolution on the French economy from 1792 to 1815, this chapter compares the dynamics of the French economy in the decades preceding 1789 and those following 1815. It discusses institutional changes, sectorial transformations, and the macroeconomic trends of the French economy. The institutional reforms implemented by the various governments during the period between 1789 and 1815 were wide ranging; however, their direct impact on the economy is difficult to measure. What seems clear is that, on the whole, they reinforced the authority of the central state and favoured the development of rural France. The period had a profound influence on the industrial structure of the French economy. External trade was shattered by more than two decades of war and blockades, and trade and export-led industrial sectors were badly hit. After 1815, the dynamism of the French economy was transferred from coastal ports and regions to the interior. These changes shaped the French economy of the nineteenth century which was dominated by agriculture and specialised in industrial sectors and techniques that used sparingly coal energy sparingly, and thus took an original path of development.

En 1851, une variable relative aux infirmités est introduite dans le recensement français. Jusqu’en 1876, les individus atteints de folie, de la perte d’un sens (vue, ouïe, parole) ou de goitre sont dénombrés lors de ces opérations quinquennales. En parallèle, des comptes rendus sur le recrutement militaire font état des jeunes hommes impropres à porter les armes pour cause d’infirmités. Le présent article explore les sources d’erreurs dans ces deux productions statistiques, avec l’hypothèse de sous-déclarations dans les recensements et de sur-déclarations dans les comptes rendus du recrutement. Il s’agit donc de présenter les difficultés rencontrées aux différentes échelles de la production : les instructions ministérielles, le rôle des acteurs de l’identification, les comportements des individus et la traduction d’une information en une donnée statistique.

This article examines the cases of 15 Jewish policemen who worked in ghettos in Lithuania during WW2 and who were put on trial in Soviet Lithuania between 1944 and 1952. The aim is contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of whether or not Soviet police and court officials considered the specific nature of Jewish and ghetto life during the war. What factors were important in coming to a guilty verdict? Alternatively, what did the investigators consider to be mitigating circumstances or even evidence for a verdict of not guilty? As the investigation progressed and, particularly, during the trial and sentencing, were there any changes in the questioning which reflected an understanding of what these people had gone through? In this paper, we analyse how the actions of Jewish policemen were perceived in the immediate aftermath of the war, when the discovery of the extermination may have influenced those perceptions; and how these actions were subsequently viewed in the late 1940s and early 1950s, when the Soviet anti-cosmopolitan campaign led to the arrest of many Jews (mainly for Zionism), thus forcing investigators, judges, the accused and witnesses to confront their wartime experiences together. Looking at the arguments of the prosecution and the attempts to justify the actions of the police provides us with an insight into the real tensions pervading life in the ghetto. We also note that the links that existed between certain policemen and the ghetto’s underground were progressively taken into account as an element of the discharge.

Au sortir de la seconde guerre mondiale, la disqualification du racialisme scientifique s'est traduite par un abandon du concept de race dans de nombreux pays. Son usage dans les sciences sociales suscite de nombeux débats, notamment depuis le développement des recherches sur le racisme et les progrès en génétique humaine. À cette littérature revisitée le dossier apporte sa contribution en posant une question inédite : comment les organisations internationales, prises dans des injonctions contradictoires et des pratiques nationales contrastées, gèrent-elles la question raciale ? Les auteur·es retracent les « petits arrangements » de ces organisations dans la prise en compte de la race, de l’après-guerre à nos jours. Chaque moment historique se prête à des bricolages. Les logiques institutionnelles, de coopération ou de rivalité, pèsent également. L’attention portée aux archives ainsi qu’aux acteurs et actrices permet de mettre en lumière les impensés, les figures imposées, les tractations et les accords de circonstances.
